More Than Complete Hitchhiker's Guide: Complete & Unabridged
Published in Hardcover by Longmeadow Press (November, 1989)
Author: Douglas Adams
Amazon base price: $117.00
Average review score:

One of the few books that make me laugh out loud!
If everone could see the world as Douglas Adams did, we'd all be better off. Mix dry British humor with a group of idiosyncratic characters, drop them into the space-time continium and you get non-stop laughs. At times I often found myself with a grin from ear to ear! Sometimes laughing out-loud!! Even a die hard science fiction fan needs a little bit of humor to keep a perspective.

Life, The Universe, and HILARITY
This collection of sharp, witty, and observant books merits a space on every bookshelf. I am VERY disappointed to find that it
is out of print, as the copy I have is a beautiful black cushioned-leather covered, bible-page style with gold page edges.
Needless to say, I'm preserving it as much as I can! Douglas Adams is one of my favorite authors, with his ability to make
human existance seem so amusing, and yet so futile at the same time. He takes life, gives it a large drink, spins it around a few
times, and watches what happens. Adams is not above self-humiliation either:

"The idea for the title first cropped up when I was lying drunk in a field in Innsbruck, Austria. Well, not really drunk, just the
kind of drunk you get from having a couple of stiff Gossers after not having eaten for two days straight on account of being a
penniless hitchhiker. We are talking of a mild inability to stand up."

I THOROUGHLY recommend this book to ANYONE with a sense of humor, a mind for Sci-Fi, or an adequately functioning
brain. Actually, all carbon-based life-forms should be exposed to this book at some point or another...

Enjoy... I know I did!

Why the Ships Are She (Stahlecker Series)
Published in Paperback by Four Way Books (01 May, 2001)
Author: Terri Ford
Amazon base price: $13.95

Fabulous!
Terri Ford's _Why the Ships Are She_ is in a total delight--all glee, wit, charisma and surprise. She's one of those rare poets who understands that humor and seriousness can, and should--really, must!--co-exist. There's not a pretentious or a sentimental bone in her body, and that means she gets to real emotions in all their complexity over and over and over again. I love her jumpy, skippy, tricky syncopating rhythms. Terri Ford has a great ear, a great heart--and writes great poems. Buy this book right now! You'll recommend it to your friends. And you'll realize all over again that fun is a wonderful, serious, poetic business.

.
Imaginative and truly original - as surprising and fun as the poet herself.

I Want to be Terri Ford
This book is heartbreaking and hilarious, much like life when you've got the right attitude. Ms. Ford certainly does. I reccommend this book to anyone in need of a kick in the pants. Ms. Ford treats words like tinker-toys and reminds us that poetry is indeed fun.

Wonderful Ways to Be a Stepparent
Published in Paperback by Conari Pr (January, 1999)
Authors: Judy Ford and Anna Chase
Amazon base price: $11.95
Average review score:

Stepmom Therapy
You may already be familiar with this little book for stepparents, but if not, you'll want to get a copy for now, and especially for the times when things get tough. It's an easy read with more than 60 suggestions for stepparents who are trying to learn, grow and thrive in their role. Called a "prescription to strengthen your family," the book remains hopeful and positive while understanding the challenges inherent in stepparenting.

The book is divided into three sections: Relating to Yourself, Dealing With Your Spouse, and Interacting With the Kids. The experiences and suggestions in each part are practical and encouraging. You'll respond to the stories with warm familiarity, or you'll wish they could be your own.

A couple of my favorite suggestions include: (1) Learning how to use -- and trust -- your intuition. Here, the authors encourage the stepparent to get to know her stepchildren and then to use that knowledge to improve the relationship and intuitively work through the problems that inevitably arise. (2) Solving problems with stepkids directly. This suggestions points out how much power stepparents actually have in getting their stepkids to cooperate with them. Following the advice here, it will be hard to tell who benefits more -- the stepchild or the stepparent, but it's a great way to approach conflicts for everyone involved.

The best of the best!
It's a tiny little book, but you will be surprised of its impact. I have been reading several books lately and some have been pretty good, but his little gem is just so realistic and helps one to be realistic in what is possible in a step parent relationship. Great suggestions, a pleasant read.

Wonderful!
I laughed, I cried... in the end, I was greatly encouraged to embark upon the exciting journey of stepparenting.

