Brief Encounters: A Dictionary of Briefs and Phrases for Court Reporting

A Court Reporter's Bible!
WOW, WOW, WOW!!! I think this book should be required reading for EVERY court reporter. I've been reporting 21 years, have all my certifications, but I'd have to say I feel like I have just now "turned the corner" after incorporating some of these briefs!

Curious? How about MOINGS for "among other things," AEFM for "African-American," and my favorite, the 40+ pages of "is" phrases including STHR-LGS for "Is there anything else."

You'll want to make space in your carrying case so you always have this reference with you!

THE building-block resource for reporters and students.
I can't say enough good things about Laurie's books for court reporters. BRIEF ENCOUNTERS should be on every reporter's and student's reference shelf. This book contains one- and two-stroke briefs and phrases for everyday reporting and is full of ideas which you will want to incorporate into your dictionaries. Some examples:

HOUB = how about HOUBT = how about the HOUBZ = how about these HOUBS = how about those HOUF = how far HOUFT = how fast HOUM = how many HOUFM = how many of them HOUMZ = how many of these HOUMS = how many of those

The consistency of Laurie's outlines makes it very easy to adopt new briefs and streamline your writing. Get it -- you won't be disappointed!

Fabulous resource for court reporters!
Laurie Boucke has written a few dynamite books for court reporters, one of which is Brief Encounters. Are you hearing the same words over and over and writing them out and falling behind and your hands hurting as a result? Well, forgetaboutit! Check out Brief Encounters for a totally sensible one-stroker for tons and tons of often-used words.

Some examples that are worth the price of admission:

regurgitate = GURJ kidnap = KIP stretch of the imagination = STREJ

And on and on and on. I say get this book and her two other books, CATegorically Speaking and the newest one, Medical Briefs.

A Must Have for every teacher and researcher
An excellent yet concise encyclopedy of surprisingly wide range of statistical topics, very dense and ballanced text. Exhaustive descriptions and definitions on few lines of text with good referrences. I can hardly think of basic or advanced statistical terms not included here. Thanks.

thorough coverage of statistical terms
Brian Everitt is a well known statistician and author. This dictionary was prepared by a scholar and includes many famous statistician as well as statistical terms. It provides concise and accurate descriptions and in many cases also includes pictures and formulae. Literature references are often mentioned. Particularly useful to biostatisticians. It is an excellent reference document.

A very comprehensive dictionary
I bought this book to celebrate passing my Master's course. It's worth every penny. There is hardly a Statistical term that one might want to refer to that is not defined in it. Just occasionally there is a definition which could be a bit more precise, e.g. the definition of hazard as a probability rather than its differential coefficient. Nevertheless, an excellently comprehensive book and a very worthwhile addition to anyone's library.

Best dictionary I've ever seen
The Oxford Canadian English dictionary is a must for all exchange students spending some time in beautiful Canada, and for everyone who wants to have a handy reference book and dictionary at home. It helped me enormously in my Canadian culture course, giving me information about Canadian people and events; for example, about Joyce Wieland, Greg Curnoe, the October crisis, but it also served me as a 'normal' dictionary. Terms and expressions are explained in an understandable manner so that non-native speakers of English have a chance to familiarize themselves with such words as 'draft dodger' or 'nuclear family'. The Oxford Canadian English dictionary is the best dictionary I've ever seen, and I can only recommend it to everyone who works with English or is interested in getting to know the English-speaking world.

A Great single volume Dictionary for all North Americans!
The title may say "Canadian" but this dictionary is equally useful to Americans and other users or students of North American English. British and American English dictionaries often give little coverage of the other's special vocabulary (slang, idioms, regionalisms, bureaucratic terminology, etc), this Canadian Oxford Dictionary covers American, British and of course Canadian vocabulary. Even regionalisms are covered and lablelled as such. This dictionary has extensive geographical and biographical entries (covering the world). The IPA sytem is used and a handy IPA reference chart is printed on the bottom of each and every page. Each word entry includes etymological information. This dictionary also treats its readers like adults and does not shy away from `naughty` language. The appendixes are Canadian oriented. The paper, printing and binding are of a high quality and the dust jacket is attractive. The above mentioned features coupled with a low price make this dictionary a great buy.

