5 minutes of wisdom spread over a 2 hour tape
I too have read "Working on Yourself Doesn't Work," and found the book to be insightful and enjoyable. As a result was interested in the authors' audio tape seminar on Relationships, as that seems to be my life-long struggle. Unfortunately the format of this tape - a rambling discussion with an audience with no apparent planned outline - left me a bit frustrated. MY questions aren't answered, and frankly, I found most of the audience questions to be rather dull and plodding. They start out saying they will talk about Relationships - how to get 'em, how to have 'em, how to keep 'em. They really don't cover that. The ONLY advice about how to "get" a relationship is just "go out there and have fun because people like to be around people who are having fun." Good advice. But - that's it!? The main theme of the tape is that you need to relax and stop "working on yourself," stop going to workshops, retreats and seminars because "you are perfect exactly as you are" - but then someone in the audience asks a question, saying what they think, and Shya Kane tells him, "here's what's wrong with your question." So, I'm confused. Are we perfect as we are, or are we thinking wrong, asking the wrong questions? My recommendation would be to take the authors' advice - stop working on yourself - and start stopping now, by not investing in this tape. It's only about 5 minutes worth of insight, already covered in their book, for an extra ($) and 2 hours of your time. Not worth it.

A treasure chest of truth.
One of the reviews of "Working on Yourself Doesn't Work" by Ariel and Shya Kane pointed me to an audio tape by the Kanes called "Magical Relationships." What a treat! After meeting the authors through their book, I got to actually hear them talking with people in a seminar. They are brilliant with people, really listening to each question and comment that arises from the audience and giving everything they've got with their responses. Listening to the tape was like spending time with two compassionate friends (and their guests!) who have discovered magic in their lives. I felt very close to one of the participants who talked about how embarrassing it can be to feel her partner's love for her. It's a great section, but I won't give any more away. You don't have to dream about having an awesome life. Get the book, get the tape, and celebrate - the Kanes are a gift!

Listen, learn, love.
The tape "Magical Relationships" was inadvertently found on my bookcase. My wife had purchased it when we were not seeing eye to eye on a few issues. Listening to the tape became one of those issues. A few weeks ago, while fumbling around the living room, I found the tape. I played it thinking I would hear all the old relationship clichés newly packaged. Much to my delight, what I heard was an extraordinary dialogue between people. The Kane's were leading the discussion, providing the audience with new perspectives on all relationships- with yourself, your family, your lover and your life. The audience was providing personal insights and experiences which helped illustrate these new perspectives adding to the Kane's clarity on the topic. I recommend buying and listening to "Magical Relationships", it will change the way you look at your life and relationship.

How to Read Donald Duck: Imperialist Ideology in the Disney Comic
Published in Paperback by Intl General (December, 1984)
Authors: Ariel Dorfman, Armand Mattelart, and David Kunzle
Amazon base price: $13.95
Used price: $63.20
Average review score:

A necessary starting-stone.
Of course, in a vastly changed historical context, bourgeois ideology cannot produce anything approaching the seemingly reactionary facility of the Disney comic (just compare Disney with Buffy, Xena, or other postmodern heroes!). However, anyone trying to understand changes in the ideological outlook of Mass Culture must, of necessity, regard this book as one's unavoidablke starting-stone. That's that.

I Like This For The "Wrong" Reason!
I believe the case made by the authors, that comics were/are among the propaganda mechanisms of the US Gov't. and business interests. Particularly in Central and South America comics were used to communicate an anti-Communist message. However I feel that this is a GOOD thing, while the authors feel otherwise. I hope "our side" in the current War on Terror is even more imaginative and resourceful than the Cold Warrior Comix crew.

Down with Disney!
It just goes to show that even with the economy on a downturn the CEO of Disney walks away with 75 million dollars and gives the employees the dregs of the disney economy. This book is worth buying for it details the enormity of Diney's propaganda campaign to portray the third world as a place to be exploited. I've never saw such outright villainy as is portrayed in this classic by Dorfman. Disney portrays revolutionaries (in their comic strips) as essentially traitors and the reactionaries, and oligarchs as heroes with Donald Duck, Scrooge McDuck and company as aiding their crimes.

Taciturn study of an interesting subject
Well researched but not engaging. The author never immersed my interest or compassion with the "Jewish mestizos" living in one of the most remote cities in South America. Ariel Segal made me feel detached and unemotional about a subject that one could feel compassion. That of Jewish men, woman and children living in isolation from their culture and history. Perhaps, this subject could be reworked as a novel. The story of a white family in the Belgian Congo was addressed rather grippingly in The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver.

soooo interesting
Ariel Segal did an amazing job writing this book. It is so interesting and incrediable. I couldn't put this book down, i just loved it. Ariel, congratulations on writing an amazing ethnography...

