The perfect gift (for yourself!)
I've been a LEGO hobbyist for years, and I'm very excited that my teenage son is now more into it than even I am. I bought this book for him as a Christmas gift, but I had to give it to him early after I saw the incredibly cool robots on the front. We've now both read the book cover to cover (not a small task considering the book is almost 600 pages) and the ideas and information we got from the book could keep us busy for years. The great thing about this book is that it does not just give you step by step instructions on how to build a handful of robots, it teaches you how to build ANY robot that YOU can dream up. A big thanks to the authors for such a great gift!

The best Mindstorms book yet!
This is the most comprehensive book on building robots with Mindstorms yet published. It is mammoth (600+ pages) and has three sections. The first part deals with the basics, including chapters on such topics as walking, grabbing, and even a chapter on mathematics. The second section deals with specific projects. The final section discusses contests. The book is well written and even the math section is easy to understand.

Here are the pros and cons as I see them. Really, the cons exist by choice, as the authors chose to cover every imaginable design topic in detail and not use up space with programs or step-by-step diagrams.

Pros:

- Outstanding coverage of design principals, allowing the builder to learn concepts for building ANY robot.
- Lots of cool demonstration projects and plenty of building projects to work on, including a 2 legged walker!
- Open ended instruction lets you learn a design principal, then build and observe it.

Cons:

- No step-by-step building instructions and pictures. (Enough detail is provided by the photos that the models can be readily recreated.)
- Very little programming. (The authors' intent was to focus on the mechanical aspects of robot design. If you really want to learn programming, Dave Baum's book is a great resource for NQC).

This is it!
This book is hands-down the best guide to learn how to build and program robotic creatures made out of Lego. The book does not provide step-by-step instructions, but rather covers in helpful depth all aspects of the activity, from the purely mechanical ones to ways of programming autonomous robots.

Of course, the key to it all is not only to master these individual techniques, but also to choose the best way to integrate them to create execellent 'bots!. This book does just that. Don't take my word for it. Ask around in www.Lugnet.com - the premier international Lego fan site.

Ferrari
Ferrari, by Robin S Shoma, is an entertaining
book. Most of the cool pictures are about the
Ferraris, which is a car I love. My favorite part is when
the Ferraris are racing other cars.
I recommend everyone who loves racing and cars
to read it!!!

Did Yogi Raman know Dr. Stephen Covey and the Monk?
Robin Sharma does a masterful job of expanding on Dr.Covey's Seven Habits of Highly Effective People with his 8 Rituals of Visionary Leaders. As a certified Seven Habits Facillitator for the past 12 years, I found the book very stimulating and reinforcing to my Seven Habits practices and Principled Leadership. For example, Yogi Raman's Time Model for Visionary Leadership requiring Time leadership closely parallels Dr.Covey's Time Management Matrix focusing on the important/not urgent in leading a Quadrant II life style. The Yogi also recommends weekly planning around prioritized roles and goals. Again, I applaud Mr. Sharma for providing additional insights into my personal quest for achieving my Mission and Purpose in life. He also provides interesting perspectives that are helpful to me in my own "emotional intelligence" work as I advocate and teach Dr.Goleman's Five competencies of Emotional
Intelligence-Self awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy and social skills. I am recommending this work to all my friends and students who share the quest for a "life of service and purpose to make a difference"-"leave a legacy".

A Great Book for personal change!
One of the best books I have read recently! It helps you put back in perpective what are the most valuable and important things in life and how to find peace armony and beauty where it really lies!
Reading this book has inspired me greatly to love and take care of myself and therefore I have decided and implemented to quit smoking that was a self harming habit!
I hope it will impress and inspire you too!
Other books I recommend are the four agreements by Minquel Ruiz and Recapitulation by Victor Sanchez!
Enjoy your reading!

Cobra-Ferrari wars---Put It Back in Print!
I have been looking for "The Cobra Ferrari Wars" for many years. I am thankful for libraries and interlibrary loans. Only about 4 libraries in the country have this book. The story of Carroll Shelby's quest for the World Championship is one of the best in U.S. racing history. The information about the GT cars of that era, such as the Ferrari 250, Aston Martin, and Cobra is outstanding. The stories of the development of the Cobra and Daytona Cobra, gave me a new insight into the creation of these great racing machines. These stories are told from the point of view of the people who where there. This is one of the many strengths of this book. Another great feature is the race-by-race summary of every race the cobras competed in from 1963 until the final race of the championship season of 1965. Each race is told in the words of the mechanics, drivers and team members who were there and played a vital role in the winning of the championship.
The Cobra Ferrari Wars took place during a time when the U.S. had some of the best racing cars and drivers in the world. These cars and drivers won the biggest and best races in all of the major racing series. They won in F1, Sports Cars, and Indianapolis. We don't seem to produce drivers that can win F1, Le Mans or even the Indianapolis 500 any more. What happened!

