The True History of the Elephant Man

Joseph Carey Merrick - the Man, the Soul
'Tis true my form is something odd
but blaming me is blaming God,
Could I create myself anew
I would not fail in pleasing you.

If I could reach from pole to pole
or grasp the ocean with a span,
I would be measured by the soul -
the mind's the standard of the man.

I bought this book many years ago, unfortunately I made the mistake of lending it to someone and I never got it back. This is a remarkable book. I was touched by Joseph Merrick years ago. For the past nine years, I have been running the Joseph Carey Merrick Tribute Website. It is a site dedicated to Joseph, the person - not Joseph, the disability. I'm presently heading a London and Leicester (UK) campaign to have a commemorative plaque erected in his honour. He deserves to have a permanent tribute. He has done a great deal to advance medical science, through his skeleton, and thanks to him, there will one day be a cure for Proteus Syndrome. It's time the world said 'thank you'. Please give your moral support by visiting the site. I'm not sure if web addresses can be mentioned here, so simply type the following in your web browser: Joseph Carey Merrick Tribute Website

Soul stirring and heart warming account of a young man
I inherited this book from a deceased family member. I had heard about David Lynch's movie about The Elephant Man, but I never saw it. Reading this book made me cry and empathize with Joseph Carey Merrick for his condition and the ostractize he received from the world based on his looks and not his soul.

Joseph Carey Merrick was the real Elephant Man not a fictional character. Joseph had a loving mother that died when he was a child and his father moved and remarried. His step-mother didn't like him and scorned him for his looks and his inability to find work due to his lameness, telling him that what she fed him was more than he earned. Eventually he refused to return home for meals because he didn't want to listen to step-mother barate him anymore. His father stopped looking for him, but did get him a hawker's license to hawk wares on the street. But people were afraid of him and would not buy his wares, and he acquired a gathering of curious people around him. His uncle gave him shelter for a while, but Joseph left there too. He worked in the workhouse a place of refuge and work for the poor and destitute for 3 years, but hated it and left. He ended up being exhibited as a sideshow freak under the name of "The Elephant Man" because his congenital deformity made it so that he resemble that of an elephant (or so the posters showed him to resemble). When he was at Whitechapel Road, across the street from the London Hospital Dr. Treves saw him for the first time and brought him to the hospital to examine him. Over the next few years Joseph was exhibited, his managers robbed him of his life savings and left. Joseph went back to Whitechapel Road and to the care of the only friend he knew . . . Dr. Treves. He spent his remaining years under the friendship and care of the staff at the London Hospital.

I loved this story. Michael Howell and Peter Ford told a true and compassionate account of Joseph Merrick's life. A man who was like any other human being with hopes and dreams with one setback.. His congenital deformity that prohibited his ability to be like, and experience and sleep lying down on his back like other people. Through all of years and hardships, Joseph was scared, but kind and kept a calm serenity inside himself about his condition. He had so much gratitude for the staff and his new friends who helped him, he made cardboard models and sent these things to those people who saw to his care in his appreciation for their help. The book also includes pictures how Merrick looked when he was admitted to the London Hospital, and a display of his skeleton after death.

The True History of the Elephant Man
I first read the original article on the elephant man Joseph Merrick by Dr Treves in a magazine in the mid 1970s. I then saw the movie in 1980. The movie peaked my interest for further info so I bought the book. The book not only goes into extensive detail of the disease but goes also extensively into Joseph Merrick's life as well as life in the Victorian era as it effected the common man. The imagery of the period was brought out by the writers: the London Hospital, the surrounding area, the showmen and their lives, etc. The research was very detailed, although later after the book's publication we learned of the possibility that Merrick suffered from Proteus and not pneumofibromatosis. This book should be read by anybody interested in these diseases as well as anybody interested in this time period.

Sidekick
An interesting companion to some of the bios now appearing about John Ford. Carey first met Ford when his father worked with Ford in silent movies and grew up with Uncle Jack to have a movie career of his own. Some good behind the scene color to a man of prodigious talent and personality faults.

Probably my Favorite Book on Ford
There have been a lot of books on John Ford, and I hope there are many more, because I think he was the greatest American director there ever was, or will be. He created unforgettable images, tales of strength and tenderness, and characters that we never forget. His best movies remain with you over the years. "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" is a movie that you appreciate more as you get older. Harry Carey's book gives you a view of Ford, in all his tyranny and tenderness, that you're simply not going to find anywhere else. He also has great stories about the early great western stars: William S. Hart, Harry Carey, Sr., and Hoot Gibson. Read it if you're a Ford fan!

