A Disappointing Read
This book could be half as long as it is if all the failed attempts at being funny were removed. The authors seem more concerned with trying to amuse their readers than with providing them with helpful information. While some good information exists within the book, it's buried among lame attempts at humor. I found myself being annoyed over and over again by these unfunny intrusions.

If you're looking for a lot of helpful, well-organized information on car care, I'd look elsewhere (e.g., "Lucille's Car Care", by Lucille Treganowan, which I highly recommend). And to the authors I'd say, "Either be stand up comics or authors of helpful car books, but don't try to be both!" (because you're failing miserably at it!)

Diagnostic advice mixed with humor
Click and Clack diagnosed my intermittant start-up problem in about 2 minutes, via this book.

As a result, I could talk to my mechanic more intelligently, and I knew what I was in for before I called the shop. I don't fix cars myself, but this book enabled me to be in charge of the process.

You get a great diagnostic tool, and some cheesy (but still funny) humor, all for under $15. Not a bad deal.

Laughed hard enough that I shouldn't have been driving!
Great stories of the guys vs gals and a wonderful throw in on a college students response to a candidate college! My only complaint would be that the tape was too short only about an hour of entertainment, but a great hour!!!And if you need a good mechanic in Boston this tape has the perfect guy for you - really!!

Ford Bronco 1966-1977
Published in Paperback by Motorbooks International (September, 1990)
Authors: R. M. Clarke and R. M. Clark
Amazon base price: $16.95

Worth a look
Anyone with even a casual interest in the early Ford Broncos will find this book worthwhile. It includes many of the early magazine reviews on the truck, as well as several later ones. The articles hit on each year, which provides a good overview of the Bronco as it changed to fit the times. Plenty of technical information can be found here, including options, engines, specifications, etc. It's not a restoration manual, but rather a historical look back at one of the great SUVs of the 20th century. Check it out!

Excellent info for Early Bronco lovers
As any Early Bronco lover knows, it can be difficult to find information on the vehicle. The 4x4 Performance Portfolio is a compilation of articles and advertisements from various automotive publications. Most were written during the production of the '66-'77 Bronco and are a window into the past. My only complaints are few. First, some of the articles are incomplete; they have been cut off literaly in mid-sentence, leaving you wondering what happened. The book's page numbers continue without interruption, so it must have been a publishing oversight. Secondly, the book is entirely in black and white, save for the cover art. Some color photos from the later articles would be a nice touch. Overall, this is an excellent reference for any Bronco afficianado.

It's all there
This book is basically a compilation of every worthwhile article written about the early Ford Broncos. It is a perfect book for enthusiasts or anyone who is considering buying one and wants to keep the facts straight about model years. Don't buy this book if you are looking for advice on fixing up your Bronco, as it won't be helpful.

Not a disservice to the cause...but close
Yes, many of the photographs are spectacular. But the beautifully reproduced pictures aside, HOTSPOTS is an excellent example of how not to produce a tome designed to further the cause of conservation and ecological awareness. The bigger the book of this type (and HOTSPOTS is a very big book indeed), the more important variation in layout becomes, so that the eye will not become bored. In HOTSPOTS, full-page photographs alternate relentlessly with double-page spreads of interminably dry text better suited to an article in Nature or Scientific American than a coffee-table book intended for the general public. Even the Bulletin of the OTS (Organization for Tropical Studies) is livelier. Herein, endless lists and quoted statistics are interrupted only by the occasional attempt to actually interest the general reader in what is being said. The most accessible prose in the book is the foreword by Harrison Ford, and the publishers don't even have enough sense to put his name on the cover, where it might help to sell a few copies. Do I detect thereby a whiff of scientific snobbery? Attempting to plow through the unbearably monotonous text that only succeeds in rendering fascinating and vitally important information dull as dishwater, one has the impression of a group of scientists dedicated not to furthering the cause of conservation so much as effusively stating their own priorities. Only a few of the included maps are rendered with an eye (pun intended) toward enlightening the reader. In many, color separations are insufficiently boldly conceived and rendered, with the result that their interpretation becomes muddled. The book contains no explicatory drawings, diagrams, or other art work. These would not only serve to make the points lost in the text understandable, but would make the book far more pleasing to look at. Some of the most interesting photographs are set in the margins of the plodding text...and reproduced there so minutely as to render them virtually unviewable. Except for a few pages at the end of each section, there is no middle ground...photos are either full or double-page spread, or absurdly (for a book this size) tiny. More photographs, of varying size, should have been used in place of the monumentally dull text. The entire project cries out for the hand of a good designer. People will buy HOTSPOTS for the photographs or not at all because the text is, for the general public, virtually unreadable. What a shame and a disappointment. As an example of what might have been, I recommend THE LAST RAINFORESTS (Oxford; ed. Collins), MANU (Francis Patthey; MacQuarrie) and one of the most informative and best laid out of this type of volume, JUNGLES (Crown; Ayensu). Next time, they should let Harrison Ford write the whole book.