The Cadillac Of Canadian Dictionaries
The Canadian Oxford Dictionary was written by five Canadian lexicographers and originally published in June 1998. Wordsmiths regard this work as the Cadillac of Canadian dictionaries and the foremost authority on current Canadian English. It encompasses 130,000 entries, including 2,000 Canadian words, 500 Canadian regionalisms, 1,200 Canadian place names, 800 Canadian biographies and 300 Aboriginal people and cultural entries.

The book is well bound, with an Oxford blue hardcover made of a synthetic material called Kivar 5 which has gold foil stamping, called blocking, emblazoned on the spine and is protected by an attractive removable dust cover. The paper is high quality 30-lb lightweight bone white stock called Rampart Opaque. This type of paper allows the dark black text done in Swift font to be more legible and pleasing to the eye. The pages are thumb indexed and have attractive blue speckling on the outside edges.

This dictionary is of such a high quality both in content and construction, that it should be considered a mandatory reference book in every Canadian home, classroom, library and office.

ONE OF THE BEST
I own 200 cookbooks of which 30 on Italian cooking and this book comes second only to "CULINARIA ITALY" by KONEMANN.It is virtually packed with information about Italy and its food ,all accompanied by hundreds of full colour photographs of the land, the food ,the techniques and the people.Descriptions of the growing of certain vegetables,of the making of essential ingredients(e.g. pasta ,both in the home and in factories)and of the particular cuisine and tastes of every region ,make this book an immensely satisfying and enjoyable book to read. There is a plethora of recipes, authentic and tasty and explanations on the many preserved meats, salamis and cheeses of Italy. If you are interested in Italian cooking, or Italy as a land this book is essential.

so far, so good

IF YOU ARE A CAT LOVER, YOU WILL LOVE THIS BOOK!
Last Christmas a friend gave me the book, "Catwatching" also by Desmond Morris, and I was so intrigued with the book and the beautiful photography that I began searching for other books by the same author. I finally came across this one and was equally as pleased. Catworld is absolutely fantastic! The coloured photography is exquisite and the book, with just under 500 pages, contains anything and everything you want to know about your feline friends. From big cats of the wild to the various breeds of domestic cats, from the origin of Puss and Boots to cat care, this book contains a wealth of well-organized information, all in alphabetical order.

I have two Persians, and "Catworld" is a book I definitely would not want to be without. No matter how broad your knowledge is on cats, novice or expert, you are bound to find some new and interesting facts and amusing trivia contained among the pages. There are some recently published books on the market that do not contain nearly as much information as this one. "Catworld" is an excellent resource book for your library and you are bound to enjoy the stunning photography. I highly recommend this top-notch book...and your cat will love you for it!

Excelent!
Once you buy this book you wont need to buy another. A must read for all feline-friends! Don't miss it!
You will learn about breeds, history, behavior everything you want to know about cats. Desmond Morris is a great writer: clear and concise. A Desmond Morris' book is just a treasure, a delight for those who love to read about pets.

Fascinating book!
After looking through this book for a few hours, my husband and I immediately began trying to think of who we knew who would like it for a gift. Not only does it cover the subject matter you would normally expect from a book on cats, such as rundowns on all the recognized breeds, but it has interesting entries on such subjects as why cats eat grass. Beautiful pictures. A perfect gift for the cat lover on your list. Wish my friends would take the hint and buy me one!

Chamber's Etymological English Dictionary

Excellent but not well-known dictionary
I have a 25-year old copy of this book, not sure which edition it is, but it's the one with the sort of shiny, orangish-brown cover. Anyway, it really is a great dictionary, for both etymological and other purposes, and it's one of my most useful word reference works. Now out of print for many years, it's worth picking up if you can find a used copy. (You can't have enough dictionaries in your life).

