decent intro to the extentions
The Spatial Analyst Portion was very useful. I don't use network analyst. Could be a little more indepth with the 3D Analyst portion. All in all, a very useful book.

Dr.FAD
The authors are professionals both in GIS and teaching. I enjoyed the text so much. The examples are very well designed. The problem is the extensions that did not work on my PC-may be due to windows XP, so I used my original extensions.
One good thing in this book is the explanation of the other extensions-in brief ,of course.

Very useful introduction to ArcView extensions
I agree that this book is best purchased as a tutorial, not a manual. It is an excellent tutorial - easy to understand, with very useful and realistic examples. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about these extensions. Unlike a previous reviewer, I had no problems with the 120 day trial versions of the extensions software. I have ArcView 3.2 and operate on Windows 98. I don't believe they are compatible with Windows 2000 or XP, as I tried to install network analyst first on an XP machine and got an error message that the network analyst (at least this particular trial version) was not compatible with Windows 2000, and I didn't try the others after that.

Shakespeare's Understanding of Honor: Understanding of Honor (Studies in Statesmanship)

Shakespeare's Understanding of Honor
John Alvis' book, Shakespeare's Understanding of Honor, is not simply an in-depth study of Shakespeare's plays, it is also a comprehensive survey of the perennial issues facing political societies which claim to be committed to both justice and equality. Alvis notes that, "We seem to have good cause to distrust honor as a principle of moral and political life, yet our depreciation of the motive entails costs. The ideal of equality is our best guide to justice but perhaps not by itself sufficient to nourish other strengths of mind and heart." What does it mean, for instance, that the signatories to the Declaration of Independence pledged their "sacred honor" when founding a nation which now associates the word honor with, as Alvis suggests, designs against our liberty? This is not an antiquarian study, but instead one which is highly relevant to today's political discourse, and it is refreshing because it invites us to read Shakespeare as a guide through the complexities of politics.

Above all, however, Alvis' work is an intelligent and close examination of some of Shakespeare's principal works, including the Rape of Lucrece, the English History plays, the Roman plays, Hamlet, and the Tempest. Alvis believes that Shakespeare's dramas compel readers to test moral principles by tracing through the consequences of acting on those principles. He increases one's appreciation for the depth of Shakespeare's engagement with the major themes of western philosophic thought at the same time that he enlarges our own understanding of these topics.

His book has the added benefit of teaching us how to read Shakespeare, that is, with the greatest care and attention to detail and nuance. Reading Shakespeare as Alvis does is like sleuthing a great mystery where every utterance of the characters must be compared against the background and action of the play in order to adduce their motives and intentions, their successes and failures.

Alvis' work testifies to the worth of such study. He gives the reader a glimpse of the precious coin such care in reading repays. Readers of this book will come away with a refined education in politics and a deep understanding of Shakespeare's works.

The Best!
Dr.Alvis' study is truly remarkable. Honor is the theme of politics - there are few motives that drive man to serve the common-weal. This said, Alvis is not satisfied to sift through the verities of political life, he is also interested in the life that is beyond the political stage. The true merit of this book lies in Alvis' ability to see the noble within an emaciated Denmark or a womanized England.

For those interested in the true greatness of Shakespeare, this is your only stop. What kind of knowledge do the great ones have? What is the motivation for the philosopher to engage in public life. No one understands the theoretical life, as presented by Shakespeare, as well as Alvis.

A great help
Gordon McComb gives a fantastic explanation on the workings of speakers that will make one feel like a pro once finished reading the book. Great for people wanting to make thier own speakers or just wanting to become more knowledgable. The terms used are not too technical but in depth enough to give a 'sound' understanding (excuse the pun). Well done Gordon.

More books like this are needed.
More books like this are needed to gently convey a love for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms among the reading public. Without Arms is a relatively subtle story about the consequences of civilian disarmnament. Of course, there have been other far more lurid stories, but I think that this approach has its place. We all know about how much gun control benefitted the Jews in Nazi Germany and the kulaks in Soviet Russia, just to mention a few instances. Also, the quality of production of the book is excellent. It was sufficiently entertaining that I wish the book were longer, or there will be a sequel, or even a TV show about it.

