Lonely Planet Korean Phrasebook (Lonely Planet Language Survival Kit)

to the point
Living in Korea, I've seen and used several phrasebooks. In most respects, one is as good as another. But this one has the best elementary explanation of Korean grammar I've ever seen in a phrasebook; if you plan to be in Korea long enough to learn a little Korean, this will be the most helpful phrasebook that I know of.

The problem is that they created their own system of romanization and a few phrases in the book are presented in it but not in Korean. That is really annoying; the phrases are completely worthless unless you want to study LP's unique romanization.

GREAT BOOK!
I'm Korean. I live in Busan, South Korea.
And I bought this book. This book is very COOL.
This book is very useful for foreign tourist.
Why don't you visit to South Korea with this BOOK?
We always WELCOME! ^-^

Superb!!!
It all makes sense now! My adoptive daughter was born in Korea, so our whole family has been trying to learn a little Korean. But believe me, it wasn't easy.
However, this book's grammar and pronunciation sections did a great job of explaining things. The book is very well organized. I'd have to say it's the best such book on Korean I've seen.
Somehow they have come up with just about every possible expression you might need, which means the only drawback to the book is that it's a little thick.

Medical Phrase Index: A Comprehensive Reference to the Terminology of Medicine (ME128)

An Excellent Medical Transcription Reference
Being in the medical transcription field having to look up new words and decipher dialects, this is one book every transcriptionist should have. To look up a word by disease and/or symptom is a lot faster than a flashlight without batteries in the dark! I highly recommend this book to medical transcriptionists whether a beginner, intermediate or experienced one.

Medical Phrase Index
This latest revision - 4th edition (10/15/01) is even easier to use and more comprehensive (250,000+ entries) than previously. This is truly THE medical phrase resource. Nothing else comes close! We use it dozens of times a day.

Required MT resource
When one hears one word in a phrase but is not sure of others, this resource is invaluable. Of all my resources for medical transcription, this is one of the few I use every day. Can't live without it.

My Big Book of Everything

Not just for 4 and up...
I've given this book (and its earlier editions) often as a new-baby gift for babies in the US and abroad. I feel that it's a great present for non-native speakers, because of all the words you only learn in your native language!

My granddaughter, age 22 months has loved it for about the last year, as have other very young children I know. For a while, she called it "a book" -- that is, the only one she really acknowledged. She's now branched out to other books but still enjoys identifying the photos in this one. She doesn't care if they're obscure, she likes discussing them, and her favorite pages vary over time. Like the other reviewers, I'll soon be buying a new copy as the first one is wearing out. Maybe the publisher should consider a hard-page edition.

Visual Journey
My first impression was that this book was overly stocked with pictures. However, on a second look I could see the benefit of grouping items together and putting many items on one page. You can teach many items that relate to other items you will find in your home or in the world as you travel.

This is a visual journey for children that includes 800 brilliantly colorful pictures. Even the inside covers are "covered" with pictures. For the young child, you can start with the familiar items around the home like a lamp, a vase, a telephone, bed, toothpaste and highchair.

The section on clothes teaches all the basics...then onto the toys. That will most likely be one of the favorite areas in this book. Cooking and baking might encourage more adventure in the kitchen. Maybe using this book to introduce a child to the names of kitchen essentials will get them interested in making something delicious.

Other sections include: Food to eat, Fruit, vegetables, In the workshop, Flowers and plants, Weather, and Seasons and times. Then onto: On the farm, In the countryside (love the meadow picture!), Big Animals, Small animals, Baby animals, Birds. The theme changes constantly and next you will see hot-air balloons and everything that flies in the sky.

Children who live in the city will love: In the sea, At the seaside, Noises, Animal noises (you have to love the mouse on this page!). Children in the country will love: In the city, Buildings, Building machines, Shopping (yummy markets and bookstores). In the jobs people do, children are dressed up in each of the main job descriptions.

"Me and My Body" is a section to explain the names of the mouth, back, eyelashes, teeth..etc. Things we do such as crying, touching, eating, throwing a ball, hiding, laughing are all pictured with the word of the activity. Shapes and patters lists the main shapes at the top of the page and then you can find the patterns and shapes in what you see in the pictures.

For instance, the red square looks like the windows and the star looks like the starfish. The counting section is especially tasty with all sorts of candies to count.

Then, the next page opens and you see hills, deserts, a waterfall, a river, a volcano and much more. Each word has a picture and each picture is a delightful look at the world around us. To easily find a word your child is learning...just use the handy index to look up words like store, toothbrush, jaguar, cyclist or even beach.

