Targeting Pronunciation: The Intonation, Sounds and Rhythm of American English

This a great step-by-step approach to pronunciation
I am a workplace English instructor and find Targeting Pronunciation and the audiocassette package of to be very useful in business settings as well as the classroom as a tool for teaching more effective presentation skills.
It has a fun and clear approach to covering all the essential pronunciation features such as word stress, rhythm patterns, and thought groups, as well as consonant and vowel sounds.

Students enjoy using this book and tapes because of the engaging and varied activities. Whether you are experienced or inexperienced at teaching pronunciation, Targeting Pronunciation a great book to teach from. I recommend the book and audiocassette package: ISBN 0-395-94540-2. It's the best deal and each student has a set of tapes for home practice.

Caution!
This is a really good book, but be careful. Don't buy the $33 version of this book (ISBN 0-395-90331-9). It ONLY includes the Book. Buy the $42 version of this book (ISBN 0-395-94540-2). That is the Package Edition, and includes both the Book and the Audiocassettes.

Sue Miller is specifc and detailed
We've been working on a lot of material on voice and accent for Indian Call Centers dealing with the American market.

This appears to be the best book I have come across.

It is very detailed and easy to understand and beats the current book and CD offerings like American Accent training.

A definite must buy if you are into accent reduction for individuals or training.

The Turkish Language Reform: A Catastrophic Success
Published in Hardcover by Oxford Univ Pr on Demand (January, 2000)
Author: Geoffrey L. Lewis
Amazon base price: $75.00
Used price: $42.99
Average review score:

A scholarly approach to a highly politicized issue
Turkish Language Reform, from its beginnings in the thirties to this day, has been a highly politicized issue in Turkey. Professor Lewis, a lover of "Beautiful Turkish", gives an excellent account of the historical development of this language engineering while successfully keeping his views out of the realm of language politics of Turkey. Any criticisms he has to make about the Turkish Language Association (Turk Dil Kurumu) come subtly and delicately through the carefully selected quotations from others.

This book is a must for lovers of Turkish language, linguists, historians of language (and surely for the Turkish Language Association), and it can be a fun to read for a non-Turkish taxpayer whose tax money could not be reached to finance the whole project.

For a better grasp of the book, some knowledge of Turkish language helps; the more the better to really get the beautiful "taste" of this excellent book.

excellent although more interesting if you know some Turkish
The changes in the Turkish language over the past century are fascinating, and this book does a great job of explaining some of the political and social background. The author is an expert and extremely knowledgeable on this topic. To me the most telling summary was seeing a paragraph of one of Ataturk's most famous speeches presented in the original, then in a retranslation done later, then a re-retranslation done yet later! The first retranslation was necessary because the original could hardly be understood any more, with all the Arabic-derived words etc. The second retranslation was necessary because even the first retranslation could hardly be understood today! This book will be mostly interesting to those who know at least some Turkish already (and the more the better) or to those interested in linguistic change and social engineering. As the other reviews mention, the changes in Turkish are the result of deliberate re-engineering of the language, not of the more usual processes of linguistic evolution. Imagine taking English and trying to get rid of all the words derived from Latin or French and use only Anglo-Saxon words or words newly derived from other Germanic languages, and you will get a partial picture of what happened with Turkish. The author's views are probably summed up by the subtitle: a catastrophic success. The language reform was effective and some of it was valuable but it may have gone too far in destroying some useful distinctions and making Turkish a somewhat less effective and graceful means of expression.

a superb review of Turkish language
Prof. Lewis' book gives the full account of the reengeneering of today's Turkish which was essentially for political reasons. The author, atrue erudite and scholar, in about 200 pages pens the process of the death of the ottoman Turkish and the birth of modern Turkish with sometimes bizarre and tragi-comic results. The book must certainly appeal to all Turkish intellectuals irrespective of their ideological position. But it is equally appealing to linguists and orientalists. I cannot praise this book high enough and recommend it strongly.

Give me a word.
An excellent resource book. I use it every day and it has improved my writing. Or, maybe I just confuse everyone with the multitude of words I appear to have at my command. Recommend this book.

Worth having to improve your writing and vocabulary.
It's right on my desk between my dictionary and thesarus where it belongs. When I can't think of the right word - which happens - it's there. I've used it as much as the other two.

Indispensable for students of English literature
Those who study English literature or are involved in translations need to widen their terminology and constantly improve their linguistics. I personally achieved this with numerous dictionaries and one of them was certainly the 21st Century Synonym and Antonym Finder. With its concise and accurate definitions one easily finds the perfect term and also keeps it in mind - and that is also of great importance. With finishing my studies of foreign languages and their literatures, I have been mostly involved in translations and thus been forced to rummage considerably through books and dictionaries - believe me you will find this book indispesanble once you have it.

