Hope is not a complacent wordBeing one of the people in this book, I know that Paul's use of the word "Hope" is parallel to "Faith" We are remembering our purpose here. Let's move forward with Love in our hearts.

The House Servant's Directory: Or a Monitor for Private Families: Comprising Hints on the Arrangement and Performance of Servants' Work
Published in Paperback by M.E.Sharpe (October, 1997)
Amazon base price: $25.95

Good household advice c. 1827The author, a black freeman and a prominent figure in Boston Abolitionist politics, published this remarkable work in 1827 not only as a handbook for servants but as a guide for proper behavior by masters toward their employees.
The recipes given are practical and detailed, and the editor believes "still useful today", but some ingredients may prove inconvenient, (bullock's gall) or downright dangerous (mercury) and adding live eels to a master's libations to discourage intoxication seems more a prescription for brief employment than a useful intervention.
Quibbles aside, Robert's work stands as a readable and useful view into an era little known to most Americans today.

Philosophy of HRM: Promises and CavietsThis is perhaps the first book on HRM in India, which seems to show that Indians understand HRM in the sense in which it is understood in the developed world. Most Indians equate HRM with HRD, which to me appears strange. Perhaps the best chapter in the Introductory one by one of the editors, Professor Debi S. saini. It was just a joy to read this chapter. The author clarifies the issues at stake with wonderful panache, and with a flair or remarcable inter-disciplinary sensitivity. His intertwining philosophical overtones in his analysis arouses immense interest of the reader in the term HRM and its components. The book also cautions about the dangers involved in HRM to the presence of pluralism in industry. Apart from the introductory chapter, I especially enjoyed reading Chapters 2, 4 and the last one. The book ends making a wonderful case for developing transformational leadership across the Board for HR agenda to succeed. The book is a must read for those who wish to have a scholarly treatment of HRM; and more so for Indian academics, managers and students.

A cross-section of wartime opinions and experiences.A dozen biographies of those opposed to or affected by Vietnam serve as the foundation for revealing how individuals were influenced by events of the times. Human Tradition in the Vietnam Era goes beyond most Vietnam books to provide a cross-section of opinions and experiences documenting the lasting effects of the war.

A fuller understanding of the tremendous war effortThe Human Tradition In The World War II Era is an informative collection of brief biographical sketches presenting the American experience during the second world war by examining the conflict through the ordeals of a broad array of men and women. Here are the stories of soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines who served in the European and pacific theaters. The Human Tradition In The World War II Era is divided into three major sections: The Home Front; The Government; and The Sharp End. Readers will appreciate a fuller understanding of the tremendous war effort mounted by the Americas, and gain a deeper sense of the war's profound impact on American society at large, and the lives of individuals both in the field and at home. This is very highly recommended, compelling, instructive reading for students of 20th century American history, culture, and participation in World War II.

Still the place to startIt's been fifteen years since "Battle Cry" first appeared -- and time has only enhanced its standing. The book is still the place to start for anyone seeking to understand the war era or, for that matter, anyone seeking to understand the sinews of American national identity. Some readers have taken issue with "Battle Cry"'s triumphant tone; recent books have tended to stress cynicism over affirmation. Still, McPherson's achievements here are legion. This new edition contains hundreds of impressive photographs -- most readers will delight in these, even if McPherson's original footnotes had to be cut in order to make room.

Authoritative reference.Anybody who wants a thorough reference with bios and the life's work of the most productive Hollywood directors should buy this book. Second edition should be done. From early days, the importance of the director to a film is shown with fine acuity by this author. Better than any one work you'll find in print or online.

A beautifully translated book of contemporary Russian poets'Zephyr Press, which gave us the superb Complete Poetry of Anna Achmatova, offers us a comprehensive feast of contemporary Russian poetry, with a fascinating introduction. The poetry is bittersweet, reflecting and expressing the soul of a nation changing radically from decade to decade. Many thanks to this hard-working, indefatigable small press for continuing to offer us these books.

reunified fieldKarsten Harries has so much to say it's easy to lose track what he's trying to affirm: the possibility of objective truth; the presence of God in the notion of the infinite; the presence of the infinite in the imagination of human beings; the dead-end subjectivity of postmodern thought. It's all here, a bit hard to get to on occasion due to the density of Mr Harries logic, but clearly stated and passionately argued. At the heart of Infinity and Perspective is the early rennaissance philosopher Cusanus, cardinal, politician, and theologian. Harries admires Cusanus for his ability to connect the real world to the imaginary and human behavior to divine cognition. That feels a lot like what Harries himself tries to attempt in this book: to find a center when the center has not held, and a defense of truth as spiritual presence.
