naked + bonds = easy reading
as everyone learned when the stock market bubble burst 2 years ago, diversification in your investment portfolio is an absolute necessity. yet what do you do if you know nothing about the bond market, my advice is read this book. Michael Brandes explains how the bond market works in laymans terms and does not overwhelm you with technical financial jargon. A great book for anyone interested in the bond side of investing.

Naked Guide to Bonds: What you need Know -- Stripped Down to
New to The Bond Market? This Book's for You!
When I was given this book as a gift, I never expected to read it since I thought it would be too difficult to understand. But, it turns out that everything is explained in a straightforward way. It's got lots of illustrations that aren't too complicated and the chapters are short, so they're easy to get through. I really liked the summary points at the beginning of each chapter and the way the author explained each type of bond and what makes them unique. This is a terric book for any amateur investor who wants to learn about bonds without having to take a course on it. I just wish there was a Naked Guide to Stocks!

A Great Book on Bonds
I read the Motley Fool Investment Guide and really liked it, so when I saw this at the bookstore with Tom Gardner's endorsement on it, I thought I'd give it a shot. Just like the Fools, this book is written for regular people and is pretty humorous (for an investment book!). The chapters are well organized so that you learn about bonds "step-by-step". It includes discussions about every type of bond and advice on how to put them into your
portfolio. It's definitely not written like a textbook -- even the complicated concepts come across clearly. In short, this is a great book. I found it easy to understand and, most importantly, full of extremely useful information.

I Married Dr. Jekyll and Woke Up Mrs. Hyde: Or What Happens to Love
Published in Paperback by ASJA Press (November, 2000)
Author: Alma H., Ph.D. Bond
Amazon base price: $22.95

Average review score:

A Powerful Volume of Women's Words
Or What Happens to Love? What can wrench apart a seemingly destined union? Why do so many marriages fail? What can we learn from the experiences of others about our own marriages? What questions would you ask of your divorced friends to find out why they think their marriages ended.

Dr. Bond put out a Divorce Questionnaire & women in droves told their stories which she presents without comment.

In my eInterview Dr. Bond answers a number of my questions which came up as I read each woman's story. This is not an easy book to read - the voices of the women vibrate from the pages in a rainbow of emotions - fury, sorrow - wry appraisal - wise hindsight - petulance & glee!

I was praying Dr. Bond would give us some Conclusions & she does, both statistical & thoughtful with Appendixes in which she reprints the Divorce Questionnaire that started it all - it was an eyeopener to answer those questions myself!

Not for the faint-hearted or for men - they'll get so wounded & angry! It's not to hurt the men that these women spoke - rather it is to heal their own wounds!

Great self-help book
Anyone who knows me understands that I seldom read non-fiction. The few non-fiction books I accept for my book review site are reviewed by my other reviewers. However, the title of this one was so unexpected that I found myself giving it a second glance, then a third, and a fourth. Curiosity being a weakness of mine, I opened it. I only wanted to convince myself that, to me, it would be boring. This would put an end to all my curiosities and I could get someone else to review it. Instead, I found myself reading the first page and never putting the book down except to grab a soda.

Dr. Alma Halbert Bond seems to share my weakness. She wanted to know why one out of every two marriages ended with divorce. Did the divorced women love their husbands when they married them? Did they marry because they were "a couple" and family or friends expected them to? Did society press them into it? Did they marry someone like their parents for security instead of love? Was there a connection between an unhappy childhood and a failed marriage? Dr. Bond interviewed 71 divorced women for answers!

The book is broken down to several categories and each have sub-categories. Dr. Bond covers:

The Physical Abusers, The Verbal Abusers, The Withholders, The Need For Space, The Unfaithful, The Abandoned Ones, The Homosexuals, Married For The Wrong Reasons, The Narcissists, He Changed After We Married, The Control Freaks, and The Good Marriage.

All her findings are within these pages! Using her experience of 30 years in psychoanalytic practice, Dr. Bond created a book that people (men or women) should read if they have been divorced, considering divorce, having problems in their marriage, or about to marry!

I proudly submit this book to my viewers and consider it to be highly recommended reading!

Fantastic
A wonderful book that showcases women's points of views of what happened to their marriages. Great conclusions. Dr. Bond does a great job of having each woman have her input and have their answers to her lengthy questionnaire shown. Highly recommended.

