The Eagles of DuxfordThe 78th Fighter Group is owed a debt of gratitude by all who treasure freedom. The guys of the 78th cut a wide path thru the skies over France, Holland, and Germany to stem the tide of Facism in WWII. The book is one of only two that I would call "definitive" on the Americans and the missions they flew out of the famed Duxford Air Field in England. Duxford was home to the Americans who flew for the British before America entered the war. Lots of data, pictures, personal accounts. If you have even the faintest interest in what some of our boys were doing in WWII you will want to get this book. These guys put the daring in derring-do. If you have more than a faint interest in the material you should already have the book.

If you like Hollywood name-droppers, this one is for you!Having just recently discovered Phyllis A. Whitney, I must admit she has conquered another loyal reader. A young woman almost conquered by a cruel husband flees with her son to save herself and her son from his cruelty. She runs to her great aunt's very secure fortress. But there she finds her safety in doubt as well as her aunt's, a former Hollywood star who quit the scene after her last movie entitled "Mirage." The secrets of the aunt's past coupled with the cruelty of the husband throws our heroine into many neat twists. The denoument is so very clever. As I read I found myself really getting into the mysteries of the star, but at the same time the tribulations of her niece were so complex and real. Once I started I had a hard time putting the novel down. Thank you Mrs. Whitney for some interesting reading while I sunned myself at the beach. I am ready for another installment of mystery and intrigue.

Ever the EagleThis well-told tale about a hero/fighter pilot and his family during World War II and the Korean conflict is accurate in the details, believable, understandable and well organized. It is easy to put yourself in the place of Tommy Chandler as if taking part in his adventures. Tommy is an admirable man with human weaknesses and desires. He lives in highly dangerous times and performs as we would like to think that most of our countrymen would in such terrible circumstances. It is obvious that the author is a patriot with high morals, and his research was thorough.

Healing the Broken EagleRecently I had the good fortune to meet Mr. Springer. We spoke briefly and he sold me one his books. The story the book tells is an amazing one of conviction, both moral conviction and criminal conviction. Springer details his anti-nuclear activities in the early nineties and the event which made him a hot topic in the media, the Reagan/broken eagle incident. He then goes into his unjust trial and the "degredation ceremony" of his incarceration. I found this book to be very inspiring and lucid, a call to the people to reclaim our earth from those that wish to destroy it. His expressions of compassion and forgiveness of the judges, correctional officers, Marshalls, Reagan, Nuclear proponents, and felonous, racist inmates that he encountered really shows how challenging, transforming, and wonderful it can be to walk the talk of peace on the planet. To quote the end of the book:
"There is absolutely no problem addressing humankind that we can't solve if we focus on the real issues. We can't do that from a place of denial. The words are broken. Look at the actions. The problem is not the solution, we have the solutions. This is the message of the Broken Eagle: that which is broken and heals is forever stronger in the broken places. In order to heal, we have to recognize that which is broken and take healing actions. Worship the real eagle, not a crystal one. It is time to unite the international nonviolent spiritual evolution."

A LOVING MEMOIR OF A FRIENDSHIP WITH MRS. ROOSEVELTThis short magical book, with 30 intmate photographs, does a great service to all who may have wished they had known Mrs. Roosevelt(The "Mrs.R" of the title). The author, William Turner Levy, reveals, in the affectionate telling of his longstanding friendship with Mrs. R, very touching and human dimensions to the already very detailed and historic portrait of Mrs. Roosevelt. It is through his enchanting and loving memoir, told through short delightful anadotes, that I gained new insights and perspectives into the private life and personality of Mrs. R. Indeed, not only did I gain nuance, I gained a strong emotional sense of who this woman really was. The excellent comments incorporated throughout the book of Cynthia Eagle Russet, a professor of history at Yale University, provided valuable historical and contextual insight into the significance of the role of Mrs. Roosevelt in shaping history and politics. I highly recommend this charming book to all those interested in Mrs. R and a part of American history coming alive in new and fascinating ways.

WoW!I bet no one has ever heard of this, but it's a keeper, especially if you're one for World War II novels. This seafaring novel has an exciting plot of a man named Ben Grant, coxswain of the British submarine Scavenger. After his commanding officers are killed by a German bomber, Grant is responsible for completing their mission and getting his crew home.
This story is different than any World War II submarine story that I have ever read. It's full of suspense and action and is sure to keep you on your toes.
*If you have a hard time with nautical terms and strange dialects, I wouldn't reccomend it to ya.

George Montgomery strikes gold in The Eye of the EagleAnyone who has ever caught a glimpse of a shiny fleck of gold in rich black sand knows how gold fever can drive a man to spend hours to weeks panning for gold in the hopes of striking it rich. George Montgomery writes of such a fever and the effects it has on the lives of the people in the northern Georgia town. The Eye of the Eagle is a fast paced entertaining novel as well as a historical account of the effect the gold rush had on the Cherokee tribe. It leaves you wondering if the tale is true, and if there may in fact be an eye of the eagle somewhere in the Georgia hills

Great Book on Celtic SpiritualityDavid Adam writes on Celtic spirituality from a biblical point of view, inspired on the old hymn "Be Thou My Vision", based on the Celtic Christian tradition. Every chapter begins with one line or phrase from this hymn, which Adam uses to develop his main theme. For those interested in Celtic spirituality, the book deals with issues like our relationship with God's criation, spiritual wilderness, stillness, fellowship with God, faith and confidence, God's protection, God's love, His presence, etc, which are the favorite themes of this tradition. After each chapter there are suggested exercises to help the reader experience the subject of that chapter. The author's purpose is to stimulate the reader to worship God. Among these exercises there are many prayers that Adam himself has written or colected from others and "tried and tested with small groups from his own parish and on retreats". David Adam is an authority on Celtic Christianity, and has written at least seven other books on this issue. He used to work as a miner and for over twenty years he was the Vicar of Danby in North Yorkshire. For the fans of the Irish band Iona, it might be intesting to know that their album "Jorney into the Mourn" was inspired by this pleasent and deep book.

An entertaining story from first page to lastEyes Of An Eagle is a fascinating and original work of science fiction in which Daniel Karpinen, a textbook and magazine editor, discovers the mathematical key to controlling gravity. What Daniel has learned brings both great change and great danger, as well as evoking mystical forces beyond his immediate comprehension which propel him on an inner journey tracing the ways of his ancestors. Highly recommended reading for "science oriented" science fiction enthusiasts, Eyes Of An Eagle is an impressively profound (even spiritual), compelling, and entertaining story from first page to last.
