Very Helpful
This book is a must-have for Audi 100 or 200 owners. If you would like to work on this car yourself, I highly recommend buying this book even before you pop the hood. The exploded views of parts and detailed information provided in this book makes it a godsend to those of us who are brave enough to fix these beasts!

Mechanic or not, a must have
If you own the car, you should own this manual. For those of you who own these cars, and need service, you will be much better prepared for dealing with a mechanic. Fluids specs, full description of features, and service recommendations are included. For those of you who will work on their own car, you will find the "german method" the only method for completing the work. An absolute godsend when installing stereos, etc, as the each of the approximately 2 billion VW/AUDI clip styles are covered (okay, I exaggerated)These manuals are derived from the manuals supplied to the dealers. Worth every cent.

Audi Repair Manual
The Audi 100, 200 Official Factory Repair Manual 1989, 1990, 1991 is the most comprehensive repair manual offered for the Audi. As many Audi owners know, Chilton nor Haynes does not offer a repair manual for the 100 or 200. However, this manual covers every repair and maintanance detail in an easy to read and navigate manual. This IS the manual used by Audi Dealer Service Centers. It is a must-have for owners of the 100 or 200 who prefer to repair thier own automobiles.

An exceptional chronicle for an exceptional car.
The Audi TT story is one of inspiration and fascination. The book gives the reader a look at the creativity and innovation that went in the design and production of the TT.

I particularly enjoyed the wonderful technical detail, which is so eloquently described and an important part in understanding the TT. The TT Book was wonderfully written and adorned with some of the best automotive photography ever published. I give it my highest rating!

Excellent "biography" of an excellent car
It's interesting to see the gestation of any successful design project. How it was made; what inspired it; what didn't make it; who was behind the scenes. "The TT Book" is fantastic look at evolution of a design concept, and concisely tells how a small focused team of designers and technicians can turn a great concept into a great reality.

The best feature of the book by far is the photography. Included are several shots of the early prototypes and the show cars, as well as the final coupe and roadster production models. And the final section of the book is a series of promotional photos taken in Iceland. Putting a striking car like the TT in that otherworldly environment was truly a masterstroke.

On the flipside, the book does bog down somewhat in the technical details. But, as a "biography" of the TT concept, it does make "The TT Book" a truly complete work.

I recommend this book to anyone who loves Audi's as much as I do.

It's About Time!
It was encouraging to find a book dedicated solely to the Audi Quattro in the first place-- but then reading and looking at the photos inside encouraged me to write my brief words of praise here. And just wait until you see some of the older Quattros pictured in this book... The Audi Quattro has finally been given the time in research and documentation that VWs have had for years, and now, hopefully, we will see more interest taken and given within the auto restoration world in these fun-to-drive and collectible cars. Now if Meredith would just turn his talents to the Saab 900...(or has he and I simply don't know!?!)

To be continued
Some 15 years after its publication this title fetches premium secondhand prices, which is just as the same author's Unbeatable BMW achieved.

As for Unbeatable, a new American edition is to become a reality, but that's not scheduled to appear until 2003. So what's so good about the original? And what should be improved?

The plus points of quattro in the Haynes 1984 edition [or the German-only 1985 mild uprate from Mototbuch Verlag] are its immense depth, born of direct factory cooperation and first hand experience. It covers both motorsports [mainly World Championship rallying] and the street development of the unique 4x4 turbo quattro, a coupe that set technical standards for 20 years. It talks directly to the engineers who made it happen, many of whom are retired today.

The snags to the original are poor presentation [the grainiest black and white you'll see outside WW11 battle footage] and an illogical running order, characteristic of this author.

If you need a genuine quattro fix before 2003 hunt one of these collectibles down. If not, the American edition will likely overcome the original minus points. As a bonis it will offer many US motor racing tales [Audi won the 1988 Trans Am title], the story of quattro's 600 bhp Pikes Peak monsters and 15 years of Audi's legendary Vortsprung durch technik [Progress through Technology.

The Best Book I Have Found On This Topic
This book is the best and only book that I have ever read that documents the connection between eastern religions, meditation and the Torah. I am a Rabbi in Santa Monica, California and Yoga and Meditation are very popular with many Jewish people here. I think that if more would read this book, they would be amazed to find that much of these techniques stems from Judaism and Kabalah.

