Everything you need
This book really brings together every aspect of converged network architecture in one place. From voice communication networks to data networks to voice packet processing to a softswitch model for IP, this book has it all.

The best written book on the Voice over IP... 100% CLEAR.
If you read Ibe's ATM book and like it get ready because you are going to LOVE this book even more. Dr.IBE knows his staff.

If you are a technical person this book will became your bible. If you are not a technical person this book will make you feel as if you were technical but most important will help you understand the subject in not time. (SALES, Managers, QA... Guys take note).

I do not know how he does it but a difficult subjects become clear after he explains them. I been following his writing and I must say that there is no one in my opinion who can explain complicated subjects the way he does. Check his ATM book and you will understand what I mean.

WELL DONE IBE...

Good, broad coverage
This is a great book that goes beyond VoIP. It covers all major network architectures, and the latest enabling protocols like SIP, H.323, MPLS, and H.248. I found the discussions of Voice packet processing and Access schemes particularly helpful.

Best book to use for preparing for the ASE exam!
Chek-Chart's ASE Study Guides are the best books available for preparing for the ASE exams. I have used all eight books to prepare for each of the ASE exams. Without these books I would have had a much more difficult time with the exams.

Thanks Chek-Chart for making such a great book!

The Haynes General Motors Automatic Transmission Overhaul Manual (Techbook Series)

Haynes GM AutomAtic Transmission Overhaul Manual
This book is excellently written To be an invaluable to to anyone interested in rebuilding a General Motors automatic transmission. It gives a good theoretical base to start from, describes the needed tools, and give excellent step by step instructions.

The only negative thing that I can say about this manual is that it only covers four models. Covered are the TH 200-4R, TH 700-R4 TH 350,and the TH 400. Also, only the mechanical versions of the four speed transmissions are covered.

Since these are probably the most common models, these limitations don't really decrease the value of this book. Definatly a must have addition to any true Motor Head's book collection.

Outstanding Piece of Work
Voice over IP Technologies is an outstanding piece of work, reflecting much of Mark Miller's exceptional knowledge of voice and data communications systems and multi-protocol networks. He is, in fact and without question, one of the leading experts in the field of network design, analysis and troubleshooting across the LAN, MAN and WAN domains. And he is a leading authority on ATM, Frame Relay and the TCP/IP protocol suite ... and their meaningful applications.

The value of all that expertise is much greater value, of course, if it can be shared effectively with others. Mark Miller's considerable skills as an author have been honed in a dozen or so previous books, and are well demonstrated in this excellent work. The information is well organized and clearly stated, and is supported with numerous graphics. There are numerous appendixes, including a most helpful glossary. The work also is very well indexed, which I consider to be extremely important for future reference.

As a technologist, I can appreciate the accuracy of the information contained in this book. As a consultant, I can appreciate its integrity. As an author, I can appreciate the care with which the subject matter has been researched, the way it has been organized, and the thoroughly understandable manner in which it is presented. When I need to research a technical topic for a book, article or column I am writing, or for a consulting project, I generally skip past the several hundred other references on my shelf and reach for one of Mark Miller's books. When the topic is VoIP, I reach for this one first. I recommend that you do the same.

Cisco Packetized Voice & Data Integration

Packed with info, but poorly written
I'd have rated this book much lower if it wasn't cram packed full of great information. The problem is, the writing style makes it impossible to read this book from cover to cover if you don't already know everything in it. If ever an IT book was screaming for a glossary, this was the one. The author habitually uses terms and acronyms as if the reader already knew them, and then goes on to define them chapters later. At least on one occassion, I found a term used in chapter 2 defined in chapter 3. The definition of the term used another that wasn't defined until chapter 5. As said, there's no glossary, and the index is entirely too sparse to cover for that omission. Reading this book WILL teach you well, but don't sit down with it without a reference library and/or net connection handy to look up the terms that you can't find any other way.

Cisco Packetized Voice & Data Integration
Caputo provides an excellent balance between theoretical background and Cisco specific information. Chapter 3, "voice concepts for data engineers" provides just the right level of information needed to understand voice technology, and the challenges of packetized delivery.

