Dawson Makes You Get Off Your Duff...
... and get out to the mountains he loves.

He was the first person in history to ski down all of Colorado's fourteeners. He's climbed all at least once and many several times. Among his accomplishments are four ascents up the Diamond face of Longs Peak, so it is no surprise that Longs Peak figures prominently in this text. Dawson began climbing at an early age, and has written several other guide books for hikers in Colorado. His illustrations are excellent, and his narratives are brief enough to keep your interest and meaty enough to provide the information most are looking for.

The peakbagger's best friend
Having climbed Colorado 14ers for more than 30 years, I've used all available guidebooks. First rule, remember that the info in the book is often wrong -- unless you're willing to think for yourself, avoiding mountains is the best bet. After that, to me Dawson is the best guidebook ever. Roach is good too -- it's good to have both. But in spite of the price difference, Dawson's 2 volumes are well worth it. And please, tread lightly!

Year Round Guide is Tops
I've read seemingly every 14er guide available. Much of the information overlaps as one can imagine. However, what really sets this (and the companion volume as well) one apart is the truly four season information that it provides. Louis gives you ratings for summer and snow climbs as well as ski descents. None of the other 14er guides I've read give you that. These volumes are often compared to Gerry Roach's books which are excellent in their own right. However, in my mind the information in Louis Dawson's guides is better as many of us climb in seasons other than summer!

Immense Information Concisely Presented
This is the best book on elite skiing technique out there. (And I have them all. It's even better than Ski Faster by Lisa Feinberg Densmore, which is excellent.) The sequential photographs alone are worth the cover price. The book covers the physics of modern skiing and modern equipment, and demonstrates different key skills (angulation, inclination, rotation, pole plants, cross under, cross over, the virtual bump, forward pressure early in turns with foot thrusts in the transition) with extraordinary side by side and sequential photographs of the best World Cup athletes in competition. Just a few of the things I learned, just from the photographs: (1) amazingly large initial steering angles (pivoting ski before the turn) used by World Cup racers, who can still carve cleanly, (2) World Cup racers consistently catch air over the virtual bump between turns, giving the lie to the advice given junior racers everywhere to always keep their skis on the snow.

Instead of general advice and platitudes, the book is full of specifics, with clear illustrations drawn from action photos of some of the world's best skiers (Hermann Maier, Kjetil Andre Aamodt, Katja Seizinger, Alberto Thomba--the book was put together a year before Bode Miller took the World Cup by storm and radical inclination.)

It's an essential book for recreational ski racers, and a good book for anyone who aspires to ski with excellence (or who just wants to know how those top racers ski so incredibly well).

Now (sigh) I just have to wait some months for the white flakes so I can practice more of the book learning in the gates.

Book that tells you how mass dynamics of skiing works.
This book tells you what comes natural and why it does. It is all the way mass movements and dynamics of skiing. Advanced or real expert can like way it looks skiing.

Nice book for skiers who likes to know their skiing DYNAMICS
This book goes to the basics of the skiing. It helps you understand what comes natural in skiing and why. Not for the beginners thow.

Cascade Alpine Guide 1: Columbia River to Stevens Pass

The "Bible" of the Washington Cascades
Whether you are a climber, a hiker, a car traveler, or just an armchair explorer, the Beckey guides are the indispensible resources for your mountain experience. The three volumes are filled with information about the natural and human history of the Washington Cascades, as well as complete route and access data for every significant summit. The photos alone are reason enough to own these books. If you are interested in really "knowing" the Washington Cascades, you MUST have them in your library. Highest possible recommendation.

A Bible for traveling in the Alpine regions of the Cascades
The series of books by Beckey on climbing and high routes in the cascades gives the most comprehensive and complete presentation of cascades. Each peak is described with great detail and the photos and pictures are great. This is truly a great guide!

An indispensabe reference book for Northwest Climbers.
I have used this Guidebook so many times in the past 12 years that I've had to purchase it three times. The definitive section on the Picket Range alone is worth the price of the book.

For those who want to experience the North Cascades as they were in the 30's and 40's, reading the "Trails and Alpine Hiking Approaches" section will steer you in the right direction. This book is rife with golden kernels of information found nowhere else. Any serious climber should have all three of the Cascade Alpine Guide books.

