Excellent Ford Police Car Reading!
Of course, the thrill of having my restored C.H.P. Mustang on the front cover of the Ford Police Car book will bias me a bit...but not much. This is an excellent reference book on Ford Police Cars. Sanow has done a lot of research and can support his information with facts. This book has been a great resource for members of our Association, the Emergency Vehicle Owners & Operators Association, www.evooa.org. Great reading and filled with good photos!

Formula 1 '99 Technical Analysis

In depth look at F1
The best book for anyone who is interested in the technical side of modern F1. The coloured illustration that make up the book are top class, clearly showing the differences between the different cars no matter how minute. The section following the development if Ferrari and McLaren from race to race is superb. Those hoping for an explanation for the different designs and the concepts behind them should look for other books, though I doubt you'll find one thanks to F1's secrecy, but for those who would like to really view the cars in all their beauty there is nothing to match this book.

Even better than 98 if thats possible
Let me start off by saying that if you are an F1 fan especially a technical one(like myself) you can't pass up this book. If you do not know who Giorgio Piola is, he draws for the weekly magazine AutoSport. He is one of the best artist I have seen. His technical drawings allow you to understand the F1 cars in a technical perspective. Compared to the last edition "Technical Analysis 98", this one is even better. If you don't have the 98 book you should order that one too. I do like the 99 book since it is written in english only as opposed to the 98 which is in italian and english, but thats not a problem. What will really impress you is the attention to detail of the drawings, but they are so easy to understand. Again this is a must for any F1 fan. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

How Did We Get Into This Mess
Of all of the books that I have read pertaining to railroad history, "Getting There" is head and shoulders above all the rest. The author provides a well written and generally balanced account of the competition between rail and highway transportation in the United States from about the 1920's forward.

By 1920, the powerful presence of the robber barons of the late 19th century had disappeared, and the railroads were in a state of disarray and disintegration as a result of the heavy demands being placed upon the system, and the benign dictatorship of the United States Railroad Administration (USRA) who took over and ran the railroads during WWI.

In addition, the railroads were required to operate under onerous and restrictive rules and regulations imposed by the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) as a result of the excesses of the 19th century. And the railroads had little support from the public because of these past sins.

Into this scenario arose highway competition, by and large developed with public funds. And without controls such as imposed on the railroads. In contrast trucks and busses were allowed to operate unfettered. So a trucking company could operate freely between two given points and change rates and service at will. While a railroad operating between those same two points would have to go through the cumbersome ICC process.

Author Goddard provides a concise and well documented picture of this competition between rail and highway, a competition which continues to this day.

I highly recommed this book to anyone who is interested in a serious look at our overall transportation system. But a word of advice: Check the condition of your pacemaker first. This book is not recommended for someone with high blood pressure. I guarantee that you will come away absolutely furious at the foibles of our national transportation policy.

How highways, with massive gov't subsidies, beat railroads
A well-written readable, and mostly objective picture of how highways, through massive government investment through the construction of the interstate highway system, steadily became the dominant mode of transportation in the US. The author concludes that, with deregulation and improvements to Amtrak, railroads do have a promising future despite the historic imbalance.

A Useful Introduction to Heavy Equipment
Keith Haddock has written a serious and lavishly illustrated introduction to the world of heavy equipment, a world not used to being treated in such an adult fashion.

Haddock traces the history and development of each type of machine listed in his book, along with their manufacturuers, and the history of each brand name in the field. Accompanying the text are a series of clear, relevant photographs that illustrate different brands and periods in the development of each machine. Whereas many books drop an adult approach for the "Oh Boy, What a Big Machine That Is!" view of things, Haddock sticks with his conviction that he is writing for an intelligent audience interested in the history and development of heavy earthmoving machines. It is an approach I greatly appreciate.

