California Bill delivers the sacred texts
Long before the small block chevy hunted the streets, the GMC was the way to go. California Bill tells all. Fun to read, cool to browse, I'm always picking mine up. Turn up the way back machine Sherman and gaze at ancient speed parts offered by long forgotten manufacturers. It's an exact copy of the original and you don't have top worry about the binding falling apart. Very Cool.

Apparent ERROR on page 3-71, Figure 175, ring gap lacation.
This is a very helpful, detailed source of information. However, there appears to be an error in the ring gap location as illustrated on page 3-71, in figure 175. Both diagrams are identical. This could be accurate, but if so, why is it necessary to have two diagrams? Number 85773125 appears in the figure, which might be helpful to you in locating the figure in question. Is the figure correct, or incorrect? Shouldn't one diagram be a mirror image of the other?

Chiltons Manual on GM Pickups
I often find myself thumbing through the pages in an auto manual wondering where the pertinent information is, and why it's not where it should be, regarding the vehicle I'm working on. Back & forth, searching for that one informative paragraph. More often than not, it's not even there, or if it is, it's not where it should be. I occasionally borrow a Chiltons Manual on GM Pickups from a friend, & find it hard to return it. I rarely use any other if I have his. So I've decided to purchase my own. Now I know I'll have the information I need to get the job done. In 1969, I was given a Chiltons Manual in high school as a gift after completing an Auto Mechanics course. I still have it & use it often when working on the older cars so I know I will always have the info I need, right where it should be. I wouldn't use anything else, because I've tried them & there's absolutely no comparison. Chilton's is the only way to go.

The old boys show us how it was done
While a few thumb worn copies of the original edition may show up at swap meets, it's cool to have a brand new copy that won't fall apart at the seams. It's not so much a history book but, rather a window that shows you how performance was accomplished long before anyone ever uttered the words "small block chevy". There are many techniques and parts vendors that have been lost with the ages. Some techniques are no longer practiced and it would be well advised to take caution with some of their advice. Let's face it in 1951, there were no shoulder harnesses or SRSes,and dashboards were steel, safety never really crossed their minds. Still, it's sure a fun book to have.

haynes is good
i've used haynes almost exclusively starting with my dodge dakota, then subaru, honda accord, and i'll buy and use another for my dodge ramcharger. better for the home mechanic with no training - these books actually follow the service manuals for the vehicle. chiltons might do for the semi-trained mechanic, but i find hard to follow. no book will be perfect - this helps a half way smart home mechanic the best.

Full tear down and rebuild/NOT
This book is helpful but does lack information on replacing parts that are common replacements on Suburbans. Also sometimes pictures do not have arrows specifying which part it is actually showing. Since this is the only book I have found that covers Suburbans, it is helpful but I hope someday someone will do a complete teardown and use better pictures and/or drawings.

Good for general repairs, but lacking for indepth
I recently purchased a copy of this book to use in reference for an '88 Astro that I was replacing a motor in. The book is based on the pre '88 models and provides no updated information. Many of the accessories were repositioned in '88 so if you get stuck the pictures provide no help. The manual also fails to describe some important steps. All in all, if you need this book either buy the Chiltons version or spend the extra money & purchase a factory shop manual.

Book was helpful and provided good instruction.
I used the book as a guide to overhaul my 1989 GMC Safari van and was very pleased that I had spent the money. I had questioned a few of the steps in the engine removal process and was glad I had followed the advice of the authors and did not skip any. The book is concise and accurate. I would ask for more photographs and illustrations in some fo the sections, but the graphics are sufficient and I was able to make it through the tasks. I would suggest to anyone to buy the book if they plan on doing any kind of maintenance on their vehicle and consider it the ultimate source.