Good Basic Investing Information
As the title would suggest, this is very basic investing information. If you are a new investor, and seek a very broad overview of investing, and your options, then this is the book for you. I bought this book for my mother, who has never invested outside of a savings account. I read the book to be sure it would give her the information I was hoping for. It was exactly what I wanted, written in easy to follow terminology. If you're an experienced investor, this book is not for you, however if you're seeking basic investing information, give it a read.

Excellent Book for a Beginner
Covers everything a beginner needs to know and filled in a couple gaps in my personal knowledge as well. Sorts investment options into categories (short-term, long-term, growth, income, speculative, etc.) and helps you figure out which is appropriate for you. Has a section that breaks down common goals and the appropriate investment for each. Writing style is very easy to read. Highly recommended.

Packed With Knowledge!
Investment greenhorns: Read this book - Now! Can we be any clearer? Kathy Kristof has written the ideal manual for anyone mystified by the world of finance. Her clear, fact-filled book completely dispenses with the condescending tone and soothing jabber of most books in the how-to-invest genre. In their place, Kristof has compiled an enlightening compendium of elementary investment wisdom, lucid explanations of financial terms and instruments, and educational walk-thrus of stock-valuation techniques. Simply put: If you are not investing, you must read this book. Whether it's fear, ignorance or inertia that's keeping you out of the markets, Investing 101 will inspire you to put your money to work by revealing, in easy-to-understand language, exactly how it all really works. We at getAbstract recommend this book as required reading for any beginner investors, or to anyone who feels intimidated by a lack of financial knowledge.

Wow! What an excellent book!
Wow! This book is incredibly well written.
I have never read such a good instructive book on a complex subject before.
Comprehensive for all levels. It is so hard to get lost in the teachings which they give examples of real day life to what they discuss; ie: the companies you use to by getting ready for work in the morning (probably; Colgate Palm Olive)
They take you through every aspect you need to know from a-z.
After reading this, you'll confident to ride the stock market, or at lease watch the Finance Channel in the mornings - some thing they recommend.
Read this book and submerse yourself in pure financial stocks, shares and hostile takeovers. It is the best combination they suggest to becoming a savvy stock person.
Watching and reading stock market material is a subject they cover in being able to understand what it means, how it affects you as an investor and how it can effect other companies. Highly Recommended!

Investors equipment
Inside is important information on Investing in the markets. Must have for all Bill O Neil fans.

Good Overview
This book is an excellent overview of the financial markets and how they operate. This is for the novice who wants to get a general idea of how the financial markets operate.

What a fun read!
I enjoyed this fun story, and I thought the location was wonderful. It was great to get out of the big city. I also thought Pipers vocation was interesting, but imagine being allergic to chocolate! Stephanie Bond never disappoints, excellent writing and characters.

Great, funny romance
When wealthy restaurateur Ian Bentley's girlfriend proposes to him and gives him an engagement ring, he quickly heads to Mudville, Mississippi to personally work with Blythe Industries food scientists to develop a signature dessert for one of his new coffeehouse chain.

Piper Shephard is the chief food scientist for Blythe Industries in Mudville, Mississippi, population 1,200. Piper is responsible for creating the deserts that Blythe sells to restaurants around the country. Piper's job is somewhat hazardous because she's allergic to chocolate. Piper has been a bridesmaid so many times she could open her own bridal boutique with her bridesmaid dresses. When she learns that she is the last single girl of the 25 girls in her sorority, Piper realizes it's time to get serious about finding a man for herself, even hypochondriac Tillie has gone to hospital so many times she's bagged herself a rich doctor. When Piper discovers a guide on how to catch a husband among a box of items her Grandmother gave her, she decides to follow the book's advice, after all, it worked for Gran. Although the selection of eligible males in Mudville is somewhat slim, Piper is determined to stay in town so she can be close to her Grandmother. In fact, if Piper comes up with a desert good enough to get Ian Bentley to sign a contract, she will earn a large enough bonus to put a down payment on Gran's house.

Piper's attempts at attracting a man go hilariously wrong from the moment she begins. From the moment Ian leans over Piper when she's lying in a mud puddle, he's immediately smitten. The sparks fly between Ian and Piper but Piper is determined to stay away from Ian because of the ring on his finger.

This is a very funny book with charming, funny characters. I especially like Piper's neighbor; he's a hoot.