One qualm with this book and others like it: There is too much emphasis placed on the largest of the machines; probably in the belief that this is the only way to sell such an intelligent book. However, if this is the only approach, why are there no color photos? While I can appreciate the size of a Caterpillar Model 24H grader, let's face the fact that the graders we normally deal with, and the graders that helped build America's road system, are the Cat Models 10 and 12 grader. Also what about the automatic paving machine and ther roller. We never hear of their stories; yet without them, roads would be much the worse for wear.

But until such a book comes out, Haddock's tome is well worth the time and money and is guaranteed intelligent reading with much to offer in the way of learning.

If you like earthmoving machines, buy this book.
This book teaches a lot of earthmoving machines, mainly the manufactories history, and you will see the most exotic kind of machines that ever worked. Although all its pictures are black and white, it worst. Buy it.

Exotics from Iowa and Wisconsin
Not many Americans are aware that "exotic" racing engine technologies, like dual overhead cams, intercoolers on superchargers, and multiple valves per cylinder -- were first fully developed in Iowa, New Jersey and California -- not in Europe. A few remarkable and mostly German-American engine builders, notably the Duesenberg brothers and Harry Miller (ne Mueller) developed the fastest automobiles in the world in America in the period before the Great Depression. These cars raced on the best tracks in the world, which were hand crafted out of 2 x 4 lumber.

Americans were racing at speeds well over 100 mph on these wooden tracks by 1920 -- well before the nation had adequate roads for motorists. (Borgeson explains that the reason road racing did not catch on in the US was altogether basic: no roads).

This is a very fine book, and it is wonderful to see it back in print. Another good book on this subject is "Gold, Guts and Glory," which is an unfortunate title but a fine collection of essays on the board track era by several different authors. Borgeson's classic is especially strong on Harry Miller. The author himself re-imported and restored one of Miller's famed front drive racers, a car purchased and "emulated" by Ettore Bugatti in the mid-1920s.

Work of a legend...A must read for the enthusiast.
At the time of his recent death in France, Grif was just completeing this second edition of this brillient work. It will be published this fall by SAE. Larry Crane, Automobile Magazine's art director say, "he was the purest iconoclast I will ever know." Automobile, Nov. 1997. His work is legendary. His research was paralleled by very few. A must read for the fan of the car enthusiast.

An outstanding, extensive, in-depth reference.
Grand Prix Cars 1945-65 is an outstanding, extensive reference and is one of the most in-depth works on the subject in print: it describes all Grand Prix cars of the period, from specs to racing achievements and background, and even includes projects never raced but contemplated. Each entry is accompanied by a small black and white photo and the author has interviewed many originators of the projects which provides additional information.

a must for the real F-1 fan
This book is a detailed summary of each Team that has fielded a car on the F-1 circuits of the world. An essential resource for anyone who loves F-1 and desires to understand the sport the people and their history. This volumn is well written with sufficent detail to start any search for information. I am waiting for the next volumn ie: Grand Prix Cars 1965 and beyond.

The Greaseless Guide to Car Care
This is a great book if you know next to nothing about cars but you own one. Very well explained and not a struggle to read for the beginner. Gave me a handle on terms and what they mean and how to find your way around the repair shop. Should be curriculum for life skills class for everyone.

car care for novices and the uninformed
I'm sorry to see this book out of print. I purchased copies for each of my children and myself. Jackson clearly explains the essentials you need to know in order to talk to your mechanic and understand what is important and what is not. A must for those of us who just want our cars to run with as little personal involvement as possible.

cars of style and grace
A celebration of the great American cars of the late 1940's through the early 1970's. In addition to all the iron turned out by Detroit there are a few cars that were improved upon by their owners. We are talking Kustoms, the forgotten art of the 50's. The livley anecdotal text is accompamnied by the best car photography today. Many of the cars featured are former participants of the 1950's and 1960's submarine races.

sundaes & saturday nights
Great book. The text is informative, witty and quick paced. The photography is outstanding. No reprints of old photos. The author/photographer is obviously a great photgrapher who happens to love American Cars. Unlike the majority of car books where someone has a camera, it is high noon and they take a picture This book has set a standard which leaves all the other car books in its dust.
