Good To Read With A Cup Of Tea
I find this book to be one of the best fairy tale books I've ever read. The illustrations are simply beautiful! The different plots and twists for each tale are interesting.

Multicultural before it was a buzzword
Lang was one of the first editors to collect multicultural fairy tales into one volume for readers. The Orange Fairy Book offers tales from many cultures. Included tales are The Girl-Fish, How Isuro the Rabbit Tricked Gudu, How the Stalos Were Tricked, The Adventures of a Jackal, Story of the King Who Would See Paradise, and many others. I have enjoyed the colored fairy books for years. Don't miss the great illustrations either.

Pendulum : the story of America's three aviation pioneers--Wilbur Wright, Orville Wright, and Glenn Curtiss, the Henry Ford of aviation

Pendulum . . . by Jack Carpenter
I have read a lot of books about early aviation and especially Glenn Curtiss, and Mr. Carpenter's book is among the best. It has been very helpful to me to put the entire chronology of the Wright brothers and Curtis and the development of flight in perspective because of the way he organizes his information. This book is most helpful when read AFTER a Curtiss biography, such as Roseberry's book on Curtiss.

A Different Perspective on Early Aviation
Pendulum is written for the serious student of early aviation history. Unlike most stories that focus on the Wright brothers' struggles before Dec. 17, 1903, this book delves into what happened AFTER Kitty Hawk.

In 1908 Glenn Curtiss won the Scientific American Magazine trophy for the first public flight in America. It was he, not the Wright brothers, who received instant fame and glory. He built and sold civilian airplanes while they focused on a single sale to the American, British or French Army.

The book explains how early chronicles touted Glenn Curtiss, not the Wrights, as the pioneer of aviation. Thousands of Curtiss JN-4 "Jennys" were used to train WW-I pilots. Today the pendulum has swung to the opposite extreme. Few people know of Curtiss, inventer of the flying boat and father of naval aviation, but everyone has seen the photo of Orville Wright's famous "First Flight" at Kitty Hawk.

In a sometimes dry account, Jack Carpenter meticulously compares step-by-step progress of the three men, with more rare photos than any other book. He tells how they were influenced by Alexander Graham Bell, inventer of the telephone, and Henry Ford, the father of mass produced automobiles.

Having studied the lives of all three men, I think Pendulum is the only book that gives an unbiased account of the bitter patent lawsuit that delayed the growth of American aviation for 10 years.

Possibly the best modern English rendering.
I compared this version to 3 other "modern" versions, including Hazelbaker's, and prefer this one. Other renderings all seemed to take significant liberties with the original text by either adding or removing material or, more often, by losing the charm of the original.

Written in a stone-cold jail cell above a river in 1670's England, Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress" is one of the great classics of all time, offering penetrating, spiritual insights relevant to all. It's been translated into 120 languages and is, as C.S. Lewis put it, "... a book that has astonished the whole world." It has stood the test of time.

An allegorical depiction of the journey through life, for many generations it was an integral part of the education of America's youth, helping shape the character of the nation. To a great extent, we are still benefitting from the social inertia provided by the spiritual insight it provided. It is a book that takes on new relevance each time it is read (which should be at least once a year), as you mature.

The language of the original English has a charm, but the "wilt's", "wherefores", "canst thous" and "came not nighs" can be an obstacle to modern readers. Cheryl Ford has done an excellent job of rendering "Pilgrim's Progress" in modern English while remaining faithful to the original.

Ford includes Parts 1 and 2 (some renderings contain only Part 1) most of Bunyan's margin notes, has a general index, exhaustive scripture index and discussion questions.

For those that want the original language as Bunyan wrote it, there is ISBN 0-85151-259-3, a beautiful deluxe hardcover with etchings by Strang and text based on the 1895 edition of Nimmo.

A very good adventure book.
This is the story of a pilgrim, who knows of the coming destruction that will destroy his city. None of his friends believe him, so he starts his journey to find a safe place. He meets people who help him along the way, but will he actually make it to his goal?

Buy this book and discover what this pilgrim goes through as he searches for a safe place.

An intimate look at America
Bill Allard's vision of America is that of intimacy and affection, it is evident that Bill has connected himself with his subjects, showing the warmth and joys as well as the pain and sorrow of his subject, Bill's strength is his ability to earn the trust of his subject from The Amish to baseball players.
His work with the Blues musicians are a powerful testiment to Bill's ideals of being near his subject, treating them as both godlike and human at the same time. I am priviledge to have attended a slide show of Bill's work on the Blues musician in Havana one fine winter's evening, not so long ago, and those images blew me away. A magnificent work by a master photographer, well done Bill!!