Here's what I missed in my other review!
I neglected to mention that we own two copies of this book. My daughter's is so worn with use and has enough pages torn by her toddler hands that we purchased a second one for my son. Also, I agree with the reviewer who described using the book by focusing on the familiar and temporarily skipping over other topics. We did/do this as well. Eventually, however, our children have come to enjoy the entire book, and have definitely learned from it.

Excellent Reference
This is an excellent reference of World War II. Well written, some subjects receive minor mention (as they should) while other subjects receive pages of detailed information. One of the best World War II books I own.

Worth every cent !
This book is without question the most useful and comprehensive reference book on the Seond World War to appear in a single-volume, paperback format. It presents data ranging from amazing weapon specifications to wonderfully detailed biographies. Along with the many facts and dates of WWII, the book also includes information that while not common knowledge, is vital to a complete understanding of the conflict. For example, the book explains the strategies, theories, and the complex organization of the axis and allies. In addition, this wealth of information is presented in an easily accessible manner. While it can be read like a book, it is most useful as a quick reference. When I'm reading a book and come upon something I'm not familiar with, I just look in the Oxford Companion for a concise, yet complete explanation. It truly is a superb book.

Extremely helpful reference book on WW2
This compilation of World War Two information is incredibly useful for all purposes. It has in-depth information that breaks down every aspect of the war, including detailed charts and statistics, historical biographies, and provides articles on countless subjects that a person may have regarding World War II. I used this as a major reference source during the preparation of my history class presentations I do each day about World War II. The charts and stats tables used throughout the book make it indispensable, and well worth the cost.

Very good value
One gets quite a lot for one's money with this one-volume encyclopedia. It's impressive how the editors at Merriam-Webster are able to make a book that is so comprehensive and concise at the same time.

There are a couple of odd things about it, though. Many of the articles cover topics that concern current events, with articles on recent celebrities like Jerry Seifeld and companies like Microsoft. Unfortunately, such current topics must come at the expense of other less current topics. This excessive concentration on current topics could make the book date quite rapidly.

Also, many of the articles have been lifted straight from the Encyclopedia Britannica. This would not have been a problem if the editors had taken advantage of the opportunity to revise the articles to bring them up to date, but unfortunately they didn't do so in many cases. The net result of these two editorial decisions is to give the book a straight-from-the-headlines feel for one article, and then an ancient feel for the next.

A must have for the college bound!
This conveniently-sized encyclopedia is a portable and inexpensive desktop reference to put alongside your dictionary. The volume includes 25,000 entries, 1,300 photographs and illustrations, 350 maps and diagrams, and thankfully includes pronunciations of some words and names. Developed with , the reference features clear and concise entries of about 100-300 words.

A FIRST-RATE REFERENCE
Perfect for dormitory rooms, home offices and libraries, this essential volume is affordable, accessible, and authoritative.

Created in cooperation with Encyclopedia Britannica as well as a host of academic consultants, Merriam Webster's Collegiate Encyclopedia is a one volume treasure of information. It holds more than 25,000 entries covering every facet of scholarship and discipline, such as the arts, business, geography, history, literature, medicine, philosophy, pop culture, religion, science, technology, and up to the minute info regarding computers.

Pursuing an area of interest is easy with alphabetically sequenced listings, and 70,000 cross references which lead to additional data.

A pronunciation guide with some 10,000 words increases fluency and self-confidence.

Graphics heighten interest with photographs, maps, diagrams, and tables, thereby enriching awareness as well as learning.

True to its reputation of producing high quality reference materials Merriam-Webster again offers a first-rate volume.

The Oxford Book of Aphorisms

More a companion than a reference
This book has been with me since before I left college, decades ago. I dip into it frequently, and the wisdom contained within always reveals something new. John Gross did a first class job of collecting--and referencing and indexing--all of these great quotes. This book, so rewarding in itself, is also a great introduction to many wonderful writers and thinkers. It's docked one star for having a slight cynical tinge--a few quotes from Tryon Edwards and a few more from Caleb Colton and Augustus Hare would have evened things up. Give this to your favorite brooding young person.

Great tool for expanding ones horizons...
After reading this book I guarantee you'll be a few IQ points higher up on the intelligence scale. So what are you waiting for? Order it now, you don't wanna die without having read this. I'll share with you some of my favorite quotes from various subjects in the book, so here goes:

"Even while a thing is in the act of coming into existence, some part of it has already ceased to be." -Marcus Aurelius, 2nd Century

"Religions are kept alive by heresies, which are really sudden explosions of faith." -Gerald Brenan

"The bird a nest, the spider a web, man friendship." -Blake

"Until death, it is all life." -Cervantes

"Liberty is the right to do what the law permits." -Montesquieu

"Oh well, no matter what happens, there's always death." -Napoleon

The Oxford Book of Aphorisms
An Aphorism is the concise statement of a moral or philosophical principle. It offers a comment on some recurrent aspect of life, clothed in terms which are meant to be permanently or universally applicable.