I hope that the producers of this great book will come out with a second edition. I don't need to have a signed first edition. If this book was put back in print, more people could have the opportunity to read about Carroll Shelby's 1965 GT Championship. I can afford to pay $...for this book but not $...or more. This new printing would give more racing fans a chance to own this book.

The Cobra-Ferrari Wars: A Master Work Of Automotive History
AUTHOR MICHAEL SCHOEN was there when the Cobras were rewriting the record books, a fact clearly reflected in his landmark work, "The Cobra-Ferrari Wars" (CFW). Escorting the reader into the thick of the story from the very first page, Schoen eloquently describes the rare brew of ambition, focus and raw talent that propelled Carroll Shelby's youthful and capable team to the 1965 FIA World Manufacturer's Championship. At the same time, the author recounts the fortunes of other opposing teams, details the politics rendered behind the scenes by both Shelby and Ferrari and, perhaps most importantly, provides ample first-person narratives by almost everyone who was involved in the Cobra effort, including an impressive line-up of the great drivers of the day. Complemented by a wealth of evocative period photographs, "The Cobra-Ferrari Wars" stands head and shoulders above anything else in the motorsports history genre, and belongs in every enthusiast's library.

motorsport nirvana!
I have about every book extant on vintage motor racing--COBRA-FERRARI WARS is the best by far. The quality of the research is staggering, the photos superb--it puts you into the pits as American motorsports came of age.

A wealth of info for the Ferrari junkie
Another strong entrant in the "Original" series, with Bluemel's usual thorough research, beautiful and detailed photography and useful technical info for each model. This book covers the golden era of Ferrari's road cars. Impatiently waiting for the second V-12 book.

Wonderful Book !
As a Ferrari fan,I collect and read many books about Ferrari. This is one of the books that I feel I have got a lot of knowledge. There are more than 220 color photographs and detail introduction about the every car's chassis,transmission,wheel...etc.This book keep the same class of the other one:"Ferrari V8". So,I just can't wait for the other series books ! (Because this book just introduce the cars from 1965 to 1973 !)

Thin Skulls and Physical Injury

A boon to Plaintiff Lawyers
I am an experienced trial lawyer with many years of time in the trenches and I find this little book a gem in helping me explain causation, aggravation and damages. Buy it!

Finally a medical guide for claims adjusters too
Though I noticed that the subtitle of Thin Skulls and Physical Injury suggests it is for lawyers, it turns out I found this book useful in claims adjusting as well. It explains in plain English how wounds occur, how they heal, and what happens when our claimants for bodily injury happen to also have diabetes or other diseases that may impact on their recovery. The medical diseases are red flags for me to get medical advice early if recovery seems to be delayed, or to see if a different form of therapy will be more effective and hasten recovery. This is the first book that I have read where so many medical conditions are covered in a way that is easy to understand, without losing me in medical jargon. These thin skull cases do not come up that often, but often enough that I recommend Dr. Ferrari's book to any claims adjuster dealing with bodliy injury claims.

A good checkpoint for daily practice
Injured clients with medical conditions may have a number of complications that we do not see in most of our clients. The introduction of Thin Skulls and Physical Injury sets out an example of a claim gone tragically wrong because too many overlooked the thin skull of the client.

Ferrari's book is easy to use and reference. It explains how a given condition in my client might impact on their trauma outcome, but the book does this without getting into all the medical details, so it is straightforward. I use this book when I set questions for the client's GP or medical expert, or when I am drafting a statement of claim. Since I picked up this book, I make sure that every file is reviewed for a medical condition the patient might have, and then I look that up in the book. This is a good checkpoint for me to be more sure I am not overlooking any thin skull complications that my client deserves compensation for. If I spot something that may be relevant, I can then ask a medical expert to look into the possibilities further and provide the medical opinion and evidence that deals with the thin skull concern. This is a handy tool, and the first of its kind I have ever seen. I recommend it to personal injury attorneys as an inexpensive but very valuable tool.

The Absolute Authority in Taxonomy of Fishes
This book is a must for any Ichthyologist! An invaluable reference!

