Lovely book
Anthony Holden has put together a lovely tribute to the late Princess of Wales. It's a well designed book, with nice pictures (from Diana's formal portraits to her everyday life) and engaging text. If you like to collect Princess Diana memorabilia, this book would make a fine addition to your bookcase.

A poignant book that captures many facets of Diana's life
This book is one of the best I have seen that respectfully looks at Diana's life and her impact on others. Using Diana's own words, quotes from others who knew her, and expressive photographs, the author captures the many facets of Diana's life that made her so unique. Highly recommended.

Essential for Child Psychotherapists & School Psychologists
Nancy Klein clearly applies the best that trance and metaphor have to offer in assisting children and families confronted by cancer. Her unpretentious and direct self-instruction book serves as essential reading for any psychotherapist who wants to learn how to apply trance and metaphor as psychotherapy tools in life-threatening situations. Just as Milton E. Erickson's medical condition fueled his way of healing others, so also, Nancy Klein's medical history fuels her way of healing children and families. School Psychologists and Psychotherapists supporting children confronting serious medical conditions will value this book.

I'm Telling Everyone . . .
As a pediatric RN at a midwestern children's hospital, I interact daily with children and families dealing with serious on-going illnesses. So, of course I was keenly interested in checking out Nancy Klein's "Healing Images..." resources. I now own my own set (book, CD, workbook) and am excited to have this opportunity to share my fierce passion for these materials!
When the onset of serious illness feels like an all-out attack on a child and his or her loved ones, Nancy Klein's book and related materials provide the effective counterattack armament to be used in conjunction with the medical treatment battle plan.
Here's a book built from profound compassion and filled with solid substance. Nancy's words and metaphor-stories are dynamically encouraging and soothingly nurturing for the ill child as well as their often overwhelmed family members and friends.
Aside from the goal of enhancing healing, this guide aims to imbue the healing journey with calmness, courage, and confidence. Ms. Klein hits the mark. The wonderful illlustrations by Matt Holden aptly support the cause.
This is an awesome resource for children, families, health care providers, and anyone who cares about someone with a serious illness! I'm telling everyone I can about this great book and the adjunct activity book and CD. I've personally purchased sets for several families in my community. Most of you, too, know of at least one family in the midst of a medical crisis. You may have been wondering what you can do. Know that such a child and family would desperately welcome and appreciate the huge heartfelt help that these materials deliver.
P.S. I love the stories! My favorites right now are "Soccer Victory," "A Turtle," and "Remote Control." Which are yours?

Parkinson's and nutrition
"Parkinson's Disease: Assessing and Managing Unique Nutrition Needs" is written for the health professional. A newer and updated manual is: "Parkinson's Disease: Guidelines for Medical Nutrition Therapy." Books of interest for people with PD, families, caregivers, and PD support groups are "Eat well, stay well with Parkinson's Disease," and "Parkinson's Disease and Constipation" (audiocassette/booklet set). You may also visit the National Parkinson Foundation website and sign up for my forum "Ask the Parkinson Dietitian Kathrynne Holden, MS, RD

Invaluable - has improved quality of life
I can't recommend this book highly enough - well written, common sense, and has made a big difference in the quality of my mom's life. I refer to this book almost daily - seems to answer all nutrition related questions re: diet and health in the context of Parkinsons Disease. A godsend.

Delightful
If you want a good chuckle this is the book for you. One of the chapters is "Statistics is a Chancy Business" with a wonderful drawing of Wall Street, giving a historical timeline. One section gives us statistics to help us understand the real world. For example, "Did you hear about the statistician who drowned while wading in a pond with an average depth of six inches?", or "Statistics are like a bikini. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital".

A pleasure to read.
This book is one of those rare books that has a lot to offer, including amusing puns and deep philosophical ideas. And it is just a nice book to own. The type style and quality paper make it very attractive. Simanek's wit and Holden's illustrations complement each other nicely. The focus farm where the sons raise meat is a pun that is hard to top. The warning about Dihydrogen Monoxide(by Dan Galvin) and the Hazards of solar power(by Donald Simanek) have great pedagogical value for one and all. As Donald and John say, the book is "An Almanac of Scientific Ephemera."
WARNING: this book is not written for the scientist only. There are no academic degrees required to enjoy and appreciate this book. A careful reading of the book is probably as rewarding as any science course you will take. In fact, as with most good writing, a good course could be built around this publication. I dare you to put it down.

Seriously Under-Marketed and Under-Appreciated, A Real Value

It is always a shame when a really great book is badly marketed and consequently does not reach as many professionals and citizens as it should. This is such a book.

What the blurbs don't tell you, such as they are, is that the author was one of the true pioneers in the world of open source intelligence (creating useful actionable intelligence using only legal and ethical sources and methods). His brilliant efforts in the early 1990's were easily a decade ahead of where the Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS) is today--using a wide variety of Latin American newspapers and lots of brainpower, he was able to create tactical intelligence that contributed significantly to the success of operational missions by the U.S. Southern Command and the Drug Enforcement Administration, leading the destruction of cocaine laboratories, the interdiction of aircraft, and the arrest of key people in the transnational criminal structure.

This book is an essential reference for any agency or command library concerned with asymmetric warfare, unconventional threats, and non-traditional methods of providing intelligence support to those responsible for dealing with anything other than traditional war. The sources and methods that the author discusses are especially pertinent to the study of terrorism, proliferation, transnational crime, cross-national toxic dumping, and other sub-state and non-state threats.

