Teacher, Intellect, Poet and hero, Gary Snyder is for you!
Gary Snyder is an amazing person. He is an intellect. He is a poet. He is a teacher, a traveler, and he is a deeply spiritual man. He lives the life that we should all attempt to lead, a conscious thinking, methodical, contemplative life, asking questions arriving at conclusions and taking action.

The Gary Snyder Reader is a good compilation of his life's work, the variety inside includes essay, interview, and poetry. This book is a well rounded view of his feelings and belief's about nature, and that of the nature of the soul, the nature of man. I agree with other reviews written here about the power of Synder's writing. His is a strong voice which is able to make a terrific argument about everything from the history of the Christian church and some reasons for underlying social perils to making a call for more activism in one's own community. Make a difference, be responsible, see things for what they are, yes this is all there.

There is also the voice of pain, loss, suffering, anger, and very deep love. Above all else, one REALLY gets the feeling that Synder loves, passionately. Gary Snyder is an extremely talented writer and poet. The same voice that won the Pulitzer is still here. Do more than read and enjoy his works, read and be changed.

a primer for the 21st century
most of us first heard of snyder though kerouac's dharma bums. and i must confess that is why i was 1st attracted to him and his writings. but to list snyder as just another beat it not only inaccurate it does a diservice to him, his writings and his fearless intellect. snyder is not only a great poet but is also an insightful naturalist and a true zen master. this anthology is actually a zen bible for the 21st century, filled with enjoyable reading and great insights. these writings would make the soul of han shan dance, and sakyamuni smile. this is one of my favorite books. just reading it will lighten your spirit and make your soul dance with joy.

A word gardener sampler
Gary Snyder's power appears to come from mountain, meandering and meditation. In this thick sampler we visit his life to age sixty-eight through notes, prose and poems. The soil of his writings range across a fire lookout station in the Cascade Range, a Japanese Zen temple, the engine room of a Pacific freighter, an audience with the Dalai Lama, work and climbs with Ginsberg, Kerouac, Lew Welch, and Nanao Sakaki, travel in Botswana and Zimbabwe with his sons. The essence of his power is nature. "Nature is not a place to visit, it is home-and within that home territory there are more familiar and less familiar places." Two sons, one Pulitzer, many other awards so far. He writes, he reads, he teaches. One hopes that he never tires of planting words in the soil that is us. If there are any legitimate Earth heroes, Gary Snyder is one.

All the elements girls look for!
This is Amy Laundrie's fourth novel in the Kayla Montgomery Mystery series, and she again combines elements young girls look for---mystery, romance, and horses. Ms. Laundrie clearly knows the horse world well. Her writing also shines with lovely details when her characters are out in the natural world. And readers will appreciate the unusual twists in the story, such as a crisis in a reptile museum!

If you love horses and romance, this book is for you!
I had a great time reading "Lead Us Not Into Temptation." Kayla is a likeable heroine, and she kept me wondering what she was going to do. There was plenty of action, suspense, and romance to keep me happy. Read it!

Best Kayla Book Yet!!
In this book a new Thoroughbred racehorse is beeing boarded at her Aunt's farm. Fortune is worth a mint and someone is trying to kill it. Is it Luke's boss, Rob's room mate, or Mark Armstrong who was "outbid"? MOPAR or no car: a review of How to rebuild B-Block Mopars
How To Rebuild Big-Block Mopar Engines by Don Taylor is a very informative book. It covers everything from inspection of your old engine, removal from vehicle to disassembly and reassembly. Also includes proper cleaning techniques as well as machining recommendations. This detailed book includes casting numbers for blocks, cranks, rods, cylinder heads, intake manifolds and water pump housings for those who want an accurate restoration or those needing help with identification of parts. This book is more detailed about B/RB disassembly/reassembly and problem areas and tips to make the job easier than other general engine rebuilding books. Don gives step by step instructions on reassembly with plenty of pictures to help. This book will help the novice or experienced engine builder do a better job on his Mopar.

By far the best engine book I've seen
I have rebuilt many engines of many different brands, I have read MANY books on rebuilding these engines, and this book by FAR is the best book I have seen, It gives step by step instructions and it makes doing it SOOO easy, even if you have never picked up a wrench, with this book you can rebuild a Big Block Mopar. This book actually makes doing work fun and easy. This book is a MUST for any person who wants to rebuild a BB Mopar and build it right.

Must have book for "B" Mopar engines
I have not worked on cars for 20 years but then I bought a 76 Dodge Pickup that needed engine work. I knew that I would be over my head when I removed the valve covers. That is when I decided to get a book on Mopar engines. When I received the book I started reading expecting a book for mechanics, but what I found was a how-to rebuild a big block Mopar. It is written as if the author was telling you step by step just exactly how to remove, disassemble and repair the engine. He told what to look for and how to fix it. Then step by step how to re-assemble the engine and put it back in the vehicle. All of the while passing informative tips and a few tricks. The book helped me avoid several costly mistakes. It is a must have for anyone considering rebuilding a big block Chrysler.

Excellent Cookbook for Kids!
This cookbook for the younger reader is wonderful. This book is easy to understand, filled with many pictures, that not only gives recipes, but also teaches various cooking techniques. An excellent resource for TEACHERS
This book is an excellent resource for teachers interested in incorporating the use of study skills in their curriculumn. Unfortunately, it offers little in the way of advice for parents wanting to teach these same skills to their children at home or who wish to take a more active role in their child's education. Had I known ahead of time that it was teacher-oriented (and not parent), I would have looked for something more applicable to my situation.

