Great Book
This was a very clever idea to put down on paper though not perfect, it worked for me. The central character's anger is understandable, not forced or fake. A very interesting and good read. A different view of heaven.

FRANK PERRETTI LOVERS HAVE TO READ THIS ONE.
This book was comparable to the Perretti series "Peircing the Darkness". Cunningham seems to have a talent which exposes the relationship between angels, demons and humanbeings. This book along with "It happened at the Sunset Grill" is certain to be a best seller among christian authors. I believe one of the terrible things about hell wilL be that they can see heaven as the rich man in the Lazarus parable could. The younger brother who committed suicide in this story understood that heaven was the place to be even though he was in hell. The torment of knowing you are in the wrong place because of decisions you have made on earth, would be overwhelming. This book will give you insights as to how satan opporates in daily human affairs. It will show you how satan uses our humanity against us and turns it to sin. This book is a must read and a great addition to any persons collection.

Why was this the only edition?
An ably assembled resource for literature students, trivia addicts, and those trying to settle intellectual debates. The only criticism: "Literary Laurels" did not become an annually revised visitor to bookstores.

Literary Laurels sleeps right next to me.
It's a great resource for my book club. We have fun arranging our agenda with Literary Laurels as our guide, more like our Bible. It's helped me on crossword puzzles and reading past winners of the Pultizer and Nobel. I love how it's easy to use and covers a great range of award-winning fiction. I just bought the KIDS' EDITION and I recommend parents and grandparents like me do the same. And keep it by your bedside. You never know when you'll need it

great introduction to Orthodox thinkers
Plekon has done a very good job in making available to american readers the lives and thoughts of several 20th century Eastern Orthodox theologians and "lovers of mankind". Each essay examines the main currents of thought for each person and their influnece upon the world in this century. Included are essays about St. Seraphim of Sarov, Sergius Bulgakov, MAria Skobtsova, Fr. Lev Gillet, Paul Evdokimov, Fr. Gregory Krug, Nicholas Afanasiev, Fr. Alexander Schmemann, Fr. Jean Meyendorff, and Fr. Alexander Men. With many first-hand accounts of their lives, the author gives keen insights into their personalities, the context of their actions and writings, and their continuing relevance for the 21st century.

I would also recommend "Light From The East" by Aidan Nichols for an intro to some other Orthodox thinkers. It is out of print, but available from time to time. Enjoy!

The lives of ten Eastern Orthodox Christian faithful
Living Icons: Persons Of Faith In The Eastern Church by ordained Orthodox priest Michael Plekon (Professor, Department of Sociology/Anthropology, religion and culture, Baruch College, City University of New York) is a close look at the lives of ten Eastern Orthodox Christian faithful, each of whom lived in the eighteenth through twentieth centuries. Fascinating, uplifting, and evenhanded in its study of characters, foibles, and faith, as well as highly recommended for students of Orthodox Christian History, Living Icons is a profound testimony to the path set by just a few among many amidst constantly changing and conflicting headwaters of religious belief worldwide.

Older struggling readers
I teach Title 1 disadvantaged reading students, most are learning English as a second language. I did a word a day with my 6th, 7th , and 8th graders. The making words lessons allowed me to introduce vocabulary, point out spelling patterns, talk about vowel variances, and talk about how our words are made up. I asked them to write the words as well as manipulate the letters. Sometimes, I asked them to group the words if there were several words with the same spelling pattern.

Great book for Phonics & Spelling Gr.3-5
This is a great how-to book for one specific phonics & spelling teaching strategy. It has made a big difference in my third graders ability to sound out unknown words and incorporate their knowledge of spelling patterns. Making Words is geared for K-3rd. Making Big Words is for 3rd thru 5th graders. It's a hands-on approach and it is very adaptable. You can do it just as suggested or adjust it to your students' particular need. It includes hundreds of lessons. It can also be used in coordination with thematic units that you may be using in your room. A great resource. Worth every penny. I just love Patricia Cunningham!

Easy to use!
I teach sixth and seventh grade students. While I've known that these kinds of concrete, multi-level activities would be helpful to them, the logistics always left me defeated--and I'd never have all of my letter tiles returned at the end of a lesson. This book solved my word-making problems, however! Each list corresponds with a strip of reproducible letter tiles in the back. Hand out a new strip for each lesson, and let the kids keep them when they're done. The activities truly are multi-level and interesting even to above grade-level learners. If you're a middle level teacher who wants to increase the word knowledge of your students, this book is a wonderful resource. Now, if I can just keep my colleagues from stealing it...

Making More Big Words
Very practical guide for teachers struggling with visual and kinestic learners in Spelling and Reading. Easy to incorporate into your daily routine in small groups or large. Encourages students to remember pattens and sound/symbol relationships. I have been using this in my classroom this year and have seen results. This is a must for all elementary teachers!

