The Great Silent Army of Abolitionism: Ordinary Women in the Antislavery Movement

Explains Emancipation
Julie Roy Jeffrey's absolutly magnificent book is must reading for anyone interested in aboltionism and the American Civil War. Jeffrey not only writes an excellent history of aboltionism and women's role in that movement, but she explains, very convincingly, why northern whites eventually would eventually support Abraham Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation.

Jeffrey describes how abolitionism in the north in the 1850's became "normalized" within many communities. In other words, the idea of freeing the slaves by 1860 was not some crazy idea. It was something that people had been exposed to for years. Jeffrey argues that this is largely because of women.

This book is one of the most important works on the war to be published in years. Anyone who thinks they understand the war without reading it is simply fooling themselves. This book has my highest recomendation.

A roundtable discussion in book form
The thing I liked most about the book is that it is a collection of essays from several authors who are experts in various facets of the Greek-Turkish relationship and represent different sides of the story. The authors were Greek, Turkish, American, and British. The issues addressed include, as usual, the effect of the Cyprus problem on the two countries, the impact of the EU, the role of NATO, border disputes, treatment of minorities, and Middle Eastern security. However, this book was not just a narative on the problems facing the two countries but also a discussion of solutions to easing strained relations and resolving problems in the Greek-Turkish arena. Overall, a nice variety of viewpoints and potential solutions.

Perfect selection of hard to find music and lyrics
I was looking for a book of oldies for a music program we were going to do and found this book on Amazon. Includes lots of Beatles tunes, Turtles, Mamas and Papas, and The Who. When the songs were performed, audience members were misty-eyed when hearing some of those songs from "their era". Some of the songs include; "Abraham, Martin and John", "California Dreamin'","Happy Together", "Wild Thing", and many more. Glad to have this book in my collection.

What life was really like one hundred and fifty years ago
Happy Incidents Along Life's Journey: Boyhood Memories Of The Civil War Era is the transcribed memoir of Thomas Smith Compton Senior, a man who lived through one of the most tumultuous eras in American history. Written down at the behest of his grandchild, these sparkling clear and vivid memories have been tactfully edited and presented to give a remarkable picture into what life was really like one hundred and fifty years ago. Happy Incidents Along Life's Journey is highly recommended and informative reading for students of American history and life during the Civil War era.

Higher Education in a Post-Binary Era
As one of the co-authors of this book, I naturally rate it highly ;-) But honestly I think it will be of interest to many people - from academic colleagues with an interest in how higher education systems develop and change in the light of changing circumstances to the more general reader who wishes to understand why there is so much fuss about a name (university vs polytechnic/college) in higher education circles.

The chapters making up the three system-specific sections are written by authors with different perspectives - one from the government/system level and two from the institutions' perspective in each section. These are well related to each other and the general theme of national higher education reform by the editor Prof David Teather in his introduction and conclusions.

I commend the book to anyone interested in how university systems develop and the responses of governments and institutions to demands for change and reform in higher education.

An excellent extension of Frank Reno's exploration of Arthur
"Historic Figures of the Arthurian Era" is Frank Reno's follow-up to his "The Historic King Arthur"... The work presented here extends Reno's explorations into the real world of "King Arthur" as found in the ancient written texts. It's a detailed, challenging book which should be of great interest to anyone who strongly wishes to better understand what lay behind all those centuries of legend and myth.

Yes, and Yes
You can judge a historical atlas on two criteria: 1) Is it easy to read? 2) Is it more informative than plain text?

Yes, and Yes. A truly dazzling work. Clear, concise maps with a minimum of unneded clutter make for a great curl-up-with (albeit clunky) book.

If you are interested in this period of British history, snag this book.

Austrian Nazis a new image of Austrians
One can observe the conditions of austrian Anschluss with Germany based on party politics, military take overs and repressive institutions. "Hitler's Austria" reveals the values and emotions that regular Austrians felt in having there nation become the first victim or collaborator. In these these eight years of German annexation feeling were elated at arrival and wavered toward the end. It is during this time that Austria's struggle to become an independent state as well as national mentality develops separate from the regulations imposed by a truely repressive, foreign regime. Austrians despite overt collaboration with Nazis are ultimately free from major guilt. Burkey effectively portrays a continual amniguity or even paradox in Austria reconciling to its guilt as a participant in the atrocities of Anschluss, World War II, and the Holocaust. I would recommend this book for anyone interested in modern Central European history.
