Supercharge Your Immunity
If you purchase only one health book this year, make it Supercharge Your Immunity, by Norman D. Ford. Ford describes his 18 immune boosters and explains how you can use them to help prevent everything from colds to cancer, naturally.

Our immune systems are our first defense against any type of illness and people with strong immune systems are generally healthier than those with weak systems. Medical researchers have developed many techniques for strengthening immune systems and Ford has "put them all together to combine the powers of body, mind and nutrition into a single comprehensive program specifically designed to bolster immunity."

He adds that his immune boosters are "do-it-yourself strategies [that] embrace virtually every promising natural therapy through which you can heal and empower your immunity." All the current natural techniques have been summarized and combined into groupings that maximize their benefits. Specific sections include overcoming insomnia, fighting off colds and infections, and defeating anxiety and depression.

Ford describes, in understandable layman's terms, what the immune system is and how it works. One chapter is devoted to explaining how cancer overwhelms the immune system, with suggestions on how to "cancer-proof your body." His immune boosters are divided into three sections: "Nutritional: Eating for Peak Immunity"; "Physical: Using the Body to Revitalize Your Immunity"; and "Psychological: Don't Let Stress Trash Your Immune System." Each section includes general background information, as well as specific suggestions.

He discusses herbs, minerals, and vitamins in the nutritional section, as well as presenting information about which diets work and why. Physical immune boosters include how to exercise for maximum benefit (overexercise can suppress your immunity), protecting yourself from sun damage, and coping with allergies. The psychological section concentrates on overcoming stress and depression.

All of Ford's tips are natural, and most are very simple. They are based on what Ford calls "action therapy." He says they "require you to use your mind and muscles to do what it takes to succeed in revving up your immunity. Action therapy requires you to take an active role in rejuvenating your immune system."

Supercharge Your Immunity is Ford's seventh book on natural ways to become and stay healthy. Those wishing to protect themselves from illness will find Supercharge Your Immunity invaluable.

Hilarious, touching riff on rare book catalogs
Rick Moody is one of the most highly regarded young novelists in America today (the New Yorker included him in its list of the "20 best young American writers") and, as such, his first editions have come to have value in the collector's market. Moody has taken the principal vehicle for selling such first editions -- the modern rare book dealer's catalog -- and created what can only be called a novella in the form of a dealer's catalog -- a hilarious and touching self-contained world, where the values accorded to the items for sale (i.e., dollars) and the values inherent in them (i.e., their significance, artistry, passion) are continually surprising and challenging to the reader and range from the sublime to the ridiculous and all points in between. Moody has his tongue in cheek at all times, but wears his heart on his sleeve, too, and many of these items represent or embody a kind of sensitivity and tenderness that this reader found surprisingly touching in such an essentially comic take-off. Anyone who has ever enjoyed reading a rare book dealer's catalog will find this to be an extraordinary trip -- familiar, odd, even at times haunting. (I have to admit that I gave people reason to snicker by trying to order an item from it when I got my copy in the mail.)

AN OUTRAGEOUS LITTLE MASTERPIECE FROM HYATT & DUQUETTE
Robert Anton Wilson says of "Taboo"..."I assure you that what you are about to read is obscene, lewd, blasphemous, subversive, and very interesting, and that all right-thinking people will agree that it should be banned, bowdlerized, censored, suppressed, and burned by the public hangman...l think it is safe to predict that almost every organized group of idiots in this country will regard this book as extremely dangerous." Wilson is probably right, Taboo's challenge to unite sexual and religious practices probably won't go over well with the New Right. But for the rest of us, the authors present a roller-coaster of a read complete with case histories, theories, and secret sex rituals of interest to both "adepts' of esoteric sex cult societies as well as "ordinary" people. Full of interesting quotations and anecdotes from alchemists, sex magicians, and vampires--not to mention old Yawey himself--this is a fascinating a colorful work that seems predestined to upset many people in our sex-negative society. Those who believe that taboos are made to be broken, however, should find Taboo and enjoyable and entertaining read....Leticia Marquez, Magical Blend Magazin

Amazingly vivid telling of a riveting story
Where history books place dry facts, dates, and seemingly distant, irrelevant stories, this book brings home the first person accounts of the brave and dedicated organizers of the Ford Rogue Plant. Spanning from the 20's to the 70's, these accounts are told in the words of a tapestry of workers, union officials, and politicians. The stories they tell are moving, riveting, and allowed me to actually understand whate really happened in the unionist movement from the people who were there.

The book focuses not only on what happened, but why. It takes a concentrated look at what was going on in America politically and the effect that each thing had on the move to organize. The format is clear and concise, but it is still very intriguing reading.

Everyone in America should read this book, and anyone who has any interest or membership in an American Trade Union of any kind NEEDS to read this book. It's what it is all about: freedom, democracy, power of the people when they stand united.

A unique introduction to doing theology
Although I have a Master of Divinity degree from a seminary and have been reading theology off and on for thirty years, I have seldom enjoyed a work as much as this short but fascinating introduction to the field. Every word is worhy of thought. For Ford, theology has to do with "overwhelmings" in life. Human beings can be overwhelmed by most any concern: money, sex, race, nation, fitness, youth, etc. But theolgy has to do with being overwhelmed by God. Using that approach, Ford then shows how Christian theology has talked about the Christian God (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) in the face of overwhelings in history. He shows how people like Barth and Tillich differ in their systems, but does so in a way that is really clear and helpful. He gives the classic response to evil, but in a way that does not take away the mystery of evil nor belittles the pain of human life. Within his discussion of evil, which he terms the dark mystery, he offers readers the mystery of goodness, the mystery of light. Both belong to any thoughtful discussion of life, and both come to focus in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. I for one will now read other works by Ford and will look for other titles in this excellent series of Very Short Introductions to interesting subjects. This is a book to buy, to return to, and to offer friends. Even people who never thought they would be interested in theolgy will find themselves responding to the questions Ford asks.
