documents the monster larry singleton
Very few murderers have the horrendous history of Larry Singleton. Kent Allard spells out the legal prostitution of the state of California who released Singleton after he mutilated and raped beautiful 15-year-old Mary Vincent in 1978. When Singleton was paroled after serving only 8 years in prison, Californians were outraged. A small army of law enforcement officers wasted tax payer money to guard him as though he was a famous star. Eventually he moved to Florida where he knifed to death a mother during a sex act. Allard's accurate account records the horrible deeds of a monster. By memorializing Singleton's pitiful life Allard forces his readers to take a cold, hard look at our justice system. Recently victim Mary Vincent whose arms were chopped off by Singleton appeared before California Governor Grey Davis. She is a beautiful young woman who has incredible talent as an artist. She has recently married and feels optimistic about her future now that Singleton is on Florida's death row.

A Must For True Crime Buffs
I didn't expect much when I picked up this book- I got a whole lot more than I bargained for.

Larry Singleton is a strange fellow. I really liked how the book contained chapter after chapter of direct quotes taken from police interviews. The subject is grisly, but the cat and mouse game is hilarious. Larry trips himself up with lie after lie, time after time.

You almost feel sorry for him.

The book maintains a healthy balance, however, as we feel the pain and gain a lot of empathy, and sympathy, for his victims- especially his first.

This was a fast read. I couldn't put it down.

I was afraid, at first, the book might be too graphic- and too morbid- but it wasn't. It was well written and a real page turner.

searching for more info on Mary Vincent
Can anyone tell me if there is additional info available on Mary Vincent, the teenaged victim of Larry Stapleton in 1978? Was there ever a book written on her attack, in addition to the mention of her ordeal in the mad chopper? I have read the Mad Chopper. Excellant writer. Straight to the point. Extremely informative. I will watch for other books by the same.

Completely inappropriate!
Since I cannot give this series a 0 rating, a one will have to suffice.
In this day and age we try to teach our children not to call others stupid, they are reprimanded at home and in school for such things, yet these books are given to our children? We were disgusted when our daughter received one of the Stupids books at school from a teacher.
These charecters call each other stupid throughout the books, disgusting! Exactly the opposite of what parents are trying to teach their children.

Don't waste your money on this ...

The Stupids Die
I am a student of West Virginia State College, currently taking a class on Children's Literature. Mr. Samples (A Wonderful Teacher) has instructed us to review a Challenged/Censored book and write our thoughts on it. I read this book as a child and wanted to read it again to see what the fuss was about and why it would be censored. As a child, I read these books because they were ridiculous, therefore funny! As an adult, I can see that some might object to the use of the word "Stupid" and the use of confusing illustrations. Some of the illustrations may be a picture of a dog with the label "fish" on it. This would obviously confuse a younger child, but I remember finding that hilarious! As I said, I can see why some would find the use of the word "Stupid" objectionable, but I sure wasn't ruined by it.

Innocent, laugh-out-loud favourite...
We recently discovered this book and, given the word "die" in the title, I wasn't so sure it would be appropriate. I was quickly reassured by the good-natured tone of Allard's prose, and the kids (5 and 7, both reading) had a great time hunting for quirky "in-jokes" in the background on each page (like a picture, hanging in the Stupids' home, of three beach balls with the caption "The Pyramids").

This book was originally published in the 1977, and it's amazing to see how innocent its prose is in contrast to kids' books today. But this book is never dull or didactic, and it will delight the entire family over and over, while its simple dialogue will thrill early readers (when the lights go out, the Stupids simply declare, "We must be dead."!!!). I'm thrilled this book has been reprinted; we will definitely be hunting down other "Stupids" books in future.

Don't see a problem...
I have found that The Stupids isn't necessarily a BAD book. It really points out to children the things that shouldn't be done, and any sensible person will know to tell their children not to go around calling people names just because of the book. I would also say that this book should be read for age groups of no younger than 2nd grade...so that they can understand the nature of the story and the context in which to take The Stupids. I hope this helps people. :)

The stupids step out

The stupid step, out Written by Harry Allad, was the funniest book I have ever read. Stanley Q Stupid had an idea. He called all stupid and said 'we are stepping out's they took a bath. Petunia asked way there wasn't water. The reason was that with water they would get their clothes wet. They got in the car and went to their grandparents house. The grandpa didn't know who they were. 'Where is grandma? Asked buster. In the closet, said grandpa. Then they left. They saw themselves in the mirror. 'Don't stare at those people, kids " they said. Then they went to eat and then they went home. They got ready for bed and thanked god for a nice day liked it because it was funny and it had a kid's sense of humor like when the dog drove the car. I recommend this book to people who like to laugh and be silly. You should read this book it is great!