Sinfully Delicious!
Stephanie Bond is a master of comedy, but in this book, she mixes her rare talent for "funny" with some of the hottest sexuality and quirkiest characters seen in Temptation to date. You can't help but love a heroine who willingly risks an allergic reaction to chocolate in the name of sensual delights! I can't wait for her next one!

Hayre is lucid and informative! The Best Prepayment book
As other reviewers have mentioned this is a must for anyone involved with MBS ABS markets. Outstanding discussions on prepayment. Very detailed analysis of MBS ABS structures and related processes. Not much material related to interest rate derviatives.

An Essential Guide Plus Another
A fine guide book for the asset-backed and mortgage-backed securities markets from the original dominating force: Salomon Brothers (now Salomon Smith Barney). This comprehensive volume is an essential reference for asset backed securities and mortgage backed securities, albeit it is somewhat U.S. centric.

"Collateralized Debt Obligations and Structured Finance" by Janet Tavakoli completes and updates the essential structured finance collection. Tavakoli discusses synthetics which use credit derivatives techology and compares them to cash deals. She also exposes weaknesses in the ratings and in the structural elements that investors and structurers can correct, or at least negotiate value. She also talks about the risks of fraud, inadequate asset due diligence, and inadequate documentation & structural protections.

Clearly the best!
A clear and detailed book, written by the No. 1 expert in MBS from, Salomon Smith Barney, the best MBS underwriting and trading firm on Wall Street. A must for all people working with MBS.

Great book on winning in business and life (and racing)!
Bobby Unser was a very successful race car driver. This book shows that he always is a successful business man. Not being a racing fan, I wasn't too excited at first, but I enjoy reading motivational and self-improvement books, so I thought I'd check it out. Although I wouldn't say it turned me into a racing fan, I got to appreciate the scientific and sporting aspects of racing.

The advice given, although not earth-shattering, is both true and effective. For example, he talks about the desire to succeed and how this is a necessary "fuel" for winning. Many other self-development authors speak about this much as well. It is not anything new. However, He gives vivid examples from his racing career and from other anecdotes of friends and acquaintances. These examples are well-chosen because they are inspiring.

This is similar to other sections of his book. Bobby Unser seems to be very principle oriented as well as a man of integrity. He talk about instances where he could have turned his back on a commitment for monetary gain or to get on a better racing team (he made it seem like it was a somewhat common occurance in auto racing), but he stayed true to his commitment and it ended benefiting him in the end. This is refreshing considering some of the stereotypes of big business today where the search for a dollar seems to be the guiding principle sometimes.

I highly recommend this book. Even though it has a lot of auto racing stories, Unser tells them in a way that non-fans would really enjoy them and get motivation from their example.

Desire fuels the fire...
...and visions are meant to be shared.

Bobby's translation of what it takes to move from leading a race into the winner's circle to leading in business is an analogy well made in this book, particularly for all racing fans who find themselves wanting to gain a winning edge in life.

Paul Pease parlays Bobby Unser's winning focus in driving to be first for the checkered flag into a shared vision for his readers of what it takes to succeed in business. Bobby's lessons learned on the track and in between race days made him a part of one of America's most winning race families in a sport that has literally killed many who took on its challenges.

Bobby's experience in the business of racing and in the business of business in his twenty years of retirement, make him an excellent teacher of valuable lessons for the lay reader. The examples of lessons learned from his years of racing provide an entertaining and enlightening background for the reader to gain perspective on each message Bobby has to offer.

Bobby is clearly a monumental character both on the track and off. Being a willing teacher of what it takes to make a difference in business as in life makes this book very satisfying to the finish.

Unser takes the checkered flag, again!
I found Bobby's book to be not only a fun read, but also packed with great motivational tips. Applying the tips to racing really hit home and was great reinforcement. It was nice to read about someone who actually practices what they preach, and can then explain it so that others can benefit.

Humorous and delightful, a very fast read
The book was wonderful, but the ending was a little tame. The nickname "Pinky" was cute. I just wish there was more conflict to be resolved at the end.