Outstanding!
A really fine book by someone who has a true appreciation for the giants he worked with. Mr. Carey is a wonderful story teller, sensitive with a good sense of humor. His observations make for what may be the best book about John Ford ever written. But it is Dobe Carey's depiction of all the greats who worked for Ford that makes this book special indeed. They were unique and wonderful screen icons, the likes of which we will never see again. Mr. Carey brings them to life again in a way I shall never forget. Do not miss this book!

I loved it!!
This was my very first novel by Ford and for my first reading of her work I was blown away! I love her writing style. Ford is up there with my favorites. Characters that anyone can fall in love with. I loved the storyline. Diana and Charles are hot together. Get a load of those love scenes! A must, must, must read!!Much love Ford!

Lies, Trust and Love
This is one of Bette Ford's best books. We were first introduced to Diane and Charles in her novel For Always. The two were best friends until Charles wanted more than a friendship with Diane. He wanted her to be his one and only lover. Because of prior life experiences she turned him down.

Now she has come to grips that Charles is who she wants to be with and she follows him on a cruise. At first he is not happy that she is there but after talking to one another he opens his heart to her and they are later married.

There is a lot of drama throughout this book and Bette did an excellant job bringing everything together. This is a true page turner that you will not want to put down until it is done.

We are also introduced to Anthia and Dexter who stars in her book One of a Kind.

"Forever After" Another Good Ford Book!
I am on this re-read all of Bette Ford book week! I read this book last year but after re-reading it decided to input some comments. I have said this in a previous review that Ms. Ford is the only author I know who can write some serious hot initimate scenes that include good plots. I mean the main characters, Charles Randol and Diane Rivers, both work at the same high school. Charles has the opinion of Diane that she flirts with men too much and it actually angers Charles and that's because he really loves her. But this story is more than just the hot initimate scenes, its about letting go of your past, how the past affects your present everyday life, the difficulities a person has in trusting their feelings to someone else, dealing with jealousy and trust. These are just some of the issues that this couple had to deal with throughout this book. But the author wants us to see just what these things can do to a relationship and how it gets resolved. Now Ms. Ford is gifted my fellow readers, she can give you a great storyline with some of the best hot loving scenes to not bore you. If you think these kinds of stories are of interest to you, then check out some of her other published books. **All The Love, For Always and After Dark**

How to Spot a Phony Resume

A terrific countermeasure
As an employer, I can say with no reservation that this is one very useful book. Trying to hire the right people has been a headache for me for years, but with this book, I can get rid of the phonies right up front. It really is effective, showing how to see things that don't make sense right away, and how to quickly check suspicious entries. If you hire people, you will find this book a good resource.

VERY helpful! Every hiring manager should have it.
This book has to be the best hiring aid I ever had. I've been using it for over a year and just got two more copies of the new 2nd edition for my department managers. It will help you screen out the dopes and liars, and I tell you this from experience. I could not believe the con games I have uncovered using this book.

A tremendous tool for all who screen applicants
Dr. Ford has nailed down 99% of the scams and frauds that phonies use to try to get jobs they shouldn't have. This book is absolutely neccessary for anyone who has the job of trying to protect a hiring organization from phonies. It should be on the desk of all HR people as well as independent recruiters, counselors, and instructors. Well done!

just average
I am currently reading just about everything out there on hormone replacement therapy and although I happen to own this book-I do not plan to keep it. It skims the surface, discussing pros and cons ad nauseum, which may be ok for some people, but eventually you have to step up to the plate and make decisions. This book, along with the writing of Elizabeth Vliet may tell you yes you have a problem and even help reassure you that you are not going mad-but those are baby steps. For myself, I want a plan of attack. This is why I vastly prefer ob gyn Uzzi Reiss book on Natural Hormone Balance. Perhaps supplemented with Dr. John Lee and Jonathan Wright-at least the guys offer you specific suggestions as a starting point. I live in the midwest and one does not find doctors here who know much about nhrt-so that sort of concrete help is a great planning tool. I am not negative about this author-at least her work is organized so you can quickly get to the section you need-so it is good as far as it goes. Which is not far enough for someone working to reverse the damage a tubal ligation did 25 years ago. Please do not assume a woman author is naturally your best friend. Competence knows no gender.

