A book of courage.
Some teacher I had made us read so I picked up Ryan White : My Own Story I figured hey good book to just look at and daydream, well I started to read it before you know it I was reading it everyday. His story has changed my life forever as im sure the book has changed others Ryan shows the real meaning of courage and faith in this book hes not just a normal other AIDS patient, he a living miracle trust me this book will move you.

An uplifting story of love and courage
This is probably the best book I have ever read. Ryan was an incredibly strong boy who left his mark on the world. He will never be forgotten for his endless efforts to help people with AIDS and for all of the lives he's touched. Ryan accomplished more in his seventeen years of life than most people do in one hundred years. You will fall in love with Ryan and his family. Ryan loved life and he made every second count. While fighting his illness, he did everything possible to help other people with AIDS. Although short, Ryan led a very full life, one that he was very grateful for. Ryan was put on this earth for a reason and after reading this book, you'll soon realize why.

Great Book
I had to read this book for Reading Olympics. I didn't want to at first but when I began to read it, it was the best book ever I cried and laughed and felt bad for Ryan because of the way the people in Cocamo treated him. If you want to read a heart touching book you should read this book!

Chasing God is a spiritual adventure
Shirley Cunningham's deep journey into the bowels of life and connection with the transcendent is a rare memoir that serves as a guidebook to anyone searching for the divine. Her honesty, devotion to the highest good, and real-life struggles captivates and inspires. Her gentle literary touch moves the pages along effortlessly for the reader despite the messiness, joys, complexities, and challenges of a life lived to the fullest measure. It's a book that heals and lightens. I highly recommend this excellent read.

Chasing God
This book is interesting and inspiring for many reasons. Shirley Cunningham uses her literary talents to create a real page turner. Her journey into spiritual discovery has numerous twists and turns, that I found very intersting. This book conveys that through the ups and downs of life, God is ever-present and loves us very much. This highly personal book is a must have for anybody in search of the divine!

A Warm Read that Challenges and Nurtures
If you are looking for a book that shows the tensions between the real and the "expected," between the inner and the outer, between "chasing God" and "being chased" by God and then resolves those tensions by giving a spiritual vision of wholeness that embraces the paradoxes, then this book is for you. That is not to suggest that Chasing God is a metaphysical or philosophically dense treatise on life. The way the author writes about her relationships with family and friends; about the birth of her son; about the growing romance with her second husband ring so true that the reader experiences the relationship as well. Chasing God is a journey through one woman's life. It is a book written with clarity and beauty.

Cunningham is particularly strong when she describes places. The reader is with her in her high school in Wisconsin, with her in the convent, with her in Spain, with her as she races to a doctor with her new friend Jerry who is suddenly and unexpectedly ill. Cunningham's reflections on being ill, herself, with cancer and her subsequent change in feeling about folks who are not fully well are worth the price of the book.

Likewise, this book is for those who are, at heart, artists
and for whom the daily responsibilities of life have squeezed the artist thin. Cunningham, through her own experience, challenges the reader to nurture the creative within and shows the connections between creativity, spirituality, and healing.

For many of us used to looking for reality "outside," the author of this book asserts not only that the really real is out there, but that the "real thing comes from inside" as well and challenges us to listen.

Write to the Point
This book may be the handiest and clearest book of tips on basic business writing I've read in a long time. The book's tips on writing clearly and for the reader of the office memo or e-mail are direct, short and to the point.

It doesn't waste words but it doesn't omit a lot of topics, either. For example, a memo writer is reminded to "write as you speak--if you speak clearly." Thousands, no, millions, of words have been devoted to this topic. This one sentence sums it up nicely.

Some may quibble with minor points in the book. For example, it advises readers not to capitalize the "The" in newspaper names because some papers use a "the" and some don't. To my way of thinking (and training), that's a question easily resolved by finding out what the newspaper uses. But this is a tiny point.