A must have for all teachers!
This book has helped our fifth grade be more creative in all of the curriculum areas. Math, Social Studies, and Science are perfect for her creative graphic organizers which give the students a new perspective on their own work. We have also used her ideas with our writing program, and with our literature programs.

Study Skills for Students
This is an easy to understand and even easier to implement guide for study skills instruction at the elementary level. The strategies presented can be used in all curriculum areas and are easily adapted to the specific instructional goals of individual teachers. Students at all grade levels enjoy working with these study skills. Ideas like "The Sum-It-Up" and "Filming the Idea" are easily introduced to children at even the kindergarten level. The ideas in this book provide excellent support for students as they organize their thinking. The formats are particularly useful in preparation for the 4th grade ELA and Math tests. I look forward to additional suggestions from this author.

The Book Caved In
I recommend this book to any one who likes to read and have a cliffhanger at the end of a chapter or two. Also, anyone who likes historical fiction would like this book. One example is when the Coal mine collapsed in Pennsylvania in 1859. Also, I recommend this book to any one who used to work in the mines because it is very realistic. The main character, Liam, said, "You should never light a match in a mine because the coal dust is very flammable." Also, I recommend it for anyone who thinks that girls can't work in the mine, because they can do the same amount of work that the men do only they do it more efficiently. Liam said "he saw a little bit of mischief in Rory's eyes." Rory is a girl who subbed for Paddy, Liam's brother. I learned that the mine could be a dangerous place to work, not because it could cave in, but rather that your boss might abuse you, such as hitting you with a broomstick.

A girl must overcome her fears if she is to survive.
Rory Hamilton hates the mines that took her father and brother away from her, never to return. Now she and her mother make ends meet by running a boardinghouse for miners. Rory is friends with a boy her age named Liam Quinn who, along with his younger brother, Paddy, and widowed father, works in the mines saving money for his sisters to come to America from Ireland. One day Liam's brother gets sick and is in danger of losing his job if he stays home. Even though she is terribly afraid of going in the mine, Rory disguises herself as a boy so she can take Paddy's place until he is better. Rory picks the worst possible day to enter the mine, since it's the day of a terrible cave in that traps Rory and Liam underground. If she is to survive, Rory must face her worst fears. A great survival/adventure story set against a historical background.

UNDERGROUND ADVENTURE
This is a great adventure story with non-stop action. Being trapped in a cave is for some their worst nightmare. This is as close as most will ever want to be to going into a cave. For more underground adventure stories don't miss Steward's, "Tales of Dirt, Danger, and Darkness."

An underachievers guide!
This is a very unorthodox book and even though it was difficult to figure out what the authors were saying in some parts during the first read, when I read it over I figured it out. The approach is so different that you have to get into a "mindset" in order to follow their thinking. I liked the book and the ideas about leadership. I just wish I could find out who the authors really are and find out if they have written anything else.

Definitely 2 thumbs up!
These guys are nuts! I read the book twice and laughed as hard the second time as the first ! even if you don't care about leadership, you should read this to understand what we all have experienced at some time in our working lives.

Don't Dare Duck and Dodge this one, It is a must read!
I'm not sure if these guys are for real or not, but this is a funny book and worth the time to read it. I recognized several bosses I have had in their examples, and saw some things that I have done as well. It's not as easy as the authors would have you believe to figure out what the 'right way' to do it really is from reading this. I read it twice, but I think I need another go at it to get everything.

25 outstanding 1st year stories!
After finishing my first year teaching, I can relate to many of the stories submitted in this book. Each story is unique and reminds us why we have chosen to teach. It helps us first year teachers to understand that we go through during our first year is unique and the stuggle will help us be stonger and better teachers!

Fantastic Stories
I am currently enrolled in the business college at the school I attend but have recently grown tired of worrying about "maximizing the bottom line". Recently, I have seriously contemplated teaching in order to "maximize peoples' lives," which I find much more rewarding and important. With that in mind, I have bought a few books about teaching experiences so I can know what it is actually like.

This book has a collection of 25 stories related from first-year teaching experiences. The stories cover a spectrum of wealth, class and racial circumstances which was nice because it gives you a feel for the slightly different struggles each circumstance gives. This book gave me more hope that perhaps teaching is the road I want to go down. Through all of the trials, there is joy in the end for these teachers. I would be naive to think that the case for all teachers but if one is to teach, it should be to get a certain level of joy from it (I think).

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants a taste of first year teacher jitters and how it IS possible to deal with them. I only I hope that the teachers-to-be, in school today, deal as well in their circumstances as the teachers in this book did...it's a great book.

Inspiring
It's easy to forget what it is that makes you want to be a teacher. This is a book that reminds you. It is a collection of 25 stories, chosen from over 400 entries, told by real teachers about their first year. No two are alike - some are about particular memorable students, others about some of the hardships that are encountered as a novice teacher. I particularly liked one story about a first-year elementary school teacher whose problem was not his students, but his fellow teachers who were resentful of his success.

The sampling of stories in this book give a good idea of what kind of problems one might encounter as a teacher, yet they also describe how rewarding the profession can be. I am a student of education, and reading this book only reinforced my decision to become a teacher. For anyone who is thinking about teaching, or for veteran teachers who need a reminder of the importance of their profession, for anyone with an interest in education, I would recommend this book.