Very Informative
Gillian Ford has done her homework! The index of this book is worth the price alone. You can find what you are looking for in this book. She has listed the many references to medical literature in the back of the book which helps to back-up the information that she gives. She writes as if she is a detail-oriented, intelligent person. Other books that have been written on the subject of hormones for women, including those written by many M.D.'s, do not cover the topic as well as she has in this book. I'd recommend getting this one and getting Elizabeth Vliet's newest "Screaming..." book. But don't expect Dr. Vliet's book to have a very good index. You will have a lot more trouble finding what you are looking for in Dr. Vliet's book.

Listening to Your Homones
What great information this book gives. I was introduced to this book at Gillian Ford's Clinic in Roseville CA.The women that run the clinic are wonderful and and when you need more information you can refer to the book for the added help. If your headed towards Menopause, like I am, you can get some non-bias information in this book!

Nice coverage on the legend behind Dracula and the movie
I think this book is a must for fans of horror films and artsy movies. This Dracula is an artistic venture into the horror genre, most notorious for its gore and guts aspects. I like the photographs and the conceptual designs being put into the movie.

One of My Favorites
Yes, it is slightly campy and overacted but it was a genuine reproduction of the book - only better. The mood, the story, the characters, the castle, I liked it all.

This Dracula is not the violent, blood-thirsty monster featured in so many of these types of movies. Instead, Gary Oldham (what a selection!) is the dark, sensuous eternal phantom, at once mesmerizing and intoxicating. The trick of using a diary is especially effective in this case in that it gives the story some structure. Even Keanu Reeves was good as the helpless husband.

A return to Travis McGee territory
I stumbled across this book while browsing in search of a good read to enjoy over lunch. This was my first journey into Ford country and I found it delightful and surprising. For me the plot line and characters carried me back to Travis McGee days. In many ways it was a retread of several of John McDonald's McGee mysteries. A mysterious death and suspicions of foul play. The P.I. slowly unraveling the tapestry of the suspect's personality and discovering a long, dark thread that leads backward into a web of deceit and darkness. If you've read McDonald you know the tale already, but this does not prevent the story being well received. The setting in the Northwest is well-placed and described. The supporting characters are enjoyable. The bad guys are appropriately bad and even if you realize where the plot is going there are a couple of surprises along the way that bring delight. A good read and I will now be hunting for other books of the series.

A Wonderful Suspense-Full Witty Private Eye Novel
This is as good or better than the old Travis McGee stories by John MacDonald. Great plot, wonderful characters, crackling dialogue...author Ford is a superior talent. When someone this good writes a novel, their work almost defies description because the result is like magic. You are transported, informed, entranced, amused, and entertained. Try Ford's series of Leo Waterman, Private Eye, novels. You'll be glad you did. Also... please ignore the luke warm endorsements on the back covers of his books. They don't do the author justice; he is BETTER than they say.

A rare delight
I really enjoyed this book. The plot reminded me of some John D. McDonald books where Travis McGee backtracks an evil killer. Plus Leo Waterman has a hilarious sidekick--a foul mouthed New York phototgrapher--that helps him Some of the scenes with the photographer are laugh out loud funny. One negative is Ford's characterization of the minister which showed some anti-Christian bigotry on the part of the author.

Where's the Originality
There is an old saying to the effect: If you steal from one, it is plagiarism. If you steal from many, it is research.

On that basis, this is a well-researched book.

Without actually counting pages, my impression is that roughly a third of the book consists of facsimile reproductions of 100-150 year old news releases, advertisements, and journal reports. Most of the illustrations and pictures are of similar age.

The author does go into loving detail with regards to the construction of his machines -- essentially a copy of a Wimshurst with a modern drive system (dual axle-mounted motors vs one motor/crank driving a straight and a crossed belt).

The chapter on theory is only 5 pages long, and 3.5 of those are facsimile reproductions. I'm also surprised the author managed to get any output from his version of Kelvin's water drop generator -- his illustration shows the drops formed inches above the induction rings. A working device needs the drops to break loose from the water source just at the point of induction. In order for the drop to retain the charge as it falls into the collector it has to have the "repelled" charge pass from one-side, which means a continuous circuit from nozzle through source to other nozzle.