Good book, bad binding
This book is fantastic. If you like bouldering and John Sherman's humorous tales you will enjoy this book.

The SOFT COVER BINDING FALLS APART after one or two openings. Of three people I know with the soft cover, all three have fallen apart. BUY THE HARD COVER VERSION!

Excellent.
It reads as a guidebook, a history, and as literature. Sherman writes with surprising grace and introspection about the sport. Nice profiles of the locals at different areas, too. And I was relieved to see no reference to the finest, and apparently still secret, problem at Carderock, MD.

This book is a must have classic for any climber.
Stone Crusade is THE book of bouldering and the history of the sport in the USA. John Sherman's witty and irreverent writing style and his artistic photographic skill capture the true feeling of the sport across the entire country. A guide book, history lesson, and entertainment all rolled into one. You will want to hit the road on your own Stone Crusade.

The Alpine path : the story of my career
Published in Unknown Binding by Fitzhenry & Whiteside ()
Author: L. M. Montgomery
Amazon base price: $
Used price: $4.74

Essential for researchers or fans of L. M. Montgomery
Maud, as Montgomery liked to be called, wrote this book on the request for a serial story appearing in a Canadian woman's magazine. At first Montgomery had doubts that her "long, upward struggle" could actually be called a career, but she worked on the story anyways and the result is a humurous, enjoyable, and information-packed book about the work and perseverance by one of the world's favorite children's author. As a professional writer, I have written articles upon Montgomery and still consider this book the best source for reliable information as well as beng enjoyable to read, which is a rare and refreshing break from most biographies. I highly recommend this book, along with her journals, as a worthwhile addition to any Montgomery fan, researcher, or fan of biographies'library.

I would have called it Damourium. I mean....read this! :)
One would think, when picking up an autobiography, that it's time to get out the caffeine, or at least a comfortable chair. But Maud's is different - mostly because she makes her life into a story - a story as interesting and as fun as her beloved Anne of Green Gables or Emily of New Moon. The words and stories of her life make the book one that is impossible to put down...who knows what might happen to Maud on the next page. Also, because she wrote it, the reader know what she is thinking, what she was like as a child because there is no one retelling it but herself.

one of the must-reads for any LMM fans!
I have read quite a number of versions of LMM's biographies, and I think this one is one of the best. Although this isn't as rich in content as the LMM Album or the four volumes of LMM's own journals, this book is already able to give the readers the enough information that a LMM fan will want to know about this wonderful story-teller. Besides, I think this book is very suitable for teenagers to read, very suitable for beginners of LMM fans who want to know more about this author of the famous Anne books. A very enjoyable and quick read, but at the same time, very informative.

Hilarious!
This book is a riot. It's especially funny to see Bill Gates in his underwear!

great inside humor on Gates and Microsoft
GATES '99 is good fun. The author really captures a lot of the inside quirks of Microsoft. Plus, Bill looks great in the outfits!

Really funny!!!!!
Hilarious! You'll see Bill in a whole new light after being able to dress him as Janet Reno. This would fit perfectly in the holiday stocking of your favorite Microsoft drone.

Very comprehensive and easy to navigate...
I own many trail guide books and this one is far and above all of them. The book is logically structured, maps and photos are very helpful and directions are clear. Dawson has obvioulsy dedicated a great part of his life hiking Colorado and has documented his travels well in this book. All routes are rated and shown in pictures of the mountain. If you buy one Colorado 14er guide book, buy this one.

I'd Be Lost Without It
Finally, a book that is worth its weight in your backpack. Lou Dawson has done it right. Great photos, incredible maps and route descriptions that make sense and are easy to follow. All you have to do is compare Lou's book to any other title to the shelf to see that his book is the one to have.