I would suggest that anyone getting married to (or even seriously involved with) someone with children buy this little gem.

And even though I'll be the official stepparent, I plan to have my fiance read it, too!

Wonderful Ways to Love a Child

Wise, warm and wonderful
Can you combine love and wisdom and deep insight while writing in a simple, inspiring style? Judy Ford has written "Wonderful Ways to Love a Child" in such a direct way that you feel warmed by her words at the same time you are inspired by them. I am so grateful that this book was written.

Jay Schlechter, PhD Author of Intimate Friends: An Antidote to Loneliness.

Kindness is always more powerful than fear
Ms Ford. will stress the same point over and over again from very different angles. If you want your raise your kid as a responsible, caring, inquiring, loving and lovable adult, you shall not use fear, cohersion and guilt as the tools of your education. Chances are that you will fail in a big way.

Rembember that children are independt beings who need your support and guidance, not your control. Be open to what they came to teach you and both will benefit in ways which no words can precisely define, since they will take you to the world of the spirit.

The author makes sure that every parent who reads this book mustr a clear understanding that feeling love is not enough you MUST express it.

The one parenting book to take to the proverbial desert isle
This is the best book on parenting I've read, and it's the one that's still by my bedside after more than four years' active duty as a mom.

It isn't another "here's what you do when they get green peas lodged in their ears" how-to guide. Instead, it's a gentle, guided journey into the heart of the parent-child bond: love, kindness, respect and caring.

Thank you, Judy Ford!

You Will Be Satisfied: Ford Motor's Top Salesman Shows You How to Turn Happy Customers into Fanatical Loyalists and Leave Your Competitors in the Dust
Published in Hardcover by HarperBusiness (December, 1999)
Authors: Bob Tasca and Peter Caldwell
Amazon base price: $23.00

A book that showed us what we should be doing
After the owner of our store read the book all employees read it . Then the owner flew to meet Mr Tasca at his store ,he spent 3 days there, wa sgiven the tour of his store, he spent quite a bit of time meeting with Mr Tasca and his sons talking about his philosophy and way of doing business .What a place !! upon returning we have instatuted The same 7 day return policy that Mr Tasca has as well as putting 3month 3000 mile waranties on our cars.it took some faith in our selves and our business to go all the way but we have and we have not regreted it one bit,, Great Book

How to sell with integrity and without lowering your price
This book, through anecdote and exposition, tells the reader flat-out how to sell, without violating integrity. It covers why the "lowest price" game is one you can not win. It tells what the customer really wants. While it discusses these topics in relation to selling cars, it explains how these ideas can be used in other industries.

When I first saw this book, I picked it up because the name was familiar, since I used to live in southeastern Massachusetts, and I wondered what Bob Tasca had to say. Now I know, and I feel that I got good value from the book. And that's his point, in part. But it's -his- book, so let -him- say it to you.

Would I buy a car from this man? You bet. (review from reading the hardcover edition)

The book for every dealership manager to read
Bob does a great job of showing his winning formula to build a successful dealership. Although any business person can learn from his book, it's a must read for dealership managers. I have recommended it to my dealership clients.

The Cinnamon Peeler: Selected Poems
Published in Hardcover by Knopf (May, 1991)
Authors: Michael Ondaatje and Harry Ford
Amazon base price: $19.00
Average review score:

A Beautiful Collection
The wonderful collection of poems that comprise The Cinnamon Peeler were written by Michael Ondaatje during a twenty-year period. They are works of deep intimacy and dazzling beauty.

Not being a poet myself, I enjoy reading Ondaatje's gorgeous poetry to my novelist wife.

More than love poems, these works contain wonderful twists and turns that are both painful and funny. Ondaatje has obviously turned to both Rousseau and Wallace Stevens for inspiration, but he also contributes his own sense of the novel and his awareness of social strata.

This is a charming book, with a muted sense of humor. With The Cinnamon Peeler, Ondaatje takes us deep inside his own mind and heart. It is trip worth making.

To understand Michael Ondaatje, read his poetry!
Michael Ondaatje knows how to write poetry. Primarily, he is a poet. Secondly a novelist. This collection contains a great variety of poems about day to day life, love, marriage, deep observations about children, humour, history and many more.

