Apocalypse When
I thought this biography was detailed mostly around this film. On page 262, first paragraph, I think Mr. Coppola would agree to mention the fact that "The Chief Phillips" made a life last attempt to end Willard after getting speared on the boat by Kurtz's mongrules. Overall, the book was a manificant biography of a Itailian-American film maker of our time.

A TOTAL mystery...
...and I hope he stays that way. Francis Ford Coppola is one of the inspirations of my life. His energy and enthusiasm for what he does outshines even the projects many might deride. One thing you have to say is at LEAST he puts his all into what he does, and I'd imagine no one would doubt this. PS: WHEN is the UNCUT version of "One From the Heart" going to be issued on DVD?

Schumacher got it right
I work for Francis Coppola today and know him pretty well. Michael Schumacher's book really captures the spirit and energy of this facinating and complex man. I have read most of the other Coppola books and none combines an understanding for both the human and artistic side of Francis.

This book, like no other I have read, reflects the passion, energy and chaos of the Coppola world. I can tell you from the inside there is no more exciting experience than being part of the Coppola energy. Francis loves to tackle the "impossible" and never gives up. I particularly like this book because it is clear that the author, like myself, has great respect for this whirlwind of a man.

The Garter Snakes: Evolution and Ecology (Animal Natural History Series, Vol 2)

An essential reference
For anyone interested in garter snakes, this book is the Holy Grail. Its chapters summarize a tremendous amount of work done on the genus, and make this book the one reference to consult first when doing any research on garters. It covers all thirty species, including many from Mexico and Central America for which data is limited and that I had never heard of before. I'm very pleased with it, and refer to it often.

But bear in mind that this a scientific monograph. As monographs go it is surprisingly accessible, but it does not pull any scholarly punches, and some parts of it will be beyond some readers, particularly children. The species key, for example, refers to measurements that no amateur or casual observer would be able to make, but it does so in order to be correct rather than easy.

That garter snake researchers need to own a copy of it goes without saying; amateurs with a serious interest in garters ought to buy it as well.

The only "must-have" snake book
There is far too much information in this book to be summarized in a review. Suffice it to say that the book is fascinating: the writing is clear, the conclusions sound, and the research extensive. For most other varieties of snake--other colubrids, boidae, vipers, even elapids--there is no shortage of books, and books covering even individual species are plentiful (think how many books are devoted exclusively to Boa constrictor ssp., for example). And while most of these books are worth reading once, the majority say little that all the others don't say, too. Garter snakes, however, seldom rate more than a paragraph or two in any snake book, and there are very few books devoted exclusively to garters (I can think of only one, offhand). This book, however, gives garters the attention--and gives the reader the information--that the species deserves. If one is a ratsnake enthusiast, or a python person, or mad about milksnakes, there are plenty of books worth reading, but few that are indispensable. If one is a breeder, researcher, or simply an interested layperson regarding garter snakes, however, this book is one that simply cannot be done without.

Any garter enthusiast will want this in their library
This wonderful compendium of gartersnake information is a treasure for lovers of Thamnophis. The color plates are wonderful, and the biological information is fascinating. Who would have guessed that some garters actually brumate (hibernate) in water? A great gift for any gartersnake keeper.

Motivational Therapy in Paper Back
This book has set me on fire! My late father Blair Reardon (an original Hot Rodder from the forties) planted the seed to build a Hot Rod in me when I was a child. Ever since I've known about cars from the depression era I have always wanted one. Now that I have the time and income to do this, I want to build a traditional style Hot Rod complete with the requisite flathead motor, Zephyr gears and Halibrand rear end to spin along a host of authentic vintage Ford parts. For me, the use of real Ford components, just like Dad scrounged out of the junkyard back in 1949, was absolutely essential. This platform, from the 1930 Model A frame I just aquired on up, will recreate a true, genuine Ford that will be brought back to life with cunning, resourcefulness and tenacity. This book has shown me the way. Chapter by chapter the text and images explain to the reader what it takes to build a true American classic. The parts, assemblies and period correct accessories required and the steps to bring them together are documented in words and pictures. As complete as this book is, you will need to network with other rodders all the way through the build of the car. The list of vendors in the back of the book will get you started on this network. You will meet new friends along the way as you apply your enthusiam. This book will take you by the hand, show you what you need and inspire the true believer to build. Bring your enthusiam and resources to the table, and this book will guide you through the rest.

Old Fords never die...they just go faster!

Rick Reardon

Should be called "As Good As It Gets."
I bought this book, then I bought a Model A. This is the only modern book I've read that can gives the reader a strait forward guide to building an real hot rod circa 1950. The correct wheel choices, banjo rear ends, Naugahyde! No Chevy 350s or billet here! Bishop & Tartel show you how the old timers did it, and then how to do it right.
I use it as a reference book and take everywhere. It's the basis for my A-V8, I couldn't build as good a period car without it. The pictures are captivating, the diagrams are totally right on. If I didn't feel as strongly about this book I wouldn't be writing this review.

