A good book
It is not an amazing literary work, but it is fun to read, for adults as well as children. The entire series is well-written, and most deal with social issues. This gives children a way to relate to their world and form their own opinions.

Satisfying mystery - less satisfying personal characters
A body is found in a hole dug at the back of an old Rectory in a highly respectable London Neighbourhood and Detective Bill Slider of the Shepherd's Bush Police Station is called in to investigate. In fact the case at first sight seems astonishingly simple. Jennifer Andrews, the deceased, has been placed in a hole dug by her husband, a builder, to shore up an old terrace. Had Frances Hammond not been out walking her dog in her backyard, no one might have seen the body before Andrews had a chance to fill in the hole and bury his wife for ever. After all, he had been following her around all night - even threatening to kill her.

However there are things that just don't add up - why was Jennifer's handbag left in his car?, Why did Frances Hammond's dog not bark in the night when it heard the intruder dump the body and why did no one hear his footsteps on the gravel path?

Jennifer Andrews was no saint either - she had been having affairs, and who had she gone to meet the night before? - it certainly wasn't her husband. And what does the real-estate agent Donald Meacher have to do with this all?

I do like Harrod-Eagles mysteries but her characters of Bill Slider, his lover Joanna, Ex-wife Irene and his side-kick, Atherton just seem a bit cardboard to me. They don't seem to have real emotions - just reactions handy to creating a bit of personal angst. I found that side a real let down.

This is Harrod Eagles 7th book in the Bill Slider series (there are 8 of them so far to April 2001) and I'm not sure how many more there are to come. She does write a great and enjoyable mystery. The personal life doesn't intrude too much into the real story of the mystery.

Fun, in a crass, predictable way
I bought this and the two other books at the Navy exchange in San Diego's Balboa Naval Hospital in March of '89, as I began the third year of my first tour of duty. I've always enjoyed post apocalyptic stories, Damnation Alley, Mad Max and The Guardians being among the best. Silver Wings & Leather Jackets and its sequels are irreverant, highly implausible, stories of a young man living in post apocalyptic America on an 'air force' base when his father dies attempting to shoot downhis traitor uncle. From there, our hero gets thrown out of the academy, discovers a Marine weapons merchant who holds his legacy, and he begins his series long infatuation with a woman who views him as some form of cockroach. Its pure mind candy, but its FUN. Just imagine Beavis and Butthead writing, and you get the picture.

With Eagle Glance: American Indian Photographic Images, 1868-1931

American Indian Photographic Images
This catalogue is comprised of fifty photographs of American Indians. Primarily taken within the studio setting, the sitters are taken out of context and presented in a romanticized view of the American Indian prevalent of time. They are photographed in the confines of traditional portraiture which makes it seems as if the clothes, weapons, pipes and such are props. The plain backdrops make the images similar to a museum setting where such artifacts would be displayed, again out of context. If it is understood that these images are distorted and not a truthful account of the subjects, then the photographs can be appreciated visually as beautiful photographs and also for something other than they were intended for. Instead of being a document of the American Indian people, it becomes a document of the attitudes towards American Indian people.

Dream of a Falling Eagle: A Mongo Mystery

Tripping over his political paranoia again...
I've generally loved Chesbro's books, but in this one and in the Language of Cannibals, he prefers to launch political diatribes rather than worry about telling a story. Whether you agree or not with his left wing tirades that turn aging hippies and former communists into heroes (as in Cannibals), if you're fair and objective, you'll agree that his eagerness to make a point interferes with his normal storytelling prowess, and his paranoia becomes a Johnny-one-note theme. The entire plot, from the opening sentence, is a long, paranoid tirade. Read some of the finer books in this series like Rings, Shadow of a Broken Man, etc.

Mongo, voodoo, CIA and Republicans: They're all in this book
Not Chesbro's best Mongo book, but any Mongo adventure is a good read (at least for me). Substitute 1997 U.S. Congress and its majority leader into the political references, add recent headlines of dubious CIA activities, mix in voodoo, violent, gory deaths, and stir with Mongo and bother Garth in some near-death experiences. The result is paranoia, politics and adventure (not necessarily in that order).

mongo is always worth visiting
Mongo is one of those few characters who never wears thin. Chesbro's plots are always on the goofy-paranoid side, and this one is no exception. Don't get me wrong, the plot moves along and holds together, but one has to suspend disbelief immediately upon opening the book. But don't read this or any Mongo mystery for the plot, as fun and fantastic as it may be. Read it for the character, Mongo, and his brother and friends. There is no more likable character, detective or otherwise, in fiction. Chesbro's narrative voice is always pitched perfectly, and even if you don't buy his politics, you can't help but like him. Read it. Then go back and read them all

SAVE YOUR MONEY....
My advice to any beginning guitar player would be to aviod any book labeled as EASY. Most beginning players dont take the time to learn how to sight read, most only read tablature. The EASY guitar books are not tablature they are simply the melody line. Spend the extra money and buy the guitar recorded version of this or any other guitar book you have in mind.