Wonderful Book!
John Rush gives us a present day triumph of faith. The book is masterfully written in a personal down to earth style. The author takes you from the California gold country, to the most remote location on earth to a little island in vanuatu which is home to an an amazing tribe of people. He tells the true story of a young man's struggle to come to grips with the reality of God, and the blessings that come from obedience to God.

An amazing journey across the globe and through faith.
Mr. Rush presents us with a thrilling account of faith and a journey to an isolated island. The book is a masterpiece, detailing an early life as an atheist to a switch to a missionary to the islands around Vanuatu. Everything from being made a temporary pastor to avoiding drive-by shootings. This book proves that God is active in the world today, and deeply cares for those unreached people in the world. A true-life account of a missionary, and a wonderful example of God's work in our world.

The Spiritual Odyssey of Soulmates
"I moved up through the roof of our motor home and out into the night sky. I continued moving toward the stars, faster and faster, and while I could see the countryside and distant city lights shining below me, I could at the same time sense a bright light high above, gradually growing larger. I accelerated into a tunnel that closed around me, leaving the Earth behind. There was just the tunnel, the ever-growing light, and a sense of peace. I felt no fear. This seemed so natural, like I'd done it a thousand times before. Whatever lay ahead, I knew it was good."

These are the words of Jewel Caravans as she soars into realms we mere mortals can only imagine. She and Dakin, her soulmate and husband, have spent their lives as seekers, searching for answers. What is the purpose of life? Who is God? Perhaps their answers dwell in the ever-growing light.

"Messages" by David Cunningham is a story of love, of searching, of death and life. It's a series of emails - messages - that takes its reader into what some might call "the face of God"

It's a story, and a spiritual odyssey - a page-turner you can't put down, worth every moment spent reading it.

Electronic-Age Journey to Higher Consciousness
Excellent and intriguing concept of using emails to tell the stories of two (or is it three?) seekers of higher consciousness. I was spellbound by the author's grasp of locations and New Age techniques. A romantic tale for the ages.

lots to learn from this book - and great fun to read
-sheds a lot of light on Morocco and on the perspective of the British guy who wrote it at the end of the 19th century. In some ways Morocco at that time was perhaps a bit like Afghanistan today...? --Worth thinking about...

Wonderful escape into a past world
Cunninghame Graham is a superb observer and writer. In Mogreb-el-Acksa, published in 1898, Graham describes his attempt to cross the Atlas Mountains and reach the forbidden city of Tarudant. However, he was detained in the mountains for four months by the Kaid of Kintafi, and ultimately turned back to Marakesh. The places he visits and the people he meets come alive, and a current of humor bubbles throughout the narrative. His observations on western vs. eastern cultures, in many instances unfavorable to both but usually funny and profound, apparently made the book unpopular when it was published. I recommended the book to two friends, one a world traveller, the other a Moroccan. Both loved it.

FINALLY! A BOOK THAT WORKS FOR UPPER EL
This book is by far the most beneficial I have found for my upper elementary students struggling to improve their reading skills. It gives simple, step by step instructions for each of the activities and requires very little planning time for the teacher. EVERY child can succeed at improving reading skills, and the activities are appropriate for older students. They do not feel like they are doing 'baby' lessons- an issue I have dealt with when using other phonics books.

Second Chance for Upper Grade Readers
This is an excellent choice for teachers who wish to implement a phonics program that can really work for upper grades. The book is divided into months. Each month there are activities ready to be used. The activities are categorized into four specific goals. Once you learn how to teach the four goals for the first month, you will be prepared to teach the same lessons again the next month, of course, using different words.

The phonics activities help students notice spelling patterns in words through clever activities that the older kids will enjoy. For instance, there are phonics lessons based on brand names! I highly recommend this program because it will give upper grade students the chance to learn how to spell high frequency words, to identify spelling patterns in big and small words, to monitor their spelling, and to use root/prefix/suffix parts of words to define and spell words.

This book is suitable for 4-8 grades. It includes lessons that will last for nine months of the school year. Teachers on year round schooling will also be able to use this book. Each lesson should take between 15-30 minutes, depending on the teacher's scehdule. This is an excellent book for upper grade teachers!

Operative Obstetrics Treasure
This book is simply fantastic. For the practicing obstetrician, it encompasses almost all the issues dealing with the specialty, concerning operative techniques. For the student, there is a lot of new approaches to subjects that other books do not show. For example, there's an entire chapter on symphysiotomy, another on external cephalic version, both subjects very rarely seen in such depth in common textbooks. There's also a very good chapter on surgical basics, dealing with needles, sutures and knots. In short, i recommend this book for those who truly love Obstetrics' practice.

Dr. Hankins is a very intelligent man.