My favourite poem is ""To a Sad Daughter" which has a universal appeal. Once, I read this poem to my wife just replacing the poet's daughter's infatuation: ice hockey players with our daughter's hobby. My wife remarked: "Great poem. So you write good poetry too!"

I also like other poems including "The Cinnamon Peeler", "A House Divided", "Women Like You", "Billboards" and "Postcard From Piccadilly Street".

Michael Ondaatje shares his great intimate moments with us including love, his recollection of places and relationships with us. If you want to understand Ondaatje's prose, one must begging with his poetry. For anyone 'The Cinnamon Peeler' is an entry into a dark and deep labyrinth painted with human experience. When you come out of it, you'll be a different person.

This book is a one I read over and over again when I'm both sad and happy!

A wonderful, readable mixture of poems
Michael Ondaatje knows how to mix humor, beauty, sadness, and acute observation together to make lovely works of art. This collection contains a great variety of poetry, from simple and touching observations about his children, to deeply imagined distant moments of wonder. My favorite is "Pure Memory/Chris Dewdney" which actually made me cry twice for two different reasons when I first read it. I will say no more here. "Elimination Dance" is also a fun one to read out loud. "The Cinnamon Peeler" itself is a fantastic love poem. There is so much good stuff in this.

The Complete Basenji
Published in Hardcover by Hungry Minds, Inc (May, 1993)
Author: Elspet Ford
Amazon base price: $27.95
Average review score:

A TRULY BEAUTIFUL, EXOTIC DOG
This book is sure to delight everyone, from people who breed and show basenjis to the owner of the cherished pet.

A long established breed originating from Africa, the basenji is indeed a distinctive dog. Basenjis have deeply wrinkled foreheads, double curls in their tails, clean themselves like cats, run like antelopes and yodel instead of bark. They can also shed tears. Basenjis are known for their determination, loyalty to their owners and their keen hunting ability. Their cleanliness, natural beauty and gracefulness make them cherished pets indeed.

This book is a good teaching tool for folks who own basenjis, a good resource tool for folks interested in basenjis and certainly a well written wealth of information.

From the author of "August Magic", Veronica Anne Starbuck
An excellent resource on Basenjis for both the novice and the experienced owner!

Great history and health facts.
A must for a Basenji owner. The pictures are great, good tool to explain the African history to friends. The historical aspect is the most compelling to me, a good coffee table book unless your Basenji pulls books off the table !

Ford, the Dust and the Glory: A Racing History, 1901-1967
Published in Hardcover by Society of Automotive Engineers (February, 2001)
Author: Leo Levine
Amazon base price: $39.95
Average review score:

100 years of Ford, 30 Years of me reading about them.
I remember the original printing of this book. I read it many times in my elementary school's library. I found the descriptions of the far-off places like Monza, LeMans, and Monaco to be exciting, but no more than the famous US tracks like Daytona, Charlotte, Riverside and Sebring.

Leo Levine took me there as a child. I felt that I was bouncing across the Baja with Parnelli Jones in a Stroppe Bronco, testing at LeMans with Ken Miles, welding up a roll-cage with Holman-Moody, and mourning the tragic deaths of so many great drivers.

This book started me on a life-long love affair with motorsports, racing, reading, and Ford products.

Highly recommended.

Essential reading and great value
Wow. This is a fabulous story told by a skillful writer. The people and the technology support each other, and "Ford" as a theme takes the story through early racing, hot rodding, Indy, NASCAR, and Europe. The research that Levine put into the book shows, and he (or his editor) is skilled enough to know exactly when to step aside and let the source material tell the story.

And what a value! 640 pages for $..., compared to <200 pages for a typical auto racing book.

Flat Heads, Hot Rods, Muscle Cars and Le Mans!
This book was a terrific detailed history of Ford Motor Company racing through 1967. For anybody who loves fast cars, Fords and lived through the debut of the Mustang, the Cobra, and the GT40 that won at Le Mans this is a terrific read. A friend who is a car buff recommended it and while it took a while to get through (640+ pages) it was worth the effort. It also makes you appreciate the advance in publishing that have taken place since 1968 when this book first appeared. The pictures are grainy and don't do justice to the drivers, the cars or the author's fine writing.

