What A Joy As Well As A Work of ArtNever before did I know a man could explain the heliocentric universe as well in this book. Of Course, Copernicus explained it centuries before my birth. But, it seems so foolish to believe the geocentric view, and I'm Catholic. Read "Dialogues" by Galileo to get the full picture of what these two men said, it it truly fascinating.

The MasterpieceDaniel Richter, in this astonishing book, does an excellent job explaining social, political and economical aspects of the Iroquois people with strong evidence. This book is a resutl of a big reserach and Richter's dedication to the subject. I would recommend this book not only to students who need to take Native American History, but also to anyone who is interested in learning about the Iroquoi's life and their impacts on the French, the England, and the Dutch in the 17th and 18th centuries. Even though i am not a native speaker, i really enjoyed reading this book because of Richter's plain English.

Analysis of social/economic factors leading to the civil war"Origins of Southern Radicalism..." traces the evolution of Upstate South Carolina from a frontier of subsistance farms to a cotton and slave dependent society preceding the civil war. It reflects the economic situation (supported by a surprising amount of data), the development of trading, merchants and towns, the religious sentiments of the time, and how the mixture of cotton, money, society and externally ineffective religious conviction led to disharmony and war. If anyone wants a clear window into the conditions and issues that led to our Nation's worst horrors, read this book.
"Origins" is academic in nature, and a "slow read". But, it needs to be in order to accurately document what was going in the decades leading up to the civil war. The book is built on primary evidence, and is as unfiltered a flow of facts and events as is possible. The author shows no Northern/Southern bias - just reveals the facts of the times. More than any of the numerous books I have read on the civil war, this one answers the biggest questions: "How was this tragedy of slavery perpetuated and how did this horrible war happen?"
There is a lesson here for all future generations concerned about human rights and the failure of politics to achieve favorable outcomes.

Highly ScholarlyI might not have purchased this book if it hadn't been included in a selection of bargain books from Yale University Press. The Acknowledgments on p. xv includes a comment on "My dissertation research in Paris." My use of the term "modern" in my reviews conforms to the sense which I observe on page 79 of this book. A cartoon at the top of the page, called "M. Manet studying beautiful nature," dated April 25, 1880, is followed by an explanation which "connects the extremity of exposed breasts to vulgarity and ugliness . . . by mocking any connection between this toilette and decorous feminine beauty." The painting which is then discussed, Henri Gervex's "Rolla," was abruptly removed from the Salon of 1878 for impropriety, but was exhibited by a private dealer for three months. Consideration of that painting in this book begins with "Another instance of a painting that displays female sexuality as something of a threat, and that locates this threat specifically in the realm of modern fashion." (p. 79) The painting was based on a poem by Alfred de Musset about a son of the bourgeoisie who squandered his fortune and committed suicide at the age of nineteen. The details of the painting are discussed to such an extent that minor elements of the picture become a great danger. "Indeed the lack of restraint that Gervex showed in placing the cain in the still life points to the vulnerability of the genre of the nude, to the ways in which the nude was almost always a strained synthesis of opposing forces, perpetually in danger of slipping out of equilibrium as a consequence of even the smallest push in the direction of deviance." (p.88) The discussion of that painting concludes with "Rolla drowned in the rising tide of sexual vice. The woman was the culprit, and Rolla her victim." (p. 93) Chapter Four's topic is "Suspicious Professions" and features pictures of working women, the intrigue being tied closely to the question, what makes them so cute?

A great book, which ought to be reissuedIt's a shame that this book is out of print, as to my knowledge it is the best book of its kind. Ayer critically summarizes each of the major strains of 20th century thought, from logical positivism to pragmatism to existentialism. Russell, Moore, James and Collingwood are covered in some detail; other thinkers, such as Heidegger, Sartre, Quine and Goodman, are introduced more concisely (but not neglectfully -- for example, I found Ayer's few pages on "Being and Time" very helpful). A participant himself in some of the philosophical debates he chronicles, Ayer clearly understands what he is writing about, and he is both able and willing to translate complex ideas into non-technical language. The subject matter is not easy, but Ayer's style is always enjoyable. This book ought to be reissued, but for now it's worth tracking down a used copy.

the story told thru its picturesThis two-volume work is the monumental collection of pictures of the american civil war. In total approx. 1800 pages shows us the soldiers from privates to generals and pictures from the battlefield, taken just a few hours after bitter fighting took place. The pictures also covers the citys and houses as well as other important place like rivers, harbours or mountains. The pictural record is accompaigned by text, written by important scholars. Originally six parts, the editors made two volumes of this work, which is highly recommended for any civil war buff, who wishes to see, what he's reading about.

Reads Like Fiction, But It's A True Story ! Excellent !!I've lived in Wisconsin for over 20 years, but never heard of John Dietz until I happened upon this book while searching the Amazon database. Anyone interested in U.S. history of this century, particularly big business/big government vs. "the little guy" will find this book fascinating. There can be no doubt that history does repeat itself: Waco, Ruby Ridge, et. al. are just late 20th century repeats of what has come earlier. I might also add that the book presents a very graphic picture of what pioneer life was like in the deep woods of northern Wisconsin, as late as 1910. Don't be too suprised if Hollywood makes a movie based upon this book about John Dietz and his family. It reads like fiction, but it's a true story. Well done, Mr. Landers!!
