Excellent commentary on "good vs. evil."
The characters and plot are well thought out and there are no loose ends in this book. Not only is this book an intelligent commentary about religion and faith, but it tells a great story. This author is one to watch for...Am eagerly awaiting the author's next book.

A good summer read!
This book has a really unique structure for a fantasy book. A full cast of richly developed, memorably named characters keeps the story completely engrossing. An underlying subplot promises more good things to come from this author.

Definitely one of the all time best!
How many ways can you say 'fantastic!'?. Triple it for this diamond among all the garbage being published these days (and promoted by people who should be ashamed). Incredible characters living an incredible, soul-feeding adventure that you never want to end. This author should be declared a national treasure

Excellent
i had to write a paper for a geography class and figured why not do it on yugoslavia. while researching, i came across this book, and thought it was a marvelous read. it is a fascinating look at the decline of yugoslavia from Tito, who ran the country remarkably well and who had a miraculously peaceful tenure as "Emperor." then Milosevic showed up and [messed] it all up. the thing i find very excellent about this book is that it describes very well how milosevic got that power. he used nationalism to his advantage to get the serbs behind him. this nationalism lead to the bloody split-up of croatia, slovenia, bosnia-herzegovina, macedonia, and finally kosovo. this book shows one of the best (or worst, depending on how you look at it) examples of nationalism and the effects of nationalism. it is especially good to observe what happened to Milosevic in light of recent events throughout europe, with the hard-right gaining popularity, in such places as Romania, Hungary, and even in more tolerant France and the Netherlands. it is a worthwhile read to observe similarities between what milosevic said and did and what these new right-wing leaders are saying and doing.

Superb account of Yugoslavia's destruction by outside forces
This is an excellent book by a Professor of Political Science at Simon Fraser University, British Columbia, Canada. 'International History Review' said of the first edition that it was "far superior in its factual coverage and balance to its various competitors in the field. .. He has told the story as completely and as impartially as we are liable to get." Cohen gives a brief history of Yugoslavia in the first chapter. The rest of the book gives a detailed account of Yugoslavia's breakup and the war.

Yugoslavia existed as a state from 1918 to 1991. Under Tito it had a devolved and federal constitution. This gave parity representation to each of the six republics in the Yugoslav federation, even though Serbia was by far the biggest. Tito selected people for jobs by 'ethnic arithmetic' and rotated top officials annually. But these policies signally failed to unify Yugoslavia. The constitution encouraged those who wanted to split the country. They had a two-track strategy. They aimed to move from federation to confederation as a step towards independence; at the same time they formed separate institutions designed for complete independence.

Outside forces seized on these internal failings. In January 1991 the US and German Ambassadors pressed the Yugoslav National Army not to intervene to keep Croatia in Yugoslavia. In early 1991 Germany and other countries sold arms to Croatia and Slovenia. On 25 June 1991 Croatia and Slovenia unilaterally declared their independence. The Croats were desperate for foreign intervention: "The Tudjman government believed that immediate internationalization of the Yugoslav crisis was absolutely crucial."

When the Yugoslav Government deployed the National Army to hold the country together, the EC secretly threatened to cut off all aid to Yugoslavia. On 4 October 1991, the opening day of the EC Conference, its chairman Lord Carrington presented an agenda "premised on the assumption that Yugoslavia no longer existed." The EC announced that all the Yugoslav republics "are sovereign and independent with international identity". As Cohen wrote, "the EC had apparently made a political decision to dismember the Yugoslav federation." Hurd warned in December 1991 that recognising Croatia and Slovenia would escalate the war. Carrington warned that recognition would weaken diplomatic efforts to achieve a ceasefire and a settlement, and would also spread the war to Bosnia. Despite, or because of, all these good reasons, the EC, including Britain, recognised Croatia and Slovenia in January. The UN did too, despite its "internal divisions about the propriety of intervention in a sovereign state's domestic disputes."

