excellent photography
This is a great book with many stunning photographs. There are lots of rare and old BMWs featured, and each one is represented with multiple photographs, including large photos spanning two pages. A really great book for the price. Informative text in three languages.

A Photohistorian's Delight
BMW is simply a classy tribute to the art and science of automotive design. The photographs (contemporary and archival) are beyond compare; any photographer could learn about lighting and design by studying the photos that "make" this book. The historical narrative is engaging and extremely well organized. The book itself is of solid construction and well bound; the dust jacket is magificently simplistic in rich blue with the distinctive roundel as the focal point. Paper quality is top grade, heavy-weight with gloss finish. A perfect gift for any car enthusiast!

Well worth the money. Pictures are great!
This is one of the best books I have seen on BMWs and is a steal for the price. Pictures range from the first BMW made forward to 1999. Very professional and gorgeous scenery. A must have for BMR enthusiasts.

Great coffee-table book
A great book which covers history of BMW cars, very specific technical details and troubleshooting, informative message posts, and very amusing comics. A very appropriate title. I wouldn't buy this as a service manual (though it does have some great tips, see the Bentley service manual if you need a great tech. manual). An excellent book which I am still enjoying.

BMW-316 1985 year OILSERVICE
BMW-316 1985 year OILSERVICE RESE

Excellent book, by BMW enthusiass for all auto enthusiasts.
This book is a collection of articles written for the BMW Car Club of America magazine. It answers many questions about driving and maintanence of BMW automobiles. Much of the information should be of interest to anyone who enjoys a fine car and driving though, not just the BMW owner. It is full of many interesting topics.

A Must-Own for any BMW racing enthusiast!
Taking into account the difficult task of giving fair representation to BMW's extensive motor racing history, this text serves as the definitive tome on BMW's racing exploits. For the most part it covers BMW's sedan racing from the 60's to 80's, with a smattering of formula car history thrown in, too. The text describes the overall racing history and details quite extensively the technical aspects of the various cars. This is augmented by a fantastic collection of photos of racecars, homologated streetcars, and technical drawings. While it isn't cheap (even on Amazon) it's well worth it.

Best Car + Best Motorsport = Best Book
I bought this book at amazon.com's great price when I knew the original edition was difficult (and expensive) to locate. The book, with its great commentary and numerous photos, really shows the essence of the motorsport successes (and failures) of one of the world's great auto makers. If you are interested in racing (and BMWs in particular), I very much recommend this book.

phenomenally detailed
This book may well be the ultimate bmw book. It details everything down to the tee. If you have an avid interest in BMW, this book is a "MUST HAVE NOW" title.

gimme
I need this book urgentl

Very nice book with hundreds of wartime action-photographs
The book contains hundreds of photograhps of mainly the BMW R12 and some of the R75. All photographs are taken in Worldwar II and represent valuable historic information on how these bikes were used in combat. It also reveals the strategies being used by motorcycle companies and shows some of the human suffering of this era. Furthermore it contains valuable technical information, drawings and exploded views of the BMW R75. Highly recommended to anyone interested in this part of the history or for those who are involved in BMW R12 or R75 restoration.

Best BMW bike book available, so far?
Having on my shelf just about every BMW motorcycle book available on Amazon[.com] (and I did not pay the high prices currently showing for some titles, even though I bought them via Amazon[.com] vendors!), I must say, as far as quality of photographs, this is the best!

Text is also very good. Some books on BMWs that are/were available are very slight - at least one of the ones I bought via Amazon is a remainder from England - a "packaged" book; part of a series on various makes of bike, with little text and photos used in several titles.

Having owned a BMW (R100RT) when I lived in London, England, and now a R1100RT, I can attest to their being fine machines -bikes that deserve such a worthy book on them.

I agree with the author's review that many other books on BMWs focus on the early history and concern earlier types and do not contain much on the later models. I think the author is arguably not stating the obvious reason here. This is maybe because they were written before the current "oilhead" twins were produced so understandably could not cover them, or if revised then the books were merely slightly updated after these newer types arrived on the scene so include only a chapter or so on them?