Good book to get for a large colection of Eagles Songs
I've only been playing guitar for a short time (three years). I love the Eagles but haven't found alot of their music that was printed as it was played on the albums. This is the best I have seen. The short comings would be that it isn't in tab for beginners. It does have the chords noted above the staff. Definately not a book for early beginners. I would recommend it to anyone who has been playing for a little while and loves the Eagles music as I do. This book has ALL the classic Eagle songs....GET IT NOW! Feel free to email me if you have questions

Very good book with a few shortcomings
If you know what a chords are, this book is "EZ." I know my basic chords and found this book to be good. I wish they would put all words under the music instead of putting extra verses to the side -- "Takin It Easy" is an example of what I found frustrating. Overall, I found it easy to play and (IMHO) I sound good playing these songs.

Details, details, details
I am so used to Andre Norton using just the right amount of details to stimulate my imagination and then leaving it up to me to fill in, that I found this book very draggy. It wants to tell you everything and leaves nothing to the imagination. I have never read anything by Susan Schwartz but if this is her effect on Andre Norton's work I don't think I will. Sorry, I like Andre Norton's style. And, while she collaborates well with some people, I don't feel that this is one of those times.

Great potential ,disappointing delivery.
I think the subject matter is fascinating . However one cannot help but be somewhat disappointed by the amount of time spent describing ....thirst in the desert. I agree that tragedy and suffering are an integral part of this story......but only part. Having suffered through this morbid tale I was forced to finish the story because I purchased the book.

The scenario promised an exciting tale by a master storyteller, unfortunately the delivery was disappointing.

Fascinating read
Andre has strayed from her usual space epics and this is a thoroughly enjoyable read. I was unable to put it down and went from cover to cover in a little over three hours. The story is very authentic and adheres to the known history of the roman legions. I felt as though I was another of the warriors in the battles and the camps. I have almost every book that Andre has written and this one was another of her best.

The Naive and Sentimental Lover (Eagle Large Print)
Published in Hardcover by John Curley & Assoc (June, 1992)
Author: John Le Carre

uuuuuggggghhhh
The only reason I give this book one star is because it cannot be rated any lower.

I have read every novel authored by Le Carre and I rate him as one of, if not THE best writers in the espionage/cold-war genre. He is one of my favorite writers and I am fascinated by his ability to introduce a the human side to his characters and make you have compassion for them

This book however, may very well win the title of "the worst book I have ever read". I was unable to relate or have any feeling for any of these characters except for one of distaste, and struggled to make it through this book. I constantly wanted to throw the book away, but read on in the hope tht I would discover some redeeming quality ... none was found.

For readers looking to discover the wonderful collection of LeCarre novels, I would recommend any of the Smiley books and would warn all readers away from this work.

Painful
Over the years, I had read all of Le Carre's books except for this one. I recently decided to give "Naive" a try, notwithstanding the departure from a "spy" theme. Subject matter aside, which is a two man, one woman love triangle, the book is painfully slow. While I usually find Le Carre's character development to be compelling, and his books hard to put down, I had great difficulty getting through the middle of this one. I'd never before read one of his books and found myself anxious to be finished. I'm an enormous Le Carre fan--I think of him as my favorate author. Nonetheless, my advice is to skip this book.

Beautiful, memorable, surprising...READ IT!
As a Le Carre fan I was a little confused when I first started this novel - this is not another spy novel. Sort of like when you order coffee and are presented with a cup of tea: but then if it's the best cup of tea you've ever had, you soon forgive the mistake. The author was exploring an entirely different side to himself when he wrote this. I first read this book many years ago and it has haunted me since, and still rates as one of my all-time top 5. It is an achingly beautiful and involving story about three people struggling with themselves while caught in a love triangle. The power relations between the characters are intense and engaging. Read this classic story about the "human condition" and be amazed, entertained and moved.