The war did spread to Bosnia. In July 1991 the Moslem Bosnian Organization tried to negotiate a Moslem-Serb accord to prevent war in Bosnia and to preserve Bosnia's territorial integrity. Karadzic accepted this for the Bosnian Serbs, but Izetbegovic, the leader of the Bosnian Muslims, rejected it. Izetbegovic is a member of the fundamentalist 'Fida'iyane Islam', which wants to turn Bosnia into an Islamic Republic, although Muslims are only a third of the population. Bosnia's Prime Minister Haris Silajdzic tried to justify the composition of his government by saying "It is a fact that Moslems make up 99% of the Bosnian defense forces so it is natural that they form the government." In so doing he gave the lie to the nonsense that Bosnia is some form of multicultural democracy. These armed forces have been "strengthened with thousands of volunteers from various Islamic countries" and by illegal arms shipments, often through Slovenia, especially from Iran, Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

In his 1970 Islamic Declaration, which he reprinted in 1990, Izetbegovic wrote, "The Islamic movement must and can take power not only to destroy the non-Islamic power but to build up a new Islamic one." Cohen noted "the more militant and religiously nationalistic majority in the party led by Alija Izetbegovic (who had spent eight years in jail under the communists for his Islamic fundamentalist beliefs)." Cohen analysed "the role of traditional religions in generating ethnic conflicts" in Yugoslavia.

Again, in February 1992 Izetbegovic sabotaged the Lisbon Agreement for Moslem-Serb-Croat power-sharing. He "later conceded that Bosnia might have avoided a violent war if it had stayed together with Serbia and Montenegro in a reconfigured Yugoslavia." In early 1992 his dash for Bosnian independence was "prompted by the opportunity for quick recognition by the EC." Even the US Ambassador to Yugoslavia called his decision 'disastrous'. Cohen pointed out that "the lack of a political settlement among the major ethnic groups within Bosnia-Herzegovina actually justified postponing recognition of that republic as another new state in April 1992." But the EC and the UN went ahead with recognition. In the autumn of 1993 Bosnian Moslem government forces killed "thousands of civilian Croats in central Bosnia".

The United States has throughout the war campaigned for US intervention. As Cohen pointed out, it used hyperbolic calls of genocide to try to justify intervention. It has vilified the Serbs and whitewashed the Bosnian Moslems and the Croats. To defeat the Serbs, "the United States, though not ostensibly taking sides in the war, had effectively engineered the Moslem-Croat agreement." Cohen showed how "behind the scenes, Washington was gradually expanding its military support for the Moslems and Croats". Clinton approved the initiative of a group of former US military officers to assist Croatia's armed forces.

Cohen finished by writing hopefully, "The imperatives of economic survival and reconstruction, as well as geographic proximity and other earlier interdependencies, suggested that such cooperation would eventually resume despite the recent episodes of terrible, ethnic, religious, and political violence." But there is no chance of this vital peaceful reconstruction happening with 60,000 foreign troops in the country. Their presence will prolong the war in Yugoslavia, and also runs a high risk of spreading it to other countries. It will certainly worsen the tension between the NATO powers and Russia. Bulgaria and Greece will not appreciate the presence of so many NATO troops so near to them.

I absolutely NEED this book!!!
Yes!!! I MUST have it!!! I checked it out from the library years ago and I LOVED it!!! Thank goodness it's still available!!! I will buy it SOON!!!

Thank you Dorothy for such a GREAT book!!!

Can you tell that I am CRAZY (!!!) about this book?

Buy this book for great ideas!
Dorthy Bond has compiled a huge collection of embroidery stitches she's seen used in crazy quilts. She assumes you can learn how to do the stitches from other sources, although she provides a simple drawing of the steps for each basic stitch. The joy of this book is the wealth of combinations of those basic stitches. No other book on crazy quilt embroidery has offered me the same trigger to creativity that this book provides. It is spiral bound, ensuring that it will lie flat while you work from it. A great collection at a truly bargain price.

Excellent Crazy Quilter's Stitch Resource!
Crazy Quilt Stitches" is a comprehensive survey of stitch combinations for crazy quilt embellishment. The easy-to-lay-flat spiral binding is a plus for convenience. A beginner might need to supplement their knowledge on how to execute the basic stitches, but from there you have an excellent inspiration for the variations in stitches so prized by the Victorian crazy quilters. This is a no-nonsense book that is a must for your needlework library.

A Wonderful Book!
A literary treasure! My favorite story, "Caroline's Prince" by Inez Hollander Lake was beautifully written by a creative storyteller. The incredible stories in this book are funny, heartwarming, and endearing.

Mothers & Daughters Book Serves Cup of Love
Do you have an aversion to laughing and crying in a public place?
If so, seek a secluded spot to pore over the unforgettable stories editor Colleen Sell collected for A CUP OF COMFORT FOR MOTHERS & DAUGHTERS.
You can't prevent it. Your own heart becomes the setting for this uplifting anthology that celebrates the cherished bond between mothers and daughters.
Excellent story-teller Kristl Franklin reveals an innate secret shared between mother and daughter in "The Demise of Josephine." Humor softens a sad tale: "My kitchen looked like a band of monkeys had used it for survival training."
"Leaving" by Ramona John will also make you smile. "The first time I left my mother, I was five years old."....."I'm running away," I announced.
Lynn Ruth Miller, in "A Mother Knows," says a mother knows everything about you. "You can tell a true mother by the penetrating look in her eye."
In "Fashion Amnesia" Karen Favo Walsh, frustrated by failure buying clothes for her daughter, writes, "I am clueless about teenage fashion. It's a genetic flaw....."
Even if you skip about to find favorite stories sprinkled among the pages of this treasury, inevitably you'll read them all. This fourth installment in the Cup of Comfort series keeps its promise to touch, heal and inspire the reader.