The Quest for the Faradawn
Published in Hardcover by Delacorte Press (April, 1982)
Author: Richard Ford
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

a moving fantasy tale
I read this book at age eighteen, and then read it to my younger brothers. It is an animal story, and a quest, complete with elves, but it is more, too. It shows how animals may view us, the supposed Protectors and Keepers of the earth, but the message is not hard to swallow. Filled with humor and sorrow, this book made a lasting impression on me, and will be a permanent part of my library. One drawback, I felt the ending was an odd change of pace. If you like this one, check out The Book of the Dun Cow.

Faradawn and me
'Quest for the Faradawn' has always had a special place in my heart, because around twenty years ago, I was lucky enough to be asked to illustrate Richard Ford's wonderful fantasy novel. At the time, I had just started out as a freelance illustrator and 'Faradawn' was the first book I illustrated. I even called my house 'Faradawn!'Back then, I was using the Welsh spelling of Owen ( Owain ), but have now reverted to 'Owen', since returning home to Australia in 1994. It's nice to know that the book still has a wide and faithful following, after all this time.
Sadly, I've lost touch with Richard, but will keep searching for him on the 'Net. I feel sure that one day our paths will cross again, as magically as they did all those years ago.

Excellent!
I first read this book as a child and have since reread it. The magic only deapens with age. I intend to read it again shortly. There are few books that can hold my interest at all stages of life. This is a treasure. Enjoy!

The Fantasy Writer's Assistant and Other Stories
Published in Hardcover by Golden Gryphon Pr (June, 2002)
Author: Jeffrey Ford
Amazon base price: $16.77
List price: $23.95 (that's 30% off!)
Average review score:

Brilliant.
Again, Ford defies any and all conventions or genres and just does his thing - tell incredible stories that just leave you slack-jawed. Some are horror tales, some pure fantasy, and a couple sci-fi (more "fi" than "sci") for good measure, if they were to be categorized.

Throughout, the tales are dreamlike. but instead of drifting apart in strange directions, they have their own unique logic and cohesion, amplified by Ford's mastery of language, cadence, and pure style. This is one hell of a gifted writer who's following his own muse. I'd throw out a couple comparisons to other writers, but there are none that are even in the same "zip code" as Ford. Excellent book.

A Superb Collection
Those who have been following Jeffrey Ford's career have been awaiting this collection eagerly. Ford's reputation has grown with each story published. Each of his novels has established his place as one of the premier genre authors of his time. Finally, the magnificent Golden Gryphon press brings us a collection of Ford's short stories, a collection packed with grade A fiction.

Ford's fiction runs the gamut from the delicately beautifully to the wonderfully bizarre. The masterpiece 'Creation' explores a boy's relationship with his father against the backdrop of a man made out of logs he believes he's created in the forest. 'Creation' is a hauntingly beautiful story that is sure to be included on 2003 award ballets. 'Exo-Skeleton Town' takes place on an alien planet. The alien inhabitants are crazy about vintage movies, and trade balls of dung, which has aphrodisiac qualities, for copies of the movies. The few humans on the planet wear exo-suits (shaped to look like former film stars) to deal with the planet's atmospheric pressure. 'Exo-Skeleton Town' may be my favorite Ford story. Filled with lively and believable characters, magnificently odd plot twists and a touching conclusion.

'The Fantasy Writer's Assistant' tells the story of a best-selling fantasy writer who is losing his gift to 'see' into his created universe and turns it over to his assistant. The assistant learns that the characters in the universe are being exploited by the writer and tries to undo his damage. "Floating in Lindrethool" is a marvelous noirish story about a door-to-door salesman who tries to sell floating brains in a jar but inadvertently falls in love with one of them.

You get the idea. Jeffrey Ford is a consumate storyteller, a master of the written word. This collection doesn't even display the full range of Ford's talent. He has written exquisite stories not included herein, currently available in _The Green Man_ and _Leviathan 3_, that I strongly urge you to read. Whether you've read Ford's stories previously or he's a complete unknown to you, this collection is one that you must read. It's not only one of the best genre collections of 2002, it's one of the best I've ever seen. Highly recommended.

Brillant
There are wonders here and nightmares. Like Mervyn Peake, much of Ford's fiction seems to have little in common with day to day reality, but beneath the surface you will find more relevance and more wisdon than in most realistic fiction. If you are a fan of Peake or Borges or Gene Wolfe there is much you will enjoy here.