The Stupids are great!
I'm a teenager,(18) and my Mom read all the Stupids books to me when I was little. I loved them then, and I still do now. Mom thought they were as funny as I did! Now when I babysit I read them to the kids, who love them also! I think reading is very important to kids, and the Stupids can get them interested. Some people(adults) have a problem with the family being named the Stupids. I think it is a unjustified concern. Now a days there are many more insults kids could use that are a lot worse than just "Stupid". I explain to the kids I babysit that the books are just for fun, and it is'nt nice to go around calling people stupid, and they understand. Just in case, I also check with their parents before I read them to the kids, and have had no objections. The Stupids will always be my favorite children's books, and I can't wait to read them to my own children.

Never Stop Running: Allard Lowenstein and the Struggle to Save American Liberalism

Lowenstein is absent from this biography.
Chafe is to be commended for succinctness in his presentation of the facts which he sets forth. But the heart of Allard Lowenstein's story is the power of his personality. At no point does Chafe give the reader a sense of this personality.

Frequent references to Allard Lowenstein's "biting but brilliant wit," his "superb" writing, and his eloquent speeches lead to exactly one extended quote from him- and that not until the next to last page of the epilogue. Chafe provides ample quotes from friends, relatives, aides, follwers, colleagues, casual acquaintances of Lowenstein, and we learn how all of them felt about Lowenstein's habitually untucked shirt-tail, his chronic lateness, his perpetual attempts to get young men to share a bed with him, and so on. Fine. But the man himself never appears.

Moreover, the book bears many signs of hasty preparation. While I was irritated to find that a woman named Jessie Helms had become prominent in North Carolina politics, I think I should at least mention Chafe's free and often puzzling use of square brackets in quotations.

terrific writing, captures America in the 1950s and 1960s
This is a sensitive, beautifully-written biography of a man whose life both shaped the United States in the 1960s and and reflects the promises and contradictions of the country in that tumultuous era. What Chafe does best is to place Lowenstein's complex and hurly-burly personal life amid the confusion and aspiration that marked the period. Never Stop Running is a truly great biogrpahy--a stunning combination of character and context.

Good Book for Kids
I bought this book for my eight year old brother. I will be leaving for India soon and I feel it will help him comprhend where I am and what it means to be in India. The reading was mostly easy for him and the pictures provided him with a good understanding of what it would be like. I do beleive the reading was a little too easy.

I just want to purchase this book. I came across a copy
I just came across a copy from the interlibrary loan, and I decided to purchase this book. I very much would like to order a copy to use in a course I teach at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I can not find a phone number to ask for help to order it; therefore, I decided to send this message, which if some one reads it may give me a hand. My phone number is 217-333-1228, and my e-mail is h-reis@uiuc.edu. I clearly could review this book; It is in my area of teching and research.

Great book on summer vacations at the lake.
This book is for those of us that spent our summers at the lake cabin or resort. It brings back memories of my summers as a kid and thing that we did. Its also for adults that have spent time there. When I think of the lake I think of this book. It has become part of our cabin reading.

Waste of time
Small-time drugs, stupid trailer trash. The only redeeming thing about this book is that the cops got their guy. There's no questio that he'd be killing today.

This is not a book about cross stitching
There were some darkly crafty goings-on in the house in West Bloomfield Township, MI, just blocks from the Police Department. This is one of the most unsettling true-crime books I have read, expanding the horrific answer to the Shadow's question: "Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men (and women?)" This sadistic duo is right down there with Homolka/Bernardo. Carol mixes the unthinkable - sadistically torturing and murdering her best friend in the basement, with the mundane - going upstairs to wake up her young children and get them ready for the schoolbus.

Author Fred Rozen unfortunately imitates Ann Rule: He keeps telling the reader how "beautiful" and "handsome" the perpetrators are. Read of their deeds, look at their pictures, and judge for yourself.

GREAT TRUE CRIME BOOK!
I read true crime all the time and I really liked this one. I have read some of the author's other true crime books, including Deacon of Death and Lobster Boy. This one is just as good and in some ways, better.

The story is as old as time itself: a romantic triangle that turns foul. The twist, though, is these aren't good guys. These are clever drug dealers and murderers who are brought to ground by two dedicated and intelligent cops.

The courtroom scenes at the end where Carol testifies had me on the edge of my seat. A great read! I recommend this book highly.

The Not So Perfect Balance
I found most of these meals to be 3 blocks. The point of this book was to be able to create quick and easy family meals. Although it probably would take little effort to add blocks to these recipes I did not want to mess with it. I just wanted to open the book and prepare away. In a family of 4 with a man as one of those members these recipes do not make enough. For a 3 member family, this book would probably be great.
