los cuentos buenos!
This set of short stories reveals a lot about the life of Ana Maria Matute. The short stories are captivating that are easy to read and also have a commical side to them! They have adventures and twist and turns that leave you questioning your own self and the choices you have made. My classmates and I read it for our Spanish 5 AP course. She is a brilliant writer.

Great book for AP Spanish Lit Preparation
Currently I'm a senior in high school preparing for the AP exams in three subjects, one being Spanish Literature. Ana Maria Matute is a great author to use for the test; the spectrum of her works touched every emotional chord in me. The loss of innoncence, jealousy, the cruelty of society, all coexist in her stories. I highly recommend this book to anyone, high school student or not, who wants to explore the realm of spanish literature. Each of her short stories and Fiesta Al Noroeste, which is my favorite, can be applied to anyone and are a joy to read. Matute is one of the best and I personally put her next to Unamuno and Cervantes.

A Must Have if You're Hebrew Isn't Perfect
This is a top-notch biblical reference and a must-have for your language shelf. Obviously, you don't want to become too dependent on it; but it can certainly get you out of a bind when you are stuck in a corner.

Solid Hebrew Lexicon
This lexicon makes most sense compared with the others I've studied with, it's got all forms of biblical apearances of each word listed, and is well readable. Its an older (1/2 previous century, from memory) lexicon, which imo means it may well be less fashionable.

An Annotated Edition of Victor Klemperer's Lti Notizbuch Eines Philologen (Studies in German Thought and History, Vol 17 - German Language Edition)
Published in Hardcover by Edwin Mellen Press (August, 1997)
Author: Victor Klemperer
Amazon base price: $119.95
Used price: $109.95

Base of Brutality, Superstructure of Banality
Victor Klemperer collected the material for this analysis of NS-Sprache in his diaries and notebooks throughout the twelve year trajectory of the Third Reich. His observational powers are astounding, as readers of his diaries can attest, but it is in this study that his cool, detached intellect distills the essence of Nazism and the elaboration of its linguistic forms. The work is enriched by its erudition and references. It is an essential resource for the student of Nazi society. Though it has appeared in many other German language editions, this edition, for the combination of the original text with helpful annotations by the translator, is particularly useful.

A must-read for German scholars
Klemperer's LTI remains a key work in understanding the development of language within the Third Reich. Klemperer wrote this text in 1946 from notes he had made in his diary during the entire Nazi era. While teaching in Dresden after the war, he realized that he had to reclaim the word "heroic" from its Nazi misuse if he hoped to ever be able to discuss the self-sacrificial aspect of heroism with his students. This realization led him to put together this compact study of how common words, such as "asphalt," can come to carry Goebbel's intended meanings. Asphalt comes to symbolize that which separates Germans from "Boden," and is what makes the inhabitants of the big city infertile and likely to vote Social Democratic. Klemperer's title, LTI, is composed of the initials of the Latin for "Language of the Third Reich", Lingua Tertii Imperii. "LTI" is the code that Klemperer used in his diary to mark examples of Nazi and Nazi-influenced language.

Excellent Reference
This is a must have for those wishing to find out more about styles, techniques, and materials. The book is written cearly and those not familiar with art will find it easy to understand.

Anyone taking an art course of some kind will find this book very helpful. Those wishing to workin in a museum with art objects would find this book very helpful too. And finally, people who love antique hunting should use this as a reference.

Great concise introductory guide to antique terms !
Found this at the library and it was just what I was looking for. An easy to understand reference for terms used about antiques and collectables. Each topic has Who, When, Where and What information with 3-8 paragraphs explaining the topic - the basics. A great companion for those numerous price guides that list items with terms such as Eastlake, Mission, Regency, etc. If you are just starting to learn antiques and you don't know what these and similar terms mean, this book is for you.

Artes Latinae, Part I (Book/Cassette Course)
Published in Audio Cassette by Audio Forum (April, 1997)
Author: Waldo E. Sweet

Learning can be fun.
Before the advent of computer learning was even on the horizon, there was the programed learning text. One of the most useful purposes to which it was put was language learning, and Drs Sweet and Sonkowski have produced among the most satisfying ways to learn Latin by using it. The books and cassettes have been around since the 70's when I first ran into them while working on my MA in ancient history. I truely enjoyed the course and learned amazingly well, certainly better than I did most of the other languages I took, with the possible exception of Egyptian heiroglyphics. I review from time to time, not because I use it but because I enjoy the endevour, and Latin is what I enjoy reviewing the most, probably because the programed format is so easy to get into again. One nice thing about this series is that it now comes in a CD form so you can work with it on a computer. The text is on screen and the cassettes are now part of it, making the visual, textual, and auditory inputs a more completely integrated experience. As another reviewer points out, however, the entire series, in whatever its format, is not cheap. It is never-the-less definitely a keeper, and therefore worth it. I still have some of the original series after almost 25 years. How many other books can one say that about?