Another Great Cup of Comfort
What can I say? The Cup of Comfort books bring a smile to my face and this new Mother and Daughters version is no exception. "To Love a Stranger" by Sande Smith tells of a daughter who is now playing the role of mother as she nurses her mother through Alzheimer's. Nancy Massand's "Time Out" is a wake-up about slowing down and smelling the roses with those you love and how a little girl's wisdom saves the day. I thoroughly enjoy "Tea for Two" by R. M Conner reunites a mother and teen-age daughter at odds. This is another heartwarming book. You just cannot get enough of these stories. Why not pick up a copy to give to your mother or daughter for Mother's Day?

Electron Flow in Organic Chemistry

A Terrific Organic Text and Reference
Dr. Paul Scudder was my undergraduate organic chemistry teacher at New College of USF in Sarasota, FL. His book continues to sit on my shelf even now, as I am working on my Ph.D. in synthetic medicinal chemistry. We used it along with Dr. Seyhan Ege's undergraduate Organic Chemistry text, which is a traditional "white-pages" type of organic text. His class was the best class I took in my entire four years of college, and I cannot recommend his book highly enough to anyone who truly wishes to gain a fundamental understanding of organic chemistry principles. It was a tremendous help to me both in college, as well as in grad school while preparing for my qualifiers. The book is written at a level that is accessible to college underclassmen, but it is also useful for upper level undergraduate and graduate students who would like to review important organic chemistry concepts or see the concepts presented in a new, easy to assimilate, way. His 3-D reaction coordinate graphs, pathway decision cubes, and pathway classification schemes are some of the strongest points of the book. He also presents some advanced theories such as HOMO-LUMO and HSAB theories that are often not really taught to undergraduates, and these are extremely well-done and easy to follow. Dr. Scudder has great passion for his subject, and that is apparent in his book.

The few minor and petty problems with the book that I can think of are that he assumes that the reader has some previous organic background knowledge, the writing is sometimes choppy and jumps around, and the graphics are not state-of-the-art, as he did them himself. Chapter 2, on thermodynamics and kinetics, is especially difficult to follow for someone who has no knowledge about these subjects.

indispensable tool for organic chemistry students-all levels
A superb, well-organized classification of organic chemistry for practitioners at all levels. Clear, concise, with a large number of charts and graphs, some of which are indispensable. A handbook which boils down most of what you need to know to understand a wide spectrum of organic reaction mechanisms. Reminds me of the Washington University medical manual series, which filtered all the medical knowledge of each subspecialty essential for daily use into a single pocket handbook.

A revolutionary way of approaching organic chemistry
Paul Scudder approaches organic chemistry from a completely different angle. While most organic books stress that a student memorize hundreds of seemingly unrelated reactions, this text is different. It teaches you the tools to classify organic reactions and solve them logically. This book and its method should be the standard for how organic chemistry is taught.

Mandatory Reading
This book should be mandatory reading for any course about the civil rights or black arts movement of the 60s. Freedomways magazine, edited by Esther Cooper Jackson, chronicled the entire civil rights and black arts movement with insightful analysis, critique and articles. Includes work by W.E.B. DuBois, James Baldwin, Alice Walker, Angela Davis, and other legendary Black poets and writers who first started out by publishing in the magazine. Also, it provides interesting research on the struggle for social, civil, and political rights here in this country and abroad. A must read as many of the articles within the "Reader" have never been published elsewhere.

very important Book
this is a Great book that covers so much Historical important information.a wide view of knowledge of the struggle all here.a must have.books like this cover so much.

Important addition to personal and academic Black studies.
From 1961 to 1986, Freedomways published the words and thoughts of the leaders of the freedom movement; yet few modern Americans have heard of the publication. Esther Cooper Jackson and Constance Pohl's Freedomways Reader gathers key writings from the pages of the various Freedomways booklets, charting the struggles for racial equality and providing an oral history of black freedom struggles, from reports of the Freedom Riders to short stories.