Sharing the Secrets
Dr. Holden-Rhodes gives you the truth about the open border between the Unites States and Mexico. He is an operational expert on Intelligence and Drug Trafficking. He is a Professor at Highlands University and is known world wide on his Strategical Intelligence gathering abilities. Dr. Holden-Rhodes is a teacher of teachers.

Spreadsheet Modeling in Corporate Finance

Recommended by my Qualitative Methods teacher at NYU
Basic use of Excel for accounting methods. 5 stars only because I had to select something.

Excellent learning tool
Although intended as a supplement for textbooks used in college level business courses, this book is also valuable to working professionals who deal with financial modeling. Because I am a consultant and project manager I'm going to slant this review towards how my peers will benefit from the book. It's value outside of my narrow scope should be apparent.

First, unlike other books that teach spreadsheet modeling, the spreadsheets that come on the CD ROM are not finished products. Instead the author has chosen spreadsheets that use dynamic charts to illustrate concepts in an interactive manner (drag a control to change the parameters and the chart changes - this is a powerful teaching tool in or out of the classroom).

Second, the book needs to be read in sequence because spreadsheets you build in one chapter are the basis for refinements and added complexity in later chapters. This leads to highly complex spreadsheets, such as the model in chapter 16 (Life-Cycle Financial Planning), which incorporates tax parameters (federal and state levels), benefits analysis and other factors.

In all there are 53 spreadsheets presented in this book, and you build them. The author calls this "active learning" (as opposed to passive learning where you are provided templates), and it is effective because you are the one who builds the models and tools while following the book. Note that this book does NOT purport to teach Excel programming, but how to build models using Excel's basic features and functions.

As a consultant and project manager the parts of this book that were immediately useful to me were: Parts I (Time Value of Money), III (Capital Budgeting) and IV (Financial Planning). In particular, project management requires a thorough understanding of time value of money and capital budgeting, and the chapters in these sections should be read by anyone who is assigned as a project manager. Financial planning, especially from the perspective of IT asset management, is another knowledge area in which IT consultants should be well versed.

The other parts of the book (II Valuation and V Options and Corporate Finance) will be more useful to finance professionals and general business managers. There is a collection of supporting material on the author's web site that augment this book, including spreadsheets that can be downloaded. Another plus for the working professional is the book is fast-paced and, dare I say, engrossing.

NOT JUST FOR MANAGERS, IT'S A HANDBOOK FOR ALL
They call it "Successful Manager's Handbook". That is correct. But one thing you should know about this beautifully structured text is that it benefits anyone who seeks knowledge from it. Thus, I would not advise you to wait until you become a 'successful manager' before paying attention to it.
Even if you are the most unsuccessful messenger around, the valuable productivity guidelines in this book would go a long way in defining and improving your status. If diligently applied, the principles of this book would enhance your overall potentials: be it official or domestic.
This book is a handbook for all. It is an asset for matured dealings.

I haven't read this book yet
I just picked up a copy in an airport bookstore. I looked at one suggestion, and used it when I got back to the office. My productivity has skyrocketed. I think a lot of the suggestions here are commonsense. But do any of us have enough commonsense?

A MUST for all Americans, especially THIS year
Reading Fred Holden's Total Power of ONE in America gave me more valuable information about our country, than all the classes I've had in civics and government.
Flipping to the Bill of Rights (page 43) re-reminded me of what our founding fathers 'gave' us.
I'm now ready to be MORE involved in my community and my country. Thanks Fred for the 'thumb in my back.'

Powerful civics lesson for voting Americans of all ages.
Mr Holden has found a remarkable means to convey the original intent of the founders of our country. He describes the causes for problemns within our society and how to fix them. Written in a challenging form, the book is a primer on civics in the United States today. it takes into account realities, perceptions and analasis of the representitive democracy that is the United States of America The basic tennant of this book is that individuals have been led to believe by the media and government leaders that they are irrelevant and inconsequential. By following the guidelines outlined in this book, one can begin to affecvt change in their community. This first step leads to awareness in the process of govenrment and through participation, readers learn that their involvement in the system is not only possible but effective. This book is a "must read" for high school and college students who are interested in persuing careers in government or politics. For older Americians, this book is a valuable asset in assessing government, it's relevance, control and how individuals can still affect change.

Wake up America
I just finished reading this book this morning, and wow! For years, I've been wandering around believing, "What can I do?" Now I know that we each have unbelievable power. That we really can make a difference, and awareness is the first step. I am now more aware of how the American government works. Whether you're a Republican, Democrate, Libertarian, or any other "party" member, this book is worth reading--if only to stimulate your mind for the possibilities of a stronger nation. There really is power in one, and I am now doing my part. Thank you Fred Holden for opening my eyes and waking up one more American!

A highly recommended compendium of sound advice
In Total Power Of One In America, Fred Holden takes up where traditional education leaves off as he covers such vital contemporary issues as how best to make a living, how to live, and how to understand life. This "reader friendly", highly recommended compendium of sound advice, revealing insights, practical strategies, and motivating encouragement is unique among self-help, self-improvement guides as Holden shows how any one of us can make a genuine and discernable difference in our families, our communities, our work and our lives.
