This story is about Rebecca Whittier, the daughter of the captain of the Vigilance-a whaling boat hunting for whales in 1844. Rebecca wishes she was back home in New Bedford, with her friend and cousin. John Lowe is a free African American about Rebecca's age. John was indentured by his father to work on the Vigilance, but John hates the work. When a sudden hurricane hits the Vigilance and the lifeboats leave without them, Rebecca and John must help each other to survive the violent winds and waves. I think the other Survival books were better than this one. They spent too much time describing the whaling process and not enough time during the hurricane. It was still a better-than-average book, though.

I have read the book of SURVIVAL! HURRICANE.
I thought that it was the BEST survival book that I have read in a long time. This is such a good book that I couldn't put it down once I started it. After I read the first few pages I was into it right away. That was when I became a good fan of the survival books. Kathleen Duey and K. A. Bale are one of the best adventure writers that I have read about.

John Lowe, who is about Rebecca's age, was indentured by his father to living quarters dirty and cramped, and the work difficult. He, too, wishes the voyage to end so he can be back home. When the Vigilance is trapped in a hurricane and may sink, Rebecca and John find their lives in peril. They must help each other survive and save the ship. I loved this book

I've used this book as a reference on how to make clay tiles for roofing and flooring. It has other good tips on designing rooms, and information on making the furniture in the rooms. The furniture is way beyond my ability to make, but it's still a lovely book.

Venus and Martin Dodge have produced (what I feel) are the most beautiful books on the skills of making miniature scenes, dolls and accessories. My first project was the kitchen in this book. It turned out beautifully. I cannot stress enough how realistic their roomboxes are. Have a great time creating!

To start a dollhouse may seem discouraging for many people when you think about the time it takes to finish such a project. Here are the ideas how to do just one room box, but still create the atmosphere that you want in a miniature. This may inspire the beginner to really start with a project to try his/her new hobby, but it is also a great source for the advanced hobbyist to try for a real masterpiece. I can only highly recommend this book to everybody who is into 1/12 scale.

I have read most of the western fiction written by Louis L'Amour and found this collection of short stories intriguing. There is a diverse mixture of characters & scenes and you want to just finish a story as soon as you start it. I look forward to reading the other new collections of his works.

I found this to be a bit predictable, but still a very good audio dramatization. The characters were well cast, the audio was crisp and clear with great special effects and it played well in a car environment. Lance Kilkenny drifts into town (again) in bad need of a rest. But the town is anything but normal. Soon he finds himself mysteriously manoeuvred into a confrontation with the town marshal, but things are not as they seem! Well worth the purchase price. These recently discovered stories by the grand master of frontier fiction offer some of the most irresistible pleasure reading in any genre. L'Amour never wastes a syllable creating vivid characters, authentic settings, bull's eye plots, and timeless themes. Some readers might object to the now politically incorrect cowboys, guns, stagecoach robberies, and silver miners, but that's not doing justice to L'Amour's incontestable storytelling skills. Even if you're certain that you would never enjoy reading a western, give this book a try. You won't be disappointed

If your intent is to create music *by synthesizing the tones with a computer*, with a program such as Csound, this book is invaluable. It is *not about sequencing*, looping, controlling synthesizers or samplers with MIDI, etc. That said, the serious treatment of various types of sound synthesis is more than adequately technical, with lots of flowcharts, diagrams and a little algebra. The flowcharts illustrate generically how sounds can be synthesized, without getting into the specifics of particular programs. You must be able to leap the gap between the concept and the realization in a particular computer music program. Other chapters nicely introduce psychoacoustics, fundamentals of digital audio and the use of sound processing methodology. Warning: For a person with little technical (engineering-type) background, the book will be tough going in places, possibly overwhelming. It is not an introductory-level text.

I like this book so much!!! An invaluable reference for people interested in computer music composition with detailed explanation on digital synthesis methods, digital filtering, spacialization, etc... but what i like most is that in every chapter there is a section dedicated to compositional examples with very interesting info on structure, techniques, instrument designs... used in the development of each of the pieces. Also a chapter dedicated to live electronic performance. I love it.

It was a Christmas gift wrapped in bridal shower paper, but that's My buddy's sense of humor at work. "Truck" really struck a chord with me,as it will with anyone who has ever taken anything apart with the hope of getting it back together. One of those moments was when he'd reached the point of only being able to walk out to the garage and rearrange the tools,then go inside to have a drink and think about it. Man, have I ever been there. There are some similarities with Chris Goodrich's "Roadster", but Jerome is motivated by a sturdy thriftiness,while Goodrich had other issues to deal with. Great book, one of the best gifts I've received and a good addition to the "Auto as Metaphor for Life" section in a gearhead's library.