Jews scattered to the 4 corners of the earth
Ever since the Jews were originally exiled from the land of Israel they can be found in many far-flung corners of the world. But who would have thought that in the middle of the Amazon jungle Jews could be found? Ariel Segal does an amazing job of both presenting how Jews got to the Amazon and how they are currently expressing their religion and culture. It is a wonderful tale of the blending of cultures and the desire for religious and cultural continuity.

Tiny book, small content
Be well aware that this is a "Tiny Tome" (I was glad I'd gotten my new bifocals). Content is about the length of a serious magazine article. It is, however, charmingly presented and an amusing fifteen-minute read. (The only thing Mr. Lipari is mistaken about is naming Basil Rathbone the ultimate screen Sherlock, when it's clearly Jeremy Brett. But, de gustibus ...)

A great, but small book!
I bought this book for my sister, who loves mysteries. It is great because you can take it anywhere with you and you'll read it over and over again.

A good sobby romance
A good story of four people who care about each other and are faced with a horrific life threatening plague. I found myself crying in several places. Beautifully written.

Read this book during allergy season
Read this book during allergy season- no it's nothing to sneeze at and no one will know you are crying because of the read. They will chalk it up to the allergies.

The book centers on the lives of 4 people that care deeply about one another. Set in the not to distant future where an outbreak of Disease plays havoc with the entire wold. This is a love story but it could also be classified as action-adventure, sci-fi, etc. It is a quick enjoyable read that will Leave you with some questions lingering in your mind as we race toward the new millennium.

A little celebration of the good things...
It is significant to be aware of the subtitle of this little "kid's" book... "A Fable of Faith, Love and Family." And perhaps important to know just a bit about the author, M. Scott Peck... bestselling author of the near-legendary "The Road Less Travelled: A New Psychology of Love, Traditional Values and Spiritual Growth."
This is the only children's book that Mr. Peck has written to date, and after reading it, I hope it will not be his last. It was cute, uplifting, and inspirational. However, these last two adjectives may describe the very kind of thing that parents feel wary about from time to time... "So, what is this guy preaching in here?" they may rightfully ask.
Well, this little book does touch on some rather serious questions.
Things like "What's reincarnation?" and "How do you know that our souls live on after we die?" Both questions are asked by the protagonist, the young girl Jenny.
The first question is answered matter-of-factly, but the second question is answered in the typical respectful and non-sectarian way that Peck approaches spiritual issues in all of his works. Jenny's dad answers her... "That's a very big question. In fact, it's so big I'm not going to answer it. You see, some questions are so big you shouldn't take anyone else's answer for them. It's better if you figure out your own. Often, I think that's why we're put here: to find some solutions for ourselves. I tell you what though, I'd be delighted to listen to any answer you come up with." (with "you" in italics).
In my opinion... this is a good answer to the question. You may have a different opinion on that, and you should let that be your guide as to whether this is the type of book you want to read to your children. (Or not)! Because really, this is the tone of the story, in a nutshell.
It is framed around the event of Jenny having a single snowflake land on her nose and promptly melt. This simple experience causes her to begin wondering about randomness, and consequently, her own special place in the world. She comes to the point of concluding that she is, in fact... special, and unique. As unique as a snowflake, and more specifically her own friendly snowflake, the snowflake that found her nose.
In the Foreword, Peck says "Being who I am, this is naturally a spiritual sort of story. It is meant to be read in such a way by young people with old souls and older people with young souls."
I, being one of these latter type, truly enjoyed it. As soon as I meet one of these former type of person, I am going to give them this book as a gift.

a great little gift for anyone
i gave this book as a christmas gift to many of my friends; they absolutely love this inspirational little story! it's very charming! the story is roughly about reicarnation, and believing that we are all connected in life. i love this little book, and the cover design is excellent. the book cover is a thick parchment paper like material with embossed lettering. this is the type of book you can read to your kids at bedtime, or read in the bathtub by yourself for a quick picker upper!

Not quite good
It tells you how to make the operations, some physiology about skin cancer and a lot of pictures but there is no explanation on pictures that would clarify why exactly that picture classifies as certain type of skin cancer. You have to make your own theory.
I wished author put two comparable pictures together and mahe differential diagnosis side by side.

best skin cancer book available
Outstanding material, concise and to the point, a wealth of knowledge. very helpful for primary care doctors and well as all other specialties in providing a fairly in-depth review of the different types of skin cancer and their management.

Dirty Secrets
This book will tell you all the secret relationships between the US & Argentine governments before the Argentine recovery of the Malvinas (to the British: Falklands) Islands. It tells a story of secret 'favors' being exchanged in Central America between the Reagan Administration and the military dictators of my nation. It comes complete with data showing how the changes in the US budget 'forced' the US government to seek assistance from Argentina. And how the Argentines put their experience, in the repression of dissent within Argentina, to work for their American "masters" objectives. I personally think that the book shows how the unaware American People are capable of sustaining a government that overseas undoes all its' domestic policies and steps on the American ideals of freedom, equality and legality (while implying that that is the only way to support those ideals).
