A Massage Therapy School Must!
This book has been incredibly helpful, from day one of massage therapy school. I have learned more about muscle anatomy from it than from our required anatomy book. The author uses real live humans with extremely realistic drawn muscles and bones superimposed on them, which gives you an excellent spatial perception of the anatomy and where it lies in the body. I HIGHLY recommend this book for massage therapy students, practitioners and pretty much anyone interested in muscular anatomy. STUPENDOUS BOOK!!!!!

A MUST if you enjoy massage
After graduating from school I thought,"How many more books do I really need?" But I have no regrets buying this one- my therapist friends have borrowed it and realized they want it, as well.

Artists have actually painted the muscles, including origin and insertion, over the photograph of each models body. Landmarks and hand positions are so easy to follow, and synergist muscles also noted for treatment purposes. I use this a lot as I work on clients form my home, it is very informative and well formatted. Various strokes as well as pressure and trigger points are also noted.
Not necesssarily for beginners, but perfect for expanding, or reviewing, what you already know. This book would also be very helpful in studying efforts for the NCBTMB national exams. I found it it perfect in review for my test.

EXCELLENT
This book was wonderfully planned and executed. I am trying to get this book as a standard text book for my students!!!!

Great Work..

THE Bodywork Bible!
We are certified massage therapists in the San Francisco Bay area. When clients ask us about lesser known or unfamiliar modalities, this is the book we reach for. It is concise, well-written, easy to understand from the layman's point of view. It has even helped us in the enhancement of our own practice by providing a guide to further studies and research to improve our practice.

Extremely well-written and well-organized book.
I am a teacher, and so when I read a book, I'm always very aware of how well-organized and well-written it is. I picked up "Bodywork" because I've had lower back pain off and on for years. I was interested in trying some hands-on therapy to help it. Bodywork helped me find some relief for it. My pain is not completely gone, but I am better able to alleviate and manage it than with pills.

What struck me most about "Bodywork" is that in addition to being very informative, it is extremely well-organized and well-written. This makes it a very handy reference book. I found it educational and inspirational, without being "preachy". I recommend this book to any other readers who are interested in learning more about how hands-on therapies can help them.

OUTSTANDING OVERVIEW OF THE FASCINATING WORLD OF MASSAGE
This is an excellent overview of the fascinating world of massage and body-mind healing therapies. I've always been interested in massage, but had a hard time figuring out what all the different types are. Thomas Claire's BODYWORK helped demystify this world for me. I especially liked the fist-hand account of the experience of different kinds of massage -- they were really helpful. For instance, the first-hand account of a reflexology session helped me understand what foot massage is all about, and to know that I would like to try it.

Perfection!
Absolutely the best bodywork book I've ever read, bar none. I read the first edition of this book about 15 years ago, and it was a big eye-opener for me; I saw the body in a whole new light, it gave me things to think about and apply for years. I wish Deane Juhan would write a lot more books.

Great read for anyone interested in healthcare and bodywork
Interesting perspective on how the human body is put together. Well-written and enjoyable to read, yet full of detailed descriptions.

awesome
Great overview of human anatomy and physiology from an integrative perspective. Brings together a lot of scientific information in an easily understood and relevant fashion that particularly explains many aspects of physiology as they apply to massage and bodywork.

Great reference
I used this book for the Non-western portion of the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. It was quite helpful for this portion. I also used the following three volumes:
The Ultimate Study Guide for the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork: Key Review Questions and Answers
(Topics: Human Anatomy, Physiology and Kinesiology) Vol 1
(ISBN: 0971999643)

The Ultimate Study Guide for the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork: Key Review Questions and Answers
(Topics: Clinical Pathology and Recognition of Various Conditions) Vol 2
(ISBN: 0971999651)

The Ultimate Study Guide for the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork: Key Review Questions and Answers
(Topics: Massage Therapy and Bodywork: Theory, Assessment and Application. Professional Standards, Ethics and Business Practices) Vol 3
(ISBN: 097199966X)
These four books helped me to easily pass the NCETMB. The last three books give examples of the type of questions that are asked on the test. Believe me the guides are so complete for every possible topic given on the NCETMB.

Top-notch Book!
Sohn combines traditional Oriental medical principles with a Western approach to organ dysfunction. A variety of techniques are explained, including the use of traditional points and new points from personal clinical experience. Includes extensive illustrations, detailed treatments, and nutritional and exercise recommendations.

