I LUV THIS BOOK!!!!
Back in around 97 or 98, I was crazy about these two guys in a movie and started setting up funny situations in a roleplay where one guy would use idioms and the other would take them all literally. I was sooo happy to find this book to use as an idiom reference!!! I tried a couple of other idiom books, but this one is by far the best! ^_^ So warm and friendly, and I luv the cartoon kids who host the thing :) I am totally hooked on this book! ^_^ Buy it, BUY IT!!!

A Masterpiece!
Finally, a book that explains idioms in a way my son can understand-clearly and unambiguously. Because he has an autistic spectrum disorder, he tends to be very literal. He has read this book from cover to cover and is starting to incorporate idioms, usually correctly, into conversation. In addition, the author presents the history (if known) of each idiom, something children(mine) who enjoy factoids love.

This book should be required reading for speech therapists, teachers, the language-delayed, and those learning English as a second language.

Excellent book to aid kids understand grown-up talk!
My husband and I often unconsciously speak in idioms to our kids. Now, when we say things like "don't burn your bridges"; "I'm tickled pink"; or "snug as a bug in a rug", and the kids can find out what we are talking about!

Scribner Bantam English Dictionary

Best inexpensive paperback dictionary, hands down
Of all of the English dictionaries I have encountered, this one is clearly the best value for the price of the [inexpensive] paperback dictionaries. It is one of the few paperbacks I have seen that covers etymologies.

It avoids the overly concise definitions found in other paperback dictionaries while still remaining compact and inexpensive. I consider it an alternative to a bulky hardback desk reference dictionary.

Best Dictionary Less Than 20 Pounds
This is the best dictionary that I have found that weighs less than 20 pounds. This was highly recommended in my college English grammar courses, but I compared all of them myself. If you want a smaller volume, get this one. If you want a larger bookshelf volume, but not as large as the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), get the Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary (10th edition). That, in addition to this book, would be an excellent combination. This book has good descriptions and comparisons of usage, exactly what college students need, especially if they want to fit it into their backpack of books.

simply the best
I have been a dictionary freak for many years, but nothing matches the scribner bantam dictionary. written in beautiful english , its like reading a good book. My poor unabridged dictionary is collecting dust.
if you want to expand your vocabulary and get the correct word each time, buy this little treasure trove. you wont be sorry.

Serbo-Croatian Just for you: A First Year Course (2 Volume Set)

Phenomenal Book
Biljana Sljivic-Simsic's book is wonderful. She understands linquistics, understands teaching, understands how students learn. This is worth every penny and more.

Excellent for beginners
My father is from the former 'Jugoslavija' and consequently I have developed an strong interest in his background and an even stronger desire to learn his 'mother tongue'. Unfortunately he is unable to teach me so I have been searching book stores and the internet for suitable 'teach yourself' books. I find Serbo-Croatian Just for You provides me with an excellent incite to the basic grammar and helps enormously to improve my understanding of the associated intricacies of the language. I would like to see a 2nd year programme come on line.

Great book, very clear and easy to follow.
I've tried a few different books for learning Serbo-Croatian-this one is far better than the others-highly recommended

The Shambhala Encyclopedia of Yoga
Published in Hardcover by Shambhala (May, 1997)
Author: Georg Feuerstein
Amazon base price: $30.00
Used price: $15.75
Average review score:

Indispensable, lively and a pleasure to read
This book stands alone in English. There is simply nothing else like it. Feuerstein is the leading academic expert on yoga in the United States while Shambhala is the leading publisher of books on yoga, so it is not surprising that this is clearly a superior work that fills a void. As such it is a boon to scholars and practitioners alike.

It is also very well cross-referenced so that a reader may, by following the starred words, begin or expand his own study of yoga. There is a guide to pronunciation of the Sanskrit words, numerous bits of black and white artwork and photos, and an engaging and informative introduction by Feuerstein. This handsome book has all those words that you won't find in even an unabridged English dictionary, defined and given their expression in an historical and spiritual context. Anyone with more than a passing interest in yoga will find this book invaluable.

I should add that this is a revised and greatly expanded edition of Dr. Feuerstein's Encyclopedic Dictionary of Yoga (1990), and that it dwarfs both Ernest Wood's Yoga Wisdom (1970) and Harvey Day's Yoga Illustrated Dictionary (1971), which I have enjoyed, but which are also very much out of date.

For Dr. Feuerstein's revision (due circa 2010, I would imagine) perhaps some entries on Westerners (and contemporaries) who have contributed to the study and practice of yoga would be appropriate, including, e.g., Theos Bernard (I was pleased to see eleven photos herein of Bernard demonstrating asana), Richard Hittleman, B.K.S. Iyengar, Swami Vishnudevananda, and others.

Bottom line: this is an up to date, thorough, and lively work of reference without peer.

A Must Resource Book for Yoga Teachers/Students
As a yoga writer, teacher and PhD, I still use this Dr. Feuerstein's Encyclopedia of Yoga daily as I study yoga. The precise explanations help me understand the subtle points of yoga. The references to other Sanskrit terms is invaluable. This book is worth it, especially to help when reading other texts. I write this as a thanks for this great book!

A magnificent book of reference and daily use
An invaluable resource book for all lovers of yoga, meditation, spirituality, and human potential. Dispels many common misconceptions about yoga and reveals its true message. A great buy!