Catalog of Fishes
If anyone seriously thinks taxonomy is dead, let them review this masterly trio of tomes, each the size of a large city's phonebook. The authors have scanned the world literature to provide lists of all known scientific names for fishes--through about 1996--including synonomies, status, location of types, and other pertinent information. A labour of love that all ichthyologists will benefit from. Comes with a CD-ROM version that, alas, get 2 stars because its program code is too old to handle so much data without serious glitching. Indispensible to anyone doing systematics, biodiversity, or even legislation for fishes. Pricey, but well worth its cost in real, long-term value. Only question: How will it be ammended/updated?

A Diver's Guide to Underwater Malaysia Macrolife

A SURE WINNER WITH MUCK DIVERS AND CRITTER LOVERS
This is a spectacular book, and a very useful one for every self-respecting Indo-Pacific muck diver and macro critter lover. For ANY diver, in fact. On the cover it curiously says "Underwater Malaysia" But the inside actually covers a much broader area, from the Eastern Indian Ocean to the Western Pacific, so it's really helpful also if you're diving Thailand, Indonesia, Borneo, the Philippines, PNG or even parts of Australia. I believe this is the first diving ID guidebook entirely dedicated to small Indo-Pacific reef animals (ie those incredibly colorful clownfish, gobies, cleaner shrimps, nudibranchs and the like) - and what a winner it is! What makes it unique for me is the number of rare reef species featured and the amazing color photographs. I discovered a lot of new interesting facts reading the species' descriptions, which are very informative, pleasantly written and often quite amusing, and the reproduction quality of the photos is, wow!, absolutely stunning. Some of the critters (look at those unbelievable flamboyant cuttlefish or the mating mandarinfish) seem to be about to jump out of the page! As guidebooks go, this one is a bit heavier than one would expect, but it is also quite small and easy to carry around on a boat or in a dive bag, and despite being a paperback and not a hardcover the binding looks like it will be able to take quite a beating (travelling scuba divers will know what I'm talking about here). I'm sure as an identification guide this great book can be equally useful to the marine biologist and the advanced aquarist, but as a whole it's obviously geared towards those actually diving and taking photographs in tropical waters. OK, all this does not come real cheap - but in my opinion, considering the quality of the photos and the huge amount of information in it, this book is worth its price to the last dime.

THE BIBLE OF MUCK DIVING!
I bought this book a few weeks ago while on a diving trip to Borneo and immediately fell in love with it. This is the guidebook every discerning macro diver has been waiting for! After a long introduction and a funny, informative chapter on "the fine art of macrophotography" the authors describe in full detail more than 600 different marine species, ranging from invertebrates (nudibranchs, crustaceans and mollusks) to small and not-so-small fish. Every species entry features full, first-hand information on size, habitat, geographical range and life habits, and the book is chock-full with hundreds of absolutely stunning color pictures of the critters. Despite its restrictive title, the contents are in fact perfectly useful for any Indo-Pacific dive site, ranging from the Maldives to Papua New Guinea and Northern Australia. Some of the animals described are absolutely weird and are a fascinating first even for seasoned muck divers like myself. I cannot have enough praise for this book - it is an absolute must for any serious muck diver or photographer, and it fills to perfection an important void in the diving guidebooks panorama. It's also quite compact and not too expensive. From now on I won't take another dive trip without taking it along - bravo!

An absolute must for all Ferrari fans.
Even with all the other books on GP Ferraris I already had, I found that this one was essential. Most of the photos I had not seen before, and the human side of the team is particularly well presented. A nice touch is the section showing Ferraris at the same corner at Monaco every year over a 22-year span.

Watch out for prancing horse jumping from the book!
I got this book as a gift from Rainer's son Boris. It is the ultimate gift a tifosi can get - a complete 1950 - 1996 history of a team that is often considered as a synonymous for formula 1 passion. Photographs made in style that is very own for Maranello based team - red love, red faith, red blood of driver's like Bandini or Villeneuve for who red was the colour of their blood leaked for the belief of success. Rainer Schlegelmilch can be proudly crowned as a 'commendatore' of photography. He said it all. You'll never be a real formula 1 fan if you don't have this book! And I give five stars because I have it autographed... ;-)

An exquisite treat for Tifosi everywhere!
More than just a collection of truly exquisite pictures, this large-format volume -- in English, German and French -- covers each car, driver and season of Scuderia Ferrari's fabled GP history, including today's Maranello team assembled by Ferrari boss Luca di Montezemelo. As Niki Lauda's forward aptly states, Schlegelmilch's photography shows a "consistency of performance linked with the Ferrari virtues of brilliance and a finely-tuned sense of aesthetics." At nearly 350 pages (with several appendices), Ferrari F1 is a tour de force for Tifosi everywhere.