Guns are outlawed; Outlaws rule
I received this book as a gift, and although not the typical type of book that I would read I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is the story of life in smalltown USA, after a national gun ban has been passed. The local farmers have trouble with wild animals and the town has lots of trouble with wild animals, in the form of a gang of outlaws, also. This story tells how the local law enforcement officers deal with these problems. We also get a look into the personal lives of the people of the town, including insights into the human nature that pulls people together in times of trouble. This is the first book by this author and I for one hope that it is not her last.

THE INFORMAL SECTOR IN URBAN ECONOMY : Low Income Housing in Lahore
Published in Unknown Binding by Oxford Univ Pr (01 May, 1997)
Author: Imtiaz Alvi
Amazon base price: $39.95
Average review score:

Housing problems pose a major problem
The book under discussion is a very laudable effort on a critical topic especially considering the fact that Pakistan is a developing economy subject to such problems. Th author takes into consideration the various models used by various organizations in order to highlight the major hindrances to development in developing countries. The author studies the "Development Models," keeping in view the Pakistani economy as well as with special emphasis on Lahore.

The author has supported his arguments and point of views with the avid use of mathematical data in the form statistical figures depicting the various populations and housing trends in Lahore.

The informal sector in Urban Economy is a critical in depth and revealing study of the
development models applied in the developing countries since the 2nd world war in order to combat underdevelopment, poverty and homelessness.
The recent formal-informal sector approach to development is the main focus of this analytical work. The book attempts to demystify the role and vitality of this development approach by investigating the urban land market, construction materials market, and construction labor market in the urban economy.
It examines the politics of development and shelter policies and the role of the various interest groups in Pakistan since its foundation in 1947. The effects of these policies and the real beneficiaries, in the face of the growing poverty and homelessness in general and in Lahore in particular, are discussed.
The book clarifies the philosophical and practical limitations of the popular development model and cautions against romanticizing it as the prescription for all the developing countries.

The book starts with a general discussion on the authors approach to the topic, and highlights the major theoretical issues involved in the study of low income housing in the developing world.

Furthermore it goes on to describe the historical and geographical background of the case study. ...The evolution in the city over the last 2000 years has also been described. The effects of the political and economics changes on the economic, social and physical fabric of the city have also been described. It is revealed that these structural factors affect the role and the function of the poor in the city.

The author has developed the role and the function of the poor in the city further
By looking in more detail at the issue of squatter areas in the city and the low income housing policies adopted by the state are analyzed in a broader social, political and economic context....

...Despite the dubious status of land in the squatter settlements, both houses and land are sold on the market. The functioning of this market is compared with the conventional housing market in Lahore.

Lastly he investigates the use of building materials in which are used for house building materials in the squatter settlements of Lahore. The study shows that many of the assumptions held by academics and popular conceptions about the use of construction materials by the poor are unfounded in the case of Lahore.

Though the author supports his assertions with an avid in rational use of statistical data yet occasionally we find that he finds it hard to keep the interest of the user intact. Too much use of statistical inferences as well as facts and figures makes the material very unappealing to the reader at times. Besides this the author has used some of those tried and tested models that have resulted in little success earlier. ...The fervor and avidity created by the author at the start of the book somehow looses its stature somewhere midway and especially at the end of the book where the author ends in a very cautious note. However Mr.Alvi has taken a very bold stance in evaluating the modern urban problems and their solutions. Overall a good book for students, avid readers, intellects and teachers

A Bowl of Warm Air (Oxford Poets)
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (July, 1996)
Author: Moniza Alvi
Amazon base price: $11.95
Used price: $6.00
Average review score:

why this Anthology didn't work
Moniza Alvi, as we know from Pakistan but brouhgt up in England in A Bowl of Warm Air has focused only upon herself and her struggle to find her true identity in each and every one of these poems. They are written in very confusing verses and do not let the reader come up with any conclusuins. When used in school contexts it is very hard to connotate. On the whole this anthology is "not" one of the best

A Bowl of Warm Air
As always, Moniza alvi is very keen in expressing her sense of otherness and unbelonging in most of her poems. The poems are nice and can easily be understood but when they are too many of them 'talking' about the same issue, you'll get tired of them.
