Street Rodder Hall of Fame Pick
Just want to let everybody know that Jerry Weesner of Streetrodder (June 2002) picked Cool Cars, High Art as a Hall of Fame selection with only three other books on the art of customizing.

Blue Collar Art on Parnassus
This handsome book is an unusual treatment of its subject for sure. There is a bevy of color photographs to satisfy the aficionado--and to make it an ideal gift for any car-crazy friend. But what I find most striking is the author¹s truly unique take on the car as an art object. Obviously comfortable with the demands of current theoretical discourse, he seems purposefully to prove that the obscurantism that bedevils so much academic prose today is merely self-indulgent. He has helped me grasp much more than just the beauty of the customized car. Readers (and especially teachers in a number of disciplines) will appreciate Prof. DeWitt¹s cunning explications of a Williams poem, a Picasso collage, a Futurist sculpture, and a surprising number of movies and TV shows to support his insights into our car culture.

Corporate Power, American Democracy, and the Automobile Industry

Provoking and witty!
If you've raised an eyebrow at the recent Bridgestone/Firestone/Ford scandal, get ready to raise two-you may need to borrow a few more-when you read this book. In Corporate Power, American Democracy, and the Automobile Industry, Stan Luger provides an intriguing historical context (think shady past) for the auto industry's latest disregard of public safety and consumer protection. If you think tire failures and SUV rollovers are bad, dig deeper-this is just icing. Luger gives you the cake-the misdeeds of corporate greed run thick through America's car industry. This book recounts forty years of the automobile industry's use (and misuse) of corporate power and reveals how this power has influenced public policy, politics, and our everyday car culture. From public safety to environmental protection, Luger illustrates how the automobile industry has flexed its muscles in the political arena to, guess what, maximize profit at our expense. Luger tracks the car industry's patterns of power and shows us that the market isn't just about supply and demand-it's about influence, decisions of the elite, and a disregard for the democratic process.

Luger shows how, time and again, the automobile industry has shirked responsibility for the negative impact of its products and held regulations at bay. For example, Luger explains how "blaming the drive" is a well-worn response of the auto industry. Recently, Bridgestone/Firestone tried to argue that its tires aren't faulty-SUV drives are at fault for improper tire inflation. Luger gives us the historical pattern for this position: from the late 1930s up until the early 1960s, the auto industry repeatedly argued that the cause of automobile accidents lay with the driver. It argued that increased driver education and responsibility would eliminate most accidents and pushed for programs and legislation that funded drivers' education and stiffened enforcement of traffic violations. Of course, Ralph Nader proved in the mid-1960s that the driver wasn't to blame, and that the car-unsafe at any speed-was. Which brings us to Luger's important point: social movements, such as Nader's consumer rights campaigns, are key to meeting capital's flagrant abuses head-on. Whether it's the labor movement or the environmental movement, organized response can challenge corporate power.

But don't just read this book for its hard-hitting analysis; it's also a witty narrative with juicy asides about the sleazier side of the automobile industry. You'll die laughing when you come across the story about the most expensive executive midnight snack in history (don't read it while driving!).

Thorough, Smart & Sassy
Corporate Power, American Democracy and the Automobile Industry is a must read for anyone who wants to go deeper than "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" into the automania that is America. Thoroughly researched, politically savvy, and sharply critical of corporate control of our democracy, this book fits oh so well with all election year reading material. Makes you want to dump that SUV and jump on the bus!

A book that acts like a video!
Can a book be better than a VHS video? In this case, YES!

This book has color photos and informative, educational text. It covers rescue pumpers, squad trucks, ambulances, boats, ships, helicopters, and planes.

The author went out of his way to find photos of unique rescue vehicles such as mini-hovercrafts to what may be the largest ambulance in the world. Also covered and shown is the most sophisticated rescue truck in the nation.

A great reference for the emergency vehicle fan, modeler, or collector.

A rescue lover's companion
This book is short but it rules! It's got a full color gallery of rescue trucks, ambulances, planes, helicopters, boats, wreckers, and more. Check it out if u find it.

Emergency Road Guide
I travel alot to visit my college students. I am usually traveling alone and realized that 911 is not always the correct number to call in an emergency. The correct numbers are posted but only randomly. This is a problem when you have an emergency and have not been keeping track of the correct phone number as you change states or areas. I found this book and got three. I immediately placed one in my car and one in each of my two childrens cars. It gives me peace of mind that they will have the proper emergency number if they ever need it.

WOW!
This is the greatest book and much needed for anyone traveling on the road. Most people are unaware that 911 is not an option everywhere in the US, and that dialing 911 from a cell phone is unreliable excpet in big cities - I learned this the hard way. This little book is great for a glove compartment or purse and it will provide you with emergency numbers for every state in the US! Plus, road hotlines, tourism contacts, seat belt laws, helmet regulations, alcohol BAC, radar detectors and more. And, each number is personally verified for accuracy. Very handy and a must have for RV people and campers! I love it - it will be with me everywhere I go! Well worth the price.

A beautiful and entertaining book
This book is fascinating, even for people like me who aren't especially interested in cars. I picked it up at my grandpa's house and couldn't put it down. More than a "car book," Ford Century brings in a lot of the history that Ford grew up in - from hula hoops to hot rods - and reminds its readers how Ford was there for it all. This is a beautiful book, as well, with great images and nostalgiac pictures. I highly recommend it.

Massive Panaoramic Sweep of Ford:Man,Cars,Company
Tying in with Ford's 100th celebration is this fine chronicle of this influential name and continuing legacy in so many areas of the past century.

The mobility and culture which has sprung up around the auto is staggering. Here it is captured from following one of the influential figures in all of that: Henry Ford and the legacy he left.

Well done with photos and enough text to provide running history of this giant in industry and society, this will become a collector's item to be given with pride, displayed on coffetables or in libraries.

To reflect back on all those vehicles--- Model T, Thunderbird, Mustang, Edsel, F-150, assembly line. We've all been touched by it. This is luscious nostalgia at its best.