This book being recently published is (obviously)as a result more timely on its coverage.

As a rider of Triumphs some years ago, I'm saving up to buy the similar volume covering that historical make as well - not seen it but I'm sure it will make a fine companion to this title.

A great book at a reasonable price, considering the wealth of color photos, for any motorcycle fan and especially for BMW riders.

Author's review
In researching this book, I read just about everything ever published about BMW motorcycles. Frankly, the early information was difficult to sort through and often contradictory, even though this is the era that has been written about most extensively. The informational value of my book lies in the coverage of BMW motorcycles after 1969. The motorcycles of the modern era have been covered in far less detail, as if other authors were not interested in the motorcycles built after that date.

But the real value of this book is the stunning photography provided by Brian J. Nelson, one of the finest photographers working in the field of motor journalism. It's unfortunate that there is no photography from the book posted on this website, because Brian has transformed this work from just another motorcycle history book into a true work of art.

On a more sophomoric level, I found writing this book rewarding because I was able to use a conjugation of the verb "fornicate," and also because I was able to alude to the interbreeding practices of European royalty prior to World War I. Incorporating these things into a BMW motorcycle history tested my creative skills.

Comprehensive Manual
This book is quite a tome and seems to cover everything to keep your K series in top shape. Anyone who has some mechanical ability and wants to do their own service and mechanical work should have few problems by following the step by step instructions. The only complaint I have is the continuous warnings about various possible dangers; for example, using petrol/gas as a cleaning solvent. Do we really need to have these warnings repeated ad nauseum, sometime 5 times on the same page? I think the book could be 20 pages less without these! I suppose the warnings are there to avoid litigation problems in the USA. Otherwise, a very useful book. I personally would have no hesitation in tackling any repair work with this book at hand.

Brilliant
This is great its just like using the factory manual without having to translate from German :)

Robert Bently Always makes great repair manuals.
From my first RB repair manual VW Golf 85-92, I was able tocomplete many tasks from brakes to suspension then even did my ownclutch... Then now with my BMW this book is nothing but outstanding. Does not even compare on any scale to Haynes or Chilton.

Beemer Maintenance Guide for Do-It-Yourselfers
No manual can be all things to all home mechanics, but the Haynes manual comes close. A five-scale degree-of-difficulty rating for every task tells the reader if their reach is greater than their grasp. So even if your not going to install new pistons, or just change the engine oil, the Haynes book makes great reading for the rider who wants to understand more about that shiny new Beemer in their driveway. For whatever tasks you choose, read thoroughly before opening your toolbox. To do something as straighforward as changing front brake pads requires reading sections from two different chapters, plus a listing of torque settings at yet another page. It saves ink and paper, but not your time.

An absolute must have for boxer owners
This book is a must have for BMW boxer owner, even if you don't plan on doing a lot of maintenance on yourself. It goes into complete tear-down and rebuild (God forbid I would attempt such a thing on my own!) so you can look through what your local dealer will be doing to your machine and you don't: 1. look like a dork when they talk to you about some maintenance procedures 2. get embezzeled by one of those crook-type mechanics.

Don't get me wrong - there is some stuff even the most unexperienced mechanic can take care of in this book. It covers the steps of all recommended maintenance schedules and a lot of these steps anybody can do. But it goes into much more detail also.

A well-written manual for the BMW motorcycle
Let me start by saying that I've got a 1999 R1100RT and this manual is applicable to my bike as well. I'm not the most mechanically-minded bike owner out there, but this book has great pictures and descriptions that have helped me ease my fears and tackle a few basic tasks (so far). Individual operations are rated on a 1 - 5 scale of difficulty, and tool requirements are clearly spelled out. I regularly check several BMW-related web sites, and they strongly recommend this book also (which is how I found it).

Given that the BMW Shop Manual is over $100, I figured that I'd try this one first. Now that I've received and read it, I see no need to spend the extra $$$ - this manual covers all the stuff I'm likely to attempt on my bike (and a lot more).
