Air-Cooled Automotive Engines

An expert's review of aircooled engine designThis 1961 edition is the best book written to that date on air cooled engine design. Mackerle was principal engine designer for the Czechoslovakian Tatra auto and truck firm. The company specialized in air cooled engines and produced some of the world's best. This book combines theoretical knowledge and practical experience to provide advice still relevant to air cooled engine designers today. A later edition exists that I have not read. Be aware that Mackerle is an unabashed advocate of air cooling for engines. Designers of water cooled engines should look elsewhere. I recommend any interested reader seek out the latest available edition. Marvin McConoughe

Very informative and useful trucking informationI'm thrilled I bought this book! As a newly retired military member I'm interested in becoming a truck driver. This book taught me that I would actually make more money as a driver trainer-something I never thought about before. The author has written an incredibly comprehensive and informative book that really explains what life as a truck driver/ driver trainer is like. It has helped me gain insight into trucking that I never would've realized before reading this book. I highly recommend this to anyone considering a trucking career! It has been most helpful to me in my decision.

A good purchase for beginners through to enthusiastsThis is a great book that explains how to get the most from your All Wheel Drive (as opposed to 4wd)vehicle. It is not just for racing enthusiasts as it also includes information on how to best set up your car for road use in general. Although somewhat dated, it is well worth reading for anyone from a beginner through to an All Wheel Drive enthusiast or anyone interested in rally and motorsport in general. My advise would be to buy this book, then push the publishers to put it back into print with revisions.

All American WonderThis book is an essential resource for any and all who either are in the process of restoring an old jeep or those who just love old jeeps. The diagrams and photographs are priceless to those who are restoring WW2 jeeps and need an accurate reference to know that the right wire or cable is being put in the right spot. I literally cannot say enough good things about this book.

A Great Pictorial History of the Automobile! What an amazing collection of pictures detailing the history and evolution of the American automobile. The text in this book is basic support for this massing of pictures of factories that most probably have never heard of, like REO, Overland, Oakland, Marion, Queen, Chalmers, DeVaux-Hall, Ruxton and a great many others, all American companies. At the height of the auto industry boom, prior to the Great Depression, there were over 1,900 manufactures of American automobiles. Also, before the Great Depression, one out of every six people were employed by the auto industry. This book is for the person that knows a great deal about automobiles and would like to go back to the days of Henry Ford, Billy Durant, Walter Chrysler, John and Horace Dodge, Ransom Olds, Louis Chevrolet, Henry Leland, David Buick and all of the other greats that started a passion that would change America and the world forever.

Comprehensive information on American Car Paint codesThis book provides the reader with factory paint codes and descriptions for American cars built from 1945-95. It is particularly valuable for car restorers/collectors who are in the process of repainting their car and need to know the correct color. A restored car is always worth more if it is painted in the original factory color.

Phenominal Nostalgia for Baby BoomersYou remember seeing them in the 1950's as children. Your family had one -- the neighbors had one -- and you encountered them everywhere! The classic and sometimes bizarre cars of the chrome and fin-laden 1950's are re-born in this extremely well documented and photographed book. It's not just a book about cars - but captures the period and the business success [and failure] of American automakers at the time they dominated the consumer market. You won't be able to stop turning the pages -- shaking your head -- remembering those cars your young eyes once marveled at. Great price & great book.

This book gives the definitive history of the gas station.Do you know when and where the first oil well was found? Did you know that in the early 1900's any shopkeeper with a curb and an idea could have his own commercial gas pump? Do you know what a lubester is? If these answers interest you, as well as the history of the rise of the gas station as we know it, check out The American Gas Station. Michael Witzel takes readers on a hundred fifty year tour of the gas and oil business, from the first gush in Titusville, PA, to the breakup of Standard Oil Company to the advent of self-service stations. Lots of interesting information and great photos - a treat for any automotive enthusiast. - Leila Dunbar, writer, Mobilia.com
