A good book that was poorly edited
I used Dr. Ford's text in a Research Design class. The book contains some nice nuggets of wisdom but you have to dig for them. The text is very "wordy" and often confusing. If this 600 page book would have been edited properly it would have made for an excellent 300 page publication. It seems as though the author tried to create a linear development on how to properly conduct scientific research, but somehow you get lost in the many definitions and the nth degree detail. The book does contain some good examples and some nice diagrams. Overall this book is useful as a reference tool but not as a primary text.

Slick My Life In and Around Baseball
I enjoyed reading this book. I found this book interesting, funny, and informative. Most books I read seem to be dull and boring but this one was different. If you are a fan of baseball then i think you will enjoy reading this book. This book gives the point of view from a profesional baseball player and his expeirence of what goes on that people don't get to see pro athletes do and how they act. I would recomend this book to all readers because I think they would enjoy it as I did.

Taking Sides: Clashing Views on Controversial Issues in Business Ethics and Society

You don't have to read it
This book covers 19 controversial issues. First the authors bring an issue, give some comments and give two articles that discuss the issue, but are contraversial to each other.

The reason why this book cannot get more than three stars is that the choise of articles wasn't really successful. Sometimes some of the articles seem not to make sence at all. Some of them don't answer any questions.

For instance, the one about Patenting Life; second article, which keeps ripping on Rifkin (the author of the previous article) instead of discussing some of the issues Rifkin mentioned in his article against Patenting Life. It's obvious that he's for patenting lives, but he doesn't come even close to some of the issues that Rifkin talks about in his article. He just tries to avoid them because he doesn't know how to answer to those claims. The author could pick a different articles in this and many other cases as well.

Also the second article of CEO Compensation Issue doesn't make any sence. Actually, the author of the article was Lisa H. Newton herself. She asserts that CEOs do nothing but writing memos and lay offs, at the same time receiving over 47,000 times (if I remember correctly) more than other people in developing nations like Africa and Asia do, and 209 times more than his employees.Common, this is not called Ethics in Business. She doesn't face the facts brought up by the author of the article who gave pretty reasonable arguements why CEOs should get that much compensations, why they are worth it.

Some of the articles do not provide with any references or sources of citations from outside sources when needed. I can mention one from Rifkin's article on patenting life.

The reason why this book got three stars is that, the issues brought by authors are pretty interesting and some are thought provoking. Even though one doesn't agree with the arguements, you can still learn something by reading them, and try not to repeat some of the blunders made by the authors.

I do recommend you to go for alternatives if you want a book on Business Ethics.

The best Kwanzaa book I've found so far...
This is a Kwanzaa book I may actually read to my students, but the ultimate Kwanzaa book is still out there somewhere. If I read this book I would emphasize the Kiswahili words and intertwine the idea of learning an African language and how African-Americans try to connect to their African roots. I wonder how my students from African countries will feel about this book? I'll have to see. They currently are intrigued by Martin Luther King Jr., civil rights and the idea of American slavery in the 19th century.

The World's Great Rifles
Published in Hardcover by Brown Packaging Books Ltd (01 September, 1998)
Author: Roger Ford
Amazon base price: $
Used price: $19.95
Average review score:

Good material overall, some glitches,
The author's technical explanations of the specific action (i.e., operating mechanism) of individual rifles is often quite detailed considering how many rifle descriptions are squeezed into this book; some descriptions are also going to be over the heads of many "casual enthusiasts." But--never fear--the technical aspects are generally offset with historical background and perspective. The graphics in this book are, for the most part, quite good. The writing is generally well done, with a pithy and sometimes colorful style befitting a historical, pseudo-technical publication. But don't expect hugely detailed historical descriptions, full of lore and military ramifications and what not, because there are a lot of rifles covered here in relatively few pages. For the most part, the author does a good job of it.

My major complaints are:
1) The graphical depiction(s) of a weapon is often many pages displaced from the written description, as if the layout artist never bothered to correlate the two.
2) I was disappointed by somewhat weak coverage of several major historical arms of the US. Specifically: the Browning Automatic Rifle coverage could have been more in-depth, and the lack of a featured picture of this highly regarded weapon was exasperating, given the graphical attention paid to many lesser arms. The coverage of the M1 Carbine was somewhat buried in a maze of lead-in and peripheral information, therefore the presentation here was subsequently rather undramatic. Also, there was no specific section covering the Tommygun. It belonged in this book and I couldn't figure out why it wasn't.