Epistemology: A Contemporary Introduction to the Theory of Knowledge (Routledge Contemporary Introductions to Philosophy)
Published in Hardcover by Routledge (June, 1998)
Author: Robert Audi
Amazon base price: $90.00
Average review score:

Too easy to get lost
I used this book as part of a graduate level epistemology course. The class consensus was that it was too detailed which made it hard to stay focused on the main points of the various arguments. I would not recommend this book, as a whole, to the lay reader, but some chapters are suitble. All in all, it is a good source book for identifying the issues in epistemology.

Great Intro by One of Today's Top Epistemologists
Robert Audi presents a clear and well thought-out introduction to epistemology. Audi begins the epistemological project different than many other epistemologists. He is what is called an epistemological particularist, which is why his book is composed of sections concerning the sources of knowledge first, rather than beginning with either some method (e.g. Hume's empiricism), or a reply to skepticism.

Personally, I hate Audi's writing style; but it is filled with lots of great information and examples that clarify what each of the positions, problems, and answers are. Note that I provide Audi a five-star rating despite my rejection of his style.

There are some things that the reader should be aware of before reading his book. Firstly, Audi's analysis of perception is different from the traditional analysis. There are pros and cons to this. Audi provides three forms of "seeing:" (a) simple seeing, (b) seeing that, and (c) seeing to be. Traditionally, it has been: (a) simple seeing, (b) seeing as, and (c) seeing that. Audi does have a seeing as, but it is not the same as the traditional analysis. Unfortunately, Audi never notes this. Remember, his book is an introduction (even though it has lots of info and is really an intermediate leveled book); it is not something that should cover every single position and view.

Over all, Audi covers the typical debates well. I was pleased to read him on the foundationalism/coherency issue. He also includes interesting chapters on skepticism and moral/scientific/religious knowledge. On a personal note, I disagreed with Audi quite a bit (though I agreed a lot too). But I think Audi has thought through these issues really well and there is much to learn from him regardless of what you already believe, or think you know.

This book can be read by a lay person (starting at around age 17 or 18 unless you are a genius); but it will take some time to read through. It is helpful to read his chapters twice, despite it being a tedious and perhaps scary task. But it would be well worth it. Buy this book.

Difficult but rewarding
Since I am neither philosopher nor student of philosophy, I am not qualified to comment on this book for those perspectives. I am at best an interested and educated layman who read it without benefit of teacher or class, and so I shall address the work from that persective, which may be useful to others similarly situated.

Professor Audi here presents theories of knowledge organized by sources and structure, rather that historically by the philosophers who espoused them. No matter that Hume said this or Descartes that: the focus is on major concepts and ideas. Since my interest was in ideas themselves rather than the history of their development, I found this approach congenial.

Although Professor Audi writes with admirable clarity, I cannot pretend that I understood the work in its entirety, a reflection of my own limitations, surely not his. And yet I think I profited from the struggle. I appreciate now as never before the inextricability of philosophy and human mental and sensory process, the ambiguities of knowing and the relationship between knowing and justified belief, the elusiveness of certainty, the seductiveness of experience, and the complex character of scientific and moral (and religious) beliefs.

Within an academic setting, I suspect this would be an excellent basic text. If, like me, you are not a specialist and are interested in the subject of epistemology outside a formal academic setting, I would recommend this book only if you are tenacious, highly motivated, and willing to read and re-read slowly. It is not for the impatient reader looking for instant enlightenment.

In sum, this is a book whose rewards can be great for the determined reader.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS BOOK!!!
I found it very hard to close this book! I was riveted to Chief Mankiller's every word and finished her book still wanting more. Her knowledge of Cherokee history and legend is vast and taught me many things I never knew. Also, her strength and enduring spirit is inspiring to me as a Cherokee. She succeeded, through her own life story, in instilling a new sense of pride in me that has made me become more involved in keeping native american culture alive and well. After reading her book I truly felt proud to be Cherokee. She should be an inspiration to us all. Highly recommended reading!

