Re-examining the LegendThis is an interesting book of essays on John Ford's Westerns. A number of topics are covered, such as Ford's use of music, the relationship between Ford and Frederick Remington's image of the West, the way Ford depicts different ethnic groups in his films.
By and large, the authors are sympathetic to John Ford (a good thing in my mind) and they clearly appreciate the movies. I gave the book 4 stars instead of 5 since there is some repetition among the different authors. (For example, everyone is compelled to discuss the last scene of "Fort Apache.") Still, it is a pleasure to read a jargon-free academic book on Ford's Westerns.

A very telling and honest account of the deep south. The photographer does an excellent job of using his subject to tell his thoughts. By keeping some photographs on a long exposure, he also shows the fleeting nature of these somewhat depressed settings. Also a strong use of color to illustrate the cultural setting and importance despite the deprived economic environment. Of high importance for anyone interested in the deep south and the heritage of the mississippi delta.

K is for Kwanzaa--Great BookFord managed to teach about the Kwanzaa in an interesting way to children, and was not stereotypical. This is a great book to teach cultural diversity in the classroom, because it does not belittle any race or culture. Read it, and you'll see!!

A solid start that doesn't oversimplify the sport.Actually, it's two sports -- depending on who you ask. Ford does a great job of acknowledging and exploring the similarities and common concerns of sea and whitewater kayaking. The simple and straightforward advice on instruction and gear selection makes this a great book to read before you ever get in a kayak. It provides you with the knowledge to ask good questions and make reasonable decisions when you go to purchase gear. The book splits later into sea and whitewater sections, so if you are already sold on one and don't want to know about the other, you might shy away from this title -- don't. Expert paddlers agree that all types of paddling have something to teach all types of paddlers. Taking a few minutes to become more familiar with the other side of kayaking will benefit you, and the getting started angle of this book is too good to miss. For the undecided, or for future whitewater paddlers, this is an easy to read overview of strokes, river reading, vocabulary, and other concerns with good photos to help explain major points. Simple advice on rolling, manuvering, playing, and safety will give you plenty of things to learn as you begin to explore the awesome fun of kayaking.,

HiostorianThis book tells one of the hebrew bible's stories that have no evidence. It takes people of myth, superstition to believe that.
There is no human being that can suvive that heat of the fire.
realistic thinking has no place for fiction.

Intamacy of ObservationI gravitate towards poems in which the space between the poet and the poem is small. I like to feel the heat of the poet's own breath as I read, hear their voice crescendo at lines that I feel the most. The great strength of Henri Cole's collection "The Look of Things" is his ability to observe things from far distances while simultaneously making the reader intimately feel his presence. It is this balancing act that his skills as a poet are at their sharpest. As quiet as many of these poems are, the poet stays embodied, as though every beautifully sculpted line were an extension of his very self. He can describe a beach he sees from far away, or a café he passes by, yet it is as though he describing these places and disparate events from their core and not from a place outside. The poet frequently melts away into his subjects, yet somehow keeps the boundary between the two clear. I do not quite understand how he does this, but I am trying. It was only on a second reading of many of the poems in this collection that I noticed many of Cole's formal choices. Sometimes, for example, when a poet uses end-rhymes, the form of the poem is always in danger of overshadowing its substance. But it is made clear in poems like "Torso", and "The Roman Baths at Nimes" and the title poem of the collection that Cole is adept at serving a poem with formalistic elements and not merely using them to dress it up. The beauty of these poems is of such an intense immediacy and I encourage those unfamiliar with this poet to experience him for themselves.

Good introductionGood solid introduction to the subject - but wont leave you as a "master". All of the fundamental concepts are set out - and as you would expect from an introductory text they are all explained well but there is a real lack of depth in terms of pricing, market operations and dealing with real world issues - eg how do you cope with derivatives on dividend paying stocks? How do you model vol smiles etc.
Good as a first reader - or for a person who wants to "blag the interview" - but you will need to buy another book sooner or later.