A Bible for beginning codicologers
This slim volume by Michelle Brown is an excellent resource for anyone who is interested in the study of books and manuscripts (codicology). In a succinct dictionary format, Brown gives definitions of all of the major terms that may give trouble to someone visiting a museum or reading a work by such major writers in the field as Chris DeHamel. Suitable as both a textbook and a companion to books on manuscripts, this book is nearly indispensible to the beginner and the intermediate in allowing some understanding into the complex technical and art-historical vocabulary used in the field.

A great little dictionary of illumination.
This little volume provides brief definitions of all the important phrases and terms used in the study of illuminated manuscripts including forms, techniques, themes, and periods.

Great for understanding the differences between an historiated initial and an inhabited initial - or between an antiphonal and a gradual.

Most of the representative images are in color and are well chosen to illustrate the definitions. Perhaps their only drawback is their small size due to the size limitations of the book itself.

A great companion while reading to "Medieval Illuminators & their Methods of Work" by Jonathan J.G. ALexander or "A History of Illuminated Manuscripts" by Christopher De Hamel.

Must-Have glossary of terms related to medieval manuscripts.

EXCELLENT reference for the student of medieval manuscripts. This book provides short descriptions of hundreds of terms associated with medieval manuscripts and their production. While this book is particularly relevant to those beginning a study of medieval manuscripts, it is also a handy tool for anyone who loves the subject, no matter what his or her level of knowledge.

The format is easy to read, and the book itself is lavishly illustrated with color examples. You'll enjoy it.

More than 1250 easy to understand Internet and compute terms
The User Friendly Guide To Internet & Computer Terms offers more than 1250 easy to understand Internet and compute terms for the non-specialist general reader and novice computer user. Readers will also be treated to 150 high-powered "tips & tricks" that can maximize computer skills quickly; avoid Internet frauds and scams; how money is really made online and with e-commerce; what web brokers know about online investing; how to get the best prices for through online travel resources; even how to have fun with smileys, Easter eggs, and online shorthand. The User Friendly Guide To Internet & Computer Terms is a welcome and much appreciated, 340-page addition to any personal, school, or community library computer reference collection.

Great Information!
Got my first computer (really) two weeks before Christmas. It has Windows 98 as the operating system. With the computer I received two books to help get me started. Win 98 for Dummies and The User Friendly Guide To Internet & Computer Terms. Both are great. Win 98 for Dummies takes you step by step thru the process of getting acquainted with a computer. The User Friendly Guide has a great dictionary along with tons of tips and articles about computers and the Internet. There's so much to know! If you need a great reference book, spend the money and get both of these.

Something For Everyone
I've recently been forced into the digital revolution. Although I have some knowledge of PCs, it's sometimes a challenge to get my computer to function to its fullest (my fault not the computer's) This book has been wonderful. There is so much useful information here, I'm not sure where to start. My favorite section is "tips and tricks." Tons of stuff on how to get the most from a PC. The book has articles on Web shopping, investing, travel, avoiding ripoffs, the history of the Internet, how to shop for a computer, and plenty more useful stuff about the Web and computers - and here's the part I really like: If I run into a word I don't understand while reading, I can easily flip to the dictionary and look it up. Even with all that, I think my favorite section is the 200 Cool Websites. I've spent hours exploring the Web using it. This is a great reference book!

Simply the best Expository Dictionary that I know !!!
Flavio F. Lima - ( livifla@bol.com.br ) - The only thing that I don't liked was the little words of the Old Testament in it. However, this famous Dictionary is my guide when I need to understand the true meaning of the greek words. Yes every Bible student must have it in your personal library. It is an excellent reference work !

An Excellent Reference Work
An Excellent work which is if Aid to all Bible Students. The Paper is not of as nice quality as I would like, but Durable non the less. However the content and description should make this book one of the top of the list for any serious student.

An excellent book for a deeper understanding of Bible truth.
Vine's Expository Dictionary gives excellent word pictures and meanings of the original languages found in the Word of God. It is a resource book that every preacher should have for preparing sermons for their local body of believers. Nothing helps make the Scripture come alive for listeners like a clearer understanding of what the writers of the books of the Bible were trying to present through their choice of certain words in the Greek and Hebrew languages. This book opens the door of understanding of the original languages of the Bible.

Handy--even for fully bilingual people.
I agree with everyone else...this dictionary is complete and concise. I am a comparative literature major and this dictionary helps a lot when I have to translate passages on my papers, and when I am trying to get around those distinct words in either English or Spanish which do not have an exact equivalent. So there you go, I highly recommend it.

it's Everything
I am a spanish major and my parents bought me this dictionary. I have never seen such a complete dictionary! Not once in the past 3 years that I have had it, have I not been able to find the word I was looking for. Plus the entries are easy to understand. There are not a bunch of complicated symbols preceeding each word. It is great for beginners and even for more advanced students. I highly recommend it!

I strongly recomended to everyone!
This dictionary is very good and I have used it for many years. I have yet to come across a word that I wasn't able to find. I love the middle section that gives you tons of expressions in one language and gives you the equivalent in the other.