But, all in all, a fairly comprehensive and impressive handbook of rifles, both military and sporting, throughout history.

Surely there's a better history?
The PW review really summed it up -- this book is poorly edited, incoherent, meandering, and filled with shameful generalizations about the nature of men, women, and sex (and Jews, and...). If it weren't about the only book out there that even bothers to attempt to review the history of porn movie making (with most of its focus on the California era of the 70's through the 90's), it would deserve one star -- or less.

As it is, its facts are wrong, its gossip misleading, and its author clearly conflicted about his love and loathing of sexually explicit entertainment. But it is an interesting enough read (perhaps in the train wreck sense) that I finished the book. I didn't learn much more than I already knew, however. The shame of it is, this could have been a really good book, had some editor taken Ford firmly in hand and made him shape his chapters into a coherent form. It's not for nothing that the man has earned fame as a porn industry watcher; Ford has a trashy tabloid style that certainly grabs the attention (and there's nothing wrong with trashy tabloidism in its place!). But instead of guidance, he was handed a book contract and allowed to ramble without rein. The result is sad and unworthy of being clad between two covers. Blog-like ramblings on a website are one thing; I expect more rigorousness from a book I'm supposed to pay for.

RIVETING!!
I can't recall when I've read a more interesting book on the adult industry. Luke Ford has definitely done his homework. His writing style amazed me and held me spellbound through each and every page. Bravo, Mr. Ford!

An Important Work on an Important Topic from Jechu Prospect
Mr. Ford has crafted one of the most important tomes of his generation in this jeremiad against pornography. In clinical detail, Ford rips the scab off the underword of porn like no other thinker dare do today and reveals the dirt that lies at the heart of this moral stain upon all that is human and decent in the world of decent people who do not ignore natural law unlike those who act in or sell or like porn.

All in all, one of the most influencial books I have ever read. It got me very very very excited. I especially liked the photograph of Mr. Ford on the cover.

Ford F-Series Pickup Owner's Bible: A Hands-On Guide to Gett
The book have basic information only, was too general, I need a real repair manual to replece my clutch. Still looking for a decent book.

Ford F-Series Pickup Owner's Bible: A Hands-On Guide to Gett
Did not iknclude late model info and little or no info on Turbo Diesels and 97 Heavy Duty F250

Great book at what it is intended for
I respectfully disagree with the poor ratings offered by other reviewers. This book was never intended to be a complete service manual and it offers very important information that you will never find in a service manual. Mr Ludel created in this book something that I've found incredibly lacking in more typical service manuals: readability and enjoyable content. He gives an overview of the prolific and popular Ford F-series truck. His descriptions of the different available engines, transmissions and accessory packages is unique. His book is something that you can actually sit down and enjoy reading. It is not a terse, robotic instruction manual that guides you through maintenance and repair procedures. He describes the many faces of the Ford trucks as they spanned the years dating back to its infancy up through more current models.

Buy this book for the right reasons. If you are interested in buying a used Ford F-series or if you already own one then this will serve you well. Unless some kind of revised edition is in the works then the information might be dated in the context of buying a new truck. Do NOT buy this book expecting to get a service manual that will give you step-by-step instructions for repairing a component on your truck. It was not intended for this! If you want a service manual I suggest the Haynes line, and I would specifically suggest NOT getting the Chilton brand manuals. In my experience Haynes has for more clear instructions and illustrations than Chilton.

Beginners don't bother
This book is just plain awful. I bought this book hoping to use my knowledge of Java in the JBuilder IDE, but that isn't what I got. This book just plain sucks. Nothing on how to use JBuilder, no tutorials on JBuilder, nothing. This book mainly covers intermediate to advanced Java programming topics, so JBuilder beginners beware of this book! It is too bad that I don't need this book anymore even though I bought the book hoping to learn something.

Jack of all trades...
...but master of none. I have experienced great success with the "Unleashed" series and when I saw this book was available, I purchased it without a second thought. What I hoped for was a book that really taught me the hidden details of the JBuilder developer environment. Instead, what I got was a book that tries to cover the entire gamut of java development within the JBuilder scope. The first section titled "Design and Team Development Strategies" contains 4 chapters of information on topics such as O-O development and coding standards that have been treated far more effectively in other publications such as Eckel's invaluable "Thinking In Java". The remainder of the book can be better described as Java development, with a tilt towards the JBuilder method of doing it.