Very enjoyable
This was the very first harlequin temptation I have ever read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Janine meets Derek when she sets out to seduce her fiance the day of his bachelor party. She slips into his room but instead encounters his best man, Derek. Derek and Janine are forced to stay together in the same room for several days as the hotel has been quarantined. If you're thinking that she shouldn't get involved with her intendeds best man and maybe best friend, don't... this man is only attending because his brother Jack, the grooms real best man has disappeared and he feels it only right to step in. The book is a fun fast read with no boring parts and a great ending. I cannot wait to read Jack's own story, 'It Takes a Rebel'

A fabulous, fast paced read!
Stephanie Bond is a talented writer who just gets better and better with each book. About Last Night is a fabulous, fast paced read with stupendous characterization and sizzling sexual tension with plenty of those laugh out loud moments that will have people looking at you like you're nuts. You're not though. Just show them what you're reading and tell them to get their own copy. They, and you, won't be disappointed!

The Black Panthers Speak

A Good Introduction
Knowing absolutely nothing about the Black Panthers I picked up this collection one day and read nearly straight through it. I came away with what I think is a fairly good idea of the goals of the Black Panther Party, not the same one I had generally heard or been taught growing up. Instead of them being the black racists many tend to think they are, what would be the equal opposite of the KKK (who, versus the Panthers' few years of existence, have been operating for more than 100 years), I learned that they could be more adequately labeled as classists, in the Marxist-Lenin tradition. As Eldridge Cleaver, one-time minister of information for the Black Panther Party, "You speak of an 'undying love' for black people. An undying love for black people that denies the humanity of other people is doomed. It was an undying love of white people for each other which led them to deny the humanity of colored people and which has stripped white people of humanity itself." I don't see a lot of "hating whitey" there, as Horowitz and other conservatives would have you believe, but more of a gelling together of the dregs of humanity in an attempt to alter its condition, the stance that Malcolm X eventually evolved to, and, later, the Panthers.

Perhaps we as humanity have come a ways, maybe thanks to them, since the Panthers first took up arms, defying the police to beat, shoot or incarcerate them. I say this because eight years ago a similar movement began in the southern highlands of Mexico, another marginalized group taking up arms in order to say,"Take notice, we're not taking it anymore." Instead of being branded thugs and criminals, the Zapatistas captured the hearts and minds of the world and continue their quest for equal rights and protection under the law.

According to their own writings (the real beauty of this book), these guys are not the black KKK or black neo-nazis, contrary to some opinion.

I found the writings of Eldridge Cleaver, a one-time candidate for president, to be some of my favorite.

I'll close with a citation from Julian Bond, which I think sums up what the Black Panther Party was really about: "What the Panthers do more than anything else is they set a standard that young black people particularly want to measure up to...It's a standard of aggressiveness, of militance, of just plain forcefulness, the sort of standard we haven't had in the past. Our idols have been Dr. King who, for all his beauty as a man, was not an aggressive man." Even Dr. King began to take a more aggressive approach before he was gunned down. It's not hate or intimidation, but standing up for oneself as a man.

I recommend complementary readings of the Autobiography of Malcolm X and the Wretched of the Earth.

A Powerful Book
this Book should Bring People Together. The Black Panthers wanted a Better Today.still to this day we are facing the same Problems of which they spoke on 30 years back.no misguided words here their own words.a must Read for all to Better understanding Voices of Hope&a Better Tommorow for all future Generations.

A true synopsis of the Panthers, that should be read by ALL
The Black Panthers Speak is the BEST book out for Americans who want to know what the Panthers stood for. Nobody's interpretation of what the Panthers were about, but only the speeches, letters, and court transcripts of Black Panther members. This book should be read by Americans of ALL ethnicities. Use it to understand that the Black Panthers were a party for ALL people in the struggle for freedom.

The Bond Market: Trading and Risk Management
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill Trade (01 October, 1992)
Authors: Christina I. Ray and Chistina I. Ray
Amazon base price: $75.00
Used price: $45.00

Useful and realistic
Book is great for those who want to know how bond trading really works, especially for those just starting out. Good for both salespeople and traders. However, the book is a decade old and has little on ETS and other recent developments. It also has many, many errors which are irritating, thus the 4/5. I should hope that these points are addressed in a second edition. It is otherwise well-written.

Excellent work - the best book to understand bond concepts
Ms.Ray focuses on providing a clear conceptual framework for understanding fixed income concepts. The approach is highly intuitive and reader-friendly. A must for anyone trying to get to grips with the concepts of duration, BPV, vols, forwards, etc....

An indispensable tool to a fixed income trader or broker
The Bond Market, by Christina Ray was one of the first books I read about fixed income securities that really explained how trading really is in the real world. I am happy to find another copy on ADC. This was used as a text in a class in Grad. school and I lost the book. Highly recommended.
