Engines and Enterprises: The Life and Work of Sir Harry Ricardo
Published in Hardcover by Sutton Publishing (November, 1999)
Authors: John Reynolds and Diarmuid, Sir Down
Amazon base price: $36.00
Average review score:

Technology made personable
At first glance this might seem a technical treatise - and in fact those who study internal combustion engines will find sufficient detail to fascinate them. It is, however, a biography which covers the technical, business and personal life of a man whose contributions to transportation technology are far more widespread than his fame. The descendant of families accomplished in architecture and the arts, Ricardo was Cambridge educated at a time when most engineers in Britain learned from apprenticeship. His career spanned nearly seven decades, and his technological innovations found their way into motorcars, trucks, railroad engines and aircraft. John Reynolds pens a good read, and it will appeal to all with an interest in transportation history.

All you ever wanted to know about Cobras - lovingly told.
Opens with a breathtaking description of the authors' first near-Cobra experience. Has all the facts and figures. Lots of juicey pictures. Complete (compleat for the Anglos) race results ad nauseum. Some enjoyable accounts of the drivers and their steeds. An extensive study of the Daytona coupe's development. Finishes-up with a thorough explanation of current attempts to re-introduce the Cobra marque.

Essentials of Mercedes Benz SL average
Laurence Meredith's technical review of the 190SL and Pagoda Benz models is very good in what in presents, yet falls short in the detail I was expecting. This series is good for a Mercedes novice, but offers little detail about the insides of these models and what makes them unique and different. The book is awash with wonderful color pictures, and serves up correct statistics regarding the technical specifications. Perhaps I am just disappointed in that I was expecting more tips and details about restoring these cars. Information is both accurate and complete, and well presented.

Good books on Ghias are difficult to come by - This is definately the best I've seen or thumbed through. Details the Coupe's and Cabriolets seperately and covers all the major changes to details through the cars production, backed up with some excellent photographs. Also covers type 3 Ghias.

Readable and informative
I have owned several books of antique automobiles, including Packards. This book is about the company itself and what lead it to its precipitous decline after WWII.

It is very readable and informative. It is one thing to read tables of sales and changing positions in the marketplace among brands, which are available in automobile encyclopedias. This book, however, explains WHY things happened. For instance, I did not know that in 1953 Ford decided to be No.1 at any cost. Ford's deep pockets were used to buy market share. GM did the same. This created a serious problem for all the independent producers, none of which were as efficient as GM or Ford.

I liked the book a lot.