You get a taste of "what could be" in pages 22-38 of chapter 1. In that text the authors document several very useful JBuilder IDE tricks and tips the authors use when developing applications. That's what I need! Unfortunately, they go no further exploring this desperately necessary area. I don't want 17 pages of IDE coverage, I want several chapters.

Fortunately, this book has saved me a few hours of work already, so it was worth the money in that respect. Unfortunately it was of little help to me in the area I need help most; the IDE.

Learn Java First
If you buy this book expecting a hand holding tutorial on Java forget it. An Unleashed book assumes existing knowledge and moves to a next level. JBuilder 3 is dated but with the paucity of Jbuilder books it's still a reasonable buy. Contrary to earlier reviews that say it doesn't cover JBuilder; of course it does.

Unfortunately it takes 143 pages before it gets on the JBuilder track. After a 28 page introduction to the JBuilder environment, the book deviates into valuable but out of order material on Software Life Cycle Models, Requirements Gathering, Object Oriented Analysis and Design, Testing Methods, Version control and coding standards.

Part III is where you really get into the JBuilder/Java meat. The remaining chapters 9 to 41 cover a broad range of topics
including OOP in Jave, Advanced OOP, Layout Managers, Events, beans, Exceptions, debugging, I/O, Database programming, JNI, etc, etc. Some like JNI are quite brief though. However, where it applies the topics are JBuilder centric.

Finally, Java programming is as much a philosophy as a technology. It very much helps to learn the way of Java programming before moving to a visual development tool. I strongly recommend you read a basic Java book such as Teach Yourself Java in 21 Days and an in depth book such as Thinking in Java before tackling the book reviewed herein. Unfortunately the book is much in need of updating with JBuilder 6 just released.

Very Disappointed
Nothing in the description of this book stated it was for gasoline engines only. Since my truck has a diesel engine I was quite unhappy when the book arrived and it stated Gasoline Engines on the front cover.

Useless
If you want to know where the gas filler is....Buy this book.
If you want info on a Bronco, buy allmost anything else.

Get to know your vehicle better
Knowing little about auto mechanics I find this manual very informative. It's a great to use as a detailed extension of an owners manual. I use it thouroughly for basic maintenance and repair. As an amature mechanic it's a good resource for getting to know your truck better, with detailed descriptions on every part. I've tried to use this book as a trouble shooting guide with with little success. More often than not it led me down dead end paths and seemed to lack a lot of info in this department.

Poor Wiring diagrams
There is a difference between an electrical schematic and a wiring diagram. This manual provides neither. A schematic shows the electrical components and wire numbers (or colors) via national electrical code symbols. I realize that the manual does not claim to show a schematic. But it does claim to show wiring diagrams. The diagrams are not shown relative to electrical standards. Not by a long shot. They are simple block diagrams. Not only are they useless because they don't show sufficient detail, the lines and printing is so faint that you can't even read what is supposed to be showing.

Strange feelings
After performing maintenance and repair of my Ford Taurus 92 (3.8) I found that this book describes in details with photos the really simple things, but keeps a simple list of things to do without photos nor explanations for hard work, and sometimes I found myself in the situation when I don't know how to follow this list simply because There's no info where particular sensor is located and instructions was really stupid like
1. remove sensor
2. replace sensor
It has really good explanation about how to change oil or do regular maintenance, but it lucks troubleshooting guides or any insights about how to fix particular problems or explanation of simptoms if some device is not working.
Another thing is that electrical schemas are printed badly, sometimes I can't read characters and it lucks pin numbers so it's hard to locate wire on some switch without tracing it back to another switch ot device.
But, it's better then nothing and I can tell that this book really helped me to do some repairs, but did not aswer all my questions :(

Chilton's total car care
Of all the auto repair manuals that I have used,(and this is alot) Chilton's total car care is the best. I do all of the maintenance and repair of my vehicles, from oil change to engine rebuild and light bulbs to emission controls diagnosis and repair. This manual has all the information I have needed to keep my auto's in top running condition.
