Red Dust and Broadsides: A Joint Autobiography
Published in Hardcover by Univ. of Massachusetts Press (August, 1999)
Amazon base price: $60.00
Average review score:

Wasn't That a Time! After 55 years of intense and rabid anti-communism, most people can be excused for accepting the old cliches about American Communists: dour, unfeeling and fanatical in their devotion to Moscow's orders. This joint autobiography of Agnes (Sis) Cunningham and Gordon Frieson shows us that, instead, Communists tended to be pretty much like all of us. Driven by a desire to create a better America and repelled by the "everything's for sale" attitude of the two main political parties, they labored through poverty, blacklisting, lynch mobs and government sabotage towards that better America. And they did it all with a song on their lips and in their hearts. An excellent book for those who want to know more about a period when only the very brave questioned the government and the system we live under.

Excellent Account of Sumner Cunningham's lifeThis book details the Confederate Service of Sumner Cunningham. From his early service, POW life and his coming of age during the Battle of Franklin. I would encourage you to get this book. I would also suggest the book Company Aytch by Sam Watkins. Both are good reading about living and dying in the Army of Tennessee.

Right from the Hymnbook : How to Play Hymns & Gospel Songs
Published in Spiral-bound by Phyllis Cunningham (20 March, 2001)
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

Right From the HymnbookThe many hymn and gospel song arrangements alone are worth the price of this book. Then the author shows the reader how to develop their own arrangements. The sections on modulation and transposition are also excellent. Teachers will find it a great tool to use in showing their students how to expand the SATB notes in the hymnbook to accompany the singing of individuals or groups. I think it is an excellent book.

This book has an invaluable month by month to do list.We moved to Northeastern North Carolina four years ago from southern New York where we had successfully grown vegetables, roses and flowering shrubs and perennials for many years. Relocating to a new climate and different growing season was nearly an unsurmountable challenge until we purchased Stiffler's book. His month by month "to do" list plus gardening tips and procedures have helped us establish a most satisfactory year round garden. Stiffler categorizes shrubs and trees by level of maintenance required, soil conditions conducive to growth and also includes interesting historical and background information about individual varieties such as the history of the crape myrtle in the South. We have recommended this book to fellow gardeners as well and we all have found it an indispensable guide to gardening.

Sacred Sleep: Dreams & the Divine

Sacred Messages in the NightThis is an excellent book for those who wish to explore the realms of dreams. Scott writes with his usual ease and is easy to understand. This book is unlike the countless dream dictionaries which demand you follow their interpretation. It also gives you insight into the history of dreaming and its uses in history. I especially enjoyed the roles of dream interpreters in history and the ideas of the divine transmitting messages through our dreams. It can help you to better understand the very personal meanings behind your dreams. This book has also been recently republished under the title " Dreaming the Divine: Techniques for Sacred Sleep ". Then again, if you are a fan of Scott Cunningham, its worth having the originals in your collection.

The Sculler at Ease: What Makes Boats Go
Published in Hardcover by Frank Cunningham (June, 1993)
Amazon base price: $24.95
Average review score:

The Best on the subject that I have readCunningham's years of experience shine through the text. He covers the basics of sculling, including a section on "rigging" your shell, which alone is worth the price of the book . He writes with the same non-condescending tone that made him so successful as a coach for many years at Harvard. It is all here from an esoteric descripition of the shell to a very practical glossary of terms. I have been both a sweep oarsman and a sculler for over 50 years and this little book which can be read in an evening still sits on my desk, year round. It is so good, that I have committed much of it to memory. In one hundred and sixty two pages he makes a sport which takes as much concentration as a golfer and the stamina and balance of a ballerina available to anyone who will apply his lessons. I found the section in which he advises the sculler to scull with his eyes closed(!) on open water fascinating. (I have tried it and it did wonders for my balance.) This is definitely a 10. It belongs on your shelf and as a gift for anyone interested is sculling. It is also a great substitute for all those runners whose knees have worn out! Enjoy

Can't wait to go!Being a fan of sea kayaking off the coast of Maine, and having vacationed in Nova Scotia last summer and loving it, this book was a natural. There are 42 routes described, broken up into 5 sections of the province. I was particularly interested in the South Shore, from Halifax down to Yarmouth, not one of the most glamerous portions of Nova Scotia. The guides spell out the distance, put in and take out points, weather and sea conditions which you need to be cautious of, and some of the high spots of each route. As the Island is subject to some very extreem weather and sea conditions, it is strong on cautions. It also provides map and book references. It gave me everything that I would need to be able to plan a trip there. Now, to find the time.

The Sex Book a Refreshing Tome on Sexual HealthBeing a doctor and a teen counselor, I found The Sex Book to be extremely helpful when educating young adults. The tone is measured without being preachy, and the topics exhaustive. Whether a teenager is already having sex, or only thinking about it, I recommend this book as a resource for complete, non-judgemental information about sex.
