Breaking new ground
China specialists, and political scientists of any stripe studying "state capacity" would do well to check this book out.

Businesspeople or others negotiating with local governments may also want to have a look at the chapters describing the ways that the central government can curtail local autonomy.

Many observers of China have interpreted the decentralization of economic authority to local governments as representing a loss of power for the central government. In this book, Huang carefully lays out the objectives of politicians at the central and provincial levels, and the control systems available to the center. He then uses economic data on inflation and investment to demonstrate that, at least for this one aspect, the central government has in fact been able to use its political tools to rein in provincial leaders when necessary.

This book is exemplary for its careful generation of hypotheses, and testing of these using publicly available, reasonably objective data.

Excellent for the classroom
I am using this text in my Intro to PoliSci course, and it is great. The chapters are logically connected, and the focus of the book is on the international arena of the future. Students see the possible sources of future conflicts, and get a sense of how the political world has become "global".

Splendid little book.
The Jacksonian Era is a splendid little book of concise invaluable history. It addresses the major themes of the Jackson Presidency: slavery, the Bank War, the robbed election, Indian removal, and even dabbles into Jackson past, which is full of grand military victories. What many people fail to grasp is the fact that without Jackson's desisive victory in New Orleans, during the War of 1812, with the British, we may not have a perfect Union, or a Union at all.

Recommended for any collection concentrating on Japanese art
Japan At The Dawn Of The Modern Age is a specialty item which is recommended for any collection concentrating on Japanese art. Woodblock prints from the Meiji era are presented in a series of over 90 color illustrations which go beyond the traditional perception of Japanese subjects as gardens and geishas. These prints depicted current events and were painted in vivid colors, and Japan At The Dawn Of The Modern Age captures their vibrant spirit, along with history essential to understanding their meaning.

Japan's Reluctant Realism: Foreign Policy Challenges in an Era of Uncertain Power

an excellent book on Japanese foreign policy
This is an excellent book on Japanese foreign policy written by someone now working for the National Security Council. It draws upon on copious research including interviews conducted by the author, as well as Japanese and English language secondary source materials. Green convincingly argues that Japanese foreign policy is particularly driven by parochial domestic considerations, and in this respect the book is quite timely in light of the political changes occurring in Japan. I learned quite a bit from reading this book -- even regarding issues on which I thought my own prior knowledge was significant.

Jefferson Davis, the other American President in 1861
Jefferson Davis is the only American President not to be the President of the United States. In this excellent juvenile biography by Joey Frazier young readers will learn that Davis was a distinguished politician even before he became the first and only PResident of the Confederate States of America. Having grown up on a Mississippi cotton plantation, Davis was educated at West Point and served as an army officer. In the U.S. Senate Davis supported slavery and strongly championed states rights, which made him the perfect man to lead the South. Frazier also covers the years after the Civil War, when Davis was held in prison and wrote his memoirs after being released. Students having to research Davis for a class project will find lots of information in this easy to read book.

This book in the Famous Figures of the Civil War Era series is illustrated with historic paintings and etchings, although strangely enough the only photography is a contemporary one of a statue of Davis. I know there are historic photographs of him, but for some reason this series tends to shy away from such things. Side-bars focus on details such as the impact of the invention of the cotton gin on slavery and the attack on Ft. Sumter. Although these books always refer to their subjects by their first name, this is a solid series for young readers interested in the Civil War.

Joy of Jazz: Swing Era, 1935-1947

Author: Tom Scanlan

An honest appraisal by a man who loves his subject
Tom Scanlon presents an easy to read but unfortunately short review of the swing era from personal experience and expertise. Although the book contains (too) few photographs, the index, bibliography and recommended reading and recordings lists make it a valuabe reference book besides.
