KUDOS TO MR. MORRISON!It is apparent that Mr. Morrison spent many long hours slaving over this book. It is well written, interesting, and a must have for civil war buffs. I only wish Mr. Morrison would write more books. It's heartwarming to see that Mr. Morrison credits his parents Al & Joan Morrison, and his siblings - Chris, Nancy, Jim, and Tony with the fortitude, intellegence and support to get this book completed. Keep up the good work, Mr. Morrison. I want to read more of your books in the future!
a fascinating book on the causes of the Civil WarAn incredibly well researched, well written account of the causes of the American Civil War! It's actually worth the high price!!!
A must read !!This book is remarkable. It is very apparent that Mr. Morrison did his research well. A must read for any history buff.

Excellent! A lesson for all. This book about the 1940s-70s in Canada surprised me.I had seen the documentary "The Un-Canadians" about the way the RCMP persecuted left-wingers but the book takes it much much further. A powerful look at how things went awry after people got scared of views contrary to their own.
A really fascinating oral history about blacklistingIf you think Canada is a boring place, try this book. This is a good read- a book which contains over 50 fascinating interviews with people who were blacklisted for political beliefs-in labour, the entertainment industry, teaching- during the cold war in Canada.Historians and children of the blacklisted also offer their take on the events. Even an interview with those who took part in the blacklisting. An eye-opener about McCarthyism in Canada.
Excellent piece on the blacklist in Canada.I loved this book. I was particularly touched by the stories of innocent Canadians whose lives were ruined by the Canadian version of the McCarthy era. Unbeknownst to many, the witchhunt was alive and well north of the 49th parallel.

Excellent resourceI could not have decorated my recently renovated 100 year old Victorian home without this book. Friends and family think I have great potential as a decorator, little do they know.
This book is so great it gives me goosebumpsI bought this book about a year ago and I still refer back to it often. The photos are so gorgeous, they give me goosebumps. They transport me into a place I'd like to live, a fantasy of design and genteel composure. The text is informative and the quality of photos is top notch. I highly recommend this book to folks who like Victorian design, both contemporary and traditional. You will feel the money was well spent!
Excellent pictures and detailsI found this book at a local library, I have went threw several books to get ideas on styles and of the victorian era. I found this one to be one of the best. It has wonderful, all color photographs, has a dictionary of old words and is wonderful for discribing details. I am going to purchase it for my own collection.

Great ideas!Originally I bought this book for scrapbooking ' great images. Then I realized why not personal greeting cards for birthdays and holidays?! And when a friend wanted a theme for a party, I used the images from the book for invitations, placemats, centerpieces, coasters etc. And I've only just begun.
Wow!If you like decoupage, get this book! I have already made two projects inspired by the pages. I am thinking about getting another copy of the book because I forgot to make color copies of the prints I used before I glued them down and I want to use them again.
Great book! This is a terrific book! There is a huge selection of art, and all of it is very high quality. I love the colors and there are wonderful ideas in the beginning of the book. This is a perfect companion to their first book The Decoupage Gallery.

Witty and Wise!I don't know what I expected but this is an extremely witty book. But it's also a very wise book. Stephens has written dozens and dozens of wonderful essays on some very remarkable women. I loved them all, but somehow I found myself lingering among those Controversial Curers and Ingenious Invalids! I must identify! Oh, dear, but then again, Charlotte Gilman Perkins is there, so what can I say? There are funny details, interesting facts, nice photographs and even quotes that will make your days pass by in sober reflection. Don't let the wit overwhelm the sober. A wonderful edition for ALL collections on women in history. Now if only I could get my hands on one of Lydia Pinkham's cure for PMS! You can find her grave online too. She was a marvel!
Humour does not take away from importance of factsThough written with wit and humour, one can only begin to imagine the amount of research that went into this book. The convictions of the women described within this tome inspire perseverence in those of us who are challenged by our individual goals.
The other side of the Victorian Lady...Terrific reference!I found this book fascinating, a quick sometimes shocking read. A feminist eye-opener with short, readable, to-the-point anecdotes of unconventional women's lives from primary sources. Also if you love historical romance, you will definitely love this book. ~Gaelen Foley, author of PRINCESS

Abraham Clark and the Quest for Equality in the Revolutionary Era
Published in Hardcover by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Pr (December, 1982)
Amazon base price: $30.00
Average review score:

The uniquely American struggle for equalityThis is a masterful study of the political and economic undercurrents of the American Revolution. Abraham Clark, a Signer of the Declaration of Independence from New Jersey, was an advocate for the middle and working classes. He fought against privilege in every form, often pitting himself against the most powerful, and wealthy, leaders of the Revolution. He feared that America would establish a country in which the domination of the poor by the wealthy would continue. He was also concerned that "new sources of tyranny" would "arise from American centers of power." His economic ideas and initiatives centered on "leveling the playing field" and are still worth considering. Most of his work was in this area, both on the national and state level. Called an "excentric genius" by one of his enemies, Clark's actions were extremely popular among the people of his district. He was held publicly accountable for every major bill which passed during his tenure in the state legislature. As a member of Congress, he was an ardent supporter of James Madison's policies and measures in the area of commerce.
It will make you re-think the American RevolutionThis is a masterful political and economic study of the Revolution, from the point of view of a Signer of the Declaration of Independence who was an advocate of the middle and working classes. It contains economic, social and political ideas still worth considering. Abraham Clark represents a proud and unique tradition in America in which the idea of equality is central. He feared tyranny in the form of the wealthy gaining power over the poor, and institutions over the individual. As the author states, he fought every form of privilege: social, military, economic or political. His economic vision and ability made him a major player in shaping our new country.

Lincoln in His Own WordsI purchased this collection of speeches and letters knowing little about America's most beloved president other than what I had learned in my high school history classes. My first impression was "Boy, where have all the good presidents gone?" Aside from the famous speeches we're all familiar with, Lincoln was a prolific man of letters and an amazing presenter of ideas ahead of their time. Our sixteenth president wasn't perfect, but neither was our nation. During perhaps the most crucial period in U.S. history, thank God there was Abraham Lincoln. I grew up as a Democrat, but if Lincoln were running for the presidency today, he would be the first Republican to get my vote. This Library of America edition of Lincoln's speeches and writings is a beautifully bound volume that I will cherish for years to come.
Leadership and EloquenceThis is the second volume of the Library of America Project devoted to the works of Abraham Lincoln. It covers the period after the Lincoln-Douglas Debates and includes many of the records of the Lincoln Presidency and the Civil War. The standard Lincoln materials are included, of course, such as the Gettysburg Address, the Emancipation Proclamation, and the Inauguaral Addresses. But there is immeasurably more. We see Lincoln writing to his Generals, Cabinet members, and other national leaders in his attempt to hold the Union together. We see a lincolns agonizing over military discipline and frequently pardoning deserting soldiers. We see Lincoln dealing with Indian issues in his day; and we see him supporting the use of black troops in the War effort. This volume is highly useful in uderstanding the Civil War. Equally important it teaches the nature of leadership and fortitude. Finally, Lincoln is one of our Nation's great prose writers and the book deserves reading for that reason alone. The Library of America is to be commended for this volume and for its ongoing series.

The Amistad Revolti would like to tell u that this is one of the best books ever wrote i wanted to thank you for this strong experence for me so i decide to write a poem i will get back to u on it because i have to get it copyrighted first thanks again
A critical approach to African and American historyOsagie's book covers all the things that have been glossed over in the traditional telling of the Amistad story: the stories of the Amistad Africans once they returned home, the generalized context of revolt and resistance to slavery at the time, and what the story has meant in Sierra Leone. She also has excellent critiques of plays, novels, and monuments about the Amistad incident, including Steven Spielberg's movie. It is a timely look at a popular story that takes the point of view of the Africans and Africans-American involved with it, instead of focussing on the white abolitionists and the court batttles. I very much enjoyed reading it.

First RateHistorian Don Nardo has produced another first rate historical survey for general readers. This one examines early civilizations across the world in the format of essays written by noted scholars. These include Chester G. Starr, Georges Roux, Seton Lloyd, Thomas R. Martin, Max Dimont, Paul Mackendrick, Michael Grant, and Nardo himself, among others. Each essay is concise, fact filled and easy to read. The bibliography is also excellent and will lead those interested to a wealth of relevant material. Also look for Nardo's other fine books about the ancient world, including "Life of a Roman Slave", "Roman Roads and Aqueducts", "Greek Drama", "Greek and Roman Sport", "The Rise of Chritianity," and "The Persian Empire".
Very Well Done and UsefulAs in volume 2 in this series (The Classical World, which I have reviewed separately) this is a wonderful introduction to the early ancient world, with articles by noted historians about the stone age, the emergence of the first cities in Mesopotamia and the first nation-state in Egypt, as well as on societies in other areas during the third, second, and first millenia B.C., such as India, Palestine, Greece, Italy, and central Europe (the Celts!). A time line and excellent bibliography complete what will be useful not only for students writing reports, but also as a reference text in Western civ. classes in high schools and colleges.

diving at its bestSimply, it was one of the most exciting and interresting books I have read in quite some time. From the time I got it I could not put it down. The pictures were great as they were in colour. A book I have read over and over and still learn. For books on the Andrea Doria it is quite simply the best. I wish there was a follow up to it.
a must for any wreck diver. great detail.A quick and excellent read on the dive history of the Doria. Scuba divers will appreciate Gentile's focus of dive information. Not loaded down with much pre-wreck history. But Great detail on the problems facing technical diving on the Doria.