Authoritative dictionary of today's media
With so many specialized dictionaries abounding, it's a pleasure to report that Weiner's is truly useful for today's communicator. As an advertising/public relations practitioner with a deep interest in the graphic arts, I actually enjoyed finding so many technical terms accurately and often wittily defined. If you're looking for a minibrute to do your bidding, need an Oxberry unit, a Goudy other than Curt, or need a few minutes with a goyu, you're in luck here. You'll even find a goon stand or two, plus a much needed puncheon. All in all, a very valuable and solid book. It is now on my desk permanently, along with Skeat's Etymological Dictionary (1910) and the American Heritage Dictionary (1992). I've been using it daily for the past three months. Highly recommended.

More than a dictionary; no one should be without this book.
"Webster's New World Dictionary of Media and Communications" By Richard Weiner, Macmillan Publishing ISBN 0-02-860611-6 The glossaries that are on web sites usually are too skimpy, in number and length of the definitions. That's why most of us still use dictionaries and other reference books. One of the most useful specialized dictionaries is Webster's New World Dictionary of Media and Communications, recently published by Macmillan. The 678-page paperback is the most comprehensive collection ever published of technical and slang terms in 28 fields, including advertising, computer, film, journalism, marketing, printing, public relations, radio, telecommunications, television and theater. Written by Richard Weiner, a renowned public relations counselor, the book combines easy-to-read definitions with useful information for students and experts. The 35,000 "base entries" and related terms are more than in any advertising, film, literacy, television or theater dictionary. Several hundred definitions are not in any other dictionary. Another unique feature is the global orientation, with hundreds of British, Canadian, French, German and Japanese words used by film buffs and business people. Listings include abbreviations, acronyms, associations, awards, biographical dates and several hundred major companies in the media and communications fields, including headquarters cities. Current jargon, nicknames and slang are supplemented with historical information, particularly 19th century printing and publishing terms that are still used. Pithy comments call attention to words that are commonly used incorrectly, misspelled or mispronounced. The book will be useful to the many millions of people who are employed in the broadcasting, postal, promotion, telephone and other communications fields, as well as to freelancers, students, writers and computer users, and the many people who are media buffs.

This book can get you a job in media and communications.
At a job interview, or on the job,it really helps to speak to kmow the lingo of the field. This book has thousands of definitions of technical and slang words used by reporters, broadcasters, printers, advertisers, theatrical and many other media and communications fields, plus helpful hints. It is only $27.95, and Amazon's price is even less! I'm really excited about this investment, and it's easy to read and enjoy.

Comprehensive yet affordable, what more do you want?
I checked out several dictionaries before I bought this one. I have an old beat-up New American Dictionary that I simply won't part with, even though the cover's barely hanging on and the pages have turned yellow. I purchased this dictionary for a friend who's in prison and whose letters to me were filled with atricious spellings: sykology for psychology, for instance. He's working on his GED (and hopefully his spelling, though his recent letters don't show much improvement), and this book, if he uses it, will provide him with solid definitions that may make him the next Jack Henry Abbott. Then again, maybe not!

great deal
This is a great Dic, cuase it is great for the students man I like it vey much. You people sould try it.

An Amazing Reference Book
This pocket dictionary is very user-friendly and concise. It is accessible to me at all times. As a high school student, I am very busy and at times, I cannot reach for a normal hardcover dictionary, so this pocket dictionary is perfect. Not only does it give the pronunciation, syllable breaks, and definition, but it also has an appendix giving common abbreviations, alternate spellings, accents, and it even features innumerable encyclopedic references! This dictionary has it all and more, and its compact size offers even better usability. If you find yourself frequently grabbing for an accessible reference book, this is the one!

Who's Who in Oz

no better way to find out about your favorite oz people!!!!
I must say this is my favorite who's who i have ever read! i like it because it has an entry for each of the oz characters ever written about and it says a paragraph about the character then it says what book and page # it's from and, last but not least, it says the initials of the author who wrote about it. i think if you want to be a know-it-all about oz (and i mean that in a good way, i must admit)then this is the book to get. the unfortunate thing is that it is out of print, but i can assure you that you will be able to buy it used.

"The Happiest Who's Who Ever Written"
The above phrase was Reilly & Lee's advertising slogan for this book when it was published in the 1950's, and it's still true today. This is one of the best books ever written about Oz, and represents a herculean effort on Jack Snow's part. It contains listings describing nearly every character who appeared in the first 39 Oz books (from "Wizard" through "Hidden Valley") and stating on which page of which book each character first appeared. It also contains brief biographical sketches of all the authors and illustrators of the first 39 Oz books and short blurbs describing the plots of those books. It is illustrated with pictures taken from all of the books (except, if I remember correctly, "Wizard," since Reilly & Lee were not publishing that book at the time and did not have the rights to the Denslow illustrations). This book is simply a joy to browse through, especially since if one has not read all the books it covers it offers tantalizing hints about them...