I've read the book five times since buying it, as the humor camouflaged some of the practical gems about rebuilding old trucks. A wonderful curl-up-before-the fireplace read!

It's much more than story it's an experience!

This is NOT a book for beginners; if you're new to Microsoft Excel, avoid this book! Even though the back of the book says it's a reference for beginning to advanced users, this book will confuse you if you're a beginner. It's a book for people who already have some knowledge about Excel; I'm in the intermediate to advanced user category, and even I get confused by some of the explanations provided in the book.

The book has lots of text, but it needs more examples and more pictures; I can't really grasp a particular subject on Excel, if there's no picture to show what it's supposed to look like on screen. Some of the subjects aren't explained fully; these areas need more explanations, examples and pictures.

The book gets four stars, because I did learn some things I've never learned before; also, the book's layout is excellent.

Like the one of the reviewers below, I suggest you get the "Microsoft Excel 2000 Learning Kit". The kit contains the "Running Microsoft Excel 2000" book, as well as a "Microsoft Excel 2000 Step by Step Interactive" software. The software in the kit is excellent!

Running Excel 2000 provides a very complete look at using Excel in most day to day situations. The general usage information is well structured and each topic is covered in detail.

For me the real value in this book comes from the section on analyzing data. The author discusses the worksheet functions but then delves into common analysis situations. Their coverage of financial analysis discusses all of the different financial functions and how to use each of them. The statistical analysis section talks about each of the different distributions supported and when each should be used. Finally they present a what-if analysis section that shows how to use Excel's solver and scenario manager.

The book even touches on Visual Basic, but only enough to get your feet wet with Excel's macros.

All in all a very good book.. much more than I was expecting from a general "how to use Excel" book.

I would recommend buying the package (step-by-step interactive cd + this book = $30 cost)

Great starter book for van owner

pictures need more detail; the small parts are hard to identify for the novice mechanic.

I bought this book because my '89 Daytona 2.5L N/A TBI was being a bit tempermental, and because I figured now was a good time in my life to start handling my own car repairs, within reason. While this book does do a pretty good job going over basic systems, troubleshooting tips, and so forth, the information regarding the 1989 models ('87 and '88 too I assume) is lacking. There is almost no diagram in the book that matches what can be seen under my hood, and that's a little troubling when you don't know where everything is by sight yet, or what the names of everything are. However, once I became more familiar with my own car, I could more readily translate the information specific to the '85/'86 models (which appears to be the concentration in this book).

Buy this book if you do any repairs on your own, for the simple reason that, even though it leaves a little to be desired for the late '80s models, it's the only good book out there.

The repair manual, Dodge Daytona and Chrysler Laser : 1984 Thru 1989 All Models Automotive Repair Manual (1140), is good for if you are doing most repairs. For someone who is interested in doing something that should be done by the dealership or professional it does not give exact descriptions. I found that with doing repairs that you would do at home it is the perfect thing.

This book has lots of great info.

This is a good book to keep in the car with you, so you have access to basic repair info at all times, although it doesn't go into real depth about how to repair everything.

There's not enough information about the problems that occur when certain "sensors" are not functioning properly. It seems to be a guessing game.

I just got done with this book, and I was satisfied with the information offered. I was in fact inspired enough to decide to take a shot in real estate investment. I just checked out a Real Estate Principles textbook from the library.

Unfortunately I had to do that because this book has very little in the line of DETAILS. Woodson does a fine job of hitting all of the main points of consideration, but leaves you with quite a few questions as to the HOW-TO of carrying out his advice. He seems very specific in the advice to get a broker, agent, professional inspector, property manager, attorney, etc. It's almost like he's trying to drum up business for real estate professionals as he is himself a broker. He even makes it sound as though the experience in the field is unattainable for most which I beleive to be untrue.

By all means, buy the book if you are new to real estate invesing. Good quality information, good readability, but a bit too much bias for 'the business'. Please vote if this helped.

This book is a fine introduction, although a bit basic, into the complex world of real estate investing. I was glad to have a no-nonsense, no-frills starter. The author wears his prejudice for a certain kind of investing on his sleeve, and explains every concept lucidly enough that even someone with no experience can understand every principle. There's a fine breadth of material covered too. I recommend it.

"Profitable Real Estate Investing:..." is a great book for someone who is starting out and wants to know where they fit into the big picture. Woodson obviously has experience in many different aspects of real estate investing and brokering and it shows.

I loved the little examples that are scattered throughout the book to help the reader understand different concepts. I have also read "Investing in Real Estate" and "Flipping Properties" and this is my favorite intro book so far.

I think Woodson took the right approach by not going too much into the "number crunching" that goes along with investing in real estate, he instead talks about different levels and stages of investing and what each has to offer.

I definitly recommend this book ot someone who is motivated to start investing in real estate.