An outstanding contribution to conservation studies.
Hotspots is rich presentation which provides an extensive survey of the most biologically diverse and endangered ecoregions on the planet, compiling the studies and perceptions of a range of scientists and conservationists to provide a strategy for coping with conservation challenges to each of these regions. 25 areas receive focus from the Andes to Africa and the Philippines. Extensive illustrations compliments in-depth, detailed articles. Very highly recommended: a special presentation.

Hotspots
This is a great book. My Aunt Avecita Chicchon helped in makeing this book, so I learned a bit more about it. This book has helped me understand a little bit more about the rain forests of the world, and appreciate the work my aunt and uncle are doing for South America.

big-block ford engines
How can a book about ford big blocks not include the 460.
If you own one of the engines listed on the cover you will
probably love this book, but it was a waste for me.

My Mistake
It is an excellent book on the FE and FT big block Fords. I should have taken the time to load the cover page so I could see the fact that it does not cover ALL Ford big blocks. The 385 series Ford big block is NOT covered in this book. I simply purchased this book based on the title and incorrectly assumed it would cover the 385 series.

THE BEST!!!
Being an FE Nut, I learned a lot of tricks you don't see everyday! Very Complete, a must have, couldn't belive 'Til I saw it!

Badly in need of editorial assistance.
This book is well plotted, but is so much in need of a competent editorial hand that it is difficult to read. I understand that this is a self published book, but nonethless the author should have had it edited beforehand, since the publisher doesn't seem to do any editing.

A First Book Well Worth The Money
I have a copy of "The Black Beast". It is a very gritty book set in Chicago. It combines police drama, societal problems and even the occult in the framework of the book.

The ending threw me for a loop. I had to reread the last chapters several times to follow all the twists and turns that Mr. Berlin put into the ending. It surprised me and I am an avid reader of mysteries.

I am sure that any mystery reader would enjoy the book. I know that I did.

WELL WRITTEN AND INTRIGUING
I found THE BLACK BEAST to be a very well written and intriguing murder mystery novel with a refreshing touch of etherial grace. This story captures the reader right from the start.

THE BLACK BEAST is quite a thriller, loaded with all the right details. Well edited, not at all difficult to read. I have recommended this novel to several of my friends!

Good explanations, but ....
This book explains the business plan in sufficient detail to let you understand what is needed to create a business plan. If you're not proficient already in writing business plans, you'll need a Ernst & Young consultant to have any use of the book. Of course, then you'll probably get the book for free ater having paid their fees. In short, nice to read but absolutely not the first bookon the subject to recommend to anyone.

Well delivered information neatly and compactly written
I think this book does of a great job of succintly outlining the dos and donts of business plan writing. I also think that the example plan is most instructional. The only thing it could do better is to put in a sample business plan that is based on a services model, rather than a products model. It also could touch on the Internet as a special information resource.

This book is my bible
This book says it all very concisely, no fluff. I've written three business plans with it. Read a chapter in the book, write a chapter of the plan. The examples are very good. I just hit $1MM in sales on my third try - I give this book a lot of credit for helping me get organized.

Very good book
This book is for beginners. It is very well written and keeps your attention. I recommend it as a first book. For the guy that only gave it 1 star, who in their right mind would think they can pick up a 350 page book on vbscripts and think that they will be able to administer their network? That aside, i suggest everyone that is interested buy it. It's probably the only updated book on vbscripts that you will find and well worth the 25 or so bucks.

Well, I liked it...
This is a good book. There are not many books in print that focus on VBScript and most of them seem to me to be written for hard core programmers. Learn VBScript in a Weekend goes a long way to filling the void of 'unwritten entry-level books' on VBScript.

It easy to understand and doesn't overwhelm you with technical mumbo-jumbo. Its probably not something a master programmer is looking for but for people new to VBScript and the WSH or for new programmers book I think that this book provides a great starting point.

It begins with a good introduction to VBScript. After that the author shows you how to use VBScript to help spice up your web pages. The last half of the book is dedicated to covering VBScript and the WSH. Here you'll learn how to do collect system information, work with the registry, write to event logs, create log files and reports, interact with users using popup dialogs and a lot more.

Covers all the basics from A - Z
There are not very many up-to-date books that cover VBScript and most of them are aimed at experienced programmers. This book is perfect for first time programmers, future web developers and would-be system administrators. It assumes very little prior experience and takes you from A to Z in 7 easy to read chapters.

Don't expect to read the entire book in a single weekend if you plan to follow along and recreate all the example scritps for yourself. Still, if you want to learn how to work with VBScript this book will give you a big head start. I recommend that you read this book first and then move on to one of the more technical VBScripts books.

Its not specific enough. Especially for my year and model.
It can get your hopes up for easy stuff, but the hard stuff is left out. It lacks the real stuff that shop mechanics' manuals have for each specific year and model changes. I know you; "get what you pay for!"

Easy to read and use
I would like to know why you state that the oil pan can be removed from the Crown Victoria without removing the motor. I have a 1992 and I followed the manual and the oil pan will not pass between the frame and motor. I even removed the cam covers but there is not enough clearance. Am I doing something wrong or is your manual wrong?

