This is a good book
Fragments that remain is a good book. I recommend it to anyone... There is racism and discrimination, and favortisim... But each of them got what they deserved... Some good and some bad...

Harry's Review
Fragments That Remain is one of the most pleasurable books I have ever read. Steven Corbin does an incredible job fleshing out his characters. The characters come alive with each page. I was able to identify with Corbins's characters due to the richness of his writing. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning the intricacies involved in a gay interracial relationship. It's an eye opener.

Iranian Gnosis
This brilliant book is only for esoterica aficionados. Corbin, the foremost French (and, in all probability, world) authority on Sufism and Shiite esotericism, discusses in his familiar baroque and stream-of-consciousness erudite style three Iranian sages-mystics: Suhrawardi (the martyred founder of Ishraqi/Illuminative school of Islamic esotericism ), Kubra (the founder of an influential Sufi order) and Simnani (an orthodox Sufi master who left behind a voluminous corpus of esoteric writings). What do these men have in common ?

Well- at least, two things:

1. they all developed variants of highly imaginative multilayered metaphysics (especially Suhrawardi) and set up "theoretical" framework which was later used to interpret spectacular (one might blasphemically say "Cecildemillean" or LSD-like) visionary experiences.

2.another common "trademark" is the Man of Light (hence the title of the book), equated with Arch)Angel Gabriel, or Supreme Spirit (Ar-Ruh al-Qudsi), or perfect nature: in short, everyone's "True" or Higher Self.

One might add that the three mystics have been dualists (therefore, alien to Ibn Arabi's monist Wahdat-al-Wujud doctrine), and that the latter duo ( in sharp contrast to extravagant and highly original visionary genius of mutilated Suhrawardi ) remained impeccably orthodox. Their originality lies in development of Islamic version of esoteric physiology: latifa, the supposed organs/subtle centers of suprasensory perception, are essentially Kubra's and Simnani's spiritual legacy.
On balance, Corbin's "The Man of Light" is an intellectual and spiritual joyride and I highly recommend it.

A great scholarly work
A great book for anyone who wants to gain an in depth understanding of Islamic mysticism. There are many books out there on Sufism, but Corbin's books are most" scholarly". It is obvious that the author spent a life time researching this topic and learning it from those who know sufism well. Same can not be said about many other so called scholars who seem to write books on a daily basis and their research scope is no more than a few trips to the local library. No wonder there are so many books being published and yet so few of them are really worth reading. Many of them leave their reader feeling cheated. I am afraid that Scholars like Corbin should be classified under endangered species.

Speck addresses tough issues with readability
Speck's gem of a book, Sex: It's Worth Waiting For, is pure gospel. Asserting that Jesus is the answer, Speck masterfully and tastefully weaves his way through the tangled web of teenage sexuality. He cuts no corners and leaves few stones unturned. Especially appreciated is the frank and useful chapter on masturbation. Although somewhat dated, the book is a helpful tool and an easy yet spiritually challenging book for the struggling teen.

A must read for teenagers and youth workers!
Interesting.Informative. Easy to read. Teenagers will enjoy. I am using this book as a basis for teenage sex education class as well as the videotapes. Mr. Speck even suggests to teenageers that they write to him regarding their concerns. This is an excellent book.

An unbelievably inspiring book.
In these strange and dark times I wish more people would get their introduction to Shi'ism from Corbin, rather than the slew of "Understanding Islam" books out there. Though that will never happen, this book would really be the one to square the view between most Christians (the one's who have an inkling for Christian gnosis) and at least Shi'ites and Sufis. Certainly neither should have any trouble at all relating to each other's symbolic 'architecture' or 'geography'. More than anything, though, this book is an excellent introduction to the spaces described by Sacred Symbolism. It will invert your understanding of the space occupied by religious motifs in general - not by drawing them together in a vulgar display of "paralellomania" that is so popular today, but by advocating for the primacy of the atemporal geography that genuine Tradition can provide access to at it's deepest levels. The result is astonishing, perhaps singular, even for Corbin. It must be mentioned that the sword cuts two ways, and so sneering anti-Christians will really have to eat it for a second... for truly, what do we make of it when when Japanese Zen master Suzuki claims Swedenborg to be a "Western Buddha"? Come on now, you think Corbin would waste his time on anything but the REAL DEAL?

Very informative book
I always wondered if Swedenborg had any external influences on his esoteric approach towards the Holy Book, and this book does shed some light on that. As a student of religious studies and as a Christian, I have to come to respect the Shia esoteric aspect of moslem religion.

A Bridge Between Indigenous People and Environmentalists
Enmeshed in the high-tech, hyperspeed, information-age economy, it's easy for most of us to forget that we simply cannot survive without clean air, clean water, clean soil. It's also easy to shrug off your concerns by thinking, "What can one person do?" Corbin Harney, a spiritual leader of the Western Shoshone tribe, demonstrates what one person with a vision can do. "The Way It Is" is a wake-up call. It lays out Harney's vision of the law of life, the law that native peoples have always understood--that we have only one planet to take care of.

Since 1985, Harney and other Western Shoshone people have been fighting against nuclear weapons testing in Nevada. (The Nevada Test Site occupies land that the federal government illegally seized from the tribe in the 1940s to use for weapons testing.) The elderly Harney has totally dedicated himself to healing people, healing the land, and--most important--sharing his vision about the damage that nuclear pollution and other environmental abuses are doing to the land, air, and water. In down-to-earth, direct language, Mr. Harney lays out his beliefs and speaks directly to your heart.

His vision about water is alarming: "One time...when I was praying for the water, the water said to me, 'I'm going to look like water, but pretty soon nobody's going to use me.' Now, wherever I go, the people talk about their water being contaminated, and they can't use it."

Harney leads ceremonies and healing rituals on tribal land in Nevada and travels the Earth to talk to whomever will listen, telling them to pray for the Earth.

Over the years, he has achieved the stature of a moral authority for the Earth. He says, "I pray in the mornings for the sun, the air, the water, plants, the animals, the rocks. Those prayers have been passed on down from way back for thousands of years, but we haven't been doing enough of these things, of taking care of things, and now we have to come back to it. We are going to have to start taking care of things again."

images of a dreamlike existence combined with harsh reality
What I liked about this book is its depth on a sad phenomenon in American agriculture. "Family Trees" gives a human voice to a way of life that is disappearing in the South and in the whole of the United States. Mike Corbin's photos capture the sense of what small family farms are-- an existence of hard work, hope, love, and nature.