THE....... Hole
Dynamic pictures.... factual historic information...bought 3 for Christmas gifts.

more than just a coffee table book!
I originally bought this book as a gift, but ended up keeping it for myself! I have never seen a "coffee table book" that is so well written. The photography is what initially grabs your attention, but the stories and historical information are what keep you coming back for more. I would recommend this book to anyone, whether they have an interest in Jackson Hole's past and present, or they just like looking at amazing photographs.

if you love to ski/ snowboard Jackson Hole...
... this is your book. The history of the area is fascinating, but the interviews with the locals really bring this book to life. David Gonzales has collected a plethora of amazing pictures from the area's best photographers, too. Whether you've just visited Jackson Hole or have lived in the area, 'Jackson Hole: On a Grand Scale' brings back great memories of skiing and snowboarding a place that's like no other!

Alpine Achievement: A Chronicle of the United States Disabled Ski Team

a book about heroes
First time author Lori J. Batcheller has worked up an eminently readable history book & catalogue of the who, why, what, when & how of Disabled Skiing.

From how Disabled Skiing got it start after WWII to the legends in the sport, athletes, coaches, sponsors & supporting staff, to classifications & training schedules, this book covers it all.

ALPINE ACHIEVEMENT is an exciting, exhilarating, informative edition to your sports library.

A Can Do book........ Yes!!!! 10 stars
Hope people don't assume this is a book ONLY for those who are disabled, because it isn't. And shy 200 pages it packs a lot of information into the pages. Everything from the history of disabled skiing, to the evolution of equipment that the skier uses.

Then there is the sections on skiing blind, above the knee amputees, arm amputees, those who ski mono and those who want to do so for pleasure as well as competition. It also talks about NASTAR , which is the acronym for the National Standard Race and is the largest public recreational grassroots ski race program in the world, developed in 1968.

This year over 100 ski area courses are scheduled to have meets.

On page 105 the author notes (and I agree) "Anyone who enjoys skiing knows the pleasure that comes from being out in fresh mountain air, viewing the surrounding landscape from ski lifts and mountaintops, and the feeling of wind brushing across your face as you glide across the snow covered hillside. Skiing also improves strength, endurance and balance, which is especially beneficial for people with disabilities."

There is a healthy size glossary of terms at the back of the book along with pages 141-178 dedicated to names, addresses and other contacts for ski areas in all ski states. As well as information on how to get involved.

This is a book I am getting my library since I want more people from my community to know that just because they or a family member or friend is in a wheel chair or otherwise disabled doesn't mean they cant take part in winter sports!

The story of the courage and spirit of the Disabled Ski Team

This is the story of the often unbelievable feats, courage and spirit of the United States Disabled Olympic Ski Team. It is a comprehensive history of those diasabled persons who have overcome and adjusted to obstacles of great magnitude, and become first rate athletes. An enjoyable read and a resource for anyone who is interested in, or wants to know more about, the necessary adjustments required of a blind skiier, for example, or a one-legged person--as well as the history of disabled skiing; chronicling its beginnings from shortly after WWII to the present.

Read about the prosthetic and adaptive equipment made available by various equipment manufacturers, as well as the efforts of rehabilitation professionals and volunteers.

This is a well-written account, easily worth five stars.

The most informative Book on Skiing
I personally found this book easy to understand, the authors made sure that they gave only the information that you needed, when you needed it,And all the information was explained in detail. With the companion video it just gets better. To put it simple, this book explains it all from A to Ski!

Inspirational. The only ski training book you need.
This is the most up-to-date and complete guide I have run across. Its coverage is encyclopedic, yet remarkably succinct, covering every issue from equipment to skills, drills, and mental approaches. It should be useful to avid skiers and instructors at any level, supplanting volumes of manuals normally available only to professional instructors, yet the exercises detail a path that even novices can effectively pursue to develop the most refined technique. The book is perfectly complemented by the companion video which gives clear evidence that the book's progression of exercises can cluminate in the gorgeous turns the Ms. Post Foster, her coauthors, and demo team do so effortlessly. The combined effect is truly inspirational.

This book is the only ready material you should take on your next ski trip. If you read it before then (and you should), you will quickly develop a powerful longing for the slopes.

A must read for all skiers who want to perfect carving
This is a fantastic book for all level of skiers. It will take you through the steps to using your shaped skies as they were meant to be used. By the way: There is a video that accompanies this book - it is also excellent. And should be watched the first several times with the sound - and then mute the sound and just watch the skiing. Maybe Amazon.com could supply it?