I much prefer the authors' valuable and wide-ranging bits of information:

khan: lowercase this term, which is a title for a ruler, an official or an important person in India and some central Asian countries.

c.o.d.: Use c.o.d. with periods for all references. It stands for cash on delivery. Without periods, it could be confused with the word cod, as in fish.
saccharin/saccharine: Often misspelled. The first is a sugar substitute; the second means overly sweet.

And so on, touching on topics from A to Z, as billed. I highly recommend this book.

The Business Style Handbook
An invaluable tool. I just started back in the workplace after an absence of many years and this book put me right back on the business track. It even helped my son with the writing of his resume. Thanks for all the useful information.

The Greatest handbook
English is not my first language but I need to write clearly, quickly, and without errors to succeed in my job. This book is my secret weapon. It is well organized and easy to use. The A-Z section answers a lot of questions I have about language and the chapters on business writing contain good advice for writing more effectively.

Insight into why "We" wear hats!!! It's me all over!!!
I am called the "Hat Lady". I relate to the queens in the book. In fact, some of the ladies made comments that I found to be very profound, i.e, wearing a hat in a coffin. I wear hats and love them. Like the ladies, when I put on a hat I stand taller, walk with a strut, and feel I am invincible. It's something about a hat that seems to add to my stature. "Crowns" gives a lot of insight into why we look so good in hats. It's true it's all about attitude and self-esteem. I try to wear them at all times. "Crowns" is relative. I felt so good about myself after reading it. The queens really put hats in their proper perspective in relation to African-American women. I always get a compliment like, "Girl, you're wearing that hat" from one of my sisters and from strangers I hear, "That's a bad hat you got on." (Mostly males) Several times I saw myself in those. I smiled and shook my head at the comments. It is a story that needed to be told. I commend the author & photographer, for I found no fault with "Crowns". A good read.

A Must Have for Students of American History
This is THE book that friends will pick up FIRST from the top of your coffee table at home or at work.

Beautiful message, pictures and content.

Hooray for Hats !
The black and white photos are as expressive as the wonderful stories about how these charming ladies began their love affairs with hats. Each story is unique and also very much like the others. There is lots of unexpected humor. I have been inspired to continue wearing and buying more hats. Love the book. Thank you Mr. Cunningham and Mr. Marberry and all the ladies who shared their thoughts and their hats.

Perfect baking cookbook
Every recipe I have made from this book (over 30) has worked perfectly. The directions are impeccable. I've made cakes, cookies, pies, quick breads, yeast breads, frostings and sauces from this book. Each one has worked every time. The hot fudge sauce is spectacular as are the gingersnap cookies. When I bought this book several years ago, I knew how to make chocolate chip cookies; I was not an experienced baker. I followed Ms. Cunningham's master recipes to learn how to bake, and now I have a reputation as a great baker. You can't go wrong baking with Marion Cunningham as your guide.

Why look in any other book?!?
I bought this book at Costco many years ago and have used it constantly ever since. The recipes are good and the directions easy to follow. The variety of recipes is excellent. I have had many folks rave over the things I have baked from this book. The doggie cookies, the very last recipe in the book, are especially good! You will not be disappointed if you buy and use the Fannie Farmer baking Book. I know that Fannie herself would use it if she were still around!!!

Beginners & Experts - this is your book!
I love this baking book - it's the first I pull off the shelf when I want to bake anything from cookies to cakes to pies to breads. I first found this in a library and borrowed it to make an apple pie, my first. The instructions were fantastic, and I started with the recipe that made sense for me at that time - the basic apple pie recipe. Not only was it a great recipe to follow, but the pie turned out amazingly well and was a hit among the tasters. Once I mastered that recipe, I moved on to other recipes having gotten the basics in my back pocket.

I love the cake recipes too, especially Loni Kuhn's Devil's Food Cake recpie which is amazing every time - especially served warm!