Best of it's type
The Bishop/Tardel "How to Build a Traditional Hot Rod" is the very best book of this genre that I have seen.

It's chock full of good clear photos and captions that explain exactly what's going on.

As well as accurate measurements. Something not found in most other books.

It's apparent that Bishop and Tardel put a lot of extra effort into this book and you'll find it to be quite detailed.

Even if you're building a modern style roadster or coupe, there's a lot of valuable information in this book that can apply.

And at the least make you appreciate hot rod history in a manner not seen to date.

Bishop and Tardel are a couple of guys who have been there and done that and if this book doesn't make you want to start building a traditional hot rod I'd be surprised.

The Kayaker's Playbook!

Along with Bombproof & Nealy's book, one of the best!
I've been kayaking whitewater for about 5 years, seriously the past 2 seasons. I stumbled on this while on a visit back to the States last summer. It is clear and concise and builds on a series of simple paddling and 'awareness' excercises - as if a gifted 'professor' collected his/her lecture notes. No kayaker should be without this book, even if you're a pro, there's bound to be some thought-provoking new material here for you or a new spin on how to pass on techniques to newbies. Nealy's book ('Kayak') opens your eyes about 'reading' water and routefinding, this book opens your eyes about boat control. It's a gift, worth 3X the price...

This is a fine resource for both paddlers and instructors
On the cover of this book there's a picture of what appears to be a gnome with an atomic grin sitting in a kayak. The picture is the clue to both the book's underlying philosophy and its explicit message: kayaking on white water is fun. And the best way to have the most fun is to get the basics right. The book is unique in that it consists of nothing more than a series of well illustrated drills which are aimed at developing good boat control, and good paddle technique, so the next time you get on a white water river you can do whatever you want to do better. It's not aimed at wanna be rodeo stars. Text is kept to a minimum and the book is remarkably uncluttered and direct. Unless you're a champion slalom paddler there's lots here that is useful to help you refine and improve your technique and you don't have to wait til your next white water trip to get on with it. If you want to improve your paddling, buy this book. The authors offer a money back guarantee that it will improve your skills. If you've got a frend who's just started paddling, buy them this book. (And read it yerself!) If you're an instructor, especially a new one, buy this book. It's a ready made repetoire of drills and activities you can use to help your students improve facets of their paddling. For instructors it's also good on the little differences between the way racers and recreational boaters do things. Which given the authors' backgrounds is hardly suprising. (You might want to deduct half a star from the rating if you don't like yo-dude-speak)

Great resource for a training program
As soon as I found the laminated exercise card in the back of the book, I knew that this was much more than a book to be read. It was written in such a way that the info inside could go with me in the boat! The B & W photos are more than adequate for the purpose and Kent Ford never writes DOWN to the reader, World Champ though he is...A great resource and confidence builder

first time out, a masterpiece
The theft of a precious artifact results in a thrilling dual between the Australian Auborigines who owned it and the highroller who stole it to add to his collection. Beautiful descriptions bring the Australian outback and Ayers Rock dramatically to life. spellbinding! Based on authentic aboriginal belifs and practices. Read it. You won't be dissapointed

Stunning imagery, resonant characters, compelling storyline.
This tale simply draws one into the world of the Outback. I've read several fictional accounts of life among the Aboriginal peoples of Australia, but this one is truly beautiful. I read it in an afternoon; I simply was entranced with the lush prose and depth of character portrayed. I look forward to the next novel from this author!

High praise and two thumbs up for "The Keeper of Dreams"
This story is a real page turner, I couldn't put it down (very sticky binding). I really enjoyed Fords writing style, the way he developes his charecters and his attention to detail. I highly recomend this book to anyone who likes what I like.... (A good book)

Extraordinary book, blissfully beautiful
I spent days, after reading this book, weeks, imbibing and re-imbibing every syllable. I felt the kind of drunk, dizzy, first-time-in-love kind of love for this language that I hadn't felt for poetry in a decade. I've gone back and read it again maybe two, three, or ninety times since, and it hasn't lost its vertigos of wonder. It has inspired a host of imitators (Brenda Shaughnessy, Karen Volkman, Mary Jo Bang), none of whom are as brave or wild or awe-inducing. That an author so unprolific should inspire a whole new branch of writing bespeaks the importance of this book; poets who read it often feel that they've found something that had been missing from all poetries leading up to it, and afterwards everything they read seems predictable, emotionless, and linguistically flat. The last time a book came along that was this daring and this powerful, it was posthumous: Sylvia Plath's _Ariel_, whose swoops and deft gestures of language don't actually come close to those of _The Master Letters_.