Another nice featue is the clearly tabulated facts and figures, which make this book an excellent reference for even the experienced reader.

Overall, Caputo has provided a text that contains everything required to understand and implement successful voice and data integrated networks with Cisco technology.

Great book for network engineers w/o telephone experience!
The information is geared towards the network engineer that has limited phone knowledge, which was perfect for my own background.

The book has excellent technical accuracy and the data is presented well. The book requires relatively strong strength in a networking background because many references are made to associated technologies without explaining them. Explaining such things would be outside the scope of this book.

When/if you read this book, try to seek out unfamiliar terms in the index or look them up elsewhere. Most of the data is relevant and worth understanding as you go along.

Reading and understanding this book gave me a great understanding of VoIP and I now believe that I can effectively evaluate and implement VoIP solutions.

The CCIE program has publicly announced inclusion of VoIP in the CCIE Routing-Switching laboratory exam. Through my experience, I belive that this book is a valuable resource in acquiring the VoIP knowledge necessary to achieve this certification.

Automatic Transmissions and Transaxles : Fundamentals of Ope
This book is good for students and new engineers who work in auto industry. The examples cover transmissions of big three auto makers, GM, Ford and Chrysler. I like this book also because it is easy to learn. I would suggest that the author put more more examples of new transmissions in the book.

VoiceXML for very beginners
The book is a general overview of telephony application and a thin introduction to VoiceXML. It covers important matters in a very rapid and unprecise way. It contains even errors in the examples.

Very Complete Coverage
As one of the inventors of VoiceXML, I've spent 3+ years explaining voice markup. I just wish I had had this book to hand out to people. This book covers the basics of all the various technologies that come together to make VoiceXML what it is. Whether your background is Speech, Telephony, Web technologies, or even all of the above, you will learn something by reading this book.

The coverage of the VoiceXML concepts is also very helpful and will steer you around many of the early mis-steps that developers make when first using VoiceXML.

If there is any place to find fault, it's with the reference material vis-a-vis current implementations. As others have observed, the book discusses VoiceXML 1.0 and the 2.0 draft. In the real world, it's my impression that very few interpreters ever did or ever will implement exactly VoiceXML 1.0, nor does it seem likely that the particular draft version of VoiceXML 2.0 discussed in the book has been or will ever be implemented. The harsh reality is that there are many VoiceXML vendors, and they are mostly somewhere between the 1.0 and 2.0 specs. I think this is good for the industry, but it does make the author's life more difficult!

Nice Book
I am working on web based Telecommunications product development. We have to introduce voiceXML features in our product. I bought this book couple of weeks back. This book covers all the basic concepts include conventional telephony input, output and call control features, including: touch-tone input, automatic speech recognition support, audio recording (e.g., for voice mail), the ability to play recordings (such as WAV files), speech synthesis from plain or annotated text, call transfer, conferencing, and other advanced call management features.

I have easily learned XML-based definition with an HTML-like appearance. This book is more useful for experienced web content programmers. The author explained every topic with real example. The "Hello World" example in this book is great.

Can we say "useless"?
Upon first opening the book I expected it to cover everything about transmissions. Well it did, theoretically speaking. It showed pictures and examples, and it had some shots of the Ford AOD transmission. However, when it began to give diagrams showing the bolt hole patterns - it left out the AOD! When it showed the in-depth diagrams of all the transmission parts, it also left out the AOD. To top it off, the book barely covers any model-specific instructions but rather showed vague and "universal" instructions. I'm going to try the ATSG AOD manual and see how that goes. But this book is a waste of money, try to find a model-specific guide.

great but ...
this book is good for beginners or people who are just learning the ropes about automatic transmission. lacks the depth and technical concepts that a repair manual should have. still ... very helpful on a whole

Excellent choice for beginners
If you want to start repairing automatic transmissions this is your first book!. It will help you introduce and understand the basics and theory of operation of most auto transmissions out there. Once you get thru this book, is just a matter of getting the service manual of the specific transmission you want to repair and the repair kit to be able to succeed, like me, on your first overhaul.
