She is my teacher!!
This book is outstanding. It has helped me tremendously. Combine this book with a Japanese dictionary and you've got just about everything you need to excel in your studying of the Japanese language. Also, as an added benefit, she happens to be my teacher. She is an excellent teacher and one of the best teachers I've ever had the pleasure of being a student under. She exemplifies what it is to be a teacher. So pick up this book and look out for her next book, "Doctor In My Pocket."

Kodansha's Japanese Particle dictionary
I love this book! Whenever I'm in Japan, I carry it with me as I find it even more handy than my dictionary. Plenty of example sentences. Particles arranged in alphabetical order.

very nice book
I would like to say that this book is a very nice collection of everything connected with judaism. They have 222 beautiful pictures inside and if you are looking for anything from Aaron to Zohar you will find it here. I am very glad that I found this dictionary and I think you will too.

Very revealing!
I have browsed through this book and found things that were very interesting and revealing. I am proud to say that I have used it in my research for my own online book.

Maqiao Mysteries
This masterful and quite heady novel tackles the history of a fictitious town buried deep in China, a place protected by rivers and mountains. When a a "sent-down" worker from the city joins a group of urbanites, they discover a place that's almost a metaphor for Chinese life -- cast in reverse.

Han Shaogong guides the reader through the fictitious author's "dictionary" of Maqiao, which acquaints us with a baffling set of customs, and a people who view themselves as a kind of "Middle Kingdom," in which the outside world is shunned. The novel becomes an inventive expose of Shaogong's sometimes profound insights into the restrictions of culture and language in episodes that can be rigorously dry or unexpectedly moving.

The diligent reader will be rewarded. The depth and honesty of Shaogong's insights reach to the present day, and his small town of Maqiao is certain to leave a deep impression. This prize-winning novel is a dictionary that compels your interest and enjoyment..

Magnificent - fuses experimentalism and localism
This is an unmistakable classic: beautifully written by Han Shaogong and superbly translated by Julia Lovell. Anyone who feels fatigued with contemporary American or British fiction should read this for an object lesson in what is being produced out there, in foreign languages, and how important it is that we keep our translation market alive.

A Life Saver
I'm a college student, and I'm studying biology. This book is going to make my life a lot easier. I've already used it several times, and the definitions are easy to understand and straight to the point. This book will soon become my "best friend." One negative, though. The book is from 1997, so it might not be up-to-date on certain issues. Other than that, it will give you a solid foundation of definitions you can always rely on. I can't wait for the newest edition of this book to be released.

Great Book
Great! Every word I looked up was there, with an easy to understand definition.

Read a Dictionary Straight Through? Yup!
A wonderful reference! The book is well written and explains how many myths across the globe are connected (myths about a flood, the sun, the moon, etc.). Anyone interested in the study of mythology should have this book on their shelf. For the Pagan readers out there, while this is not directed at Pagans (in other words, you won't learn how to cast a circle, etc.) I would very highly recommend it to understand the mythology surrounding your particular path, and how it relates to other cultures. Just about every culture is given a place in this book--from the various Native American cultures (North, Central and South) to the Celts, Middle East, Asian, and many more.

Bottom line: A mythology lover's dream.

Librarian's Favorite
This is a very thorough, yet readable, book that I use all the time in helping students that come to our Library. It's amazing how many times I've used this book. It seems to span so many subject areas. I would recommend it for any reference collection that serves high school and college students.

One of the essentials
This dictionary should be on the desk of anyone seriously into object technology. It is an essential reference that allows the reader to use the correct terms when refering to certain meanings in different object languages.

An excellent reference
Clear and concise defintions of everything-you wanted-to-know about object technology but did not know who to ask. I've been using OT for well over ten years now and I think this book will be useful for both the newbie and experienced practitioner. Recommended.

Dictionary of Omens and Superstitions
Published in Hardcover by Book Sales Inc Remainder ()
Author: Philippa Waring
Amazon base price: $
Used price: $2.50
Average review score:

Very interesting book
Ever wonder why black cats are thought of as bad? Well, this book will tell you. This is a great book to have on hand. It's good to lok through, and then have ready when need be. Entertain your friends with alot of useless information. This book covers many different cultures, like French, english, American and more. Different cultures believe in differnt things.

Great book
A Dictionary of Omens and Superstitions covers more than 500 portents, signs, and customs from all over the world, mainly from Europe and America. It reveals the origins of many modern superstitions such as walking under ladders (The Devil and the Triangle), and such sayings as "pinch me" (sailors who had spent long periods of time were often mistaken for ghosts when they returned, and so they were pinched to prove they were real). This book is very comprehensive, answering many questions and giving fascinating information.

Some more things covered in this book are: birthmarks, chain letters, epitaphs, ladybirds, may blossoms, palpitations, robins, shooting, sodomy, tables, and weeds, among other common and uncommon omens. I highly recommend this book.

Too Much of a Good Thing?
This a comprehensive and well-written reference work with more than 1200 articles and 1346 pages. For the parish minister or pastor who needs guidance, this book should definitely be on the shelf as a mandatory reference work. For seminarians, it might be overwhelming, but would be a wonderful book to own. For more experienced religious leaders, pastoral counselors and pastoral psychotherapists, however, there is much here that can be gotten more easily and in more sophisticated form from smaller, more specialized books on theology and especially aspects of psychology/psychiatry. Still, it is an admirable piece of scholarship and one that most caregivers will want and use. (Non-religious mental health workers could also use it for working more effectively with religious populations.)

Thoughtful and useful dictionary
The Dictionary is useful for readers across a wide spectrum, not only for pastoral carers. Contains concise and practical information. The theological import of each entry is spelled out. Each entry has a bibliography for further reading or cross reference. I found myself browsing at leisure!

Dictionary of Patron Saints' Names

All the names are here for your new baby
A very comprehensive book of all the saints names you want to know and choose for your new arrival. You will be able to see the many variations and what they did that made them a great saint worthy of their name.

Tremendous Resource
Are you sick of pouring through the contemporary name books? Then pick up this treasure. Featuring more than 8,000 girls and boys names, the advantage to this resource is that it lists appropriate patron saints for most of the names, along with a very brief biography of such saints, the meaning of the name and includes the feast day for the patron.

For parents desiring to find Christian names for their children, this is an indispensible resource.

In addition to common Germanic, English, French, and Irish/Gaelic names, the book also features many African-American, Native American, and Arabic names as well.

You'll find such common names as Thomas, Anne, Susan, and David, as well as less common names such as Marva, Montana, LaShawna, and Moesha.

Where there is no appropriate patron saint for a given name, the book will examine the history of a name, break it down into parts, or find a patron that relates to the name's meaning so that very few names do not have a patron associated with them.

I recommend this book for any parent deciding on names for their children.