Extraordinary
This is one of the best and most fascinating books of poems published in the last quarter of the 20th century. An extraordinary accomplishment.

Lucie Brock Broido is masterful.
This reworking of themes from Dickinson and other sources is sexy, intellectual, sentimental, unsentimental, funny, heartbreaking, and groovy. Lucie Brock Broido is one of the most talented and under-appreciated poets writing today. An example of brilliance: "was keeper of the badly marred, was furious done god."

Australian and South African Ford Telstar, Mazda 626
I searched everywhere for a repair manual for my Ford Telstar (Mazda626 clone). The book was particularly well suited to my purposes, as it described repair procedures in detail. As cars are more technologically advanced than before, I learnt a great deal and discovered features which I never knew existed on my car. The Fuel Injection section was particularly interesting to me. You learn exactly what not to mess with.

must have for a probe owner
This book is a must have for any 2nd generation ford probe owner. It has saved me a fortune on repair costs. well worth the price lots of pictures better than the chiltons manual.

Mazda/Probe Haynes Manual
The Haynes manualfor the Mazda/Probe vehicle is as easy to use as other Haynes manuals I have purchased for other cars I have owned. Pictures are of good quality and the instructions are somewhat detailed. I would defintely recommend a Haynes manual for any car.

On Writing Science Fiction: The Editors Strike Back

A great book for ALL fiction writers
The 1981 editors of Asimov's magazine use stories from their own periodical to illustrate some excellent points about how to write good science fiction. Do not worry if your stories do not involve robots and aliens, any fiction writer would find plenty to help here.

Despite the outdatedness, as the editors lecture on how to set your typewriter in order to produce clear manuscripts, using the short stories is a great idea. Even the stories' authors admit their work is flawed. Throw in a great bibliography and reading list, and some very funny observations from the editors about submissions (they are rejecting papers you typed on, not you personally) and this is a quick read and very informative. I highly recommend it if you can find it!

Key to the understanding of literature
This book is not only suited for people preparing their break-through as a science-fiction author. It
is as well suited for all who care about books and do not just simply want to consume them.
Instead of reading tons of boring theoretical papers on literature, those people should rather
consider reading this book. Besides a theoretical introduction, it contains commented short-stories.
A very good mixture.

The Insider's View of Publishing
After chatting informally with George Scithers a few times in the rec.arts.sf.written newsgroup, I decided to get the book and read the answers to all the questions that I didn't dare blurt out in the newsgroup, primarily "how do you get published! "

This book did a wonderful job of showing me the other side of the desk, of what editors are looking for when they look at manuscripts and how to ensure the story you tell is the one that they absolutely must have. (It's not a formula book; it's showing how to shape your story so it fits the -story's- needs, rather than a preconceived notion of what the editor wants.)

Highly recommended.

The Only War We've Got: Early Days in South Vietnam

Very good job
"The Only War We,ve Got" is an important book. I read it in virtually two sittings; so, it surely held my interest. I'm surprised I have not read about it elsewhere.

Like most thoughtful Americans, my opinions, feeling and prejudices about the Vietnam War have morphed a lot over the past 36 years. Presently, this book catches me right in the middle. The War provided much to be angry over but even more to be sad about. Truly, good intentions in the hands of fools (aren't we all) can be the cobblestones for the road to Hell. I hope this book will serve the folks who take George Santayanas famous comment to heart. However, I have seen in my lifetime the "best and the brightest" can be the biggest fools of all.

Very good job.

I really got caught up in this book
War stories aren't usually my cup of tea, but once I picked up this book I just couldn't put it down again. Maybe it was the "journal" style. But I really got the feeling that I was there with the reporter, traveling from base to base in Vietnam. Most books about the war give you the feeling of a filthy war fought in a rotten climate by men who hated every minute of it. That's not the war that Mr. Ford saw. In fact, he loved the country, and so did most of the American soldiers he traveled with.

Good photographs too. I would recommend this to anyone with an interest in how the Vietnam war came to be.

-- Bonnie

Did you ever wonder how the war began?
This is an amazing book. Before Vietnam became a household word, Ford bought a ticket to Saigon so he could see the war for himself. There were only a few Americans in Vietnam at the time, reporters and advisors and helo crews--no combat troops tho they all saw combat from time to time, including Ford. He goes on an armored invasion of a seashore town, slogs through the jungle with Vietnamese Rangers, patrols with the American Green Berets, and celebrates the Fourth of July by shooting up the Saigon River with a gang from the U.S. Navy.

Ford's Vietnam isn't the one you generally read about. He loves the country and admires the Americans he meets in his travels. They in turn love their work, at least the men in the field do. But between the lines you can see that things will go terribly wrong with America's adventure in South Vietnam.

Belongs on the shelf of every student of the Vietnam War.