Chambers Etymological English Dictionary
I wrote the publisher several years ago pleading for them to reprint this gem. It's the best little dictionary I've ever used.

one of the all-time best dictionaries. a real gem.
got this in 1976 for 95 cents. it has been the only dictionary I've ever used and the only reason I'm looking for another is that the pages are cracking and yellowing, both from use and the fact that the publisher used groundwood paper.

This is the one!
This the the best Mandarin dictionary for learners, BY FAR.

When you really start to get into the groove of learning Mandarin, you will suddenly discover that most other dictionaries totally suck: not telling you the counters for nouns, not telling you which verbs are splittable, not giving any examples at all, etc etc.

This one is great.. as an added bonus, it's been written by commies, and has some hilarious example sentences in it. ie: "They are always flaunting the flag of liberty" and "Those who oppress the people will eventually be overthrown"

It's a desk reference, not a pocket dictionary. I still haven't found a truely great pocket dictionary.

My favorite Mandarin Dictionary
This dictionary is extremely useful because it makes use of many real-life examples. It is the only dictionary that I know that uses in its examples (1) Simplified Mandarin, (2) Pinyin, and (3) English all at once. With other dictionaries, you have to spend time looking up characters offered in the definition. Not the case here. Must bear in mind that this is a dictionary for the Mainland. Having said that, there are some great "colloquial" entries, and these entries are really fun for getting to learn the Chinese that is really spoken on the Mainland. Really recommend this dictionary.

Excellent, excellent book
What makes this dictionary a very useful tool is its use of examples. Many, many examples provide many hints. Has become my favorite learning tool to date.

Kitty Tales - a story of bad hyperlinks
Dont be confused to see people rave about the list of housecleaning methods contained in these night time stories about kitties. Someone has goofed on the hyperlinks attached to the book. Hopefully they'll discover it one day and fix it. For now we'll just have to wait to see what other readers really think of the book

A Quick and Easy Instruction Guide to Clean ANYTHING !
The book gives you the quick and easy details on how to clean anything imaginable. Each iitem is detailed on how to clean it properly and with which cleaner so you won't damage the item. From (A) Afghans to (Z) [Zebras don't have to be cleaned], Aslett has the answer on cleaning anything that can be dirty, stained, discolored, gummed on, painted on, greased on, rusted on, mildewed or crayoned. In case you need to clean your home's furnace or a brass musical instrument, its in here too!

Great Reference!
This is an alphabetical listing of how to clean just about EVERYTHING! It is a handy reference tool, to help clean those items we don't think about very often, as well as better ways to do daily cleaning. He includes detail listings of items such as fabrics - listing the most common, their characteristics and how best to clean them. His entry on "Spot Removal" goes on for 2+ pages, teaching how to identify the type of spot, as well as the best treatments. Under "Fall Cleaning" he lists 10 items to thoroughly clean on a yearly basis. He even has a listing of things to consider when hiring cleaning help. I bought this book in conjunction with "How to Get Organized When You Don't Have the Time" by Stephanie Culp. They complement each other well, as this book teaches how to clean while Ms. Culp's book teaches time management and prioritizing.

Just what I needed
I could not expect anything more from a thesauras. This has all the words I, through my preteen years, have needed, without boggling my mind with lots of words that I never try to use. I don't feel overwhelmed, but I DO find the information I need.

How can I describe this Thesaurus
This thesaurus is:
Fantastic
Excellent
High Quality
Stupendous
Superiour
and least, but not last, very good!

All joking aside, it's a thesaurus. It's a good value and as good as any other thesaurus.

Elementary Teacher Prizes This Book!
_The_Clear_and_Simple_Thesaurus_Dictionary is the most practical thesaurus I have found for use with my fourth- and fifth-grade students. Unlike many thesauruses, it is formatted in a style that students (and adults!) will find familiar and easy to use. While not as comprehensive in scope as those designed for college use, this thesaurus allows students the satisfaction of finding synonyms or associated words for almost any word they might need. I had not found this to be true of other "beginning" thesauruses, which was a frustration to both my students and to me. This gem was a major find, and is now in regular use in my classroom. I highly recommend it to any teacher of intermediate or junior high age students, as well as to parents who want a truly helpful resource for their school-age children.
