I couldn't put it down
When I first looked through this book. I was captivated by the variety of people and settings. Boys and girls of different races and ethnicities, playing, learning, fighting, working, struggling, hoping. I couldn't put the book down. I had to keep looking, to see who and what would appear on the next page.

I trust anyone would have the same reaction. But don't stop there with the photographs. This is much more than a photo album. Take the time to read the captions, the authors' commentary, and most of all, the words (letters, diary entries, conversations, etc.) of the children themselves. You won't be disappointed. Rather, you may find, like I did, that the photographs become even more real, more poignant, more personal, and more moving than they did at first glance. And, once again, you won't be able to put them down.

Whatever your notions and conceptions of childhood and of United States history and policy, this book will certainly broaden your understanding, intellectually and emotionally, of both.

Archery at the Dark of the Moon: Poetic Problems in Homer's Odyssey

Ian Myles Slater on On Intriguing Look at Odysseus
Homeric criticism is a very large field, and I can't claim to have read more than the smallest fraction of it, or even of what is available in English. When I last counted, I owned more translations of either "The Iliad" or "The Odyssey" than I do books about either, or about the two combined. However, I suspect that I have read a fair amount for a non-classicist, and "Archery at the Dark of the Moon" is among my favorites.

I don't agree with Austin's arguments on many points, notably those involving oral-formulaic theory, but they are all clearly made, pertinent, and usually contribute something to an understanding of "The Odyssey." It is in part a close reading, in part a sustained argument over theories of reading and interpretation, and certainly not a good place for someone to start. For those with some background, in both Homeric issues and critical theory, it will be rewarding reading.

I first read the book within a year or two of its original appearance, and I have a clear recollection that it changed the way I next read "The Odyssey," a work that was long familiar to me. Don't ask me to sort out how at this date. When I re-read Austin in the mid-1990s, I was surprised at how familiar it still seemed; I had assimilated that much. For me, that marks it as an extremely impressive book.

an exquisite combination of beauty and occult science
all those strange occult symbols and cryptic passages you knew nothing about have been transfered to canvas, AND WITH A HIERARCHY OF STRUCTURE AND CORRESPONDENCE, from the kabbalah, western alchemy, lucid dreaming, to dante's inferno, you'll find graphic descriptions of it here, but if you expect to come out smarter after reading this book, (you won't) you'll be more confused than ever, but hey, at least you'll know what questions to ask paul if you ever see him, hehe, anyway if i could own one art book it would be this one, if you're interested in physics or the occult you need this one, i had the pleasure of seeing the works in person at his exhibition in austin texas it was awesome, i just wonder where i can buy the art now with a college students salary?

Steamy story behind the publication of Emily's poetry...
Emily Dickinson is often a religious poet, and more often than many think, an erotic one. She is famous for her mysteries and contradictions and elusiveness. She died and left more than l700 poems, many almost indecipherable, and a number of them "uncertainly finished." Her sister Vinnie wanted the works to see print, but could not persuade her brother Austin's wife Sue to get the job done, so she turned to Austin's mistress, Mabel, who was also married. This is the lovers' story, told through 13 years of self-justifying letters and diary entries. More importantly, it is the story of how Mabel took on the job of copying and editing the poems to please her lover, and perhaps to irritate her enemy, Sue. Emily became famous about five years after she died due to Mabel's efforts. Polly Longsworth did a fine job condensing love letters and diary entries to give us a picture of these tormented souls, whose relationships all ended badly. The actual love letters between Austin and Mabel clearly show that neither had Emily's literary talent, but both had her passion. Where Emily apparently suppressed carnality, her brother and his "other woman" reveled in it. If you are as fascinated by Emily's life as you are by her poetry, this part of the tale, while largely occurring after she died, is essential to know. A very worthwhile addition to the saga of Emily Dickinson.

The history of Austin College is the story of the Lone Star
Chartered in 1849, only a few years after the Republic of Texas became a state, the story of Austin College is the history of the State of Texas itself.

The effects of change ... war, depression, economic boom, and social turmoil among them ... on the small Presbyterian liberal arts college, shows the state's development in microscosm.

Moreover, one story after another points to the importance of individuals who have the will to continue development in the face of adversity, from inaugural trustee General Sam Houston through the current day.

Austin EMS Responding: Emergency Medical Services in Central Texas Prepare for a Regional Future (Working Paper No. 94)
Published in Paperback by Univ Texas at Austin, Office of Publications (01 November, 2000)
Author: Rebecca S. Christie
Amazon base price: $8.00

Very good research on a much neglected subject
R.S. Christie exposes a complicated network of interdependencies, relationships and problems in a seemingly narrow area of government. Yet, this work can be used as a model for anyone interested in the old "Where does the money go to?" question in the area of Government Science. Christie's writing is fluent and crystal-clear and she clearly has a good grasp of the inner workings of the Austin government. The US has long been debating issue regarding public spending in the area of Health Care. This work is an example of how some basic problems can be unlocked. I'd call it "A Barefoot Model for Problems in Government Spending". We usually talk of "taxpayers' money" - and this scientific work does an important service to those of us who wonder why red tape does seem to get worse every year. Highly specialized, yes, but recommended without doubt.

This book is great whether you are new to the Austin area or have lived here all of your life. There is information from a list of area parks to schools to where you renew your drivers license. Basic information that we need everyday but often don't know where to find as well as historic information about buildings and parts of town are included. It is great.

Terrific history with excellent photos and drawings
If you want to see and read about Austin's history, this is the book for you. The book covers Austin's story from its inception in the late 1830s to the mid-1980s. Overall, I learned how Austin evolved into the city it now is.

Having just read Steven Saylor's "A Twist at the End" and visited the O. Henry Museum, I was most interested in Austin's history during the last two decades of the 19th century. Readers wanting to know more about other parts of the city's history will find that the text and graphical content puts each stage of Austin's development into a useful perspective.

I learned...and thoroughly enjoyed the process.