An Amazing Book for the Oriental Bodywork Therapist
Of course I'm prejudice because of this is the text for ourschool [online] but this book that explainsthe complex style of Amma is an amazing reference for just about anyone interested in hands on techniques in Oriental Bodywork Therapy. Channel location, diagnosis , actual technique patterns etc are contained in this ancient technique Mrs Sohn brought to America years ago. And the price discount at Amazon.com is pretty amazing as well.

Highly Recommended!
The author has integrated several different forms of body therapies, including Japanese shiatsu and anma, Chinese tuina, and Western osteopathic, physiotherapeutic, and therapeutic massage, and bodywork techniques. Beginning with a concise summary of the history of shiatsu in Japan, he describes the Oriental perceptions of cosmology (yin/yang, five elements), physiology (qi, blood, jing, shen, jin, ye, zangfu), anatomy (including illustrations of channels and acupoints), examination, and diagnosis. Part Three describes preparation for practice, including descriptions of finger and hand techniques, Western anatomical markers, and preparation of the treatment area. The treatment method presented in the text is a basic meridian-oriented full-body shiatsu/anma treatment, designed for general relaxation and supplementation of the entire body. With clear illustrations and photos on nearly every page of the book, this work is very informative and useful.

Outstanding Instruction for any level
Hi, this book is wonderful! Written with the intent of combining the educational text book information but including pictures, diagrams and language that would enable one with no formal experience learn some shiatsu massage skills. I am working towards my massage therapy license and this book is a gem. I unfortunately bought this book from a store a and am kicking my-self for not going through Amazon.com, because I would have saved money. Oh well live and learn... ;-)

Deep Bodywork and Personal Development

Author: Jack W Painter
Amazon base price: $15.00
Used price: $3.79
Collectible price: $10.33

Very enlightening
Painter's view that we won't change our bodies until the underlying subconscious pattern is changed is the key to health! I also like his ideas on "the give and take of sharing" during a session. A practitioner must reveal personal parts of themselves to bring about a genuine change in the client. The book outlines the basics of structural integration "recipe".

Deep Bodywork and Personal Development
This book was a very good one. Anyone who has read books by Reich, Lowen, or Ida Rolf will find this to be very interesting and a must for ones library. Jack Painter combines Wilhelm Reich's and Ida Rolf's ideas and others and explains very "clearly" from his own experiance how he finds these methods work together. Those who have an interest in psychology and/or bodywork will find much within the pages of this book! I found it very good and suggest it to anyone with an interest in these areas and in learning more about how working with the body and the mind together can bring about change within the person!

Excellent reference
This well-written and concise book gives information on many type of pathologies the massage therapist should be familar with. I also used this book as a reference for the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork and found it pretty helpful. However, if you are looking for the type of questions asked on the NCETMB, I would buy the following which is also sold on amazon.com:
The Ultimate Study Guide for the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork: Key Review Questions and Answers
(Topics: Clinical Pathology and Recogintion of Various Conditions) Vol 2 (ISBN: 0971999651)

Very good for learning pathologies
I am a massage therapist and used this book to teach myself the various pathologies. I recommend this book highly to any massage therapist who needs more knowledge in pathology.

A Must Have!
This book was recommended to me by another Massage Therapist. I am so glad I took her recommendation. The book is fantastic! I use it a lot and can always find what information I need. Therapists, you won't go wrong in purchasing this book. I highly recommend it for new graduates or any Therapist that wants current information at their fingertips.

Good reference for the boards
This is a good reference for the NCETMB (National Certification Test). It gives summaries of a lot of information for things needed to know for the NCETMB. I was also recommended another few study guides for the NCETMB by other massage therapists who passed the NCETMB the first time. I'm glad I took their advice because these study guides were just awesome for the type of questions to prepare for on the NCETMB. The study guides I'm referring to is in three volumes that are the following and are available on amazon:
The Ultimate Study Guide for the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork: Key Review Questions and Answers (Volume 1 (isbn: 0971999643), Volume 2 (isbn: 0971999651), and Volume 3 (isbn: 097199966X) by Patrick Leonardi
These last three study guides helped me with passing the national certification test easily the first time. I highly recommend all four books. It's well worth the money.

Very good reference for NCBTMB
My study group and I used this book to review some facts for the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. However, this book is written in a simple style that makes reading an easier task. There were some good information in the book for the test. ...

Great Preperation
This book, which seems small in comparison to some more comprehensive massage texts, is in actuality much more thourough and concise. After each chapter, there is an exam/review section structured after the actual national test. This is great practice for anyone about to take the NCBTMB. I highly recommend it.