Latin for the struggling beginner.
This is the way to learn Latin!

If you are interested in the language of the Romans but were intimidated by its never ending declensions and conjunctions this is the course for you.

Over the years I have purchased a number of Latin books in an effort to learn Latin. I was near giving-up when I stumbled on "Artes Latinae" by Mr. Sweet and cohorts. This course probably comes the closest to the natural learning of a language possible. You get to LIVE WITH the language. To me that is extremely important. You don't learn a concept or word one day and forget it the next.

The structure of the course is simple. Simple sentences are broken-down by structure and vocabulary. All words and structural parts of the sentence are explained, examples and quizzes given, and IMMEDIATE FEEDBACK supplied. Core concepts and vocabulary are summarized at the end of each chapter. One of its greatest aspects is the constant review you receive in later chapters. When you least expect it, you are asked questions from previous chapters. This review technique helps to ingrain concepts and vocabulary. The audio cassettes are invaluable for correct Latin pronunciation and are integral to the course structure. The cassettes are used continuously and effectively.

Some intelligencia may think the format is to simple. However, you can proceed at your own pace. The quicker you are at learning in general the faster you can proceed. If you want to proceed at a more leisure pace you may do so. I personally take my time, fitting the course around my other activities. But before you know it, you WILL possess a solid UNDERSTANDING and a more significant VOCABULARY of the Latin language than you ever thought possible.

The only drawback may be it's price. By the time you have purchased all four courses you have spent a not insignificant sum. However, it is worth it. Take the plunge! Skip the other books and college courses and do this first! Those other books will be a breeze to read and understand after completing "Artes Latinae". Ave Imperator!

Great book for art history classes
Perfect for writing critiques and analyses from all art movements. Great glossary of terms for a beginning art student looking up hard-to-understand words in text books.

Great for art history students!
A glossary of art terms. This book is a definite must for those writing analyses of art. It's also good for looking up those tricky terms in your text books. It is filled with artsy terms and illustrations. I used it in all my art history classes.

Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians

Author: Theodore Baker

I Use This For Academic Music
I do not believe I can say enough to extol the virtue of this book. I am finishing my Music Composition degree and Baker's has been an indespensible tool for my research. Concise and informative, this book even includes the opinions of the musical scholars. To say that this is just a dictionary would be like saying that the sun is dull.
Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians could be used like a "Who's Who" if the musical world. While the Harvard Dictionary of Music is the reigning authority, written differently from Bakers, which is easier to follow.
Specifically, I wanted information on J.S. Bach. Baker's has a particularly well-detailed, extensive section on Bach: everything I needed.
I strongly recommend this book for anyone who wants to understand the finer facts of music history.

helpful reference tool
While I don't actually own this book, I have used it a great deal for a college music class. The definitions are helpful, well-written, and present helpful, relevant information in a concise form. The biographies are good for a quick reference, but they also lead to further, more complex research questions.

Ballerina

Fabulous book!
I picked this book up at second book sale - lucky me! I didn't know much about the world of ballet when I started but certainly knew more by the time I had finished. Well written, I could easily get involved with the characters' emotions. I ended up feeling sorry yet joyful for all the main characters at the conclusion, especially Stephanie and Christine. It is well worth reading if you can get hold of a copy. I think it is a shame it has gone out of print.

Superb
This book painted the difficult life of a dancer with exquisite style and harsh realism. Edward Stewart has created a wonderful read in this book. It's impossible to put it down! For anyone involved firsthand in the ballet world, it's a must-read; for all the ballet illiterate--by the time you finish, you will be able to speak with authority and confidence on the subject. Very, very good book, and I'm saddened to see it's gone out of print.

Barron's How to Prepare for Sat II French

PICK THIS ONE !
I have had French class for 6 years now and I still have found this book very helpful because it covers all the important grammar and has a good vocabulary section that can be easily learned in a few weeks . I also recommend this book since it has 10 practice tests that are actually as hard as the the real test ( often practice tests are harder ). The CD is somewhat helpful as well, particularly for those who plan to do the listening test.

This one tops the list of SAT II French prep books.
Kudos to the author for the best book to prepare for the SAT II French test. Five stars for the only prep book with 10 practice tests, clear answers with detailed explanations, lots of grammar review, and a listening comprehension disc. Merci beaucoup!
