I never new the spinal cord could be so exciting...I noticed this book among others and went to the library to take a look. Within no time I was hooked on spinal cord... I've always been interested in the ways the nervous system makes things move but I didn't realize how complicated the spinal cord is. It is too bad that I am near retirement or I'd surely switch from fishing to spinal cord research.

Useful edition for experienced neurosurgeonsThis book highlights the major areas of basic science research in which progress is currently being made in the battle against the problem of spinal cord injury. It presents important advances in developing effective intervention to promote functional recovery after spinal cord injury through studies on animal models. A number of important insights on human injured spinal cords are presented through an experimentally induced lesion model system. A particularly exciting set of experiments provides compelling evidence for spinal learning - the ability of the isolated cord to make adaptions to new environmental demands.

This One Has It AllBelieve it or not, I liked this book so much that after typing a long review on it once before, I accidently erased my review and I have now gone the extra mile in a very busy practice to write to you about this exceptional book. I have spent the last 6 months researching the literature on health promotion for my patients with Multiple Sclerosis. I am a member of a medical team developing a large scale 'health promoting behavior'(hpb) research and training center at a large university hospital. I wandered into the SCI literature and BEHOLD! All the months that I had spent teasing this aspect and then that apsect of hpb's were, for the most part, contained in this one very deceivingly simple book. Likewise, my explorations on how to create a program designed to maximize hpb's would have been immensely easier had I found this title first! I now use it to organize all the other information that I have found in other sources. The breadth of the material is neatly organized into numerous and powerfully informative tables and diagrams. I did not find a single topic relevant to the consumer and the healthcare professional uncovered. For it's purpose, this dynamo of a book is "just what the doctor ordered." My only problem now is HOW DO I ORGANIZE OUR PROGRAM WITHOUT COMPLETELY PLAGIARIZING INDIRA S. LANIG!

A highly recommended contribution to a national dialogueSociety At The Crossroads: Choosing The Right Road by economist Steven Cord is an informed and informative discussion of human morality for the twenty-first century. Arguing forcefully against the philosophy of "post-modern Ethical Relativism", Professor Cord champions the assertion of full equal rights and the importance of having confidence in moral decisions. A thought-provoking and profound account, Society At The Crossroads is a highly recommended contribution to a national dialogue on the philosophical underpinnings of contemporary social issues, ills, and concerns.

Finally a clear explanation of important back issuesI have been operated on twice on my back, and I wish this book was available years ago. Back surgery is a complicated process and it is difficult for a patient to look at a MRI image that the doctor is looking at, and even with explanations from the doctor, to understand. This book clearly and simply explains all surgical options, the pro's and con's and the risks involved with each. It also describes the likley hood of side effects. It also has sample images from MRI's, CT scans and X rays to show you a picture of the problems, with clear labeling. The key , I think, is that it helps you better undersatnd your problem and to communicate intelligently with the surgeon about your condition. I recommend to anyone who may may considering surgery!