If deciding between this book, and A. D. Moore's "Electrostatics" (which was finally reprinted in 1997, 30 years after the original release), I recommend one consider "Electrostatics"

Home Made Lightning
This book is eye opening in that it awakens you to the fact that many traditional explanations of electricity do not explain all of the properties of electricity. A wonderful reference work. The illustrations are old, perhaps because the research seemed to stop around the 1930's. His chapter 6 on "Theories of generator operation" is excellent. His statement that "It is fair to say that there are as many theories as there are inventors of original generator designs." inspirers you to learn about all of the other designs. The book is packed with extensive references and I have recently acquired many of them. Although his references concerning Nikola Tesla are not pronounced, at least he mentions him in chapter 21 "Some philosophical conclusions and insights". Final answer: If I lose the book, I'll buy another!

Packed with info, could use more on dangers, yes, dangers
The book has great info, but read a lot more then this before implementing. Dangers exist with Hi Pressure, DC voltages. Science can be fun but a fully charged 1 quart Lyden Jar, or a 2 liter plastic soda bottle Lyden Jar will knock you down. It can be lethal. Read, then read again, don't experiment alone and make sure everyone can do CPR(having number for EMTS is good too). When they tell you make your own lightening, remember the dangers of lightening. Other then that, there are process' that are downright dangerous just to make, (electrophorus). The finished product is safe enough(maybe), but the process of manufacture is tricky and dangerous.

Other then that 5 stars, great, you will develope respect for that "Humble" foot dragging on the rug static snap you give the dog on his nose. You will understand why they ground your car at toll booths, before you hand the person at the booth.

Finally this book IS NOT for children. High Schooler Seniors maybe. BUT WITH SUPERVISION, CLOSE SUPERVISION, a Lab setting is preferential, with fire extinguishers, First Aiders and people who can tell if you are about to reach X-Ray Potentials.

A Company of Paradoxes
No one denies Dick DeVos is a great seller of soap or would question his right to do so. The book presents us with a paradox, however. Dick would have us believe Amway salesmen aren't like other salesmen: they don't bear false witness, they are consistent in word and deed, treat others according to the golden rule, are humble, courageous, disciplined, and stand for freedom. You have to decide if he is deceiving you or not. If he is, then Amway's approach is deceptive and sales practices based on this deceptive doctrine are deceptive. If he is not, then he is violating the constitutional rights of the sales force. They have the right of freedom of speech, an implied right of privacy, freedom of religion or lack of it; in short, the right to make their own choices about how to live and feel and think without Amway telling them how they better do it. Moreover, even in Dick's own religion, he is paradoxical. The path of spirituality has never been through riches.

Should be required reading!
DeVos inspires us to take charge of our lives, to live it to the fullest. Outlines principals and values we all should be living by. If we all did, this world would be a better place to live and work.

Essential Reading. This one should be a school textbook!
There are many great books in our local libraries and on booksites around the world. No doubt this is one of them. This is a book not only worth buying, reading, re-reading and applying. It is a book worth sharing!

During turbulent times such as these in our schools: crime, drugs, alchol abuse, teenage pregnancies, and now even MURDERs are becoming commonplace. We must rediscover those values which have made our country great.

Adults and youth alike are scrambling to find themselves in counter cultures and in personal liberties. Ask the Chinese, where personal liberties get them. Personal freedoms are important but as Mr. DeVos shares with us, freedom for all is much more critical. If we are to be a country of individualists, than we will be subject to lie in the bed we have made for ourselves. More accurately, we will be subject to sleeping with those FEW individuals whom are driving their own agendas.

My hope is that we (together) strive to uphold the vision our forefathers provided: to make our bed of universal freedoms -- a comfortable bed indeed.

Falconry: Art and Practice
As a somewhat informed novice, I found this book very interesting and informative. It has good descriptions of the birds used in falconry as well as thorough beginning training techniques. However, the buyer should know this book was written for falconry in the UK. Topics such as governing laws, terrain terms and types of quarry are often "foreign" to ours in the U.S.

Great Falconry Book
This book was great!! It had so much information I had to read it 3 times to get it all. It has so much info like how to make your own equipment, how to train your bird, tells all the equipment you need to have, and so much more.

The book is very good except that most of the book is from a UK point of view. The book has some good adresses in the back for all of your falconry needs. If you are a novice a seasoned falconer,or just someone interested in Birds of Prey you should get this book.

Falconry Bible, for beginners
This book provides an indepth look at all aspects of falconry. The section on preparing to recieve a bird was very helpful and detailed. I have never read a book which has provided such a detailed description of all common birds used in the sport. I recommend that everyone who is beginning in this sport, or is considering taking it up should read this book. The only problem about this book is that it talks too much about the law in England, which is not relevant to us in North America.