I have a question?
I have a 1997 Mercury Marqui Does Haynes have a manual for m

One of the poorest books on seeing and doing D.C.
Having family that has recently moved to D.C. we felt that we needed some "see & do" books, so we ordered this one and another("Access Washington") on the subject. This is the second Frommer's we have bought and our last. It is not tight. It does not cover the subject thoroughly. It is not arranged properly. Sure, there's a lot to cover in D.C., but there are other books that do it! "Access Washington, D.C." is much superior. Access groups the city by area; it color codes by historical, lodging and dining. Wherever you are in D.C. one can find where to stay, where to eat and what to see. Frommer simply hasn't discovered how to get people to the great places. Thieir books are often written as if they had not been there.

Walking tours, restaurants worth it
Like other Frommers books I have used, the walking tours offered here make the D.C. edition worth it. Tours and agendas are designed around how much time one has, which is always beneficial. I found three good (and affordable) places to eat thanks to the book. Why only four stars? The map. Yes, it's free, but it isn't as detailed as I would like, and the glossy surface makes it hard to highlight. Improve on that, guys, and the fifth star is yours!

Stellar guidebook.
"Frommer's Washington, D.C. '98" is a stellar guide to this vibrant and culturally-diverse cosmopolitan city. Elise Hartman Ford not only gives us astute and in-depth assessments of the shops, hotels, and museums, she provides extensive background on the city itself--everything from "History 101" and "Hollywood On The Potomac" to "Washington Calendar of Events" and "Getting to Know Washington, D.C." I especially loved Ford's "Best Bets" sections, where she gives insider-info on, say, the Best Inexpensive Hotel (The Days Inn Premier) or the Best Desserts (the "no frou-frou" sweets at Cafe Berlin). The book's maps are terrific, and Ford's "Getting There" and "Getting Around" are marvelous guides to the various airports, shuttles, and public forms of transportation. Don't miss this top-notch guidebook.

The Legendary Model A Ford : The Ultimate History of One of America's Great Automobiles

Why Slam Edsel Ford?
The author, self-styled Model A expert, includes unnecessary remarks criticizing Edsel Ford. Without Edsel Ford, its very unlikey the Model A would have existed in the first place.

Good Book Needs Editor
History interests me and I'm restoring my 1931 Model A station wagon, so when I discovered Winnewisser's book I was excited to get it. I rarely buy books, and normally wait for the County Library system to purchase those that I might like to read. Thinking that a book like this might not have a wide audience, so the Library might not acquire it, I decided to fork out the money for it, and I'm glad I did. This is a good book and I enjoyed it quite a bit, reading it in three or four sittings. I lent it to my father, who grew up when Model As were on the street and drove the wagon for thirty-five years or so before giving it to me, and he liked the book, too.

That said, this book could have been better. First, Winnewisser needs an editor. The language is fine and the book is quite understandable, but it contains obvious errors. The caption under the engine photograph on page 9 is typical: it misidentifies the cutout that sits on top of the generator as a generator. On page 220 another caption misidentifies an 1930 station wagon as a 1929 model. Ford made substantial changes in the the Model A body lines between 1929 and 1930, as a reader can see by looking at the 1929 station wagon shown on page 77. When I looked at that photograph, I thought the car must have been made for use in England, as it has right-hand steering. Closer examination - the women are shaking left hands and the man's pocket square is on the wrong side of his suit coat - indicates the photograph is reversed. In discussing sales to its dealers, Winnewisser writes on page 197 that Ford adopted a twenty-two percent discount effective February 6, 1931, and then adds parenthetically that this discount was in effect at the River Rouge plant "as early as November 10, 1931." Is he saying the Rouge instituted a dealer discount 9 months after Ford adopted it, or did he use the wrong year? Good editing could clear up this confusion and the errors I cite above, and would make the book even more enjoyable.

Winnewisser did a lot of research for this book and brings out new subject matter (for me, at least). For example, I was surprised to learn that Ford not only employed African-Americans on the assembly line (as opposed to relegating these men to more menial work), but that blacks supervised white workers in some cases. There are some things that are not in Winnewisser's book. I would have been interested to see visual side-by-side comparisons of the different models and differences between standard and deluxe models. I would have appreciated more information on the making of parts and the painting and assembly of automobiles, since the assembly line was Ford's great innovation, albeit twenty-five years prior the period depicted in this book. I would have liked to have seen a little more information on Ford's AA commercial trucks. Some of this information is available elsewhere, but I would have expected to see it in a book subtitled "the ultimate history of one of America's great automobiles."

These criticisms aside, I'm glad Winnewisser took the time to research and write this book, and to include a bibliography so that I can look for more details when I have a mind to do that. I'm recommending the book to the folks in my Model A Ford Club of America chapter, and to other friends who I think might enjoy a history of another America in another time. I recommend it to anyone who reads this review.

excellent!
This book does an excellent job of covering the history of the Model A! A great read because it goes beyond the historical and touches on the actual social feel of the car and the times. Filled with fun facts and antecdotes! I would recommed it to any history or antique car buff!