This book would make a great wedding shower gift, especially combined with some basic baking tools. Sure to delight the recipient when received and even more when tested!

highly useful, practical approach to primary spelling
"Making Words" is an excellent book for first and second grade teachers who are looking for an effective, practical approach to teaching spelling skills. It presents a method for involving students in the process of identifying phonological units and patterns within words, and helps the student to become aware of similarities in words that can help in writing. Students physically manipulate letter cards to spell words of increasing length, then sort and classify the words they have spelled. It can be used in small group or whole class settings, and is fairly easy to manage. The book presents the sequence of steps in a typical lesson, a series of introductory lessons to teach the method to the students, and has a large number of words and word lists that can be the basis for lessons in your class. I used it the last half of the year in my first grade class, and it was very effective, providing a clearly understood framework for teaching spelling. Although I used the introductory lessons and some of the suggested word lists, I also found that it was easy to design my own lessons using the book's format. I highly recommend this book (and I've convinced the rest of my grade level to use it this next year.)

A must for primary teachers!
As a first grade teacher, I have used this book for the past 4 years. We begin using the lessons every January. My students love the activities and I see tremendous improvement in their spelling, reading, and writing after we begin using Making Words. You must try it!

Best spelling book!
This is the best spelling book I have seen. I am a homeschooling mom of 2 boys (9 & 8) and this is the easiest method and they enjoy it too!

Thrilling "Gaslight" story of actress's mysterious marriage
Kept me on my toes as the heroine goes from playing an endangered heroine to being one in "real life." Differences between "reel" and "real" make this an in depth character study. the heartache at the core is every disillusioned bride's story -- how love is lost, but the suspense is hair tingly and the depiction of small town life right up there with the author's "A Place in the Country." It did remind me of Hitchock movies; really a thrilling, serious read.

Classic suspense with new twists
Spooky and smart, this novel is even better than the last one by this author...Also shows entertaining can also be intelligent! No dumb-downs. Doesn't condescend to readers with its vivid picture of an terrified wife, who played movie heroines in distress, now up against her own husband. the real thing. Kept me guessing until the very satisfying end...Burning Midnight oil. Loved, loved, loved the Victorian and Contemporary mix as Juliana inhabits the old "Wedding Cake House' built for a bride whose marriage also became troubled...

A heroine like heroin, addictive, ecstatic
In this beautifully composed sonata on pain and fear, an actress, Juliana, attempts to differentiate between terror and rescue in her past films, and the startling realities of trying to persevere in a violent divorce...Fiercely intelligent and brilliantly described, this novel displays the author's gifts as she spins a gossamer crystalline web of connection between what women long for, and what they often receive. With one stunning, cinematic sequence after another, Juliana moves toward genuine and earned salvation.

Absolutely no pictures!
It does seem to have an awful lot of recipes crammed in there, but I was looking for a book with a bunch of curiosity-provoking, colorful pictures... something to make a guest say "hey, I want one of those!" It looks like a phone book inside-- lots of small writing, listing one drink after another.

Buy this Book
I had to write a review after reading the prior one of a man in search of a picture book. There are a plethora of [bad] picture drink books on the market. It is funny, he was looking for a common thing (a [bad] picture drink book) and he got the finest drink recipe book ever written. The author painstakingly alphabetized and reworked thousands of drinks. He threw out all the [bad stuff] and made a No [fooling] essential tool, that restaurants, bars, and liquor stores must carry (they all seem to). The book is unbiased (no liquor companies pushing their product) It lays flat so I can work and read at the same time. I own a 4th, 5th and a 6th edition and I await new editions. I have learned from them all....THE BARTENDER'S BLACK BOOK IS A 5 STAR BOOK.

Recommended from Behind the Bar
I'm a bartender and there is always one customer who comes along and orders a drink you dont know how to make. Behind the bar we keep several drink books, but this is the only one that actually gets used. Easy to read recipies, non-coded names for liquors, short, sweet, and to the point. Spiral binded so the book will not close while you are mixing. Contains the most variety of drinks I've seen from Vodka Collins for beginners (which most books don't have) through Long Islands all the way to a Mongolian Mother for the more adverse. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to shake, stir, or blend.