Our Uncommon and Common Cherokee History by Mankiller
I spent a whole weekend not just reading but absorbing this work of Wilma Mainkiller. On Sunday I could only describe feeling wonderfully enriched by the experience both personally, as a Euro- and Native American person and also as an American. All of us have been denied major parts of our comon American history with the repression of Native American History. The mid section of the book is purely historical, and so much of it was news to me! (I thought that I knew Native history and yet it would prove that I had alot to learn that weekend.) The interection of Cherokee and African American history is fascinating ! It is a reoccuring theme. What history books cover that? The focus is usually Euro-American to Native American, or Euro-American to African-American. At a personal level the experience was tremendous. Putting personal information together with her history, I learned that I have a matrilineal clan affliation (bird). I feel that as the result of her work I myself ,my family, and descendents have connected with something that would have otherwise been lost. Generations ago, two orphaned Cherokee boys were adopted by a white family in Georgia. One later went "white' the other "red". This is not just my personal background. This is a metaphor for so much of American history. Truely, Cherokee culture is the best kept secret in America today, as the author writes. It is our common cultural heritage, like jazz, like democracy. I relish reading other works by this author ! Doris Hale

Excellent account of the history of the Cherokees
First of all, I would encourage anyone who is interested in the history and culture of the Cherokees to read this book. The average American is taught very little about the native peoples who inhabited this land before the white men took over. The first reviewer, gsibbery from Baton Rouge, LA, shows the mentality of most whites today. The native Americans have been trying to share their views and feelings for years but most people do not care to listen, and in general, do not care about the circumstances these people have had to endure. I commend Mrs. Wilma Mankiller for the effort and time she spent in writing this book and I thoroughly enjoyed it and have shared it with others. I think we all need to try to see things from another's perspective sometimes. It was a great book!!

Good,better,and best, but needs work.
The second edition of THE CAMBRIDGE DICTIONARY OF PHILOSOPHY corrects many of the deficiencies of the first edition, but many remain. Especially troublesome are lapses of historical awareness. For example, the entry ABDUCTION (which is available on this website) does not mention that the term was introduced into philosophy by the noted American logician C.S. Peirce (1839-1914}. Peirce used it in senses related to, but other than, that assigned to it by the entry. Another example occurs at the TYPE-TOKEN entry, which describes another contribution by Peirce. Here, thankfully, Peirce is given credit , but for something that he did not do and in fact for something that was done centuries earlier, perhaps before Socrates, namely distinguishing between a category and one of its members. Another troubling type of deficiency is a surprising lack of comprehensiveness. For example, the entry MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS, after adequately describing this basic field of pure mathematics and mentioning its application to geometry known as "analytic geometry", fails to mention its other main mathematical application, its application to number theory known as "analytic number theory". Perhaps there will be a third edition in which these and other glaring shortcomings can be addressed. It must be said, however, in all fairness, that this is by far the best work of its kind known to this reviewer. It has been criticized for its "dense writing", which is like criticizing a watchdog for its ferocious-sounding bark.

Very satisfying. But sure enough, an hour later...
This fine reference performs its function admirably, cataloguing the most important milestones in the history of philosophy and explaining abstruse ideas in clear language. What it really lacks, though, is some good ethnic jokes.

Excellent reference book.
Not only does this dictionary offer illuminating biographies of some of the more important individuals in the history of philosophy, but it summarizes their thought in a remarkably concise yet lucid manner.

The book is especially useful for scholars of logic, as it formalizes some of the propositions and arguments in the entries related to the sentential calculus and set theory. A comprehensive appendix of the logical notation used throughout the text is also provided.

The editor has admirably included entries summarizing the contributions of Islamic and Jewish philosophers; the Graeco-Arabic translation movement -- and its connection with Medieval Judaeo-Christian philosophy is covered, albeit in an indirect manner. Chinese and Indian philosophy is also touched upon, but not in the detail and depth that it deserves. Otherwise the familiar luminaries of Western philosophy are given their fair share.

The technical terminology is exhaustively covered, with cross-references offering further elaboration for the curious.

What would make the book even more valuable, however, would be an historical introduction (with maps and illustrations). References and bibliographies at the end of each entry is another desideratum.

Some have reviled the work because of its slighting of Derrida and his "philosophy". But I must confess that I personally find the conspicuous absence of the "Metaphysics of Presence" gratifying.