Best sign language book for students
I have been taking ASL for the past year, and this is by far one of the best books I have seen. It shows the difference between signs for ASL, Signed English, etc. I have checked this book out of our local library three times, and now have decided to buy it for myself. It includes many signs for words that have multiple meanings, and explains the difference for each. I highly recommend this book.

Signs of the Times
A wonderful text for beginning signers. I use it in all the introductory classes I teach. I was taught formal signing from Dr. Shroyer and this is a wonderful representation of what he taught all of us students in class. I will continue to use it as I teach sign language.

Best sign language vocabulary book on the market!
A very good book for reference for finding the best sign to use in a given situation as multiple signs are given for one English word. The book is ideal for students of Pidgen Sign English (aka PSE, CASE, or Siglish) and/or Manual Coded English (aka MCE or Sign English). The only limitation of this book is that it does NOT offer any explaination of American Sign Language (aka ASL) grammar or syntax. Very good sentences to pratice, hints to remember, and multiple glosses (i.e. lables) for one sign.

Ser and Estar thoroughly reviewed
This book will successfully clarify any queries that you have with regards to the correct usage of the verbs ser and estar, which traditionally present difficulty for learners of the Spanish language. When I bought this book a few years ago I was quite surprised with the level of detail and the approach of the authors used to clarify this grammatical difficulty. The explanations are in English with examples in Spanish. The approach of the logic of usage is from Spanish to English rather than from English to Spanish which most textbooks use and perhaps that's where the confusion begins. It does clarify the notion that Ser and Estar are sometimes interchangeable (and they are not) and using one or other will definitely change the meaning of a phrase. This is the only book that I have come across thus far dedicated to the analysis and usage of these two verbs. If you are looking for an accurate and concise clarification of the usage of these verbs this book is highly recommended and not to mention is very economical.

The logic in this book is amazing
The way this book explains the difference between ser and estar makes it so much easier to remember. It seems much more intuitive and logical when I think about why I am using one over the other. I struggled with this concept before this book and I would highly recommend this to anyone who is learning spanish on their own.

A lesson in spanish cultural understanding
I am of hispanic decent and this book explains the spanish speakers way of thinking in a nutshell. Written by two hispanics, this book is the only book you'll ever need to understand how to think when thinking in spanish. I as a high school student was mistaught like everyone else in my class on the two verbs Ser and Estar...and to my surprise the first pages referred to the often misteachings of these two verbs right from the start and retaught me what my 4 years of high school spanish never did teach me. If you are a serious spanish learner...buy this book. For $9 you can't take the chance not to. I have it in front of me now and I high light many spots in the book to refer to for future use...buy it. :)

Great book for anyone who likes to study language & culture
I bought this book as a gift for an ESL student I am tutoring. My student had a lot of fun browsing though it.
The book is small, but packs a lot of information into its pages. And it's the perfect size for carrying around.

There's lots of detail in the information the author provides too, particularly cultural things. For example, the author goes extensively into how to order food at a restaurant and what is considered appropriate (eg sending food back if it's not to your liking). There's also lots of information about the US school system and other topics as well.

There are example phrases throughout that the English use but Americans don't. And the author even gives the reader grammar tips and explains why it doesn't sound right in American English. There's also a huge word list in the back of the book listing American/English equivalents and the American pronunciations.

I think this would also be a good book for Americans travelling to England.

An Informative Book !
I'm a Japanese English learner. I often see past perfects and simple pasts on many text books. Sadly they are not consistantly used. But this book taught me that's because sometimes they were written by American style. There were much more things this book cleared away ambiguity for me. If you are Japanese, I strongly recommend this instructive book for your further English study. nakamimo mirerukara douzo check site mite kudasai, koukou eigo de aimaina tokoromo wakattari simasuyo.

An invaluable linquistic pocket-tote for foreign visitors.
Newcomers to the United States and American-style English should make this pocket tote a part of their daily lives: Speak American focuses on vocabulary that newcomers need to know and provides a subject arrangement which includes information on basic cultural and linguistic differences between British and American English. Packed with clear explanations on expression and definition.

In your pocket when you need it.
Written specifically for the police, this vest pocket sized booklet will help you in important situations where language may be an obstacle. Easy to read and easy to use.
Small type as would be expected for a small book.
Check out their booklet for corrections officers as well.

speedy spanish for police personal
Make no mistake about it, if you want to learn the Spanish quickly this is one of the best books to start with. Forget the verbs, adjectives, nouns and pronouns. Start conversational Spanish now. I teach "Command Spanish" and this is a great compliment for Police Education.

Absolutely Necessary!
This little flip book goes with me everywhere. I frequently come n contact with hispanic individuals and this book allows me to interact competently and doesn't allow the subject they "No Comprende" response. It does take some work pronouncing correctly but the english phrase and the spanish coutnerpart are listed as witha pronunciation line which speaking the phrase easy even for the language inept ones out there. And for the price, Why not?

A must-have for the traveling physician or medical student
This small dictionary and phrase book fits easily into your lab coat pocket and will prove to be infinately helpful for physicians and students traveling among Swahili speaking populations. There is a small but comprehensive medical section in the back that outlines body parts and useful questions like, "are you having diarrhea".

Great dictionary!
This is the best dictionary for swahili I've seen. It's readily available and has english to swahili, swahili to english. I've made the mistake in the past to buy dictionaries that only had swahili to english or vice versa. It's a good buy. It has many words. Unless you go to East Africa or some hidden away used bookstore, this is the best dictionary for a beginner to buy.

Largest I've seen!
This was the biggest swahili-english dictionary I saw, with a ton of words to help me learn more swahili!
