A Startling & Rare Translation of the German Classic!
Hughes' translation seems as rich, exciting & electric to modern readers as the original text must have been to audiences a century ago. It avoids the stiff awkwardness that former English translations have been known for, while still remaining true to Wedekind's dark symbolism and expressionistic overtones. A must-read for theater-lovers and practictioners alike.

Just as relevant today as a century ago!
Spring awakening explores the sexual awakening of teenage boys and girls in Germany in the late 1800's. It was shocking in its day, and still is somewhat today, despite the openness of our society.
The Frank Wedekind play has been updated, set to music, and will open as a major Broadway Musical in Spring, 2003. Watch for it, you will be blown away! And be sure to read the play first. You'll be amazed at how true the production is to Frank Wedekind's fine work.

Brilliant Play by a brilliant Writer
as an actor I have just performed this play I was Mechior one of the lead roles this book has a mixture of teenage experiences, a must read for all directors and actors if you ever get a chance to perform it then make sure you do

If You Like Rick Warren You'll Love This Book, Too...
Practical advice for putting the book's ideas into practice in "real life" recalls the functional (and fun) style of a Rick Warren book.

A great, and quick, read that gave concrete examples, plans for action, and that little boost of inspiration that it often takes to get readers working toward the practices they read about.

I'd recommend the book, and offer criticism only to chapter 4, but overall a great few hours spent learning.

New Found Love
This book teaches the reader how to create lasting relationships with each other, by "unlearning" the wrong views of Love we have learned over the years through rejection, abandonment, abuse and conditional love, and focusing on God's unconditional love. You will learn, after completing the exercises throughout the book, what has influenced your personal view of love. This book is full of practical ways of improving current loving relationships and mending hurting relationships. You are a few pages away from beginning the process of creating lasting "Unbreakable Bonds" with family and friends, and maybe even finding new love.

Amazing...
This book is amazing! It is very deep and can be very challenging at times but it is well worth the effort. If you think that you're ready for this type of emotional growth, I'm still praying that I am, then this book is for you.

Upgrading to Visual Basic.Net
Upgrading to .net is a must have for any developer or company that is planning to use .net.
I highly recommend this book to any developers or project managers who need to rapidly understand what's involved in upgrading to .net from VB. By purchasing this booking I upgraded a VB 5/6 to VB.Net and I'm about to deliver my first .net project on time and within budget.

As with all VB releases I was both excited and daunted by the release of .net.
Being a developer who has worked from basic to VB 6.0 I was suspicious of the learning curve involved and the bombardment of books about .net. In early February my manager informed me that a client of ours was insisting on moving their VB 6 app to use the .Net framework. Instantly before my eyes I saw late nights and busy weekends whilst adapting my VB knowledge to expand into the .Net framework.
Like many developers before me, I smiled with confidence and told my project manager this upgrade could be done. As soon as his back was turned I searched the Internet and instantly got presented myriad of books about .Net.

Scanning the list I saw a familiar name "Ed Robertson", I remember this guy from a developer day's conference. He was concise and accurate whilst presentation technical and conceptual information on how to upgrade from VB to .Net

Needless to say I purchased the book and in 10 days it arrived. By resisting the temptation to start programming and actually reading the book first. I was very quickly able to upgrade one of the smaller Apps involved in system and then with planning
I tackled with confidence the main application

This book will teach you how to upgrade and more importantly what applications can be upgraded well providing you with an in depth view into the .net framework

My recommendation is that anyone who going to use .Net should purchase this book.
It will save you hours of programming and frustration as the authors drawing on there own wealth of .net experience cleverly guide you through the stormy waters of system upgrades.

Unexpected diamond
When I first got this book, I did not think I would like it very much. After all, how much can one write on upgrading from Visual Basic to Visual Basic .NET?

While I believe most people will rewrite rather than upgrade, having experienced the wizard's decisions, this book has a lot of good advice to both make this an easier task and to make the right decisions in your current code if you have ever thought of upgrading.

While you expect this book to have a good deal on Interop, the gem here is the great explanation of remoting. While web services are the talk of the town, the ability to create server to server communication without creating another layer, is very important. For me, this section, alone, was worth the price of the ride.

For most, the upgrade information will be the most important, which should come as no suprise. If you are currently writing Visual Basic 6, you can learn a lot about setting up your own code to make sure it does not become legacy code when you move to .NET. Even more important, however, is the fact that following these suggestions will help you create better apps, as the suggestions for your current code are good suggestions whether the code will be upgraded or not.

One more nice gem before I sign off. The section on creating global components in .NET is wonderful. While most of your .NET apps are designed to sit in their own directories, knowing how to create shared components is very important for Enterprise development. If you are developing in .NET currently, this section details how to set up your own global components; this is an area where the documentation is a bit slim, so it makes a nice selling point for current .NET developers.

All it takes to migrate
With so much misinformation and speculation about migrating apps to vb.net, I decided to go straight to the horse's mouth for the word.
This book does the job. It demystifies the migration story. It shows how to migrate apps to vb.net, and has complete reference material about potential problems and how to fix them. It contained less hype and more fact than I have come to expect from Microsoft. I particularly liked the sections that list the differences between vb6 and vb.net. This is exactly the information that I was looking for and the only place that I have been able to find it. Other notable chapters cover COM Interop, migrating COM+ services and troubleshooting migration problems.
With the help of this book, I have migrated several of my applications to vb.net, a much easier job than a lot of the reports and newsgroups have made it sound.

Vb.net is NOT a whole new language for us developers to learn, I believe it adds a new dimension to the same language ensuring that we as Vb developers will still have a job in 10 years when java users are well and truly obsolete! I recommend this book to everybody moving apps from vb6 to vb.net.