Great American Photographer
Though there have been many great photographers that have come through National Geographic, William Allard has likely influenced more photographers in the last 40 years of his career than any of his compatriots. His command of color, light and composition is extraordinary. His ability to shoot under difficult light condition and still produce a beautiful and stunning image is envied and respected. Though his unyielding committment to his work led him to an on again off again relationship with NG, the images that he has produced are a testament to his passion and vision. The book is a wonderful glimpse of the man and his work.

A great insight on sales force management
While other books try to teach the selling process, this piece of art helps you understand all the issues underlying in a sales force area, it's administation, the relationship with pre and post sales areas and the way to succeed in a managing position. One of the best books I've read on this subject.

A must-have book for undergraduate sudents and teachers.
I teach in one of the finest schools of Mexico, MBA Marketing and Field Force management topics, and was really tired of looking for comprehensive, complete and reasonable readings that covers the most important areas of managing a Sales Force. Churchil is a must-have text for both, college and high level (superior / undergraduate) students, since it really takes you through every important aspect of the topic.

Abundance of Evidence Suggests Mainstream Views Out of Touch
There exists a large number of scientific studies indicating that the reasonable and moderate use of alcohol can benefit as many as thirty common health problems, such as heart disease, blood pressure, stroke, obesity, diabetes, angina, and cancer, to name just a few. It seems that for various reasons the majority of mainstream medical practioneers are unaware of these findings, as well as mainstream thinking in general. A highly educated propfessor friend of mine for instance, who has a continuous problem with kidney stones, producing several excruiciating episodes a year, does not drink, and has not drank any alcohol for many years, was stunned when I showed him Chapter 21, on "Kidney Stones". The evidence discussed there in suggests a reduction in kidney stones of up to 39%, with only a moderate daily consumption of wine. In speaking to his doctors, none of them had ever heard of this before. This is only one of what could be thousands of examples of how, "The Science of Healthy Drinking" brings to light highly valuable medical information that the vast majority of American Physicans are barely dimly aware of. This book is an invaluable tool in bringing to awareness the positive benefits of alcochol to so many commonly occuring medical conditions as to make it basic reading material for every "student of medicine and health" regardless of whether they are professionlas or just want to be informed healthy lay people.

The Science of Healthy Drinking
As one of the scientists involved in the original 60 Minutes program on the "French Paradox," and as someone who directs an Institute at Boston University that carries out research on alcohol and health, I was delighted to see the new book by Gene Ford. I find it accurate in its scientific facts and balanced in their presentation; besides, it is very enjoyable to read. I would recommend it to anyone wanting to get information on wine and alcohol. It is nice to have such comprehensive coverage of the topic of drinking and health in one ready source.

Outstanding Explication of Christian Spirituality
As a practicing Christian and as a doctoral student in religous studies, I have read and perused a number of modern volumes on Christian Spirituality and I must say that this one is simply the best modern text on the subject. Ford's extensive theological and biblical background informs every word yet every word is accessible and plainly spoken. (Very much resembles C.S. Lewis in content and style). Anyone who is serious about their Christian journey should read and savour this volume. If you dare, it will change your life.

A Wise Book
Reading this book was like listening to a wise teacher in the Christian life.

An excellent historical document for all to read
Mary Darrah's book on Sr. Ignatia is an excellent historical document for all to read whether or not they are in recovery from alcohol or other drugs. This book is an accurate historical account of both the early days of Alcoholics Anonymous as well as the life of a compassionate yet tough woman.

This book is a must read for anyone interested in the truth about AA history. It is interesting, informative and enlightening.

Mitchell K. (Author of HOW IT WORKED, The Story of Clarence H. Snyder and the Early Days of Alcoholics Anonymous in Cleveland, Ohio)

This book was key to my understanding of how AA works.
In the early days of Alcoholics Anonymous, the recovery rate was about seventy five per cent. Today, the recovery rate is less than one per cent. In the early days of AA, 1935 to 1945, the founders of AA (Bill Wilson, Dr. Bob Smith and Sister Ignatia) operated under the concept that alcoholism was the indication of a spiritual illness. You first took away the alcohol, let the patient go through the withdrawal, and then they trained the alcoholic to be a spiritual person, both by learning to pray, (any religion would do) and then to pass your victory on to other suffering alcoholics. As AA grew, it began to be accepted in government run hospitals. And anything to do with the government has to have nothing to do with religion. So they began to treat alcoholics with psychiatry and downplayed the religious angle, hence the much lower recovery rate. Groups that use religion to treat alcoholics, like Teen Challenge, have an 80% recovery rate. When Sister Ignatia was helping to steer the recovery boat, along with Bill Wilson, Dr. Bob and the assent to Grace, recovery from alcoholism was possible for the first time on this planet. The other influence working against AA's religious methods was the birth, in the late 50's, of political correctness which fears surrender to religion (of ALL kinds) Reading this book about Sr. Ignatia has strenghthened my spirituality in AA. I just celebrated fourteen years sober.
