One of the most powerful and moving biographies
You may have read many memoirs, and biographies about people affected by the Holocaust. However, do not think this is similar to other stories, or be put off by a topic that is upsetting. The journey through this book will be more than rewarding. Mary Felstiner has a deep, historical knowledge of Charlotte Salomon that she relays in a moving, and powerful style. You feel that you intimately know the people she writes about. Salomon's story is not one that is widely known, but it should be. She painted her life story during the Nazi years in the form of an operetta. Her paintings recently on display in the US tell a painful, vivid story of her, her parents, and her lover. This book is about what happened to Charlotte Salomon and her family during the Nazi years, but will also be of great interest to people interested in art, and in the human condition. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

To the Halls of the Montezumas: The Mexican War in the American Imagination

An excellent book in the Mexican War historiography
"Two thumbs up" is the simplest review for this historical analysis of the Mexican War of 1846-48. I read Johannsen's book for a class on U.S. Diplomatic History between 1776 and 1913 and loved it!! Johannsen discusses the image of the Mexican War in Americans' minds, not so much the military history of the battles. We get a better perception of America as a whole in 1846. Americans were living in an age of social and economic changes and believed that commercial pursuits were destroying the republican foundations of the new nation. To many Americans, the war with Mexico rejuvenated republican spirits and showed the superiority of the Anglo-Saxon United States against a "backward," supposedly racially inferior Mexican enemy. This book goes beyond the accounts of critics of the war, who argued that President James K. Polk and others were trying to extend slavery across the continent. We get a better sense of American reaction to the Mexican War and the changes the United States underwent during this era of "Manifest Destiny."

Tokyo Adventures: Glimpes of the City in Bygone Eras
This book not only provides you with very interesting half day and full day walking tours but it really helps when you do not speak a word of Japanese. It provides you with a comprehensive commentary on the sights and sounds around you as you walk along the wonderful streets or gardens of tokyo. Detailed maps that are easy to follow are included. It even gives interesting information such as the jovial, friendly and helful policeman who sits in a certain small police post - who is very willing to give you a short history lesson on the area around there , even though it is all in Japanese or the tiny shop tucked away in a corner that makes the best fresh homemade tofu or the oldest sake shop and on so many other wonderful things. You have a choice on which tours you want to go on depending on your interest such as gardens, old streets, temples etc. Thanks to this book - I had a wonderful time in Tokyo exploring many of its charms.

The Twin Era of Pakistan: Democracy and Dictatorship

Author: Abul Maali, Ph.D. Syed

Underground Bestseller Banned in Pakistan by Benazir's Gov't
The book is an interesting introduction to the subject of Pakistan's liberation from British colonial rule and a biting indictment of Indian flip-flop on the important question of Kashmir. Reading it one gets the impression that the author combines vivid memories of a determined Pakistani nationalist and the diligence and enthusiasm of an inquisitive writer. The work touches on all the issues that reverberate in the firmaments of political debates in south Asia. The author was definitely very well grounded in the history of the region and his familiarity with the sources was strengthened by his insightful analysis of the psychology of the human beings who were selected by destiny to lead south Asians in their battle against colonialism. Regardless of how one may think about his views on Pakistan and her struggles against India, one cannot deny that Dr. Abul Maali Syed is a definite contributor to the evergrowing literature on Pakistani nationalist historiography. His book will remain here as a living testimony that he cared very much about what happened to Muslim Pakistanis and did something about it by writing a powerful book.

A gift to the view !
This is a GREAT book, probably one of the few truly balanced views about the controversial war between the US and Mexico. It puts away many misconceptions and even myths on both sides, always increasing the reader's interest. The illustrations are simply AMAZING (many of them in color, a gift to the view after a day's work). We can even find some photographs of the troops in Mexican land, undoubtedly one of the very first examples of war photography.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in knowing what truly happened and anyone wanting to make a serious approach to the events of 1946-47.
