Useful for a dilettante Perl programmer
Unlike the PHP pocket reference, this one indexes the contents, and takes more care in describing the function calls that it covers.

I know enough Perl to lift good, reusable code. So the front end of this book, which is concise and thoughfully written, refreshes my grasp of the details as I dig through. That's nice.

It would be a better book if it would lay flat on any page.

Review of Natural Ways to Lower Your Cholesterol
Very thorough explaination of types of cholesterol, use in the body, results of elevated cholesterol levels and ideal levels based on one's age. This book also gave good suggestions other than diet alone to reduce cholesterol levels including exercise and nutritional supplements. Some recipes were included. Overall, I found the ideas supported by scientific data(not way out there)and I plan on passing this information to my parents who suffer from elevated cholesterol.

Alabama : Atlas of Historical County Boundaries
If you're interested in this sort of thing as I am this book could be of great value however the price is unreal. I have a CD that does much the same for the entire country at a third the price of one state however this book is MUCH more accurate and shows county boundaries that only occured for as little as three days. The CD is also easier to use. That said I'll likely ask for the book as one of those Christmas presents I wouldn't buy for myself.

SAS from Female Point of View
Sarah Ford's two-fisted journey from a London council flat to the WRENS (Royal Navy) to her undercover action with the Special Air Service in Northern Ireland is an amazing odyssey, and her narrative keeps the pages turning. This is one tough broad, brought up on the mean streets of London, and her poignant struggle to escape the despair and poverty of the bottom rungs of British society and lead a productive life is truly inspiring.

What is really amazing about this coming-of-age story, however, is the unusual direction it sudenly takes, leading her away from the Royal Navy and into the shadowy world of the SAS, where she risks her life almost daily in the deadly rowhouses of Northern Ireland. This is an angle on "The Troubles" you don't see much of. Highly recommended.

Many voices
This is a fine book for teenagers, many of whom have serious and important questions about spirituality and religion. Libraries would do well to own it, as would browsers and thoughtful seekers. Here we find interviews with Americans from a range of faith traditions - everyone from a Catholic Bishop to a Quaker pacifist to a Wiccan writer to a Hindu doctor. Each one recounts their own personal experiences, and how they were drawn to the paths they chose to follow. It is this personal storytelling that makes the book most appealing - too often religion is seen merely as a set of stories or rules. Here we see it operating in the lives of individuals. There is a distinct emphasis on interfaith tolerance, acceptance of all (women, gays, etc.), and social activism that may prove inspiring to young people. Some interviews are more interesting or relevant than others to me, but of course it depends on your point of view. Each chapter ends with a helpful list of further readings and approved web sites.

An excellent, intricate work.
Having read Ford's "Web of Angels," I searched long and hard to find another of his books, suceeding finally in the back of a supremely dusty used-bookstrore in deepest downtown New York. It takes some serious reading to understand the plot--both what's going on 'right now,' and how it ties into what's happening/has happened. It reminded me of Gibson's writing a little, in that respect. It's eccentric, well-realised, and definately no kin of average SF. Find a copy, and enjoy, and reread, and enjoy, and... Well, you get the picture. Check out Gene Wolfe, while you're at it. Best fiction author of our time, I believe.

Fantastic First Work
Diane Burns' first published set of poems had, at that time, firmly established her as one of the up and coming young Native American female poets of her generation. Sadly, the follow-up to this powerful work never happened. So, we are left with just this collection of deeply moving poems.