One more step towards Feminine Freedom!
GOG is a well-written book that highlights taboo subject matter about the relation to spiritual matriarchy and female domination. Although it is not entirely about FemDom, it does associate male fantasy and why men have these far-out sexual fetishes. I am involved in a large Female Supremacy group and thoroughly enjoy the writings from both of these authors. Dianna Vesta- FemSupreme

A book for the New Millennium
I would recommend this book to men who are seeking answers and explanation for the interest in Goddess religion and the return of the Great Mother to the scene. As patriarchy crumbles and falls away, people are looking for direction and a path. Illustrated Tarot is included and a discussion of submissive males coming out of the closet adds a twist to the belief in the inevitability of male dominance and a father God creator now being questioned by many men. An interesting read that will spark interest in knowing more about Goddess religion past and present.

Gospel of the Goddess is for the New Millennium
The Gospel is a book for women and men looking for new direction. As the 6,000-year patriarchy crumbles, people must learn a new way of being and coping with the rise of the women. Now we want to worship a Goddess, restore the Earth for future generations, create new myths that once again center on SHE as creatrix of all. Our Mother is back, and we want to know how to welcome Her home again. Especially recommended for men.

Five-Book Set
If You Take A ... books are some of the best children's stories written. The whole series is great and this set is a great value! I highly recommend it for children age 3-6.

Very cute
I bought this series for my nephew, who is 18 mos. old. He loves to be read to. There is enough detail in the pictures that there is plenty to point out. I can ask him "Where's the mouse" and he can look for it in the picture and point it out. And the artwork is cute. The stories are also cute and the sentences are simple enough that once my nephew does begin to read he'll be able to read these easily enough. A bit of subtle humor though, on one page the mouse writes words on the chalk board and one of them is versimilitude...just wait until my nephew want's to know what that word means!

Great Collection of Books...
... at a great price. My boys love the books and I love that they love them.

The Incredible World of 007: An Authorized Celebration of James Bond
Published in Paperback by Citadel Trade (November, 1995)
Authors: Lee Pfeiffer, Philip Lisa, Lisa Philip, and Albert Broccoli
Amazon base price: $19.95
Used price: $5.75
Average review score:

Philip Lisa Delivers the Best Book on James Bond
Philip Lisa is the driving force behind this book. He is a man of extensive knowledge on the subject of James Bond and his ability to discuss this subject is boundless. This book covers each of the Broccoli / United Artists James Bond films. These are the official films. The book gives objective information on each title written with editorial doses of interest which maintains a consistency of perspective from cover to cover. There are no favorites in the traditional sense. The authors know very well that no filmmaker or group of filmmakers ever intentionally makes an inferior motion picture. It is all a matter of how well the filmmakers combine their efforts and produce a finished product. The focus of the book is the filmmaking, not hype or glamour. The Bond films have always maintained a high ideal of production standards and this book examines that process. Besides the filmmaking this book also examines the James Bond phenomena from product merchandising (including books, toys, music, videos, games, etc.) to the cultural impact of Ian Fleming's hero. It even covers such offshoots such as the animated TV series "James Bond Jr." The book also contains key interviews with members of the acting and production crews. It is also profusely and beautifully illustrated with many colour photographs. I highly recommend this book. And take from me, Philip Lisa is more than just a contributor on this publication.

The Ultimate Book on the James Bond Film Series and Beyond
This is the best book concentrating on the James Bond films series and the phenomena it created. Written with great knowledge, gusto and inspiration this an excellent work on the subject. What is very good about this informative work is that the two authors never editorialize in a derogatory manner. If something in a film did not work, they give us their interpretation of what went wrong and suggest other possibilities. There are many unique photographs illustrating this book. It also covers James Bond Collecting. It is well written and I highly recommend it. My copy goes up to "Licence to Kill" but I do know that another printing followed which included "GoldenEye."

Lee Pfeiffer does it again
For all the James Bond fans, anything which is more intriguing is welcome at any time. From the time in 1957 when the first movie of James Bond came alive on the small screen to the first feature movie (Dr. No.) in 1962, every single item has been a treasure for a James Bond fan. It is really surprising that this book by Lee Pfeiffer has been missed out in author reviews. Considering the wealth of information that it offers about the celebrated facts of James Bond - the masterly creation of Ian Fleming and brought alive by Cubby Broccoli is a collectors dream. Having this book in the already thick treasure trove of Bond books, movies, cassettes, videos and trivia collection has been a matter of pride for me.

I wish that other Bond fans like me come forward and acknowledge the excellent documentation. As a sign off I would like to say that the book can be described in one word " INCREDIBLE"