In 'The Oxford Book of Aphorisms', John Gross selects a wide variety of aphorisms that are placed into 58 categories, such as: Mankind, Life, Self-Doubt, Friends & Foes, Happiness & Sorrow, Illusion & Reality, Death, and The Afterlife.

Each category usually runs under 10 pages or so of collected aphorisms. This facilitates ease of research when seeking views on a particular topic.

In the chapter on aphorisms, we find: 'A perfectly healthy sentence is extremely rare'. Indeed, this is a rare book.

Pocket Catholic Dictionary

The Fullness of Catholic Teaching
As in his many other works, the late Father Hardon did not hesitate to present Catholic teaching in its entirety. The pressures of cultural correctness did not keep him from presenting the whole truth of Catholic teaching. Unlike other writers, he did not engage in artful ambiguity about some of the teachings of the Church.

In the Pocket Catholic Dictionary, he manages to provide insights in a small abridged dictionary that others can't or won't communicate in much larger works. One example from my own research will illustrate the value of Fr. Hardon's pocket dictionary as a jumping off point for further research.

In researching the canon law issue of whether contraceptive intercourse was sufficient to consummate a marriage, I found several specialized reference sources and commentaries full of ambiguity and even one that was ideologically slanted in its presentation. For Catholics, this particular issue of canon law is important because a marriage becomes indissoluble only after consummation. One of the few sources that addressed the issue forthrightly was Fr. Hardon's Pocket Dictionary and related works, while other lengthy reference works specializing in canon law were of no help. Without mincing words, Fr. Hardon states in his definition of "Consummated Marriage" that "contraceptive intercourse does not consummate Christian marriage."

Thus, on an issue of great importance to Catholics, this small pocket dictionary opened up an avenue for further research where larger and more specialized works failed to enlighten. I am sure there are other issues out there for which Fr. Hardon's Pocket Catholic Dictionary would turn out to be a good and reliable starting point.

Handy reference
I've used this book so much, I've worn the covers off. It has more detailed information than one might expect from a pocket dictionary. I recommend this book to anyone, but especially to those who are just learning about Catholicism.

A Complete Catholic Resource
This book is an incredible tool. As a Catholic, with thousands of questions, this book has thousands of answers! It is truly the best Catholic resource I have encountered!

Puffy, Xena, Quentin, Uma : And 10,000 Other Names for Your New Millennium Baby

Excellent for Writers Who want something different!
I'm an amateur writer, and I LOVE Puffy, Xena, Quentin, Uma! This is an excellent book that will help you come up with great, contemporary and hip names for modern characters. No more, should your contemporary characters be stuck with names like Justin, Lance, and Alex. Instead, your characters could be called: Gage, Ozmon, and Lizbet! Each chapter header comes complete with famous 'real people' who are using the names in question. I love it.

My only peeve with this book, is the low quality paper it is printed on. This paper is a very low grade, and seems only a few grades above toilet paper. Don't let this deter you, however. This is a great book. A must buy.

The Totally Excellent baby book for us! (not our parents)
I was sitting down thumbing through the pages of another book and getting NOWHERE. I was having about as much fun as one has trying to BBQ in a rainstrom.

I needed a book that would work for me. I saw the title of this book a decided that it might be worth a good chuckle to atleast look at. This is the book!!! I love the way she has organized it. The little "Crib Notes" are a great eye-opener and a good chuckle. It saves you time, thought and the ever-so-friendly opinions from family and friends when you might be considering naming your child Elvira or Shaq.

Having grown up during the same time as her audience, Joal is in tune with the reader. She doesn't bother listing some names that haven't been used in 100 years just so she can have a book of 25,000+ names. She is smart and gives names that you might actually consider naming your child.

If you are looking to enjoy naming your baby, I highly recommend this book. If you are just looking for a name (like for the pet goldfish) then the book on the checkout stand (you know, the one by the National Enquirer) will work just fine.

Throw away your list and buy this book!
That's what my wife and I did while trying to pick a name for our fourth and final child. We had a huge list of more traditional-style names, but had no luck choosing a name we both could agree on. So we threw the list away, got this book, and let our imagination run wild. Two days later, Zoe Piper was born! This book is fun to read and will bring back lots of memories for those of us in the 30-35 age range. Oh, the joys of feeling like a kid again! Joal, thanks for making a difficult task fun.