Bring on vb.net Microsoft, I'm ready!

Biology of Fishes

Good Overview
When I took ichthyology in college, this was the textbook. The instructor was not terribly excited about it, but thought it was better than the one used previously. This is a good overview that covers a lot of territory. If you are looking for a catalogue of fishes, this is probably not what you want, but if you want to know something such as feeding strategies, you'll find just about every one of them covered along with an example. One of the problems with covering a lot of topics is that undue attention is given to examples that otherwise might not merit such attention. For example some large fish families don't get that much attention while others which may be smaller, but more specialized, get more attention to illustrate how they are different. The result is that if you are looking for detailed information about a certain group, you are not going to find it. However if you want to know about fishes as a whole, this will get you there. There is a black and white photograph, but otherwise the illustrations are all drawings. Some of the drawings are obviously taken from photographs while others are more stylized. Many of the drawings are anatomical illustrations showing organs and structures in a way that could not be photographed anyway. The price of the book probably has to do with being a college textbook. I paid a lot less for it 22 years ago. The passage of time has not diminished the usefulness of the book and this edition is a later one than the one I have. For today's market, I would say that this book is good value for the money.

Poignant reminder that in family bonds are our own seeds
I liked this book for its quiet yet consistent assertion that "happy" families can be as varied as the individuals who comprise them - that "family" can be a changing dynamic as opposed to set mould into which we must reluctantly "squeeze" ourselves on occasion. I also liked the underlying (i.e., not in-your-face) theme which suggested the many ways in which we are fundamentally alike, despite and/or because of family circumstances. As such, there were certain "characters" I didn't want to let go of; I wanted to know what happened next! Yet it's a satifying read in and unto itself.

REALLY OPENED MY EYES!
This book was so honest and warm - it acknowledges the problems families have, but also talks about how and why we continue to have relationships with our parents and siblings - in spite of it all!

Learned much
This was the second book I read on financial markets. There is a wealth of information on all kinds of financial stuff.
I specially liked the Options chapter. I think the Stocks chapter was an overkill but still there was much useful info.
Pretty organized and fairly unbiased. The retirement piece at the end of the book was definitely underdone but I don't think this book was meant to cover retirement anyways.
The author doesn't try to portray the financial markets as a road to riches. He lets the reader draw his own conclusions from the topics covered. An educational read overall.

A must read for anyone with money
I learned a great deal from this book and I can tell you it is worth every cent of its price, which I considered high before purchasing. The author has a very creative style and yet is able to explain even the most complicated information in an easy to understand and often humorous way. Even if you don't think you will take advantage of all the knowledge you will gain from reading it, I suggest you do read it all, as you never know what may prove useful in the future.

Room On the Roof

Great Novella For Kids
Ruskin Bond penned this novella when he was only 17 years old in 1951, and I think it is an excellent book for everyone but for young people in particular. The story started in this book is continued in "Vagrants In The Valley", and if you get this book, I suggest you also get "Vagrants" as it completes and complements this book nicely. Both books are semi-autobiographical and offer a very good glimpse into the "real India". Although it may be said to lack a certain depth or maturity, the book hold up surprisingly well with repeated readings due to its perennial freshness and wonder. We follow our young hero as he leaves a domineering and hostile, suffocating environment with his English guardian to explore the world beyond the protestant community that he was raised in. He essentially becomes a vagrant, but he discovers his freedom as well, and goes on to make friends with several other street children of the bazaar. He gets his first job, falls in love with an older woman, and grows a good deal in the book, before taking to the road and leaving his hometown when it no longer has anything to offer him. The end of the book will kind of leave you hanging if you don't read the sequel. By itself, I would give this book a three-star rating, but when combined with "Vagrants" I would promote it to a four-star. The innocence of a young writer and the yearning for adventure shine through particularly well in this little delight of a book.

The Room On The Roof - by Ruskin Bond
This enchanting novel by Ruskin Bond is written in his trademark close-to-nature style. The world-renowned author writes from his true experience of the world. This story is autobiographical in nature.

This novel takes the reader on a journey of rural India through the eyes of a 16-year old boy .The panorama of the advancing Indian Monsoon adds a melodious romance to the novel. Bond’s bold yet touching style of writing combined with the intriguing story and plot make this novel an engaging adventure. Winner of the John Llewellyn Rhys Memorial Prize in 1957, this book is a page-turner.

Like the Indian bazaar itself, the book is filled with smells, sights, sounds, confusion and subtle organization of ordinary Indian life.

Rusty, the hero of the novel is unhappy with his strict guardian & being confined to the declining Euopean community in Dehra Dun Finally, one day he is bold enough to venture into forbidden Indian Territory. He meets ‘Somi’ the Sikh boy. A boy of strange perpetual rejoices, he soon becomes Rusty’s best friend. ‘Ranbir’, Hindu by caste, and the strongest wrestler in the bazaar invokes in Rusty a rebellious spirit that earns him his freedom for life. Then there is Suri. Bespectacled and owlish to behold, Suri possesses an almost criminal cunning, and is both respected and despised by all who know him. His interests are confined to people and their privacies; which privacies, when known to Suri, are made public.

After running away from home, his newfound friends’ shelter him and soon he gets a job as an English teacher of Mr. Kapoor’s son. Mr. Kapoor was once a rich man who has lost his job because of his addiction to alcohol.

His only support is his lovely wife Meena who soon takes a special place in Rusty’s heart. But the most important member of the family is their son Kishan, who also becomes Rusty’s best friend. They have a lovely time together and Meena gives Rusty the best gift of his life. A lonely room on their house’s roof. His very own room! Scarcely furnished, but incredibly close to the Banyan tree, and nature in general. A place he could call home.He called it ‘ The room on the Roof ’
