Overblown, overrated, overpriced psedo-history
This book is one of the worst I've come across about the Civil War era. The chapters on Lincoln will suffice in showing the overall value of the work. While some characterizations of Lincoln are on the money, the author completely and inexcusably overlooks the fallacies in Lincoln's views on slavery. For example, during the Lincoln-Douglas debates the author ignores Lincoln's view that blacks should be free yet shouldn't vote, intermarry, serve in the militia etc. The author also invokes too many times the worn-out cliche of the stereotypical southerner who wants to lynch blacks at every turn. Also a negative point in the book is the weird inclusion of a chapter on the myth of the Old West. The author strangely attacks John Wayne and Paul Harvey (!?) for daring to believe that individualism reigned in the Old West. Also the author exposes some liberal racism in implying that blacks and Indians don't need to "make it on the own." Pick up some other book on the Civil War and it will surely be worth your time.

Not very good
This work of essays about Civil War era people isn't well done at all. While some material, especially on Lincoln, is good the tome lags in many areas. For example, the author entertains the asinine theory that the Southern states were plotting to extend slavery into the North prior to the Civil War. Nothing could have been further from the truth. Also the author ignores the possibility that the reason that the South seceded from the Union was not that they didn't believe Lincoln's promise about not interfering with slavery but that they were afraid of loosing the balance of power in the senate. This scenario would have surely happened if slavery was prevented from spreading. Another example of how lackluster the book is the chapter on the Old West included for no apparent reason other than to provide the author an opportunity to needlessly attack John Wayne, Nixon, and Paul Harvey about individualism. The author contends that it didn't exist in the Old West but he is wrong. While certain things brought people together, most settlers were too far away to do this on a daily basis. This is a prime reason why the pioneers were such easy pickings for Indian war parties, outlaws, and others like them. General Sherman, who was in charge for the defense of the West for a time, stated this as a prime reason why the army couldn't protect all of the settlers. There are many more books worth a serious reader's time than this book.

One Star is Generous
This book is so bad, Amazon needs to come up with a NO STAR option. There are a stunning number of factual errors. Literally dozens, maybe into three digits. The author's grasp of the material is always superficial. I can't imagine a worse book on this subject. I know this sounds like hyperbole. It is not.

Caveat emptor
Read the review in the Spring 2000 issue of The Shakespeare Newsletter before purchasing this book. The review begins, "Briefly, this is so dreadfully bad a book that it, quite literally, ought to be withdrawn from publication" (18); the review amply substantiates this judgment in several thousand words quoting and describing the egregious errors in this book.

BENEDICT AND BEATRICE GET TRASHED
"BENEDIK AND BEATRICE GROW TEDIOUS" THUS SPAKE THE AUTHOR.

BLAME IT ON WHATSHERNAME-EMMA THOMKINS. HERE I WENT AND BOUGHT THIS STUPID DVD PLAYER AND NEW TV WITH THE S CONNECTION...AND THE STUPID DVD ITSELF.

AND I ACTUALLY ENJOYED - IF YOU CAN BELIEVE IT - THE FIRST AND I AM SORRY TO CONFESS - THE LAST SCENE BETWEEN EMMA AND THE IRISH ACTOR FROM BELFAST. AND I BOUGHT THE SCREENPLAY TOO. PATHETIC.

IF I HAD BUT KNOWN. IF I HAD BUT READ THIS BOOK.

The Ayub Khan Era; Politics in Pakistan, 1958-1969.

FALSE STATEMENTS ABOUT AYUB KHAN
This book is totally a book that contains history guidelines and it fails to focus on Ayub Khan as a leader. It merely just contains opinions about Ayub Khan without any justification. For all the readers out there, do not buy this book. Don't waist your breath.

The Claims of Culture: Equality and Diversity in the Global Era
Published in Paperback by Princeton Univ Pr (01 October, 2002)
Author: Seyla Benhabib
Amazon base price: $16.95
Used price: $15.09
Buy one from zShops for: $15.59
Average review score:

Unreadable and Laborious
Quite simply, this is one of the most poorly written books I've ever seen. Benhabib's basic points are lost in a jungle of jargon that appears to be written only for herself or for a very tight circle of over-specialized academics who share the same unintelligible language. Tragically, Benhabib's points about the evolutionary nature of culture and its fit within democratic societies are valid, interesting, and worthy of contemplation, but her writing prevents most people from ever grasping them. Simply put, don't buy this book. If it is required for a course, as it was for me, tell your professor to pick something else.

Nada recomendable.

The Macedonian Empire: The Era of Warfare Under Philip II and Alexander the Great, 359-323 B.C
Published in Hardcover by McFarland & Company (September, 1998)
Author: James R. Ashley
Amazon base price: $65.00
Used price: $26.47
Average review score:

Don't buy
This is probably the saddest study on Alexander the Great I have ever read. Ashley wants us - seriously - to believe Nearchos' fleet battled with Neanderthal men. A misreading of Arrian by the author has convinced him that Aristobulus was the son of the Indian King Poros. There are major and minor mistakes on almost every page. At the price of 60 US dollars, you should really look for a better book.

I'm sorry, but this is as it is.

Water Resources: A New Era for Coordination
Published in Paperback by American Society of Civil Engineers (June, 1998)
Author: William Whipple
Amazon base price: $39.00
Used price: $19.91
Average review score:

a very deceiving title
At best an introductory book for those who want to know what water planning is, but certainly not a book for professionals... A New Era for Coordination ?
Only the last two chapters (10 pages) allude to the topic.
But like the other chapters, it stays really superficial, and the few anecdotes don't bring much.
So for "those navigating the rapids of multiple water resource planning agencies..." I could recommend dozens of better books.

Even as an introductory book, it is really too shallow and superficial, topics are rapidly discussed with little, if any, analysis.

Finally and on top of that $40 for 100 pages, what a rip-off...

Not worth the price
If you really want information on the big bands, this is not your book. There is a lot of information on the sex lives of big band leaders but even more info on the slights suffered by the author.
Even the pictures are an attempt to show how important Bernie Woods was, including one of his golf foursome.

Real junk, poor quality - not worth the price. Look for a good book with quality images and text reproduction.
